Thanks for the reply. I'd like to use the picture that's in a couple of the sources of the rail car sticking up in the air. Wikipedia may be able to use some of those images as the copyright claims are suspect (how can a blog created in 200x claim copyright on an image taken in 1939?). However, I'm not an expert on copyright law. If we're lucky the publicity generated from appearing on the main page will cause someone who is more familiar with copyright law to take a look and upload a photo if appropriate. That's the good thing about trying to get your work on the main page, people like that will see it. The bad thing is the haters with axes to grind will also see it, and be sure to tell you how ignorant you are. IMO the good outweighs the bad.Dave (talk) 15:29, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good to me. I also believe I have the coordinates for it, but I'm not sure how to add them. On Google Earth, it's 40*43'22.99"N and 116*01'07.62"W. I know how to add them, but I gave up on trying to determine the exact location of the wreck, so I didn't. In this view (I use acme as they have most USA rail sidings visible in the topo map view, including Harney)[1] I've activated 3 markers, left is Harney; middle is some obvious track and river relocation to reduce the curvature of the line. I don't know if that relocation was done before or after the 1939 accident. If the tracks were moved after, it's possible (and likely) the visible sharp curve in the old alignment is where it happened. However there are no bridges there now. Assuming this relocation happened before and the tracks are essentially the same today as then, the right marker is a bridge I initially suspected, of being "the one". However, I now think "the one" is more likely the bridge just to the west of the one I marked. Dave (talk) 00:58, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
For me, even if we mark it wrong, I feel like someone will eventually come along and correct it. Wikimapia is saying 40°43'30"N 116°2'30"W. That can also be a temporary reference for now. I just saw the Wikimapia entry, it took me a while to find it. I'm not comfortable with using that location, it's on the wrong side of the city of Carlin from everything I understand about the accident. However, checking the user's other contributions (User:mercha283), they seem to be a fairly experienced wiki user. Ha Ha! If all goes as planned, the article will be on the DYK section of the main page on July 4th (of all dates). Let's see what happens, we'll either get some help with the pictures and location or be publicly flogged. ;) I have to say I haven't nominated an article for Did You Know in many years, and wow has the process changed since I last did it. Just wanted to pop in and say I appreciate your contributions to the One-Hit Wonders in the United States list! I love that list and I'm glad that there is someone else very active on there as well! If I may ask, what is your favorite song that you've added thus far?
I’ve been obsessed with one-hit wonders since I was a kid. I used to contribute to a site called one-hit wonder center, but it’s gone dead since 2020. My goal is to transfer as much as that info here before their domain gets shut down for good.
There’s a lot I’m trying to add but I can’t find secondary sources besides chart history (like Don Ho’s “Tiny Bubbles”).
Was surprised no one added The Fendermen or Homer & Jethro so I corrected that! I guess those two would be my favorites I added.
I guess while this conversation, I added some points to the Talk section of the page, particularly organizing the page by acts that are confirmed as one hit wonders, versus those who are disputed to have that reputation. I would love to see A-ha on this page even with their follow-up “The Sun Always Shines on TV”.
It would be a tedious edit, and I’d do my part to research and find sources, but it would mostly serve to give a more thorough look at these acts discographies.
But that’s a decision I’ll let you consider. Will keep on researching acts for the meantime.
PS when the page’s format change from the chart form? It looked really great - I understand it was changed to accommodate acts that didn’t chart in Top 40, but I’d love to see something like that again. Exiasprip (talk) 22:34, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
