I added the extra information on Caroline Charles because, as the article stood, she was born in Cairo and in the nest sentence, went locally to Swindon Art School, which did not quite add up! Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:33, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. I probably intended to come back to the article, but there's so much other new content to be created - it's so easy to get distracted. Edwardx (talk) 08:44, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
I see that you'll be there. :) It's nice to know that there'll be someone there who I've met before (although I don't know if we'll recognize each other since we were just in the same room at the feminist film Wikithon). Shiningroad (talk) 03:25, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
Hi, as a nudge, it's been a few days but I am still awaiting your latest reply on the nom page. Do you still have time to participate at the nom? If not, I could seek another reviewer... --Elonka19:10, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
No, plenty of sitting down. I'll be hosting Auditorium 2 on Sunday - if you want to heckle me, I'll try to come up with a good put down. Are you coming along? Edwardx (talk) 22:52, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
I shall be there on all three days. And running an editathon at the Zoo on Tuesday afternoon (1000 monkeys on typewriters - that's what happens when you pay editors peanuts). Edwardx (talk) 23:03, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Our whole system is based on the monkeys on typewriters system isn't it? Just make sure none of them takes a selfie. We are already being sued for the last one. I am going to try to photograph some of these London streets on one of the days with my toy camera. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:14, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
On Tuesday, after visiting WMUK, I photographed Whitecross and Fann, Some Golden Lane, bit of Goswell and Aldresgate, Charterhouse Sq, CHarterhouse St, Long Lane, Middle St, Cloth Fair, St John's St, St John Lane, some Cowcross. And Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. Just have to find time to upload them. Edwardx (talk) 23:39, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
Hopped out at Ganton St on the way home and tried to shoot a video, but the result was rubbish - hand-held walking along, just made me dizzy looking at it. Edwardx (talk) 23:44, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
I did a lot of streaming video encoding 15 years ago, but very little experience of shooting it. Much more to it than just still images, that's for sure. Edwardx (talk) 00:01, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
We have almost none (compared to still) because of the need for it to be in a free codec. Mp4 etc isn't free and neither are most of the codecs in use. ogg is but you have to convert to it using various doubtful programs available on home-made looking websites. There was an RFC about this problem a while ago. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:06, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
Good to bump into you both. FYI, I've started a topical DYK and would appreciate help in getting it processed while the light show is still happening. Andrew (talk) 16:46, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
Indeed - it's worth visiting the site at night for that Close Encounters experience. It's a short walk from Westminster tube and you can't miss it. Note that that the DYK is up right now - thanks for helping get this done. Andrew (talk) 07:14, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
Sarah Pucill has been nominated for Did You Know
Hello, Edwardx. Sarah Pucill, an article you either created or significantly contributed to, has been nominated for Did you know consideration to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page. You can see the hook and the discussion here. You are welcome to participate! Thank you. APersonBot (talk) 22:25, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Edwardx, the nominator has responded to your most recent review post; can you please take a look and respond back? Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:35, 12 August 2014 (UTC)
DYK for Lis Rhodes
On 13 August 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Lis Rhodes, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Lis Rhodes's 1975 work Light Music was called "an iconic work of expanded cinema" by the Tate Modern? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Lis Rhodes. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
It was swell chillaxing with you et PhlliaF last week! I acquired my library card to-day, and have just woke up from a deep reverie caused by close readings of the 19th-century Financial Times. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 22:17, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Yes good to catch up with you again Gareth. (I suspect Edward is having a short wiki-break, which would be entirely understandable) Westminster library? Philafrenzy (talk) 22:55, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
I have just acquired this, final edition 1986, similar to the film guides and a RS in an area that is a morass of unreliable sources. British and U.S. TV. Let me know if I can look anything up for you. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:00, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
It seems authoritative. Reading between the lines, he was unhappy with earlier editions and did this final expanded one to get it up to the right standard. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:48, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
That was the plan for Tuesday's London Zoo editathon (Wikimania fringe), but the monkeys were too busy taking selfies. Edwardx (talk) 10:36, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
A fine upstanding citizen never known to have used or supplied drugs, unless you count the rum ration. Naval bit should be easily expandable. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:24, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
Thank you, there's more to do but I must try to finish the sensational life of Betty May too. What was she doing during the war? I would not be at all surprised to find that she was with SOE or something like that. I know who owned the rabbit but thought it better not to include the name. It was not Litvinoff. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:32, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
She is now, and another good hook idea. Thought I had added her, but apparently not. Was the rabbit Chas and/or Dave? Edwardx (talk) 22:45, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
I don't believe it was a talking rabbit, though it evidently thought it could fly. Perhaps it was trying to avoid arrest for drugs by Norman Pilcher. It was owned by a minor figure that might make an interesting article if I could scrape enough facts together to do it, but who may not be dead. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:51, 17 August 2014 (UTC)
I've created articles for most of the listed and National Inventory pubs in London, so I'm branching out courtesy of [this purchase] at this year's Great British Beer Festival. Having said, that I do have fond memories of a walking (and drinking) holiday in the Peak District some years back. Edwardx (talk) 11:05, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
DYK for Alice Pollock
On 20 August 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Alice Pollock, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Alice Pollock founded the boutique Quorum and the male modelling agency English Boy, both in London? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Alice Pollock. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
There are still an awful lot of pubs in the UK. No pub I've created an article for has subsequently closed. Maybe I can halt the tide of pub closures single-handed? Edwardx (talk) 00:11, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks so much Edwardx – great to see these nominations and they are much appreciated. By the way, I think I've found another excellent source for Peter Russell, this one a contemporaneous account...seems even at the time he carried an air of dark mystery and wouldn't tell reporters where he was from, other than to hint darkly about bloodline from Norfolk and Huguenot on mother's side (I do so hope he finished off that reveal with a 'dontcha know' or a 'what'). Plan to incorporate the source into the article – he sounds more 'characterful' with every line I read. They don't make 'em like that anymore! Libby norman (talk) 00:00, 22 August 2014 (UTC)
It was a "Did You Know" nomination from someone else that inspired me to contribute more new articles, so it seems like a good way of encouraging and rewarding the contributions of others. And you're producing quality work that really should get a wider audience. I look forward to reading more about Peter Russell. Edwardx (talk) 08:54, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

After August 26, you will have a central JavaScript and CSS page. They will be on Meta-Wiki and will work on all wikis. Read more on the help page. [6]
Have you noticed family members contributing to bios of the recently deceased? Dieter Bortfeldt and Anne Hollander. I think there was another too. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:47, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I had noticed that (well, there are 2300 pages in my watchlist), and it is broadly a good thing. I think we try to honour the dead and avoid too much dirt, or hagiography. Hope that they appreciate our hard work. On the other hand I've been a bit hard on One Commercial Street, but it is only a building. Edwardx (talk) 00:06, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
No rush - some of those noms are a few days late (my fault, as I calculated 10 days not 7), so it might not make it through anyway. Edwardx (talk) 00:20, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jill Kennington until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.
Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Wgolf (talk) 21:55, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
Found a bit courtesy of Westminster Library. Really needs an electronic archive of Vogue and Tatler, which I do not have. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:59, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
You could photograph them too. Any have poor doors? We could do with a good montage like in the Evening Standard article. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:13, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
Is another eccentric. There is much more to add. None of your own articles appear on the list? I am more than happy to work on them. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:17, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. As it is now Wiki Loves Monuments month, I shall be doing mostly buildings for a while, but there's bound to be the odd diversion or several... Edwardx (talk) 23:26, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
Undoubtedly. Endell Street Military Hospital could be a good hook for Endell Street. I have some Betty May related content to add too. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:42, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
I doubt there was anyone in those circles she didn't know. What will you do if you ever run out of pubs? You could move to Dublin I suppose. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:49, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
And now the Red Lion, Whitehall - you've got me started again. After pubs, there are plenty of listed churches needing articles, then more streets, houses, etc. The London Tourist Board should employ us. Edwardx (talk) 23:53, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
I will skip the churches, I would feel hypocritical, but the rest, as you indicate, is wide open. Endell Street is about to get interesting. It was the home to many seedy clubs. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:56, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of The Reno, Manchester
Hello Edwardx,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged The Reno, Manchester for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
There was already an photo of the Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge - it is on the main Chingford page as a thumbnail.
Peter
Hello Peter. I had to visit Chingford yesterday, and as September is Wiki Loves Monuments month, I photographed several listed buildings. I'm now creating articles for those without, including Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge. Generally, I think it's best to use up-to-date photos, so that our readers can see things as they now look. Of course, if there's space, it is a good idea to include several photos, perhaps including how they looked in the past. You are of course most welcome to contribute to any of the new Chingford articles that I'm starting. Edwardx (talk) 11:27, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
Added to the list. I do like the coded euphemisms, and "All night gaiety" is a short, pithy quote. Clearly, a relatively early use of today's near-standard use of gay for being homosexual. Indeed, the history section of gay confirms this. Interesting to contrast with the "old" usage of gay in the 1934 film The Gay Divorcee, a title I've always found amusing. It could be interesting for our readers to learn that the alternative (now mainstream) usage of gay has been around a long time. Edwardx (talk) 11:39, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
There's also "Dancing to Charlie" but I don't know what that means! It's ironic that if the club had not been closed down by the police we wouldn't have the material to write a proper article. All credit to somebody who saw fit to keep the details for the National Archives. There must have been many clubs of all kinds that were just as noteworthy but simply passed away without much record. I will finish it off later.
Incidentally, be wary of Gangland Soho as a source, almost everything in it is scraped from better sources elsewhere. I commend to you UK Press Online via Westminster Libraries which contains the original press reports of cases. They often contradict later secondary sources and did so both with this article and the court cases of Betty May. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:43, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
He would have been 31 so old enough but as you indicate probably not rich enough. I will look into it, Peaches got married there. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:04, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Think he was rich enough. And NYT article says that they Bob and Chris were friends, so I think we can confidently say that he sold it to him. I will be bold. Edwardx (talk) 11:10, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
Like Jagger, Geldof was not from money so he could buy the house, and the contents too? Giving instant social status? (just speculating) Philafrenzy (talk) 11:18, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
"Issues" doesn't begin to cover it! You can see it starting early with the head down or turned away then faceless by the end. I couldn't even guess what was behind it. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:46, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
I've seen for some time that you are one of the very few good editors working with articles on organizations and their executives. I screen a great many incoming drafts in this area, and I try to detect and remove all undeclared paid editing. I sometimes come across those that seem so important that they might be worth rescuing. I don't have enough time for the mall, and I try to concentrate on those most familiar to me, educational institutions and their faculty and companies in the field of biomedicine. . I'd like to refer a few others to you; I'll mention just a few from time to time here if it's OK with you.. or ping you. DGG ( talk ) 18:57, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
DGG, thank you for your kind words. With Wikipedia's success and ubiquity, paid editing is booming, and we (volunteers) are struggling to cope with it. I'd rather be creating new content, but over the years, more and more of my editing time is spent on dealing with paid/COI editing. I would be happy to help where I can. I don't have a particular business sector, but prefer stuff where there are English language sources, or at least where I have some feel for the reliability (or otherwise) of the sources. I try to avoid stuff from countries such as India and Nigeria - Sisyphean tasks have limited appeal. I am interested in very rich people (especially billionaires), and in companies/organizations that receive relatively little coverage compared to their significance. Edwardx (talk) 11:26, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
