Speedy deletion nomination of M.C. Gill Corporation

Joseph Pallache

I wanted to ask you why you changed Joseph Pallache's birth date from 1570 to 1580 in this edit? Debresser (talk) 20:42, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I was drawing it to be consistent throughout; it appeared that both were used in the original draft of the page and there were still both in the edit prior to mine. After further review, I see "c. 1570" is perhaps more proper given reference 4 uses that year. I could see no reference to birth year in any of the other 3 references in that section. I too saw no birth year in any of the other sources. The Dutch cemetery lists the year of death as 1639/1649. The first of the sources mentions neither, and I am at a loss as to why it was added at all. Debresser (talk) 20:00, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Did you see the 1570 reference here? I don't know the language, so perhaps I am missing important context with the 1570 under Pallache, Jozef. Excellent! Given that, I would suggest "circa 1570", which I believe is the current standard when it's around a specific year and I would make the death year category as 1570s births. Any thoughts on how to make the death year more uniform? Why did you use the 1570s birth category and not the 1570 births category? Is such common practice if the year is not precisely know? Seems strange, because it is more likely to be 1569 (1 year before) than 1574 or 1575 etc, which are 4-5 years removed. Debresser (talk) 18:29, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My perusal of other Category:1570s births shows a similar assumption of around 1570 would be a case where Category:1570s births is used over Category:1570 births. Examples: Thomas Barclay (scholar) and Sir Edmund Bacon, 2nd Baronet, of Redgrave. I would agree that this approach is definitely 50% one way and 50% the other way; such is the problem of thinking of things in a decade by decade paradigm, I guess.--Engineerchange (talk) 18:37, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Automotive Hall of Fame Navboxes

Hello, Engineerchange, I wanted to talk about your Automotive Hall of Fame navboxes. Since my nomination didn't result in delete, I wanted to talk straight with you before I do another nomination. @WikiCleanerMan: I think I do have a pending question or two, if you don't mind a quick dialogue. As far as I've seen this navbox approach only exists for a single Hall of Fame: the Rock and Roll HOF. A quick Google search shows this to be true. I understand no HOF's ceremonies/events are as much of a spectacle as the Rock and Roll HOF, but I do think your argument for notability read a bit vague to me. I am not as well read on template notability, but, jumping from a page's notability (which I think Automotive Hall of Fame has) to template notability reads a bit unclear to me - specifically for the idea of "awards" which in many cases are only well known in an industry-by-industry context. Engineer, there is a guideline here at Wikipedia:Template namespace. Under the Guidelines section, the sixth bullet point it states, "Templates should not be used to create lists of links to other articles when a category, list page, or "See also" section list can perform the same function." @WikiCleanerMan: But couldn't that same argument be made about List of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees and Template:Rock and Roll Hall of Fame navbox? You are also arguing that Draft:List of Automotive Hall of Fame inductees shouldn't be a page also? I've definitely seen cases where a sample of people are listed on a page like Automotive Hall of Fame and then the inductees section links to the full list on a separate page. Would that be a more viable approach than the template as it stands? I am merely asking for advice since the deletion of the navbox templates does, unfortunately, erase countless hours of work that not a single person commented against in the first 6 months of adding that navbox template to countless pages of automotive industry inductees/honorees. That's where the notability issues come. On what level is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame notable as the Automotive Hall of Fame? I don't see it. And the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has, I think, hundreds of inductees. And those templates exist for ease of navigation. And quite a number of this hall of fame inductees don't have a page as of yet. And most of the navboxes you've created are filled with mostly text or red links. It counters the navigation purpose. Your draft at its current standing and when you do submit it for review, it would most likely be rejected and will probably be redirected to the mainspace because it contains the same information that's already listed under a section on another article. But an alternative idea could be since in my view your templates don't meet the notability guidelines, it could be moved to your user space by making it a subpage under your user name since this is still a work in progress. @WikiCleanerMan: Yeah, my confusion still lies in where the barrier for a hall of fame notability is – in almost every obituary for these individuals, these awards and induction classes are referenced. I do very much understand it is not nearly as notable as the Rock and Roll HoF, but the gray area from where it stands to where it would be notable is still mirky to me. I do concede the point and agree to move the templates to my user space, however. Perhaps also the Draft:List of Automotive Hall of Fame inductees, if you believe the number of redlinks would make this article redundant with the page itself. Can you assist with that? I imagine you know of a bot to help with this process. Marling J Ankeny

Thanks for putting something together on him, I am one of his great grandsons. I never got to meet him, but he’s pretty important part of my family history. I still own a home that is next to the home he bought in Lusby, a few of his mementos of his mining career, and the M1 Carbine he carried in WWII.

That’s one of the topics on him I’d like to find out more about, but I’m not sure how to do it. He went into the Navy at age 42, which is a bit odd, so I’m guessing he wasn’t just a fighting force. I’ve found memos in paperwork that he had that I think references planning for D-Day, but I’m not sure how to read it. I’ve also found maps that he created that document sunken ships in France.

If you have any suggestions on how I can find out more about what he did, it would be appreciated. I have looked into requesting his records from the Navy, I’m just not sure there would be anything useful, that it didn’t get destroyed in the Navy records fire, and if they would release it to me since I’m not in the allowable next of kin. @Jdugan4859: Thank you for the kind note! I'm no expert on military records, but the National Archives would probably be your best bet. That information tends to be buried deep in documents. A research librarian would know more, but my best guess is to look into where he was and when, and that should help glean deeper information about what documents could help you learn more about his activities in the war. A good place to start is just to e-mail a research librarian and get the process started. As an aside, I did a search on the Internet Archive and it seems to all pertain to his role in the Bureau of Mines. As an additional aside, I could not find any photos outside of copyright (i.e., published before 1927) of him, so if you want to share some of your family photos, Commons (Wikimedia) would be one of the best places to upload. Also, since you are potentially new to Wikipedia, please note WP:COISELF, you should not edit the article, but you are welcome to post suggestions on the talk page. One of the main reasons I’d like to find out more about his Navy career, is due to him ending up near Solomons Island, MD, his house to the island is about 10 miles. The island was used for training amphibious invasion forces during WW2, so I’m gonna guess that’s how he found the area.

Evidently he use to say that “God could have made a more beautiful place, but he didn’t”. He loved the area, and I don’t blame him, I’m great full to be able to still enjoy the property he bought in Lusby.
