... I noticed 1168. Amhlaeibh Mac Innaighneorach, chief ollamh of Ireland in harp-playing, died. (AFM 1168.21 I presume...) Do you know anything more about this guy? I find that the "Chief ollamh" in harp-playing having a name of Norse origin somewhat interesting.

Thanks for your interesting edits to the above article. I took the liberty of placing them in a new section, as IMHO they don't fit in with the following description of traditional music. I was wondering about the use of italics - I'd suggest leaving them out, also de-link the dates, as this usage seems to be frowned upon now, and will probably be removed by a bot anyway? Early Scandinavian Dublin

Thanks for the compliments. I made the maps myself using Inkscape (a freeware paint program for creating SVG images) and some basic SVG outlines of Ireland. Believe me, making the maps was a very time-consuming and laborious task - more so than the actual research and writing of the article! I used Hogan's Onomasticon Goedelicum, T. M. Charles-Edwards' Early Christian Ireland and Ireland's History in Maps to get the borders between territories as accurate as possible. (Eroica (talk) 19:49, 27 March 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Oh, I think you're right, I understand your point. I'm sure I've seen instances in the annals etc. where the names switch back and forth, I just can't find any at the moment to show! I just noticed this GoogleBook snippet about the mentioned poem by Muireadhach Albanach, "Record forms of the name of the addressee suggest Amhalgaidh rather than Amhlaoibh. Ó Corráin and Maguire note that the name Amhalgaidh is 'totally confused' with Amhlaoibh in later medieval sources" [1]. The MS 1467 was possibly written by a member of the MacMhuirich family in the 15th century; it contains numerous genealogies of Scottish families [2]. I suspect you're right about the Hebridean name, though I've noticed that both names have been suggested my particular family (Macaulay_of_Lewis#Uist_MacAulays). re: Bards and harpers

Wooly times for sure. I have this prejudice against harpers and bards, I would normally assume they would be kind of meek. But I saw this funny anecdote of the blind harper Turlough Carolan: In The Complete Works of Turlough O'Carolan Grainne Yeats relates the tale of Carolan and David Murphy (who was harper to Lord Mayo and once played before King Louis XIV of France). Murphy told Carolan that his tunes were like "bones without beef". Carolan thereupon dragged Murphy kicking and screaming through the room. While Murphy screamed Carolan remarked, "Put beef to that air, you puppy." [3] Haha. The word cam is something else I've wondered about. When it's used with people's names. Here's a searchable Irish-English dictionary [4]. It shows cam as 'crooked'; and 'blind' as dall, caoch. One of the heroes of the Lewis Macaulays was a man named Donald Cam; he's described as 'blind in one eye'. But from the definition of cam, and the description of Maol Ruanaidh, it'd seem to me that he was really crossed-eyed (or cross-eyed and blind in an eye)? Lewis tradition has it that Donald Cam lost his eye to a smith who put it out with a poker, but I've read online somewhere that some of his close descendants were known to have 'eye defects', leading at least one person to propose that it might have actually been something genetic. Hi, I started rolling back your edits to the See also sections, thinking it was a new editor, but I see you've been around for a while. That's truly excellent and you never cease to amaze me. My own devotion has failed and my new studies permit me much less time at Wikipedia. But sometimes I come to contribute to Lady Gaga (if you follow my occasional edits) because I happen to be in love with that sexy, crazy little Italian New Yorker. (If you don't listen to her already, you should!)

"Related" to the Ciannachta are the Éile, whom I raised from oblivion a few months ago because I was interested in the Carroll family. Byrne seems to agree with whomever that they were actually Laigin but of course their kinship with the Ciannachta is probably fictional. Possibly tales of Ailill Aulom spread north through the Éile.

What you will have to check is the age of the Ciannachta addition to the Eóganachta family tree. I don't have the resources to do that. The Éile are relatively early but then there is their geographical proximity. DinDraithou (talk) 04:35, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Like James Riabhach Darcy, Ambrose Madden (III), Ambrose Madden (chief), Breasal Madden, John Ó Madadhan, Domhnall Ó Madadhan, Roebuck O'Shaughnessey, Gilla na Naemh Crom Ó Seachnasaigh and Dermott Ó Seachnasaigh, and there is loads more like that, but I don't have time to go through all your contributions. You've been asked by numerous editors on numerous occasions to stop linking dates, each time you have politely responded and agreed to stop doing so, and then you've gone off and kept linking dates. You create numerous articles, yet you appear to value quantity over quality and expect others to clean up after you. When you first contacted me on this subject several months ago, you gave me to understand you meant dates within succession boxes. From then on I studiously avoided doing so, and corrected myself if I inadvertantly did so. So I was puzzled at today's post. So, I checked my recent work, and deduced you must have also meant dates elsewhere in the article. This was not clearly explained to me. Therefore I am in the process of correcting each relevant article. Please in future clearly explain what you mean.

My work tends to be in fairly obscure areas of Irish history and biography. Few others do so. You are probably right that my articles value quantity over quality, but that is where other editors come into play. After all, this is what Wikipedia is all about. If I make mistakes, please inform me, and they will be corrected. You have been the only other person to draw attention to these mistakes, and I have corrected them. As to my nomination, please put your arguments in the approved page, not here. If not granted adminship - a position I did not seek but was gratified to be asked - then I will abide by that, and continue creating articles within my area of interest, in as good a manner as I can. I find it somewhat hard to believe that you only understood this to mean in succession boxes but if you had read WP:UNLINKDATES as I posted on you talk page last December then it might have cleared it up for you. On this archive of your talk page User talk:Fergananim/ArchiveVII there are 4 separate requests from 4 separate users about date linking, none of them specifically refer to succession boxes only but to all dates. Still, if you say you misunderstood, I'll accept it and at least you know now what I mean.

I withdraw that remark about quality over quantity, it was uncalled for. You do alot of good work in quiet corner of wikipedia.   • Ah I see you've got an RfA ready to go live. I've never participated in one, but as it can be a harrowing experience for candidates, it might be good to think long and hard about why you need the extra set of tools, whether it won't distract you from more valuable work, and if there's any way you can demonstrate (especially to editors who're not familiar with your work) that you're fit to use them. There will be some who demand a certain amount of experience in admin-related areas, such as dispute resolution. No doubt there's an archive of past RfAs (both successful and failed) available if you like to see some examples. You're an amazingly quick editor and no doubt a valuable colleague at that (!), but to be frank, you also tend to be a tad sloppy and seem to be unaware of some basic guidelines, as shown for instance by the lack of inline citations (please work on that). Then again, it has to be said, you're always ready to take on advice and part of the problem may be that in the silent corner of medieval Irish history, no one has stopped by to report any problem. Hey, I can't blame you for the shortage of editors working in this area! By inline citations I simply mean that per WP:Citing sources#Inline citations, (more) footnotes are required which specify the sources (by page number) used for any facts and opinions that are stated in the article, rather than say, a generic list of references near the bottom of the page. BTW, if during your Rfa you encounter any far-fetched or irrelevant questions, just tell them "that would be an ecumenical matter!" - that's usually how I get around. Let's keep this a fun secret...

On my new userpage I say I'm 99% done, which is true, but I've continued to expand a select few articles, including Donnell II O'Donovan and Donnell III O'Donovan. I'm so glad to see that you've created the line of O'Shaughnessy chiefs.

In fact the current O'Donovan chiefly line, through a little inbreeding, do descend from Sir Roger Gilla Dubh Ó Seachnasaigh through his daughter Gylles. At some point the cadet line married a daughter of the senior line before it died out. I will try to find where and then we will be able to say Sir Roger is survived by a present family. Note that through Daniel O'Donovan (MP Baltimore) he is/was survived by the MacFineen Duff O'Sullivans, about whom I know nothing. DinDraithou (talk) 16:46, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is a romantic and apparently rather long History of the O'Donovans written in the early 1800s by the celebrated poet Collins of Myross. It has been used as a source by John O'Donovan, O'Hart and others, but it is still in MS in Dublin, so I have no access to it. I have only followed the numbering in their works, which provide little "Gaelic" detail. The O'Donovan chiefs themselves have been more English than Irish for over two centuries and that has certainly had an influence.

Unless I was dreaming, I actually came across an article on Collins of Myross here at Wikipedia, but I have never been able to find it again. His name is variously spelled of course. I vaguely recall him being mentioned somewhere as belonging to the same Collins sept as the one and only Michael from the same region. They are lesser landed cousins to the O'Donovans, but still recall when they were once the more powerful family in earlier times. Collins' History was inspired by their relationship. I waited to respond about your research because I didn't want to sound foolish. Now I want to ask, are you looking for the new senior line or is it more a matter of finding any descendants? Is it made difficult by the fact that one O'Shaughnessy submitted to Henry VIII? It seems to me that the O'Shaughnessy today might be any descendant of the last several chiefs of the name who is greatly respected and/or well-to-do. Joseph, who died in 1783, was the last verified Chief of the Name. However, Bartholomew O'Shaughnessey seems to have been the next chief, IF his genealogy is correct. I am trying to track down Bartholomew, his brother Andrew, and their descendants, but am having limited success. His line of descent is however a matter of debate, and that needs to be examined too. So I'm using him as a starting point, going backwards and forwards in time. Hopefully, I should arrive at some conclusions. I've been aware of Sean Murphy since before he did Irish studies a service by breaking the 'MacCarthy' Mor scandel. I admire his work from a distance, for my own reasons. I take my lead from a different scholar entirely. Nash is one of the few newbloods in the feild but I have not been able to read much of her work yet. My research is purely for vocational reasons. Hi Ferfananim, I have an article almost prepared to put onto Wikipedia. I believe it may be of interest to you. It's Táin Bó Flidhais. I find the Táin Bó Cuailnge article a little academic for a general reader. Mine is nothing like as academically written and I have just told the story basically (plus a note on local variations) without going into all the different aspects of Ulster cycles tales and sagas etc...) as the Cuailnge version has done. I'm aware there is an article called Flidais (I believe the correct spelling to be Flidhais) but it tells nothing except to briefly describe the person who Flidhais was reported to have been (according to annals etc..). You're a more experienced Wikipedian than I am and I would like to know if you'll have a look at my article before I download if this is possible. I intend to link it to several areas of (particularly) North Mayo (particularly the Kilcommon articles I have created over the past several months and several of which you have added things to do with tribal kings and kingdoms in Ireland pre Anglo Norman times) where many incidences described therein occurred. If not, I'll just put it on myself and try to get it sufficiently referenced etc.... so that I don't get a barrage of notices of all sorts or even get it deleted or something.
