Hi JeyReydar97, when you translate articles from another wiki you have to add attribution. (Wikipedia:Translation#License requirements) Please do so on all articles you've translated. Thanks Nobody (talk) 10:05, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for reaching me out on this. I noticed that you have used this ("auto-translated from German by Module:CS1 translator") template to indicate translation in the Atrium Tower article. Should I incorporate this exact template into the first reference of any German-translated article that I've previously created? JeyReydar97 (talk) 11:54, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That template was added by the bot who substituted the german templates you had added. You should use Translated page on all article talkpages when you create a translated article page and also mention it in the edit summary by using something like Content in this edit is translated from the existing German Wikipedia article at :de:Exact name of German article; see its history for attribution. Nobody (talk) 12:15, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see. I forgot to add the template in this case. JeyReydar97 (talk) 12:45, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, JeyReydar97,and welcome to Wikipedia. And thanks to 1AmNobody24 for notifying you about adding translation attribution for all translations from other Wikipedias. Regarding attribution, I just wanted to make it clear that the use of the Translated page template on an article talkpage is strictly optional, but the edit summary attribution is required by Wikipedia's licensing and must be provided. The text quoted by Nobody above is accurate; however, if you forget to provide the translation attribution with your original edit, you still have to provide it in the edit summary; you cannot just walk away. You can add it later using a dummy edit. There is slightly altered wording you should use after the fact, which you can find at Repairing insufficient attribution. I see no translation attribution in the page history of Atrium Tower of either type, and it is still required, so you should add that wording now, using the wording given at WP:RIA. If you are not sure how to do this, or if you need help, please let me know and I will do it for you.

Going forward, please always add translation attribution to the edit summary when you add translated content (see WP:TFOLWP), and if you forget, then just add it later as soon as you remember, using the edit summary wording at WP:RIA. Note: the translated page template on the Talk page is a nice-to-have, but is optional. I always use it, because I think it is a good idea, and is helpful to other editors working on the page, so I hope you will do that too, but edit-summary attribution first, and always, please. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 21:57, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The article Sunrise Tower (Zurich) which you created also lacks required attribution. Please follow WP:RIA and add it now, and to any other articles for which you have previously added translated content. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 22:26, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I recently added a subsection translated from the original German counterpart of Steglitzer Kreisel. I used the very example that Nobody has handed me above. Can you please check the 'Revision history' section to see if it's enough for correctly providing the translation attribution? If I'm not mistaken, I should use the exact template for every translation I do, right? JeyReydar97 (talk) 22:26, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, JeyReydar97. Yes; in your edit of 22:17, 11 December 2024 at Steglitzer Kreisel, you provided the correct wording in the edit summary, and correctly linked the source article; that complies with the licensing requirement for that edit. However, there is another issue:
I see that you are a prolific creator of new articles, many of which are translations. The fact is, that any and all of the articles in that list (including older ones than those) that contain translated content will have to have the required translation attribution added to the summary after the fact, as specified at WP:RIA. I realize that on the one hand, this will be very burdensome, but on the other, the difficulty involved does not absolve us of this licensing requirement. I know that in the past, when other types of adjustments to an editor's contributions had to be made en masse, that this has been done via a bot, to avoid the need to laboriously do them one by one. I honestly don't know if a bot is available for adding missing required attribution, but I have asked about this at the Bot noticeboard. The requirement stands, but it doesn't say you have to do it immediately; maybe a bot can do it for you (with your help, in providing the list of articles). Please stay tuned. Going forward, please keep doing what you did at Steglitzer Kreisel, because you did it right. Thanks for your cooperation in this. Btw: I happen to do translations as well, and if you have any translation-related issues, feel free to contact me here, or on my Talk page. Cheers, Mathglot (talk) 02:08, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If the translation is added in a single edit and it is the first revision of the page, we can include a timestamp in the dummy edit summary. But if the translated content is added in multiple edits, we have to use an edit summary like: Dummy edit to note that the content added in previous edits by User:JeyReydar97 was translated from the existing German Wikipedia article at :de:Exact name of German article; see its history for attribution.DreamRimmer (talk) 11:53, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for helping me out with this. I translated dozens of skyscraper articles from German, Chinese and Spanish counterparts with the mention that most of the articles I created feature slightly or significantly more information and refs than their counterparts which sometimes were even lacking of any references (for example see the Hochhaus Neue DonauHochhaus Neue Donau tandem). I track down every article I have previously created so I always keep an eye on them if needed. It won't bother me to manually insert translation attribution templates to them if possible. I don't consider it as being laborious work. I'll also keep an eye on this discussion to see if it's possible for a bot edit strategy to be found in the near future. I'm willing to help as much as I can. Regards! JeyReydar97 (talk) 14:08, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JeyReydar97, that would be great if you can do them on your own, but if it is too laborious, another user at the Bot page discussion came up with another method (AWB) which could work for a handful of pages. Before you go and do all of them, why don't you just do two or three, and then ping me, and I'll have a look and make sure you are on the right track; it would be a shame to do all of them wrong, and then have to redo them. The wording to look at for you past articles is documented at WP:RIA, and DreamRimmer's version works well if multiple past edits are involved. The wording for future edits where you attribute with the original save, is different, and is at WP:TFOLWP. I really appreciate your reaction and your helpful attitude. Mathglot (talk) 03:07, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think there has been some misunderstanding. I already mentioned that it is possible to run a bot to attribute these types of translations. When I said I am ready to help with this task, I meant I will be using a Python script, the same as a bot does, since it will be fully automated. I will not use a bot account; instead, I will handle it with my alt account, as BRFAs take time. I will keep the edit rate low and run it in supervised mode for the first few edits to ensure everything works correctly. I will also share the script so others can use it in the future. If you are comfortable handling it yourself without any tool, that is absolutely fine. – DreamRimmer (talk) 03:27, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DreamRimmer: I think we are still on the same page. Someone came in after you at Bot NB and mentioned an AWB solution for just a small number of pages; that's what I was referring to @03:07. I am still counting on your bot[-like] solution, as I think there are more than that, but will have to wait on JeyReydar97 for the last word on that.
Speaking of which: Jey, Do you know roughly how many unattributed translations you have? Also, how hard would it be to come up with a list of your unattributed articles, the name of its foreign Wikipedia article source, and the edit timestamp of your translation? Please note : I am not asking you to build such a list, just to estimate it. So you can see what I am talking about, I have created a mock-up at User talk:JeyReydar97/Attribution set zero (example) based on some of your recent creations (all of those are already attributed; thanks!). That might be a format a bot could use to add missing attributions. Mathglot (talk) 08:30, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can manually write down each of my unattributed articles in the mock-up user talk from above. It will take me like maybe half an hour or so. JeyReydar97 (talk) 08:45, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that's not too burdensome. Go ahead, and if a different format is decided upon, it won't matter, because I can write a regex to convert it to whatever the new format is. `Mathglot (talk) 10:01, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's not burdensome, however there's lots of them that I'm currently listing. This is apparently an urgent matter. JeyReydar97 (talk) 10:08, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Updated The list has been uploaded. I think we can move there for further discussion. JeyReydar97 (talk) 11:07, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mathglot: Thank you for taking the time to prepare the proposal. I have reviewed it, and it looks good to me. I can help implement the functionality to automate this task. For now, I suggest we proceed with adding translation attribution to the articles currently listed by JeyReydar97. If more articles come up, my userspace would be a good place to make future requests. If this becomes a recurring issue, I will file a BRFA, and we can then move the request page to the project space. If you could provide me with an edit summary format for the current articles, I would appreciate it. – DreamRimmer (talk) 11:38, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Mathglot & JeyReydar97: I have written code to add attribution to the articles listed by JeyReydar97. Please let me know when I can start. I will use the following format for the edit summary: Dummy edit to note that the content added in the previous edit of 23:23, 27 November 2024 (UTC) by JeyReydar97 was translated from the Hebrew Wikipedia article :he:מגדלי הצעירים; see that article's history for attribution. Please let me know if it needs any adjustments. – DreamRimmer (talk) 15:19, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Example edit: Special:Diff/1263082708DreamRimmer (talk) 16:15, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
DreamRimmer, that example looks good. Can you run a debug run on the whole set, so just logging the output per the spec without editing anything? I'll look over the whole log, and make sure everything looks right, and if so, we can launch it. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 17:58, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, can you append a brief parenthetical about the bot with a link to its page to the edit summary, something like '(added by BotName)' or similar? Mathglot (talk) 18:03, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Jey, your list is now in its own file, at User:JeyReydar97/Attribution set 1. @Dream: I'll ping you at the spec Talk page regarding a proposed change to the 'comment line' definition. Mathglot (talk) 22:05, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, I'm not as advanced in programming as you guys are so let me know if there are any operational instructions for me to follow in this special movement! JeyReydar97 (talk) 23:19, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing at the moment. As Dream is in agreement in principle with the bot description, I am making some further updates to it, almost entirely for clarity, and very little involving any substantive change. Will be ready soon for a debug run, which we can all look at before pulling the switch. Mathglot (talk) 00:37, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
First debug run complete, and results can be viewed here. No articles were edited; this is just to log the generated edit summaries that would be used in a live run. Mathglot (talk) 10:11, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Expansion Translation Effort for Steglitzer Kreisel

JeyReydar97, thank you for adding the two translated sections from the German counterpart article to the English version of the Steglitzwer Kreisel article that I have not added myself already, as well as adding the transcribed references.

Another thing to be taken into account is any major updates for Steglitzer Kreisel itself since the completion of this effort, which may be posted in the German article for it, but not in the English article for it (for example, restarting of work on that tower's residential conversion could be one such update). There is also one more translated section left to add to the English article: "Miscellaneous", one of two subsections there focuses on its use as a filming location. Jim856796 (talk) 20:11, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your notice. I do have the article on "watch this page" so if any updates on the renovation of the building appear on the German counterpart I should immediately see them. I sometimes do patroll various of the articles I've translated from other languages. And I've recently added the missing subsections you mentioned above under a simpler main section of Trivia. JeyReydar97 (talk) 22:21, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is that assistance I had asked you for enough for you to add yourself to the Translators Available page? Jim856796 (talk) 15:40, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I only cover skyscrapers and professional wrestling related articles when it comes to translations so I'm not sure about it. Can you please point out that list so I can first have a look and give it a thought? JeyReydar97 (talk) 20:03, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
