Question from Ana Turashvili (11:14, 23 September 2024)

Hello, how do I translate an article into my language? do I create a new one ? --Ana Turashvili (talk) 11:14, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Ana Turashvili. Help:Translation outlines the instructions on how to translate pages into English, though translating articles into your own language may require looking elsewhere. Which language are you looking to translate English Wikipedia articles into? The wiki for that language might have instructions on how to do that. Question from RunawaySlim on Beverly Garland (02:50, 3 October 2024)

Hello there mentor, I would like to edit this page but it's only giving me the option to edit something that is not what I want to change. It's basically giving me the option to edit the first couple of paragraphs of this entire entry. Am I to understand that the section that I would like to edit is not able to be edited?

Thanks Choggie --RunawaySlim (talk) 02:50, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @RunawaySlim. That's strange, I'm not sure why that occurred. Could you try it one more time to see if you are able to edit the page by clicking on the "edit" button around the top of the page? You should be able to edit the entire page since it is not protected from editing, and you don't appear to be blocked. It might just be a technical issue on your end but I would recommend trying one more time just to be sure. Fathoms Below (talk) 19:46, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Husam.bell on Visa requirements for Canadian citizens (10:08, 3 October 2024)

Hello,

how I can edit the visa requirements map in order to change Syria and Cuba into evisa countries ? can you please help --Husam.bell (talk) 10:08, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Husam.bell I'm not sure on how to label the map to show that Syria and Cuba are eVisa countries. Maybe you could ask at the teahouse for guidance? There are a lot of different users that may be able to help you change the map. Just make sure that your changes to the map are supported by reliable sources that can verify that Syria and Cuba require eVisas. Any other questions? You can ask both here on this page or at the teahouse as well. Fathoms Below (talk) 19:51, 3 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Andrea Expert

Hello! Can you help me with my new article? I wrote an article "The largest universities in Russia by the number of students". Please take a look, have I done everything correctly? Respectfully yours. --Andrea Expert (talk) 10:42, 10 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Andrea Expert Hi there. Sorry for the late response, I was really sick for a while. From a quick glance, the list of universities shouldn't be organized by numbers unless it meets certain conditions (see MOS:NUMLIST), but instead by tables (see Help:Table). Maybe take a look at featured lists to see how they format their tables? Tables are really complicated and took me a little while to figure out myself, so maybe you could ask at the teahouse for more specific advice? The table on List of Swiss universities by enrollment might be a good place of reference for designing your own table. Fathoms Below (talk) 15:32, 14 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Moderator Tools newsletter - Issue #2

Welcome to issue #2 of the Moderator Tools newsletter! It's been about a year since the first one (sorry for the delay), but we're excited to tell you what our team has been working on since then, and where you can guide our ongoing and upcoming work.

Automoderator

Automoderator's configuration page as of September 2024.

Automoderator is now feature-complete for its initial release! Automoderator is a highly configurable automated anti-vandalism tool which reverts edits that a machine learning model determines to be vandalism. It can be enabled, disabled, and configured at any time by administrators via a Community Configuration form. Automoderator is now in use on Indonesian, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese Wikipedias, with other projects at various stages of discussion and setup. You can track data about Automoderator's activity so far via a Superset dashboard. To request Automoderator on your Wikimedia project, please refer to the deployment steps.

We are wrapping up our focused time developing Automoderator while we review data and feedback about its impact. We also still plan to provide support for small Wikimedia projects with few/no administrators (T372280), and integrate the multilingual revert risk model, which is an improved version of the model currently in use, with support for 47 language Wikipedias. We're looking for support testing the multilingual model to better understand its behaviour - please check out the testing process and review some edits!

Nuke extension ('Mass delete')

During the 2024-2025 Wikimedia Foundation fiscal year, our team wants to make improvements to the software that moderators (patrollers, administrators, stewards, etc.) are using today, rather than focusing on building new tools. Although it's valuable to build new features, it's also important that we continue maintaining the important tools that are already being used to maintain and improve Wikipedia's quality.

Nuke search interface.

One such project is to make usability and feature improvements to the Nuke extension (known as 'mass delete' on some projects). We have contracted a community developer, Chlod, who has worked on the extension in the past, to help us with this! With the Nuke project, we hope to make a number of improvements, including additional filters, increasing the deletion time range, automated deletion of related pages, and bug fixes. Read more about this project, and provide feedback, at Extension:Nuke/2024 Moderator Tools project.

Recent Changes

As part of our efforts to improve existing impactful moderator tooling, we are working on a project for a few months to make improvements to Special:RecentChanges and related workflows. We will be prioritizing work for this project on an ongoing basis, but have some larger projects that we will solicit input for via our project page. We have a brief survey at Moderator Tools/Survey:Recent Changes to gather input for this project - please answer the questions if you're interested.

Task prioritization

Finally, looking to the future, we plan to research and work on tasks identified as part of the Community Wishlist focus area titled 'task prioritization'. We'll be looking for opportunities to speak with editors about how they decide what needs their attention, and in particular will be investigating the Watchlist to see where we might be able to make usability and feature improvements. If you have thoughts about opportunities in this focus area please share them on the task prioritization talk page, or file a new wish!

Although we have active engineering projects ongoing, we're always happy to chat about your community's content moderation tool needs - feel free to get in contact at Talk:Moderator Tools to let us know where you think we should focus our efforts. Stages of death

Hello, you left a message earlier.

When I made a change, I provided a source (journal article) once in the body (see article history) because I didn't want to repeat it 12 times in the references section at the bottom. Can I add the content back if I provide 12 citations for the same source (I added it before, but only once)? Thanks. Npabe (talk) 00:18, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Npabe When you source the material, you should add an inline citation if the material is likely to be challenged. Since the material you cited could be challenged since it's complex health information instead of something obvious like "the sky is blue", you should add inline citations. Have you seen the page Help:Referencing for beginners? It provides some quick tips on how sources can be added and cited inline. Fathoms Below (talk) 00:24, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, just wanted to clear up my request for deletion by CSD A7 on the article Xinjiang Silk Road Eagle F.C.. Your reasons to decline the request were that

1. "[The club competes] in the fourth-tier of Chinese football ... is probably enough for a CCS." First of all, by looking at 2024 Chinese Champions League, the most recent edition of the Chinese fourth-tier, it is clear to see that none of these clubs justify an English Wikipedia article (and most do not have an article at all), with the exception of Heze Caozhou F.C. which earned a promotion spot to the third-tier but chose to not get promoted. Furthermore, the Chinese Champions League has no permanent members; every season, their entry into the league is determined by their performances in their provincial league/competition, and in 2024, Xinjiang Silk Road Eagle simply won the Xinjiang tournament to progress into the Chinese Champions League. Therefore, no parts of your claim there were correct.

2. "Xinjiang's first membership-based football club". I do not see why this is important in the on-field performance of the club, which is the main goal for any football club; "membership-based" is just how the club runs itself. To elaborate on the semantics of "membership-based": I looked into their membership mechanism when the club was first founded and it just seems like every fan can buy a membership, with only a select few fans getting a say in the boardroom of the football club. Claiming it's membership-based is probably an inaccurate claim, it just sounds like any football club which sells memberships.

In addition, in no parts of the body of the article does it mention the club's on-field performances, which, considering the club only played five official matches since its foundation, explains why it doesn't mention any matches or seasons.

If you need elaboration on any of my points, please ask me for such. IDontHaveSkype (talk) 19:41, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) @IDontHaveSkype: We don't reapply CSD tags once declined. However, @Fathoms Below: looks WP:G11 to me. YMMV. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 20:36, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, asserts significance, -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 20:37, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Deepfriedokra: Sorry, was not made aware of this rule. However, the page was already deleted once with CSD A7, I don't understand what changed between then and now. IDontHaveSkype (talk) 21:03, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some of us are over eager in deleting. Once declined,it should not be retagged. Unless something has changed, any contest of a CSD tag makes it ineligible for speedy deletion. Speedy deletions are for content that is obviously, uncontroversially speediable. We need to hear back from Fathoms Below. FWIW, I never delete per a7. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 21:46, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @IDontHaveSkype. I don't know much about Chinese football, but a credible claim of significance basically says that if there is a reasonable claim in the article that could plausibly show that the page could be notable with more research. It also says "A claim of significance need not be self-evidently true, but should not be blatantly false. A blatant hoax, or a claim so improbable that no one of sound mind would believe it, is not a plausible claim of significance — use the {{db-hoax}} template to tag those." I felt like the page asserted significance and it's claims were not immediately obvious to be false, even if those claims were borderline and the page does contain promotional material. My interpretation would probably also be different than @Deepfriedokra's, since you could remove the first paragraph of the History section on that page and it probably wouldn't be unambiguously promotional and qualify for G11. I also looked at the old version of the article that was deleted as an A7 in June of this year, and its contents are much different than the current article. Either way, if you still feel like the page isn't notable I suggest taking the article to WP:AFD and giving your arguments there for why it should be deleted. Fathoms Below (talk) 01:18, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 07:22, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Rabia Raheel (15:22, 20 December 2024)

how to create my page on wikipedia --Rabia Raheel (talk) 15:22, 20 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do I properly nominate a recreated article for deletion that has gone through CSD once?

I do not know this process, but I am trying to nominate Naveen Singh Suhag for deletion. How do I do the nomination? DACartman (talk) 07:02, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@DACartman You can try nominating the article at Articles for deletion by giving an argument about why the subject of the page does not meet notability guidelines. Notability is a complex subject on Wikipedia, but put simply means that a subject can't have an article unless there are multiple reliable sources (such as books or reputable newspapers) that discuss the subject in-depth. If you have questions about notability, I suggest reading the blue-linked pages in this comment, or you can ask at the teahouse for clarification.
