Finetooth, Id like to give you a belated thank you for your copyedit of the Tel Aviv page. Unfortunately it still failed FAC (three times!) and is now having a break in preparation for another FAC. Most reviewers feel it needs another comprehensive copyedit and I thought it would be logical to ask you seeing as you already know the article. Thanks. Thanks for your kind words. I noticed Johnson Creek is up for both a PR and GAN. I have looked at it briefly and think it looks good (and the structure seems oddly familiar ;-) ). Anyway here is my plan, I will do a peer review in a few days and can also use that do a GA review. Does that sound OK? Since we have worked together are you Ok with that? Referencing a map

A couple of months ago you gave me a great deal of help with a map relating to Discovery Expedition, for which I was most grateful. May I ask for your help again? This time the target is the satellite photagraph here.

Basically what I need is three locations, to be identified on the image as A, B and C. Before I go into details of where, etc, can you tell me, first if this is possible, second if you've got tine to do it? (the article in question is Aeneas Mackintosh). Thanks for your prompt reply. The points I want can be A, B and C.
Point A: Follow the coastline up from the bottom-right corner to a small protuberance about one-fifth of the way up. This is Hut Point, and should be indicated by an A.
On the opposite side of the image, to the north of the leftmost of the islands is visible a small area of coastline. This is Cape Evans and should be indicated by a B.
Imagine, but don't draw, a straight line between A and B. About a fifth of the way along from A to B, mark point C. (This should work out about half-way between Hut Point and the glacier tongue)
That's it! If you think that a, b and c would look better I'll back your judgement. No text need appear: I'll do that on the map caption.

The image is great. On reflection, a dotted line joining A to C would improve, because that would represent the actual walk that Mackintosh and Hayward made, before their disappearance in a blizzard.   • Thanks for your kind offer - several weeks ago I proposed that every peer review request should get a repsonse. The Rambling Man has been very helpful with PR, as have some others. Lately I have been bogged down in FAC and busier in real life, so if you want to help out, picking a PR request with no responses and giving a review once a week or so would be a great help. In some ways the easiest ones are the ones that need the most work - just say expand the lead, add refs, avoid jargon and provide context, get a copyedit, and you're done ;-) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:19, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
    • Another possibility is that I sometimes come across failed FAC articles that seem to have all the information needed, just some copyedit help.         • Not sure how crazy you are / how much patience you have, but I saw your map at Kmusser's talk page and can tell you how I made the Larrys Creek and White Deer Hole Creek watershed maps. I started with the Census stream map with county and subdivision boundaries turned on. With Paint.net you can rotate image and superimpose them too, so I rotated the maps whose information I wanted to use (I had three maps of the watershed for Larrys and two for WDHC) until they were the same alignment as the free Census map. Then I shrank or blew up the source maps until they fit the free Census map. Then I pasted the Census map in a new layer on top of the source map and traced the watershed borders by hand. Since I had two or three source maps, the result is an average of all sources. You can adjust the opacity of the layer which helped. When I was done I made the layer opaque and used it for the map. I can go into more detail if needed - it is still a lot of work, but you seem skilled at making maps and may want to try it. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:37, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Juxtaposition COTW

Howdy Ho WikiProject Oregon! Time for another installment of Collaboration of the Week. The last few weeks we’ve knocked out quite a few articles of our current state legislators, and even a few former ones too. Great job to all those who helped make it happen. On a related note, we have had several DYKs from this and now have 53 DYKs so far this year (not counting multiples), less than four full months into the year. Last year we had a total of 83 DYKs for the entire year, and 7 combined for 2006 & 2005. So we are well on our way to another record year. Each time an article makes it to the main page as a DYK it will typically get an extra 1000 hits, which is usually far more than the typical 100 hits per month most minor articles receive. Peer review

Thanks for the review. I usually read an article, stew on it a bit, then write the PR. Sometimes when I know User:The Rambling Man is also working I will add a brief "I will review this article shortly" notice to the PR page first (usually after reading the lead and making sure I feel I can review it). I can start doing this if it would help. Another idea would be to do a review for the next day (one that will be added the next day, but is not yet on the backlog list) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:32, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

First watershed map

I like it and know it was a lot of work. I follow Kmusser's maps as models and they do not have a black border around the edge of the watershed boundary. I also think the water would look better if it were all one color outside the watershed (now the Willamette and Columbia are light blue and then the other streams are a darker shade). I have no problem leaving Johnson Creek a darker shade as I think it helps make it stand out. Hope my nit picks help, and good work, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:36, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Looking at it again I have a couple more comments - to make it clearer which labels are water features I'd make them a dark blue and I'd flip your italicization (it's a common mapping standard to label water in italics). Kmusser (talk) 18:54, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi Finetooth, I put the coordinates of the creek's source (45.4475, -122.28833) into Google Earth and it gives the elevation as 745 feet, while the USGS Topo map for these coordinates at Acme Mapper gives the elevation as about 740 feet. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:15, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Discovery Map

Yes, I saw that the map had been deleted. From the talk page discussion it seems that there is more than one viewpoint on this. The Commons administrator who did the deletion has now been blocked from Wikipedia for some nameless (unconnected) crime and can't therefore explain. Very annoying for you after the work you did, but our best bet is probably to find a new outline and recreate the map, if you're willing? I'll get back to you. However, if you look at the article discussion page, the latest information seems to be that we can use the original map you created, provided it carries the same acknowledgement of source as the map on the NOAA website does (presumably the Antarctic Digital Database stuff in the bottom rh corner).       • Just have to say, those Location Maps are a god-send. Whoever cooked up that idea and made the base template has saved me (and I'm sure countless others) hours of work. I remember that one used to have to, basically, just use trial and error to pinpoint a location. Now all you need to do is cut and paste the coords. More magical than the microwave. Aiming picture

Thanks for the reply. The only guidance I've seen was on one of the image style pages that recommended flipping faces (where possible) to make them look into the text. This inspired me to start experimenting with orientations. I hear what you are saying about altering reality but I think there can be situations where reality is unaffected. Request for Peer Review help

Thank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue.

1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ...

2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month.

3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in.

My long term plans include getting a bunch more creeks to FA - they are almost all larger than the creek FAs I have already worked on, so I am a bit daunted by the task - I tend to try and find everything possible, but think these may be too big for that. Things visible from New York State Route 32

Mitch and I have been discussing your concern that my description of Route 32 (well, as far as Albany, at least) had some bits about views from the road that you thought might be original research without a cite, and which he accordingly removed from the article.

I had taken this picture specifically to illustrate and support the adjacent text about the views that open up just south of New Paltz. I added geocoding to the file page to further help verify that it was taken along NY 32 south of New Paltz. Per WP:OI this is permitted and encouraged. I am in support of restoring the bit about the views given that it was actually illustrated right next to the text in question; Mitch seems to agree. What's your opinion? Nimrod needs help

I'm sorry to ask for your help—you've given my work plenty of time in the past. However, the Nimrod Expedition article is at FAC, and has been handed a somewhat negative oppose. This reviewer has given a few nit-picky examples of his concerns, and I've asked him to spell out the rest so that I can take appropriate action. All he has said is that the article needs a "thorough copyedit" from an "involved editor", whatever that means. I’m not asking you to do this; actually, I don't agree that a further detailed copyedit is necessary. While I believe that any article can be improved, I've trawled through this one many times, others have taken a hand, and I think that there’s no more mileage to be had from such general editing. What I believe is necessary is for this reviewer, and others, to voice specific concerns that I can address. I'll deal with any number if I know what they are. Would it be possible, if you agree, for you to come to the FAC review and perhaps reinforce this point? There is, incidentally, some support on the review page, but I want this opposer to open out and give me a basis for resolving his problems. Brianboulton (talk) 11:42, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

I revised the awkward quadruple footnoting into just two sets - I think it's useful to have footnotes in the synopsis section, though, as they're somewhat more important, and it would be awkward not to be able to tell a simple reference from a textual difference. Warm thanks to you for helping Nimrod to FA, and for the general interest that you have shown in this series of expedition articles. Re: Geobox Problem

Dincher noticed a problem with Geobox Bridge about the same time, which has also been resolved without any action on his part. I did not see the problems. My guess is there was either Geobox vandalism or a good faith code change that had unintended consequences, or perhaps something with the Wiki software (Peer Review was truncated a while ago because of that). Thanks for the heads up and glad your magic solved the problem. Balch Creek looks lovely and is a nice article - you could perhaps beat Plunketts Creek for shortest stream that is an FA. PR Review

Thanks for alerting me about the new "PR experiment". I'm very interested to see how things turn out! However i won't be able to be part of the "gang of 10" kernel, largely because i'm in the middle of moving so my internet access will be sporadic at best. I'll still look to do 2-3 every month, as usual. Arguments about people not responding seem well founded and 'the a one day/four at once' limit seems like a clear idea and prevents accidental misuse of the service by users unaware of what PR actually consists of. And regarding the talkpage thing - No i don't have a userpage and this serves various purposes: A rejection of the need for userpages, making my "red name/blue talk" stand out when signing, and a strange social experiment to identify how regular users react to someone who looks like a 'redpage new user' (but who actually makes decent edits!). Ayyavazhi - Copy Edit Help

Sir, I found you from the LOCE page. Iam a non-native english editor in Wikipedia and so my English is not well enough to write an article in FA standard. For over several months I've worked in the Ayyavazhi article and've brought it to the present level. The article has also been nominated for FAC and GA but failed. The most important among few reasons is the writen language (low standard english). The other reason then was the citations and now it was rectified. By now the only problem, if exist, may be the 'written language' which may be cleared out by a copy-edit from a good copy-editor well-versed in English.

To be noted, The article also was requested for copy-edit in the LOCE page and was over there for nearly 1 year. But no one did it. Later the request was archived. I wish to nominate the article for FAC. I've seen your user page and noted your broad wiki-edits and too noticed that you could be able to write with proffesional level in English. I feel it will be very much helpful if you can help me. So I kindly request you to do the Copy-edit work in the article and very much request you to give your suggestions for promoting it to FAC level. Also I request to be patient while copy-editing because there are too many citations (foot notes) in the article and so while editing in edit box it may confuse you. I wonder if I could ask you, when you have a few minutes, to look at this article, currently on peer review. It's one of my tenderfoot articles, started last autumn, abandoned, resuscitated and now put, hopefully, into decent shape. User:Ruhrfisch, who has reviewed it, believes it is FA material but suggests another opinion would be useful. The story and the locale will be familiar to you from earlier articles, maps, etc., though you probably won't know Joyce, a relatively minor but nevertheless interesting character. I found some more information on the sufficienty rating (although not the specifics for the way it was calculated for this bridge) and the number of deficient and obsolete bridges in Pennsylvania in 2007.
