Brookland news

Hello good sir, thought this page on the City's web site might be of interest. Though, I believe it's in error, as I explained before...seems that Taggart Creek flowed from Mt. Tabor to Reed College and Crystal Springs Creek, and that anything west of the ridge along 39th Avenue would have been a separate watershed. (Though, I think your research found that those, too, fed Johnson Creek, as opposed to flowing directly into the Willamette.)

Request for help with Stephen Crane

Hi, Finetooth, I don't believe we've met, but I'm familiar with your wonderful work in helping articles attain both GA and FA status. I have been working diligently on the Stephen Crane article since December and it has just recently been promoted to GA. It's currently listed at peer review, but because it's so long, no one has reviewed it as of yet. I'm also afraid it may be in sore need of a copy-edit or two. If you have the time (and I completely understand if you don't as your services are probably always in demand!), would you be willing to throw a few comments my way? Thanks so much for your extensive help with Crane! You're definitely correct about me needing a literary expert copy-editor; I asked Awadewit for help whenever she has time, so I'm sure her input will be invaluable. I've already addressed your concerns at the peer review, but I do have several questions, if you don't mind. First, I'm in a disagreement with another editor about the length of the lead. Do you think it's too long or contains unnecessary detail? I'm of the opinion that it doesn't (of course, I wrote it, so I'm biased), but I would appreciate your feedback on the issue. The pertinent discussion is on the talk page if you need more context.

Also, regarding the "Cora" vs. "Taylor" issue, I'm really quite torn. All of the Crane biographies refer to her as "Cora", and I've never seen her referred to as "Taylor"; although of course that was the name she was using when she met Crane, her legal name was Stewart. When she and Crane became an item, she used his name until her death in 1910. Her one biography is even titled "Cora Crane" and that's what it says on her tombstone in Jacksonville. Ack! All very good points, and I appreciate your insight. When she met Crane, her legal name was Cora Ethel Stewart, but she took the last name Taylor while dating a man by the same name. It's difficult to say whether she used the name "Crane" simply out of pretense, but for as long as she was with him, she used his name and they acted as husband and wife; in fact, most of Crane's friends truly thought they were married. She was still married to Stewart until he died in the early 1900s, after which she married a man called McNeil. They then divorced and because she was not allowed to use his name anymore due to a settlement, she went back to using "Cora Crane", which she retained until her death. I think explaining this mess in a footnote is a great idea, and perhaps "Taylor" would be the best bet for now. Thanks! María (habla conmigo) 22:50, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

1 Year of the Collaboration of the Week

Thanks for your kind words - it is a very special place (and I even worked in a Clinton County mention with the modern elk herd ;-) ). We were a bit spoiled with a wealth of sources for Leonard Harrison. We also plan to bring Colton Point to FA - some of the LHSP material will be recycled. Choess pointed out in FAC that the Modern era section was a bit awkward. I was going to fix it in FAC but was pleasantly surprised last night. Now my reorganization is done - I moved the Nessmuk PHMC marker into the Lumber section, all the other changes are in the Modern era. Let me know what you think please. The only issue I have is "king" verses "King". This issue came up in the PR and the reviewer wanted lower case "k". I have normally used upper case "K" (like you have) in the past and that has been fine in previous FA's. Request for help - satellite image

It's a while since I last asked you to help me on an image, so I hope you won't mind me approaching you now, for a small favour. This is a satellite image of South Georgia. I need two points marked, A and B. On the left-hand side, near the northern end of the island, is a deep bay which comes to a point. The letter B needs to be placed at this point. The letter A should be placed close by, at the entrance to this same bay, on the southerly side of the entrance. Both letters should be marked in red, for the sake of clarity. I really appreciate the help you have given in the past, and will fully understand if you tell me that this isn't possible, or that you can't help at this time, but I thought it worth asking. (later thought) - I wonder whether this map will be useful in helping to place my letters. The bay in question is that under the words Prince Olav Harbour; the letter B should be placed at the landward end of the bay, the letter A at the southern seaward end. And - it's just occurred to me - since the location Stromness is marked on the map, on the northerly coast, could we have a letter C at that point? Cheers and thanks again. Renovo or South Renovo

I recently uploaded a picture from flickr that was labeled as being Renovo, but I am pretty sure that it is South Renovo instead. A quick look at google earth seems to confirm this. North Fork John Day River

Hey, just saw this new page-- nice work! You've given me a bunch of new ideas about template use. I've never taken the time to figure out how to use the cite web template, and your uses here gives some fine examples. I also like the adj=on field for the convert template-- didn't know that one. I've been wording things awkwardly just to get around the default plural. I've never quite gotten the hang of the geobox 2 fields, and this example helps. It's the first time I've seen the etymology field used. It looks nice. Your elevation notes references Google Earth are much better worded than my recent use of just "Google Earth". Your water data report cite web template is something I'll probably copy and use myself. Finally, the locator map is spiffy-- that is done automagically with the geobox? I'm guessing it takes the coordinates and places the dot according? If so, that's sweet. If there's more to it, could you tell me what? And, what would the locator map be for other states? Would Washington be "Washington Locator Map.PNG", for example? Any chance that works for Canadian provinces too?

The stub template seems unnecessary! But if you say so :-) ...I always like to add sections, even to very stubby text, so I hope you don't mind if I do for this page. Might have to break a paragraph to do it well though. Anyway, nicely done! Pfly (talk) 03:47, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Heya-- I was about to add sections "Course", maybe "Natural History" or "Fish" or something for the bit about fish, and "Recreation" or something for the last part. But looking again I saw the course info was part of the lead and the second paragraph was more about national forests and such, so since I had little time I didn't do anything.

I've learned a lot from Ruhrfisch and Kmusser too, but I don't always seem to remember what I've learned, or don't have the patience of Ruhrfisch and you, patience needed to make excellent quality pages, technical details and all. I too imitated Larrys Creek early on, and also some pages of User:Malepheasant, who has made some nice river articles. I think I first learned about geoboxes from him.

Thanks for the locator map info. When I had more time I used to make watershed maps, but these days a simple, easy to create locator map would make me happy. It seems to me that something similar for Canadian provinces should be possible. Perhaps I'll look into the technical details sometime. All the BC locator maps, mainly for cities and the like, have struck me as fairly ugly. I've been making stubby pages for BC rivers (which are sorely lacking compared to WA and OR-- and there are so many large rivers up there!). There shouldn't be a copyright issue for base maps made from public domain data, like, say, the Digital Chart of the World.

Mapmaking, yes, can take a lot of work. How do you go about it? Me, I have an older copy of ArcGIS and use it either to make semi-ugly maps directly, or to make map "templates" to trace and make pretty in Adobe Illustrator. I haven't done it in a while, in part because ArcGIS is on an older computer I don't like using. Plus the older version I have is annoying limited in its ability to make nice looking maps. Kmusser's maps are far superior to anything I can pull off with ArcGIS (I think he uses it too, but a more recent version).

That TopoQuest trick is nifty and useful, thanks. I found something similar, if you aren't already aware-- from a GNIS page like U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Fanno Creek you can click "GNIS in Google Map" on the right and it opens a Google Map window centered on the river. Among the tabs at the top are the usual Map, Satellite, Terrain, etc, and also Topo, which takes you to USGS topo maps in a nice Google Maps interface. It's rather slow though. Anyway, cheers! ArcGIS is very expensive, absurdly so. I only happen to have it due to getting it for relatively cheap as a student some time ago (thus my being stuck with an older version). It can display whatever data you put into it and whatever scale and so on. It's very powerful, but worth the price? Not for mere mortals. It's on the order of thousands of dollars for just the core package. But there are some free small versions that might be useful if you wanted to look into GIS stuff. ArcExplorer is one I believe. If you haven't used GIS before there can be a bit of a learning curve, and you need to find data, such as the Digital Chart of the World, and then figure out how to import it into the GIS and do things with it. I read Ruhrfisch's map making description after posting last night, so I think I got the picture. Oop, I'd say a little more but the baby just woke up! Pfly (talk) 17:54, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

I'll chime in, ArcGIS isn't worth the money, but there is other GIS software out there, including some that's shareware or free. As Pfly said there is a kind of steep learning curve, once you learn it though you can make much nicer maps because it opens up the ability to use geographic data directly rather than relying on other peoples basemaps. I think I'm the only regular WP:ORE person who regularly edits it, which has mainly consisted of gutting large portions of it, adding some citations, and adding pictures since I live near the Wilsonville station/depot. An IP editor added most of what was there months ago, but it read like an essay/feasibility study. If you finish gutting/citing it, maybe we will actually get it "completed" before TriMet gets the line finished (I still have one station left to write though). Also, if you are up for it, I have about 5 or so WP:ORE articles that I think are ready for FA (all are GA already) content-wise. But, I need a fresh set of eyes to watch out for the MOS issues and to make sure everything looks right before nominating them (I'm thinking Mark Hatfield then the Oregon Supreme Court, Katherine Ann Power, Hillsboro, Oregon, Charles L. McNary, Matthew Deady, Provisional Government of Oregon, and Portland City Hall). I have a few things to add to all but Hatfield, but should finish that up this month. You did a great job helping with the Oregon State Capitol last year, so I'm hoping as a project we can push through these five eight or so (plus what is going with the Columbia) by the end of the year to wrap up another good year. • Does the father of the bridegroom give away the bride? Or is it the father or guardian of the bride?
  • It's only the father who gives the bride. In case her father is dead, the guardian can.
• Why is Joachim Alva in the infobox? His importance does not seem to be stressed in the text.
  • Joachim Alva is a popular Mangalorean Catholic. Many ethnic group articles have images of notable personalities in the Infobox.
• The table of names lists seven for men and only one for women. Since the population is probably split about 1 to 1, the 7 to 1 ratio in the table looks like POV. I might suggest four of each.
  • Its 4:4 now.

Vithoba

Hi. Can you please copyedit GA Vithoba, as you you did FA Ganesha? I approached you personally as you helped achieve Ganesha FA status by copy editing it twice, with Galena. I wanted to nominate the article for FAC process, but the "copyedit" problem always pops up. As noted in my explanation at Wikipedia:WikiProject League of Copyeditors/Requests/Vithoba: "A comment in Wikipedia:Peer review/Vithoba/archive1 says "I think this is overall pretty well done and fairly close to FAC. Before going to FAC the article needs a copyedit - on of the FA requirements is professional prose and there are several places that need polished, mostly missing articles but also some awkward constructions." Also, Wikipedia:Peer_review/Automated/July_2008#Vithoba suggests that there may be weasel words." Also at Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Peer review/Vithoba, an edirtor has said "Legend needs a copyedit". Columbia Stream Gauge

I found one in Canada! Birchbank International Gaging Station: [1]. It's got a neat graphic too, showing the layout. I'm not sure if it's a USGS station or not, so I'm not sure how to integrate it into what you've written. I might try later today, if you don't do it first.

…for the next river push, what do you think about Sandy River (Oregon)? Seems like a woefully inadequate article. It seems pretty important in the history of the region…being the destination of William Robert Broughton's early exploration of the Columbia, intersecting with the Barlow Road, having the Bull Run River as a tributary (main water source for Portland), and the accompanying Bull Run Hydroelectric Project, etc. Whaddya think? Ok, thanks...also, is it super important to list about barge traffic, and river activities for commerce? I don't know much about it, and not sure how easily I would be able to find info on it. Surprisingly we don't have any shipyards, and there is no river tourism, per say, which stinks...well, i guess there is a dinner cruise, and a boat that takes people to four locations 2 on each side of the river for bike riding, or just a river ride....ok, i'll add those, lol. there isn't, however, any place to rent a boat, or jet skis or anything fun like that though :( Ctjf83Talk 18:49, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

I've listed this article for peer review because, at present the City of Oakland's Planning Commission and City Council is revising zoning and height regulations for new land development (i.e. skyscrapers) in the neighborhood. Er...Louvre redux

Hi Finetooth, I hope that your travels are progressing well (saw above note). I was wondering if you would take a look at Louvre (again) whenever you get the chance. Featured article drive

Hey, Finetooth. I've been testing the waters of Wikipedian article-writing in terms of cities, and I think I'm ready to take on something huge. This something would happen to be a drive to push eighteen of America's largest cities to featured article status. However, the most efficient way for me to organize the goals of each article would be simply to have others point out its flaws. That, of course, means peer review. Are you up for the job?

If so, I have already started up a peer review for the largest of the eighteen cities, Los Angeles, California. It can be found at this location here.

• With respect, Wikipedia's image usage policy requires all images to have three pieces of information: (1) a copyright tag; (2) a verifiable source; and (3) an image summary. The existing license information includes (1) and (3) but not (2). A verifiable source can be in the form of a weblink, a citation for the published work from which the image was scanned, or the name and method of contact for the author. I could see no way to contact the author. I like the image a lot. If it's a scan, you should say so and provide the source. An inelegant solution

I ran into a similar accessdate problem with a few of the Colton Point refs, then came up with a kludge that works (if a bit clunkily), see here diff. Would this work for Columbia River?

Cite template access dates

I noticed your exchange with Ruhrfisch above, and just added a cite to the Columbia River article with an accessdate that seems to have made a broken link. I used the example format given in the template's documentation, but clearly it didn't work right. I've never quite grasped the access date format stuff. Can you point me to some info on how to properly use access dates in citation templates? I never seem to get it right, even when following examples given on template doc pages.
