I am using User:Evad37/rater and I would not like to have articles I tag WikiProjects for to be on my watchlist. How can I prevent this from happening? I am not watching this page, so please ping me in your reply. Interstellarity (talk) 18:01, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
HNY - there was avery odd bit this evening when it didnt want to auto load a term at all - maybe while you were adjusting things? JarrahTree14:26, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
HNY2U2. No updates to Rater since Dec 27 - it might have had trouble with weird formatting on a particular page? Or was it (not) happening on several pages? - Evad37[talk]19:58, 2 January 2020 (UTC)
A request for comment asks whether partial blocks should be enabled on the English Wikipedia. If enabled, this functionality would allow administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces, rather than the entire site.
A proposal asks whether admins who don't use their tools for a significant period of time (e.g. five years) should have the toolset procedurally removed.
The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
is going very well, but perth-importance=low on something like Nicholson Road railway station makes no registration on the talk page - is that something that can be fixed relatively easily ? JarrahTree10:34, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
That's more to do with the {{WikiProject Australia}} template than rater. From memory |Perth=yes adds both Perth and WA projects, and |Perth-importance= is an alias for |WA-importance=. Which is unintuitive and a bit weird, and possibly a remnant from when the Perth project was downgraded to a task force some years ago. - Evad37[talk]13:39, 6 January 2020 (UTC)
btw in rater perth=y still invokes a wa tag as welll... any chance of separating out ? JarrahTree 10:24, 10 January 2020 (UTC):: have not put it to discussion - as from memory neither sydney or melbourne have the state tags accompanying the city project tags JarrahTree10:36, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
We have to figure out what structure to adopt, especially for articles currently tagged for WA using Perth parameters... see my post at WT:WA - Evad37[talk]01:37, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
ivytanks and cattle grids
actually feel very out of the tone of the article - I was considering a separate article about the 'early days' on the older track (the sa side was literally a sand track for a vast distance in the 70s it was murderous and cattle grids were something that could kill vehicles... - so maybe better in a separate article do you think? JarrahTree14:12, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
hema maps (in the 1990s) had much better delineation of the 'old eyre highway' section between nullarbor petrol stop and yalata - I think it might be possible to find things relative to the conditions and the idiosyncracies of the inland route that it took - the current alignment is to the coast... one aspect of it is that is now completely located inside the nullarbor regional park in south australia and I think they have restricted access to it... JarrahTree14:21, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
brilliant item [1] is very encouraging - that is something that brings back memories of the damned cattle grids, and the sandy track on the sa side - I think I will excise the item in the main article immediately, thanks for your considering that ... JarrahTree14:35, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
I havent, I can see your recentedit and will leave it - thanks - as you have provided very good context, I just wish my photos were easier to access,it will take me months or half a year to track them down... starting now - JarrahTree14:47, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
the article now exists with trove links, scrappy start... at least it gets ivytanks out of the main highway article :) JarrahTree15:27, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for your help, as well as the meetup linkings btw - and apologies about messing up eyre highway - what is your thought on creating an eyre highway category for those places on it to be linked in that way ? JarrahTree15:59, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
Bon Marche Arcade
Thanks for the great work you've been doing on these heritage buildings.
I noticed when I was reading Bon Marché Arcade (was always curious about that place!) that two of the sources seem to disagree: the article is based on the Heritage Council report, but the ABC report on the renovations says it was built by someone else in 1895 and then extended by Brookman in 1901. Normally I'd go with the Heritage Council in the case of a disagreement, but the ABC story seems a bit specific to have just gotten their facts wrong (and isn't necessarily incompatible with what the Heritage Council says). Any chance you're able to reconcile the two? The Drover's Wife (talk) 08:14, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
Done - I found a historical newspaper ref that provides more information. The heritage council presumably weren't aware of that source, though they did say nor has any other reference been found which indicates additions rather than a new building. - Evad37[talk]10:06, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

rater seems to be not loading projects - have re-set firefox a few times, and it doesnt seem to be loading - could it be my java or something else? JarrahTree09:17, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
then it goes back to normal, I am wondering if page refresh or something similar is needed at some point hen using over time? JarrahTree09:52, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
it never seems to last long, so I am assuming there is something that is not particularly bad, it always comes good... must say it is the most brilliant device in my edit history to help assessment issues - trust the 'success stats' are good for it - if there are ways to measure its uasage JarrahTree10:01, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Nope - it has happened more often, and I have been very careful in bypassing cache, even rebooting, there are times where nothing shows in the top line when trying to enter a new project... It is disconcerting to say the least. JarrahTree 00:26, 18 January 2020 (UTC) The with no fanfare it rebounds... JarrahTree00:53, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
Its weird that it stops and starts... not entirely sure why that would be. Are there particular pages where it doesn't work at all? - Evad37[talk]02:47, 18 January 2020 (UTC)
Fixed the redlink with a purge. Will need to do some more coding of Rater to prevent assessment dropdowns from showing when they shouldn't. - Evad37[talk]12:29, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.
Technical news
Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [4]
Arbitration
Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.
Twinkle has a new update (more). It now supports partial blocks and includes the select2 library as a dependency. Select2 is available at MediaWiki:Gadget-select2.min.js for other gadgets and scripts to use.

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.
Redirects
New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.
Discussions and Resources
There is an ongoing discussion around changing notifications for new editors who attempt to write articles.
A resource page with links pertinent for reviewers was created this month.
A proposal to increase the scope of G5 was withdrawn.
Refresher
Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.
Technical news
Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.
the formality of the issue might be lost on some, but the implication is we have received funding from wmau which in turn has from wmf, and to continue to have meetings would be tantamount to putting wmau funding at risk, imho. JarrahTree00:24, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
Churches
Hi, I suppose your request at the Churches infobox didn't get much feedback either? Perhaps now with more usage across Wikipedia and in infoboxes, that user's stance might change... Their idea of greater detail is the reverse; mapframe allows for way more detail... AS well, customizable preset zoom levels are part of mapframe as well. There was a recent discussion about pros and cons here; definitely clear positives there for mapframe. ɱ(talk)01:39, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
@Ɱ: Yeah, enough time has probably passed to revisit that and other infoboxes not using mapframe maps. Do you think it's worth trying to get a general consensus at a central venue like the village pump? - Evad37[talk]01:53, 27 March 2020 (UTC)
Have you asked at {{Infobox park}}? That would be a very handy addition as well; I don't think there's -any- maplink ability for that template right now? ɱ(talk)23:24, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
Well, I guess map_image works, though it's not mentioned as supporting the maplink template anywhere in the infobox template's documentation... Your code would be preferable anyhow. ɱ(talk)23:25, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
@Ɱ: I was starting to go through Template:Buildings and structures infobox templates, I don't remember how far I got. Most didn't get too much feedback, but it was quite controversial for a couple of them. We should probably get a Wikipedia: namespace project page to track infoboxes for which mapframe maps would be relevant, rather than just using our talk pages. I'm thinking we could list infoboxes in a table, with some columns to indicate: Mapframe maps proposed (or date of proposal), consensus (pending / in favour / against), mapframe maps added to template, documentation updated – sort of like the Wikipedia:Coordinates in infoboxes page. - Evad37[talk]04:59, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi, thought you might be interested in noting that I created a Node.js bot framework - mwn. Mainly to beat the lockdown boredom, but also because existing NodeJS bot libraries suck - they have limited very feature sets and use outdated methods and technologies (callbacks instead of promises, JSON with the old formatversion, etc). Since you're a expert JS user, your contributions would be very much appreciated! There is a list of open tasks if you want to help out. 20:41, 8 April 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by SD0001 (talk • contribs)
Thanks for the note SD0001. It looks interesting, and I have been meaning to learn how to code a bot. I'm currently spending much of my time trying to finish off the XFDcloser version 4 rewrite (github repo). - Evad37[talk]11:03, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
Good to know. Have you considered using the localhost import trick for testing? With that, you can test code from your local file without having to edit the on-wiki script page every time. Also, I'd suggest using the testwiki:, as there you can test outside userspace too, probably giving a more realistic environ (though you may have to import the required templates first). And lastly, user:enterprisey/undo-last-edit is convenient for quickly reverting test edits. SD0001 (talk) 14:11, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the tips, by the way. I've been hesitant in the past to use testwiki given how reliant the script is on templates and the rendered html of pages, and that I've already got test versions working in my userspace, but I decided to try it out. I'm still waiting for permissions on testwiki, and then I'll have to work out which templates need to be imported... - Evad37[talk]03:50, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
Proposed changes to MonthlyArchive - you may be interested
Hi there, I saw your previous comments on the MonthlyArchive template talk page about the issues which the template has, and I wanted to let you know I've proposed some changes to the template which would hopefully address them. However, they are breaking changes for archiving bots, and would require some (minor) modifications to the bots so that they would be compatible.
Enterprisey's reply-link has been updated to fail less, especially around template transclusions.

The mediawiki.notify resource loader module was deprecated and is no longer needed; its functionality is now available by default. See mw:ResourceLoader/Migration guide (users) for more. Any dependency on it should be removed.
Twinkle's Morebits library added a new Morebits.date class to replace the moment library. It can handle custom formatting and natural language for dates, as well as section header regexes. If you were using getUTCMonthName or getUTCMonthNameAbbrev with Date objects, those have been deprecated and should be updated.

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

It is possible to turn off point markers in Module:Infobox_mapframe but infobox templates will need to be updated to use {{#invoke:Infobox mapframe|auto}} instead of {{Infobox mapframe}} to make all current (and any future) options available – in this case |mapframe-point=none. - Evad37[talk]06:44, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
Only read this now - does this mean it's not preferable to do this? Instead could we add a "map_image" parameter to the infobox (as well as infobox building) to allow the maplink template to be used with "type=shape"? ɱ(talk)18:41, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
@Ɱ: Using the #invoke method would be preferable – less code within the infobox template itself, and it makes all the optional parameters available. - Evad37[talk]00:22, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
Hi again, so with the RfC doing well to end up with many more infoboxes getting mapframe parameters, I'd like to ask if we can try to standardize a little better. For the automatic mapframe parameters, we've been so far using hyphens between words. Is there any specific reasoning for it? Other infobox parameters almost universally have underscores between words - see {{infobox museum}} as an example. As well, there, we have several yes/no statements, but while the "mapframe=" parameter uses "yes" and "no", the shape/point/line parameters use "none" and/or "on"... Ideally users could put either (yes or on / no or none) to trigger the correct end result, or instead I think we should just standardize to yes/no only. I'm trying to think of other small things that have come up... ɱ(talk)15:26, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
The hyphens are matching what Module:Mapframe uses for multi-word parameter names, which I think came about from the hyphens needed for stroke-width etc when using <mapframe>...</mapframe> tags directly. But it should be relatively easy to allow either hyphens or underscores to be used. I agree that yes/no makes more sense than on/none for those parameters, not quite sure what I was thinking when I coded that. - Evad37[talk]02:41, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
Alright, cool. For sure I've already often typed the underscores into the infoboxes, not remembering they need to be hyphens for maplink-related parameters. ɱ(talk)03:06, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
Infobox mapframe
I suppose for {{infobox mapframe}}, I would recommend also making it work as {{infobox maplink}}, given that {{maplink}} works, and maybe a shortcut like {{IB map}}. As well, the latter template uses "type=(shape/point/line/data)", but here we use "(shape/point/line)=none"? Are these both needing to use different formats or can they be aligned? ɱ(talk)15:32, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
Template redirects are easy enough to create if desired (not sure how useful they'll be, if following the RFC most infoboxes are modified to use the module directly). I don't think the formats can be aligned, since Template:infobox mapframe is just for one feature, with binary on/off options for displaying as a point/line/shape, while Template:maplink allows an arbitrary number of features, each of which is of a specific type. - Evad37[talk]03:01, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
Alright, well still some users might prefer to code out their own, perhaps especially for features the direct way doesn't support (like would Genoa Park and its sister articles ever be possible that way?) I'm curious, why do the two templates behave differently in that way? Maplink still allows multiple features/feature types, like with the above example... ɱ(talk)03:11, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
Infobox mapframe is designed just to make it simpler to use for most articles, with maplink always available if a more customised map is desired. With infobox mapframe, since features are displayed automatically, there needs to be a way to turn them off, where is with maplink, if you don't want a feature displayed you simply do not include it in the parameters. - Evad37[talk]08:50, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
apology
probably should be at the app talk page - rater is opening in some qld articles and showing 'disambiguation page' and no ores setting - suspect a glitch perhaps ? odd - my recent edits it is disambig each time when I open... JarrahTree08:46, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
Currently the script detects disambiguation pages by matching the names of templates against a search pattern, so one of the templates being used must be generating a false positive. I think I really need to find a better detection method to prevent false positives (and perhaps also false negatives). - Evad37[talk]09:18, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
Trying to look at the issue - the place names could well have some relationship with disambig pages - as the set of place names are obviously multiple article names - such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windermere,_Queensland.
I think I have just had a short circuit on this one [13] is that a reducible by any means item, or is it a complexity of implying... or some puns or whatever? any explanation or answer is appreciated... JarrahTree14:04, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Sorry JarrahTree, I haven't yet coded that feature - been a bit busy with other things, and then took a short wikibreak. Still plan to do it, not sure when - Evad37[talk]03:08, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
@JarrahTree: Done. You'll need to wait for the cache to update (around a day or so), or you can open Rater, go the settings (cog-wheel at the top-left), then click the red "Reset cache" button. - Evad37[talk]09:56, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

So all the sudden recently, like for one week, this script has stopped highlighting; nothing relevant show up in the javascript console. I've cleared cache, different device (ChromeOS and Windows 10), different browser (Chrome and Opera), went into safe mode and copypasted the script into the JavaScript console. I think this script is now broken; you haven't changed it in nearly 600 days. Could you look into this before the MOS:DUPLINK virus takes over Wikipedia? Can I Log In (talk) 05:19, 28 August 2020 (UTC)
Hmmm, it works all the sudden, even the Jan 24, 2019 version. I swear to god I tested all troubleshooter. This revision definitely had duplicate links when it "broke" for me, so either I'm blind or some other technical issue. If it works, it works. :D Can I Log In (talk) 15:43, 28 August 2020 (UTC)
It's rewritting the html of the .mw-parser-output element so that each timestamps gets wrapped in a span. This causes event handlers to become detatched, so TsDiffs re-fires the "wikipage.content" hook (which fixed WP:NAVPOPs that was similarly broken). You can add on a function that runs each time the hook fires per mw:RL/CM#mw.hook - just be aware that various things can fire the hook, so you should check that the $content parameter (a jQuery object containing new/updated element) actually has something your script is interested in, ie use something like $content.find(yourSelector) and then do something to eachelement in that set, or check .length>0 for that set. Or if you can think of a way to efficiently wrap timestamps that doesn't remove event handlers, I would be intetested in that. - Evad37[talk]23:42, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
On the other hand, it causes User:BrandonXLF/QuickEdit to fire twice (the "quick edit" button shows up twice for each section -- both buttons being functional). Also TsDiffs is incompatible with Comments in Local Time gadget which wraps all timestamps in a span. Nice script, anyway, though I think the timestamp links would be better to have on-demand rather than in an always on state (maybe make that configurable?). — SD0001 (talk) 04:31, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
Scripts++ Newsletter – Issue 17
News and updates associated with user scripts from the past two months (July and August 2020).
Hello everyone and welcome to the 17th issue of the Wikipedia Scripts++ Newsletter:
@Andyrom75: It's sort of possible... assuming you know the Wikidata ids (Q-numbers), or can generate them with a SPARQL query, you can use {{mapframe}} to generate a map with those countries as shape or line features. The output will be the standard static map, with a button to open the full screen dynamic map. If you really want it to only be static, there may be a way to hide that button using TemplateStyles (but the dynamic map might still be accessible via double clicking, or tapping if on a mobile device. To get a truly static image, you would have to manually save the generated image and upload it as file (but then it wouldn't dynamically update if the OSM map changes). - Evad37[talk]00:50, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
What I'd like to do, is to create a template that will accept as input the name of the Countries, or the their relevant ISO codes to show the map. I've created Template:VisitedCountriesMap but unfortunately this time it doesn't work. Here a test. Any suggestion? --Andyrom75 (talk) 14:01, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
You might be able to use the mapframe tag directly without the template/module, but then you have to use the {{#tag:}} parser function rather than the tag itself, and the raw tag content has to be strictly correct (the module here cleans up control characters which tend to break the json parsing). - Evad37[talk]23:42, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
I understand the idea, but for some reason I'm not able to replicate the map I've inserted here as example, with the {{#tag:mapframe. Is it something that you can easily show me to see the right syntax? --Andyrom75 (talk) 07:52, 8 September 2020 (UTC)
Finally it works (unnecessary "hidden" newline in Country2wd template). Now I have the following challenge.
@Andyrom75: All mapframe maps are dynamic rather than static for Wikivoyages. Wikipedias and most other wikis have static thumbnails for performance reasons, but that might change at some point in the distant future. There isn't really much we can do about it (though usually the complaint is the lack of dynamic maps rather than static maps). - Evad37[talk]11:00, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
Got it. Actually I've seen that Kartographer can be configured server side to produce dynamic or static map, but I've thought it was just a default status that can be changed through a parameter.
As you said, normally we always use dynamic map, but since the template (currently) shows just the visited countries a static view is enough and clearly it's quicker to render.
Hey, After installation of User:Evad37/TimestampDiffs when I edit any page and a use preview button to review my edits, preview does not appear. I uninstalled the script and then tried the same and it works. So it looks like script somehow mess with preview of edits. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 10:03, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
The script by itself shouldn't be affecting whether preview appears (just the content within the parser output)... but there do seem to be a few other scripts that cause conflicts when both are used together. Or it could be a gadget, or perhaps even your preferences for preview (bottom of Special:Preferences § Editing). - Evad37[talk]01:20, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
Backup Signpost publication manager
Hi Evad, could you add me back to the Signpost publication script? I might be needed tomorrow to do the publication of the September issue. Thanks. ☆ Bri (talk) 15:14, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
I don't think this tool was envisaged for use with the VisualEditor, but it works very well—congratulations and thanks to the author on a very useful tool. It is more convenient to find and remove duplicate links this way; they are highlighted, click on them and click the "link" icon, much easier than a standard Wikipedia editor. There is an old comment at User talk:Evad37/duplinks-alt.js#Implementation for source editing mode to which I added on 18 September 20, but possibly that page is not monitored. The gist of my comment:
"Last year I described the usefulness of this script with the Visual Editor on the user page; it is much easier to remove duplicates this way than in edit mode. So, even if one uses the source editor for most purposes, it's worth using the visual editor for finding and fixing duplicate links.
There is one issue, either a quirk (if it can't be fixed) or a forwards compatibility issue (if it can)[added 28 Sep 20: it is a quirk, and can't be fixed, see response below]: when used with the visual editor, removing any link within a paragraph removes the highlight on all other duplicates within that paragraph. Not a major issue, either remember all the links in a paragraph, or repeat the highlighting, but if it is easily fixed, I'd suggest that it's worth it."
Thanks Pol098. The issue you describe is due to way VisualEditor works, whereby in the HTML it rewrites the whole paragraph (thus losing the changes the duplinks script makes) when you edit inside that paragraph. There isn't any easy way for the script to detect when this has occurred, unfortunately. - Evad37[talk]23:28, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
Hi. Over at WP:Articles for creation/Submitting, while selecting the WikiProject classification tags, I see that when the dropdown opens above the input field, some parts of the WP interface show up over the list of suggestions (screenshot). I noticed the same issue doesn't occur in rater which has a similar lookup menu.
@SD0001: Its the z-index, Vector (and maybe some of the other skins) uses values of up to 100. The solution is to use an overlay with a higher z-index, eg 110. An overlay is just a jQuery element you create and attach to the DOM, usually a $("<div>") appended to the body element. OOUI then uses that element to present content such as popups without being limited by the edges of dialogs and/or with the proper stacking order (z-index). Let me know if you need help with the coding, and I'll take a look when I am at a desktop computer. - Evad37[talk]10:20, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
Hi - you've been very helpful with my mapframe inquiries so far, thanks for your willingness and assistance. I have one new obstacle - similar to the Ohio Statehouse map template, I had created {{Scioto Mile map}}. I wanted it to replace individual maps at:
Though I had added a tenth shape to each one to show the boundaries. Is there a way to still do this using {{Scioto Mile map}}, perhaps as a parameter for a tenth entry? Or will I have to simply add all the boundaries into this general map? ɱ(talk)20:03, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
@Ɱ: You should be able to add just one shape that takes the value for |from10= and |title10= from parameters – or if all the maps on commons have the same names as the articles, you should be able to do |from10={{PAGENAME}}.map |title10={{PAGENAME}} - Evad37[talk]09:22, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
I suppose this actually has a problem - the main Scioto Mile article doesn't display the map on desktop or mobile, I think likely because there is no "from11=" to correspond to it like the others have. Should I create a dummy "Scioto Mile.map" Commons page that's devoid of markers, or is there a better way to solve this? ɱ(talk)02:02, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
Hi Evad37 - I know putting mapframe on all the templates here will be a large task to process, but would you be able to more, especially the three labeled "Needed"? I've been working with those templates for a long time, and there's a need for it now! ɱ(talk)13:13, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
I'll try to do some in the next couple of days (maybe tomorrow). The main thing that needs to be decided on an case-by-case basis is the placement (but if the infobox already has another type of map, the mapframe map can probably just be positioned straight after unless/until there's a local consensus for a different placement) - Evad37[talk]13:43, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, I strongly think we should just place mapframe maps where pushpin maps already have consensus to be. If anyone objects to that, I think pretty unlikely, then we could always have a discussion from there. ɱ(talk)13:55, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
Okay I think I added mapframe-custom by updating the infobox like you recently did to the monuments infobox. How would I add to {{Ohio Statehouse map}} to make each page's marker be normal size as opposed to small? ɱ(talk)02:09, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
You should be able to do something like marker-size4={{#ifeq:{{PAGENAME}}|These Are My Jewels|medium|small}} for each one - Evad37[talk]02:13, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
Nice, thank you! Should have tried this based on the marker color code I borrowed from the Central Park map... ɱ(talk)02:21, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
If I want to do this sort of marker scaling or coloring historic districts in a Commons data page, how can I do that? Trying to use Commons:Data:CRHP.map (transcluded at {{CRHP map}}) on article infoboxes to highlight historic districts and their boundaries. For whatever reason, I'm now finding just adding maplink transcluding the data page into articles works a lot better than using the template I created, but still not sure how to color for articles...) ɱ(talk)14:06, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
@Ɱ: If you're using data from commons, you can't change sizes, colours, etc directly. What you can do instead is either: (1) display additional features, which will be drawn on top of the map data from Commons, and could vary based on either PAGENAME or a parameter; (2) copy each feature into it's own .map file on commons, with color and size specified, and have use both the all-features map and the article-specific map; or (3) recreate the map data as a template on Wikipedia, specifying each feature in {{maplink}} parameters like at {{Ohio Statehouse map}}. Not too sure what's up with the sizing thing. - Evad37[talk]01:39, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
Huh, I would have assumed there would be a sort of {{#ifeq:{{PAGENAME}}|My Jewels|medium|small}} for Commons, and to specify enwiki. Well... I have been avoiding option 2 just because it's more work and many more data files than this current way. Option 1 would require a sort of colored marker above the original shape to indicate the historic district I suppose, because I wouldn't have an easy way to paste in all those coords anywhere to form a colored shape above the original shape from Commons. Option 3 could work but would also be probably by far the most work to accomplish, and would probably require the historic districts to be in their own data files anyhow? I suppose I'll go with creating some individual data files on the historic districts, and just leave this map for the main article. Thanks for fielding all my questions, you're the most knowledgeable and helpful person regarding mapframe that I've worked with. ɱ(talk)01:49, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
Hm, interesting - I've never done that. Would it be something like pasting the existing Commons data into Wikipedia:Map data/CRHP, and then adding, instead of like "stroke": "#ff0000",, it would be "stroke": {{#ifeq:{{PAGENAME}}|German Village|#666666|#ff0000}}", ? ɱ(talk)02:10, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
Also, does the maplink template even support Wikipedia data files? If not, would the raw <mapframe> be able to handle it? ɱ(talk)02:13, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
@Ɱ: It would just be the data part of the .map page on Commons, not the metadata stuff like licence, description, and source which commons requires (instead that goes inside <noinclude>...</noinclude> tags at the top of the page), but in essence yes. Probably also better to use name rather than the abbreviation for the subpage - no reason not to make it obvious what the data is for. The syntax for the template is {{maplink|raw={{Wikipedia:Map data/SUBPAGE}}}}, along with the regular parameters for frame etc. Using the plain <mapframe>...</mapframe> tag is tricky... you would have to use {{#tag:}} syntax so that the transclusion gets properly expanded, and you have to be careful with regards to line breaks and control characters which can break the strict JSON formatting that mapframe requires. - Evad37[talk]02:40, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
Wow, it takes a lot of trial and error for me to get it to work. Syntax errors are difficult enough to fix in Commons, but it's near-impossible to find stray brackets on Wikipedia. Do I need to remove any/all of the spacing from the Commons file? Looks like it still works... ɱ(talk)03:20, 4 October 2020 (UTC)
It seems the quotation marks need to go inside the #if, #ifeq, or #switch rather than the outside, e.g {{#if:{{{1|}}}|"#0034ff"|"#ff0000"}} instead of "{{#if:{{{1|}}}|#0034ff|#ff0000}}" - Evad37[talk]14:55, 5 October 2020 (UTC)
Hi Evad37, I noticed you added mapframe to Infobox shopping mall, would you be interested in doing the same for Infobox school? These maps look far better than the terrible looking pushpin maps. I'm going to start a discussion at some point on removing pushpins map altogether from the template and replace with mapframe. Please let me know, thanks Steven (Editor) (talk) 20:49, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
@Steven (Editor): Sure, I can add mapframe map capability. I am working my way through the list at WP:Mapframe maps in infoboxes, but will do requests also. Since that infobox is template-protected, I'll edit the sandbox later today or tomorrow, and leave a note on the talk page (just about adding mapframes, not removing anything). If there's no concerns raised, I can then make the edit to the live template a few days later. - Evad37[talk]22:21, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
Thank you and I see, I look forward to it. The other question I have is would it be possible to make it collapsible in the Infobox, so it’s basically hidden and to see the map, you would have to click on “Show map” or something like that? The reason I’m asking is because this Infobox has three images that can be displayed at the top before the current pushpin map and address – logo, seal and image; most articles will have one or two used, I’ve never come across one with all three. Anyway, when two are used and then you have the map, it makes the Infobox too long at the top. But if this is not possible that’s ok.
@Vice regent: Thanks. A private list isn't really possible without storing the data off-wiki, which would be more complicated than this script which is effectively just automating the editing of a user subpage. - Evad37[talk]02:26, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
Watchlists are a built-in feature of the MediaWiki software. There isn't any way to prevent anyone from seeing the content of a page on Wikipedia, protection only prevents editing. - Evad37[talk]03:16, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
So my proposed change would have to be made at MediaWiki? Is there a forum for suggesting changes to them? VRtalk17:06, 28 October 2020 (UTC)
@Vice regent: It doesn't necessarily need to be a built-in part of MediaWiki, just the storage of the list items needs to be offsite, with some authentication to ensure that the lists can only be accessed by their creators. It would be possible with a Toolforge tool using mw:OAuth authentication, but I don't currently have the time to take on such a project. You can try asking at WP:SCRIPTREQ, or at WP:VPT, or if you want to request a built-in MediaWiki version, then you could file a task request per mw:How to report a bug - Evad37[talk]10:20, 29 October 2020 (UTC)
Sysops will once again be able to view the deleted history of JS/CSS pages; this was restricted to interface administrators when that group was introduced.
Twinkle's block module now includes the ability to note the specific case when applying a discretionary sanctions block and/or template.
Hi Wikieditor1377. I don't currently have time to look thoroughly into your case, but I hope I can point you in the right direction. Firstly, if you are editing articles related to medicine and health, then the sourcing standards are particularly high, per WP:MEDRS. Secondly, sometimes the consensus doesn't agree with you, even if you're sure you are right (in whatever way) – if you find nobody else agreeing with you, sometimes you need to take a step back and leave it be. That said, if you have a dispute, then the way to resolve is through discussion, staying in the top few sections of this triangle.
For content disputes:
Normal collaborative editing does include reverts, which usually aren't personal – you make an edit, someone else who disagrees with it reverts, and then you bring it up for discussion on the talk page (WP:BRD). The edit, or a similar edit, can be reinstated if consensus can be reached on what should be added/edited in the article.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, you can bring the matter up for wider discussion on a wikiproject's talk page. These are usually listed in the banners at the top of the talk page, e.g. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Medicine. This allows editors interested in the general topic, but not watching the article you are editing, to get involved, which can help resolve disputes. Alternatively, or subsequently, Request for comment can similarly get a broader set of editors from across wikipedia to comment on particular content issues.
If you feel like regular discussions are not making progress due to a lack of structure, or that they would benefit from having a neutral person keep everyone on-topic and facilitate compromises, then you can try making a request at the Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard.
Thanks for the reply. I'll look into which would be the appropriate venue to deal with this issue on an effective way. I've used references from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Harvard, Oxford and others and they got reverted anyway just because they dislike the facts stated. The dispute has involved me and two other editors. My idea would be to leave both sides of the arguments on the page, and not only one which is how it stands currently on the page. Sorry to have bothered, I think I have sort of got a bit of it, but please dont bother, I think I need severe surgery on my watchlist - no one anywhere seems to say what the optimal size to not get the message of: too much. JarrahTree09:51, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
Voting for proposals in the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey, which determines what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year, will take place from 8 December through 21 December. In particular, there are sections regarding administrators and anti-harassment.
Enterprisey's parsoid-round-trip uses Parsoid to convert wikitext to HTML and back, and then shows the result and the difference between the original wikitext and the post-conversion wikitext.
Frietjes's infoboxgap assists in renumbering infobox labels/data/classes, so that a new line can be inserted in the middle of the infobox.
Twinkle has made a number of improvements, including using a change tag to identify actions made with it and automatically filing edit requests for protected XfD nominations.
GeneralNotability's spihelper updated to 2.2.10, fixing a number of small bugs, automatically tagging globally locked socks as such in the sockpuppet template, and restoring open cases following an SPI history merge.
Enterprisey's script-installer gadget has been updated with more internationalization of messages, as well as addition of a user preference, window.scriptInstallerInstallTarget to allow controlling where new scripts are to be installed.
My apologies for the delayed issue. As always, if anyone else would like to contribute, help is appreciated. Stay safe, --DannyS712 (talk) 18:20, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
Hey again, just saw that the Community Wishlist Survey is open again for nominations. Do you think any of my ideas on the running list of maplink problems should be added - is it within their scope? One particular thing I can think of is a new and expanded set of icons. I've alone spotted a great many ways it needs to be fixed! ɱ(talk)05:54, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
@Ɱ: Sure, go ahead - even if not selected by the Community Tech team, it lets other WMF teams and volunteer developers know that the community is still interested in mapframe maps. To get the best chance of being picked, the proposal(s) should try to be high-impact (so it gets votes from the community), but not to big or diverse or difficult (which isn't necessarily easy to judge, but these factors would make it more likely to be skipped over by the com.tech team). - Evad37[talk]00:17, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
@Evad37: - thanks, working on it here. Once live, I'll perhaps try to ask people to comment - could you raise it to other maplink folks, or at relevant project spaces? ɱ(talk)00:17, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
@Ɱ: Looks pretty good, should probably just make it about <mapframe> and <maplink> maps - that enwiki uses Template:Maplink to insert those is kind of beside the point - it can be mentioned, but really the icon improvements should not be dependent on which specific templates/modules are in use on any particular wiki - Evad37[talk]06:45, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
Do you think I should add to this CWS proposal the ability to have no icon? I know that is standard, but in infoboxes with a default icon, like {{infobox museum}}, I believe there is no way to go back to having no icon there. Can you look into this? Also, please let me know any ideas for spreading word about the proposal on mapping spaces! Best, ɱ(talk)00:30, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
No, that's something to be handled locally by templates/modules. The default for when using the <mapframe> tag directly is no icon, unless an icon is specified - Evad37[talk]23:29, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
Right, yeah. So using infobox museum, you think there is no way to display a map that doesn't have an icon (except perhaps when using "mapframe-custom"?) ɱ(talk)23:37, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
No, what should happen is for the module to recognise that something like |marker=none or |marker=_ or similar means that it shouldn't pass through any value for the icon - Evad37[talk]23:41, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
@Ɱ: Done, I ended up going with blank. That will work anywhere the Mapframe or Infobox mapframe modules or templates are used. - Evad37[talk]00:18, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
A suggestion for MoveToDraft
Hello Evad. Since there’s now a bot that tags drafts moved from mainspace, would it be possible to incorporate the template it applies into the script? Possibly, in the same edit as the AfC submission tag? This would be the {{Drafts moved from mainspace}} template if it helps. Thanks! Jalen Folf(talk)11:35, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
Hi again - I remember you worked on {{GeoGroup}} to add mapframe capability. One of the predominant uses is in NRHP listings, another interest of mine. Yet I don't think the mapframe ability works for these articles... Take a look at this NRHP list (also tested in other lists). Adding "|mapframe=yes|section=Current listings" displays Lua error: No named coordinates found in #Current listings., even though {{NRHP row}} I believe adds names to the coord templates created... Any ideas on how to fix this? ɱ(talk)17:20, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
So, I added a coord template to one of the entries, and now the map works. So clearly GeoGroup doesn't recognize the hidden coord templates that "NRHP row" creates. Is there a way to edit "NRHP row" to allow this to work? I suppose as a workaround I could always add coord templates throughout the list, but that's less than ideal... ɱ(talk)17:56, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
Alternatively, it would be great to edit "NRHP row" to allow a Wikidata link for each entry, and then could use {{wikidatacoord}} to make the {{GeoGroup}} map work (though wikidatacoord won't work for this yet apparently either). ɱ(talk)18:23, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, at the moment that feature works by looking at the wikitext of the page for {{Coord|....}} templates. I can probably get it to also look for the nrhp row and wikidata coord templates - Evad37[talk]23:32, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
Evidently some of the code is already baked in, because the template grabs from NRHP row already for its links, just not for the mapframe map. ɱ(talk)03:08, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
Here is too zoomed-out, not sure why. The preview mode doesn't do this, nor when you load full-screen. On another note, it will be a nice replacement to the less-professional existing map.
Here it displays properly, but I think the option for smaller markers, and other marker colors, like seen here would make it display even better.
Also, none of these preserve the article links, is there a way to do that? NRHP row even has parameters for the article name and display name.
Could there be the possibility of adding in coordinates/map data? I don't have any historic district data to potentially add to this, but I assume many NRHP listings will in the future, to show boundaries over just a center point. ɱ(talk)15:42, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
Fixed the zoomed-out problem - coords were only specific to like .1 or .15, but adding more precise coords fixed it. Not sure if you want an automatic fix though for future uses? ɱ(talk)16:02, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
@Ɱ: The zoomed-out behaviour: That's probably the wanted behaviour when the coord is for a large area like a whole city, state, or country - so should be fixed in individual articles when its a problem; Article links and display names are now used when specified; And its now in the live templates/modules. Individualising marker styles and additional map data is more tricky... - Evad37[talk]00:02, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. Agreed that the autozoom is usually a feature, not a bug. Perhaps the GeoGroup documentation should mention that if a user's map is too zoomed out, to add coord specificity in. Thanks for the changes. If it's any easier, you could set small markers as the default, which I think most multi-marker maps like this would benefit from. ɱ(talk)00:05, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
Another complex idea may be for nested maps - GeoGroup would be one of the clearest benefits of this that I can think of. You can see how the Columbus and Franklin County NRHP articles show a static map of the location within the state? I would be very happy to remove those relics and replace them with a map of Columbus or the county within Ohio/the Midwest, set within the GeoGroup mapframe map. ɱ(talk)00:13, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
Offshoot
One thing this really highlights is how terrible NRHP-supplied coordinates are - I fixed a number of them that have been made apparent in the Columbus map, but now looking at the NHL mapframe map for Ohio, it's awful. Sometime we should allow NRHP row to take Wikidata IDs for automatic coordinates, which are hardly ever problematic, especially to the degree these NRHP/NHL ones are. ɱ(talk)05:32, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
If you are able to add a wikidata id/wikidata coord option to the NRHP row parameter, it would be greatly appreciated. I just ran into a problem with unspecific coords given in the NRHP, and want to update all of the mapped-out coords, though it would be way better to add in Wikidata IDs (which have all been fixed already) to all items rather than randomly finding off points and readjusting them! ɱ(talk)01:46, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
New Page Patrol December Newsletter
Hello Evad37,
Year in review
It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.
John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.
NPP Technical Achievement Award
As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.
Six Month Queue Data: Today – 2262 Low – 2232 High – 10271

Scripts++ Newsletter – Issue 19
News and updates associated with user scripts from the past month (December 2020).
Hello everyone and welcome to the 19th issue of the Wikipedia Scripts++ Newsletter:
Enterprisey's copy-section-link adds popups to section headers which has an appropriate wikilink and external link to the section.
DannyS712's FindBlacklistEntry can be used to figure out which line(s) in either the local or global spamblacklist prevent a particular url from being added.
The Watchlist Expiry feature worked on by the Community Tech team has been enabled on Wikipedia. For scripts that include watching or unwatching pages, developers may want to update their code to take advantage of the new functionality. See the documentation on mediawiki.org.
As noted in the prior issue, Enterprisey's links-in-logs script has now been implemented as part of MediaWiki core. By my count, this is his third script that was replaced by implementing the code in MediaWiki core or an extension, along with link-section-edits and abusefilter-hide-search. Mostly, it's because new users either get directed to WP:AFC, and create drafts instead of articles, or else articles they do create are sent into draftspace if WP:NPPers don't think they are good enough to survive AFD - Evad37[talk]13:54, 20 December 2020 (UTC)
Meetup talk pages, this afternoon or sometime soon - will be adding talk pages to meetup items (pages), rather than one redirect for them all... sigh... All in the name of Stop_Making_Sense - an obscure and complex pun comes with that JarrahTree06:17, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
@JarrahTree: Why? The point of the redirects is so that discussions on meetups, particularly if there's rearranging or other changes, are all in one place, instead of sometimes being at the numbered subpages, other times being at the main Meetup/Perth, and sometimes being at both at the same time. - Evad37[talk]06:32, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
it might be fine for centralising discussion - but then as of in the last year or so with lots of them cancelled - and some poor archiving and things (almost all totally on my part) has left a complicated trail - each talk page will have a specific message that it is not a discussion page and have a link to the central item - it is more for a point of context for the full set of meetups having ways of keeping a track of cancelled events and other issues in context. I know it might not make sense to you or others, but there is also the linkage with the wmau web site -https://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Perth_meetup_68_(Fremantle_Passenger_Terminal) - and also the wiki club west record - which was (when it existed) tied in with other systems as well - it is as much for a tidy background, and should be adequately defended by the not a discussion page message as long as I dont get too many misunderstandings... that might try to waylay the idea... I think a stronger system of nowiki messages and bold messages will defend against any misunderstandings. I hope that explains the re-arrangement and the perspective on the issues.JarrahTree07:59, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
It looks like the explanation will be needed in other places other than editors talk pages, will try to work on it... sigh JarrahTree08:07, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
He does have a point, however... why does stuff from meetup #65 – 4 to 5 meetups ago – need to go on the main talk page? Or if it does, why not inside a {{Archive top}} or similar template (and with level 2 headings changed to level 3)? -
It was my bad mistake, the accidental placement of a totally out of whack item was a complete mistake - this is now conflating two things - (a) accidental editing on my part (b) proposal to have talk pages for the meetup pages and not centralising the pages - I clearly have no interest in continuing the range of messes on meetup pages that should be deleted or cleaned up - quite rightly. But hey, I have a concern to try to have a set of talk pages to be created, and move on from my bad edit. JarrahTree23:39, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
followup - thanks evad for the edit - I am unlikely to re-visit the meetup pages and what the issues are for a few days, your edit helps thanks. JarrahTree07:40, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

Is there anything about the process that you invoked there - anywhere or is it code that is restricted?
Its a new module I created Module:Page assessment. It automatically fetches the first |class= rating it finds on the specified article's talk page (or based on the type of page, e.g. redirects, disambigs, templates etc). Can be used pretty much anywhere. - Evad37[talk]08:01, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

By motion, standard discretionary sanctions have been temporarily authorizedfor all pages relating to the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes). The effectiveness of the discretionary sanctions can be evaluated on the request by any editor after March 1, 2021 (or sooner if for a good reason).

Hi Evad, can you add me as a publisher for the Signpost Publishing Script? Per this diff and off-wiki emails with Smallbones I will be publishing this month's issue. Thanks in advance, Eddie891TalkWork15:52, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, I've applied for the meta right. So if I'm understanding everything right, the script will walk me through the whole publication process— I don't need to take any further steps to deliver on-wiki? It will also send the global message, right? Cheers, Eddie891TalkWork02:23, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
@Eddie891: Yep, the script will do all the steps required for publication and delivery. The only things its doesn't do is announcing the new issue by emailing the mailing list, posting to social media, and cleaning up the newsroom/talk page (the first two require access to external accounts, I'm not sure who has that nowdays). You can try it out with the "dry run mode": it will simulate the process without making any edits/moves/actions, and then let you preview the main page and the mass message - Evad37[talk]02:51, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Hi. Would you mind adding a description of the changes in version 4 at Wikipedia:Scripts++/Next? Also, why have you decided to minify the code that is put onwiki? ResourceLoader already minifies it internally, and it makes it harder to understand changes without consulting the github page. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 12:50, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
@DannyS712: Done. When I was first working out how to build a script from a repo that could use multiple files and modern javascript, it was in the context of a userscript that would not be minified by ResourceLoader, so I guess it is a bit of holdover that isn't neccesarily required. Why I still do it is that (1) the browserified/babelified code is not really too clear to read anyway (perhaps more so for larger changes than smaller changes), (2) the non-minified version is quite a lot larger, currently 1,839 KB, which is a bit close to the technical limit, and (3) the generated source map doesn't work if the file start & end comments are concatenated onto it. I guess the source map could be excluded for the version published to the gadget, which would probably solve the second and third issues, but you still end up with browserified/babelified code. - Evad37[talk]00:27, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
Scripts++ Newsletter – Issue 20
News and updates associated with user scripts from the past month (January 2021).
Hello everyone and welcome to the 20th issue of the Wikipedia Scripts++ Newsletter:
User:Ahecht/Scripts/pageswap - version 1.4 fixes reading destination from form field if destination is not in article namespace, and fixes self redirects.
Wikipedia:XFDcloser - version 4 brings a new user interface for dialogs, some preferences for customising XFDcloser, major behind-the-scenes coding changes, and resolves various issues raised on the talkpage. Also, since version 3.16.6 non-admin soft delete closure have been allowed at TfD.

As a reminder, the legacy javascript globals (like accessing wgPageName without first assigning it a value or using mw.config.get('wgPageName') instead) are deprecated. If your user scripts make use of the globals, please update them to use mw.config instead. Some global interface editors or local interface administrators may edit your user script to make these changes if you don't. See phab:T72470 for more.
Miscellaneous
For people interested in creating user scripts or gadgets using TypeScript, a types-mediawiki package (GitHub, NPM) is now available that provides type definitions for the MediaWiki JS interface and the API.
A GitHub organization has been created for hosting codebases of gadgets. Users who maintain gadgets using GitHub may choose to move their repos to this organization, to ensure continued maintenance by others even if the original maintainer becomes inactive.
As always, if anyone else would like to contribute, including nominating a featured script, help is appreciated. Stay safe, and happy new year! --DannyS712 (talk) 01:17, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for being a part of and spearheading The Signpost in 2020 as Editor emeritus. Volume 16 is informative and a delight to go through! DTM (talk) 16:24, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
The code looks like an unintelligible mess. Is it possible for you to rebuild it so it is cleaner so other editors (like me) can learn? I have checked the repository and found it too difficult to sift through the code to see what does what.
Aasim (talk) 02:10, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
An unminified version of the code probably wouldn't be much easier to read as per § XFDcloser 4.0 above – the process of combining multiple files into a single file, and converting from modern ES6+ javascript to browser-compatible javascript, makes the built code hard to understand. What I could (and probably should) do is add some notes for developers in the repo. - Evad37[talk]06:42, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

I've been working on Module:Infobox road/route. It's intended to replace a good portion of the back end of {{Infobox road}} and use the road data string modules instead. I was hoping you could look it over and maybe copyedit it. I have some test cases at User:Fredddie/sandbox.
The only thing that's giving my trouble now is trying to call shieldmain when it exists instead of shield. The US infoboxes sometimes have a different route marker than {{Jct}} because of visibility at 20px. I can get it to call shieldmain but it kills the dual shield functions, which I want to keep. The shield generating code came from Jct. –Fredddie™09:16, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
@JarrahTree: the talkpage had a heading above the project tags, which was preventing Rater from seeing them. Removing the unnecessary heading fixed it. And yep, I've been busy as of late. - Evad37[talk]10:05, 27 February 2021 (UTC)
A request for comment is open that proposes a process for the community to revoke administrative permissions. This follows a 2019 RfC in favor of creating one such a policy.
A request for comment is in progress to remove F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a, which covers immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
A request for comment asks if sysops may place the General sanctions/Coronavirus disease 2019 editnotice template on pages in scope that do not have page-specific sanctions?
When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
By motion, the discretionary sanctions originally authorized under the GamerGate case are now authorized under a new Gender and sexuality case, with sanctions authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, any gender-related dispute or controversy and associated people. Sanctions issued under GamerGate are now considered Gender and sexuality sanctions.
Evad37, I love your Thanky gadget, it's very useful. Do you think you could develop a markasread-y gadget that would allow users to mark edits as read in their watchlist ?
Hi, due to quirks in the way that Wikipedia parses javascript pages, curly braces are parsed as templates, unless they are inside of <nowiki>...</nowiki>, <pre>...</pre>, <syntaxhighlight>...</syntaxhighlight> ... As a result of this, your script page, User:Evad37/XFDcloser/sandbox/core.js, is generating links in Special:WantedTemplates (in particular links to Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:"_+_name_+_"). Recently, an interface editor attempted to fix this by adding <nowiki> at the top and </nowiki> at the bottom of your script page. This didn't work because you already have <nowiki>...</nowiki> on that page. It would be great if you could add <syntaxhighlight>...</syntaxhighlight> tags (you don't have these) at the top and bottom of your page like this which will prevent your page from generating links in Special:WantedTemplates. Thanks for your help! Plastikspork―Œ(talk)14:27, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi Evad37! Have been making good use of Rater recently, as I've seen a lot of people have, and I had a functionality idea. Currently, it doesn't recognise {{Vital article}}, which is placed on Vital articles (unsurprisingly), and has a class parameter which should be updated inline with other class WikiProject banner changes. I suppose it's, by definition, only useful for editing 50,000 talk pages at most, but I think keeping the VA icons up-to-date would be of reasonably big importance to that project, so I was wondering if adding the functionality to adjust the template within Rater (but not group it in {{WPBS}}) would be a simple change to the tool. (Watching this page, so no need for talkback templates.) — Bilorv (talk) 00:47, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

@Firestar464: It was a mistake, sorry about that. I was pinged in Wikipedia talk:Wikipedia Signpost/Newsroom#MassMessage failure, and was trying to fix the apparent failure reported there. I looked at the mass message log and saw a failure message, but I guess I didn't check carefully enough because it was for a different mass messgae that failed. It's not so great on mobile... maybe I can improve that aspect somewhat before trying to move the whole thing, including various modules it depends on, over to Commons. - Evad37[talk]06:42, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
Nice. I don't think I'd ever actually looked at it with mobile view (avoided at all costs, typically), but yeah it's basically 4 of the images stacked in a single box. The demo works well, though. — Rhododendritestalk \\ 18:06, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

FoldArchives collapses archived talk page threads in order to reduce screen space
GoToTitle converts the page title into an input field for navigating to other pages
UserHighlighter adds highlighting to links to the userpages, talk pages, and contributions of administrators and other user groups as well as tooltips to indicate which groups a user is in
filterDiff: Adds a "Show changes" button to the filter editor.
filterNotes: Parses filter notes as wikitext (so links are clickable), and signs and dates new comments for you.
filterTest: Adds a "Test changes" button. Opens Special:AbuseFilter/test with what's currently in the edit form, not with what's saved in the database, so you don't have to copy-paste your changes.
Twinkle has a number of improvements, including that most watchlist defaults now make use of the new temporary watchlist feature. Other changes include rollbacks treating consecutive IPv6 editors in the same /64 range as the same user, adding a preview for shared IP tagging, a preference for watching users after CSD notification, and for sysops, the ability to block the /64 and link to a WP:RfPP request, and new copyright blocks default to indefinite.
Wikipedia:Shortdesc helper now v3.4.17, changes include minor fixes and preventing edits that don't change the description.
Joeytje50's JWB now version 4.1.0, includes the ability to generate page lists from the search tool, major updates to the handling of regular expressions, the storing of user settings, the addition of upload protection, and an option to skip pages that belong to a specific category, among other changes. See User:Joeytje50/JWB/Changelog for a full list of recent changes.

Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

User Steelkamp and GDerrin have reported this to me - is it me, my browser, or is it something I dont understand that I need to fix somehow... JarrahTree08:56, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
@JarrahTree: I'm not sure exactly, but I don't think the problem is on your end. IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Hi, hope you are doing well! I have a bug to report on the overlay functionality you developed for mapframe. As seen here, the overlay border doesn't quite match up with the map border. Thanks, that worked. I was also glad to see some ability to change color and width of the overlay borders - that still needs to be added into the documentation however. good suggestion - the acoustics inside are atrocious, but depending on the weather, it might be fine. As there is an element of the 20th birthday of wikipedia lingering in the air, there might be an effort to find a slightly different venue, but considering the turn around time for anything - it is the luck of the draw... As I have said, I will be in town checking things out in the next day or so - as some businesses in the perth metro area are shutting up shop with no notice and very sudden (example a coffee haunt in leederville literally gone in the last week or so) - will keep you and the others posted. Good evening! I had seen your edits in Template:Infobox settlement, so, in this message, I ask you for problems I encountered in that template.
During my edits in the mentioned article, I gave some information together with various sources I add with <ref>{{cite web}}</ref> citation that I mentioned in this section. However, instead of showing the info, I found that the info weren't showing after I hit publish changes. So, my question, will you keen to find out what kind of mistakes I committed in the article?
Hi Azmi1995, I had a quick look and I'm not really sure what you mean – can you be more specific? (a diff link might help.) But anyway, I'm not actually that familiar with Infobox settlement specifically – you might get a better response posting to the infobox talk page, where your query will be seen by editors who regularly use and maintain that infobox. Hey, I am wondering if this is a job that I could do with "Rater". I need to find all instances (ideally, within the Category:Idaho); where the talk page is marked with the US Banner...BUT also with (ID=Yes|Idaho=yes), and ADD the new WP:Idaho banner. General concept is we are splitting off from the Parent US Project, back into our State-based Idaho project. For now, we are NOT pulling the ID parameters.
Part Deux: Copy current CLASS=* to the ID banner class={}
Part C: IF there is "ID-importance=x", then great! Pull x and put into the new banner importance. if no "id-imp*" (OR if value is blank); then try to pull "importance=y"

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.
Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.
At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.
There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.
Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Integrating archiving script with section subscriptions
Hi Evad37! One thing you may wish to keep an eye on is the upcoming deployment of WP:Discussion Tools, which includes a feature for subscribing to sections. It appears in the same place as the OneClickArchiver button, which causes some funky formatting. It'd be neat to see it integrated visually, and you might even want to see if the team wants to build it into the software for everyone. I love using this script; thanks for your work maintaining it! Cheers, {{u|Sdkb}}talk21:52, 22 October 2021 (UTC)
Hello Evad37, as you have been inactive in interface administrator areas, your IAdmin flag has been removed according to the policy. This has no impact on your base administrator access. Should you require this access again in the future, you may request it at WP:BN. Best regards, — xaosfluxTalk00:20, 29 October 2021 (UTC)
Phase 2 of the 2021 RfA review has commenced which will discuss potential solutions to address the 8 issues found in Phase 1. Proposed solutions that achieve consensus will be implemented and you may propose solutions till 07 November 2021.
Hi Evad37, I am trying to implement the Template:If mobile functionality in Greek Wikipedia and it does not seem to work. Is there something more than Template:If mobile and Template:If mobile/styles.css pages needed? Regards, ManosHackertalk11:41, 16 November 2021 (UTC)
Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021.
Unregistered editors using the mobile website are now able to receive notices to indicate they have talk page messages. The notice looks similar to what is already present on desktop, and will be displayed on when viewing any page except mainspace and when editing any page. (T284642)
The limit on the number of emails a user can send per day has been made global instead of per-wiki to help prevent abuse. (T293866)
The already authorized standard discretionary sanctions for all pages relating to the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes), broadly construed, have been made permanent.
A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
KMLtoJson script not working
Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but the KML-to-Json script doesn't appear to be showing up in my options as intended regardless of what browser I try. ToThAc (talk) 16:11, 8 December 2021 (UTC)
Hello everyone, and welcome to the 22nd issue of the Wikipedia Scripts++ Newsletter. This issue will be covering new and updated user scripts from the past seven months (June through December 2021).
Got anything good? Tell us about your new, improved, old, or messed-up script here!
Featured script
LuckyRename, by Alexis Jazz, is this month's featured script. LuckyRename makes requesting file moves easier, and automates the many steps in file moving (including automatic replacement of existing usage). Give it a shot!
Updated scripts
SD0001: hide-reverted-edits has been updated to take into account changes in reversion tools like Twinkle and RedWarn.
ClaudineChionh: SkinSwitcher (a fork and update of Eizen's script) provides an options menu/toolbox/toolbar allowing users to view a given page in MediaWiki's default skins.
Wikipedia:User scripts/Ranking is a sortable table of Wikipedia's thousand-or-so most commonly used scripts; it includes their author, last modification date, installation count, and sometimes a short description.
Toolhub is a community managed catalog of software tools used in the Wikimedia movement. Technical volunteers can use Toolhub to document the tools that they create or maintain. All Wikimedians can use Toolhub to search for tools to help with their workflows and to create lists of useful tools to share with others.
draft-sorter sorts AfC drafts by adding WikiProject banners to their talk pages. It supersedes User:Enterprisey/draft-sorter, adding a few features and fixing some bugs.
BooksToSfn adds a portlet link in Visual Editor's source mode editing, in main namespace articles or in the user's Sandbox. When clicked, it converts one {{cite book}} inside a <ref>...</ref> tag block into an {{Sfn}}.
diffedit enables editing directly from viewing a diff "when, for instance, you notice a tiny mistake deep into an article, and don't want to edit the entire article and re-find that one line to fix that tiny mistake".
warnOnLargeFile warns you if you're about to open a very large file (width/height >10,000px or file size >100 MB) from a file page.
QuickDiff (by OneTwoThreeFall at Fandom) lets you quickly view any diff link on a wiki, whether on Recent Changes, contribs pages, history pages, the diff view itself, or elsewhere. For more information, view its page on Fandom.
talkback creates links after user talk page links like this: |C|TB (with the first linking to the user's contributions, and the latter giving the option of sending a {{talkback}} notice). It also adds a [copy] link next to section headers.
diff-link shows "copy" links on history and contributions pages that copy an internal link to the diff (e.g., Special:Diff/1026402230) to your clipboard when clicked.
auto-watchlist-expiry automatically watchlists every page you edit for a user-definable duration (you can still pick a different time using the dropdown, though).
generate pings generates the wikitext needed to ping all members of a category, up to 50 editors (the limit defined by MediaWiki).
share ExpandTemplates url allows for easy sharing of your inputs to Special:ExpandTemplates. It adds a button that, when clicked, copies a shareable URL to your exact invocation of the page, like this. Other editors do not need to have this script installed in order to access the URL generated.
show tag names shows the real names of tags next to their display names in places such as page revision histories or the watchlist.
ColourContrib color-codes the user contributions page so that pages you've edited last are sharply distinguished from pages where another editor was the last to edit the page.
All in all, some very neat scripts were written in these last few months. Hoping to see many more in the next issue -- drop us a line on the talk page if you've been writing (or seeing) anything cool and good. Filling in for DannyS712, this has been jp×g. Take care, and merry Christmas! jp×g07:30, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
