Clarification of Categories vs Main Articles

Dogru, here are some information pages that I implore you to read:

  • Wikipedia:Categorisation FAQ - This explains "What are categories?," "What is the purpose of categories?," and "How do I categorize categories which have a main article?"
  • Wikipedia:Categorization - guidelines on how categories are used, and when they should be used


I have gone ahead and instated my suggested edits to the Lounge music article. Please read this entire comment and ask questions, either to me or to other Wikipedia editors, before reverting the changes. I appreciate your persistence in this matter, and your willingness to see this through. After all, being bold is a big part of Wikipedia. However, it is critical that you read about categories and understand how they work. What is claimed to be a Wikipedia error is not an error at all - Wikipedia is functioning exactly as it has been designed.

I will begin by saying that I have not "questioned the propriety of including Capitol Records as a category." My comments thus far have been purely technical in nature. If you believe that Capitol Records is a worthwhile category (I am not arguing to the contrary), then feel free to create the category. As it stands right now, such a category (category, not article) does not exist. I realize that you do not believe that this is the case, so I will try to explain in greater detail.


Here is how Wikipedia is set up:

  • A main article page and a category page are two independent things.
    • When an article page is created, a category page is not automatically created - it must be created separately.
    • A Capitol Records article page does indeed exist. A Capitol Records category page does not exist.
    • When a page on Wikipedia has "Category:" in front of its name (e.g. Category: Capitol Records) it is unrelated to the article which is not marked in such a way.
    • A Category page is dedicated to collecting a list of articles that fit under that particular category, not an article page which collects information about that particular subject.
  • When searching for pages through the "long box on the left side of the screen", Wikipedia searches article pages, NOT category pages. Category pages must either be accessed via the list of categories or by typing them in manually into your web browser's address bar.
  • Merely linking to such a category does not cause it to exist.
    • In order for the category to exist you need to click on the red link and then write a summary of the category.
    • You then need to place the category link on other relevant pages.


To make this more clear, search for the article "Pop music." Once you have reached this article, in the address bar of your browser you will see the title ".../wiki/Pop_music." Now, return to the "lounge music" article and click on the "Pop music" category link at the bottom of the page. The address is shown as ".../wiki/Category:Pop_music," an entirely different page. I can understand that this system of filing can be very confusing, especially since categories often (but not always) have the same name as an article. However, article pages and category pages are intentionally kept separate. It is how Wikipedia was designed, and it can be used in no other way.


In the case of "Capitol Records" an article exists, but not a category. In other cases, a category will exist, but not an article. Here is an example:

  • Type "German loanwords" into the search box on the left side of the page. It comes up with nothing, because an article by that title does not exist.
  • Now, navigate to "Category:German_loanwords" by typing it in to your browser's address bar. To make this easier, here is a link: Category:German loanwords
  • This shows how Category pages do not show up in a normal search, but article pages do. It also shows how the existence of one does not necessitate the existence of the other.
  • You will also notice how the category of "German loanwords" is merely a list of links to articles that are "German loanwords." If a "German loanwords" article existed, it would contain information about German loanwords. This is the largest difference between category pages and article pages.


Again, I appreciate your persistence, but please try to understand that article pages and category pages exist independently and have very different functions. Don't let this discourage you though - many of Wikipedia's inner-workings can seem confusing, but it's worth the time to learn.

Page moves

When you create a "new" article with the same content (i.e. cut and paste), as you did with Jean Baptiste Loeillet de gant to Jean-Baptiste Loeillet de Ghent, it becomes very confusing, because then there are essentially two articles, which are no longer connected. They might grow in very different ways, which we want to avoid, and they also "break" the history, meaning that other people who have contributed to the article will no longer get credit on the de Ghent page. In the future please use the "move" tab at the top of the page. For more informaion, please see Wikipedia:How to rename (move) a page.

Now, the actual issue, what the name of the pages should be. I'm not sure about that. Both don't seem quite right. The capitalization of "de gant" is clearly wrong. Usually we differentiate between people of the exact same name by using their profession, i.e. "John Smith (cooper)" "John Smith (blacksmith)", but obviously in this case that's not possible. Grove has "Jean Baptiste Loeillet (ii) [‘Loeillet de Gant’]", and both the titles so far are a somewhat random admixture of these. I think I'll move the original article to Jean Baptiste Loeillet of Ghent, and make some redirects, and do the same thing with his cousin's article. Thanks for your work. I was trying to replace Limited english proficiency with Limited English Proficiency. The former is incorrect: English must be capitalized and Proficiency must be capitalized as this conforms with the education and government established capitalization of the phrase.
A wikipedia suggested I insert the phrase you saw posted. Could you please help with eliminating this typo of a redirect? Thank you. Dogru144 18:01, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
I don't know why they gave that advice. I created a redirect (check that link for more info on redirects) at Limited English Proficiency. Please don't troll, "relatable" IS a word

Re: your angry deletion, "relateable ain't a word!"

"Relatable" is very much a word, and a basic one at that:

Furthermore, "relatable" is weaker than "related". Relatable means "that which can or could be related to", as opposed to "that which is indeed or directely related to". For instance, Hitler isn't related to Napoleon, but Hitler is relatable to Napoleon.

If you have doubt about a word, don't delete it. Consult Google for a quick check, then several of the myriad of online dictionaries available. Please avoid the appearance of impropriety such as starting petty fights over basic English words easy to lookup, or you'll quickly be labeled a WP:TROLL and banned. Thanks.

It is difficult to reply to this person. One should not use such a moral ground, when in the first volley of communication a banning threat is issued. Secondly, the user is hiding behind an IP address; no UserName means it is hard to communicate with the person.

re:Issue of Nacos & articles linked to her

RE: Converting an article title to end in "accent", not "Accent"

Hi, Dogru. I think the only way you can do that is to move the page to "Tidewater accent." Just click "edit," then the move tab. You might want to look at meta:Help:Moving a page if you want more info.

When I type "Tidewater accent," I get sent to "Tidewater Accent," which makes me think that it redirects the lowercase spelling to the uppercase. I'm not sure exactly how the capitalization system works with names. However, when I change the spelling in the URL (i.e. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidewater_Accent to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidewater_accent,) it tells me that Tidewater_accent doesn't exist. No problem for the stub information. If you want to redirect an article, you should blank the text from the article you want to redirect and, at the very top, put in #REDIRECT[[Article to redirect to]]. In this case, it would be #REDIRECT[[African Meeting House]].

Any time you have an editing window open, there appears on the screen just below it a number of special characters in blue. Some are wiki markup, some are symbols, some are letters with diacritics, and others are letters in non-Roman alphabets. This is the easiest way to use accents. I, however, prefer to use the alt codes. For example, to create á, hold down the alt key and punch in 160 on your keypad. You can also copy and paste characters from your character map (usually under accessories on the start menu if your running Windows). Hmmm, perhaps I shouldn't have recommended the "alt codes" method. It is a bit convoluted. But just in case it was an issue, make sure that "Num Lock" is on before trying again. Really, the best way to use special characters is to use the clickable characters in blue that appear beneath the editing window. This may not be available to you if you don't have javascript enabled. Another alternative is to copy and paste (highlight the text you want to copy, hold down "Ctrl" and hit "C" to copy, and then place you cursor where you want to paste the text or character and hold down "Ctrl" again had hit "V". An alternative to using the keyboard is to use the copy and paste commands on the drop-down menu under "Edit" at the top of your browser window.) Quincy Jones/Linux

Thanks for your message about the Quincy Jones article. If you feel that the picture caption should change back that's fine by me - I just felt that the Paris in France is by far the most well known. Also, the article Paris refers to that city (it isn't a disambiguation page). The other Paris articles are all about places in North America that have been named after the original Paris, and are not nearly so well known. I might have seemed a little rude just changing the article like that, but I felt that the matter was a bit too trivial to waste time posting on the talk page.

About Linux: It's not necessarily true that you'll have trouble connecting to the net, or have trouble getting your peripherals to work. If you connect to the internet using a standard network card or modem, and you have a reasonably modern processor and RAM, things should work fine straight away. If you have an ATI graphics card you may also encounter problems (but don't let this put you off trying!).

If you want to give Linux a try, I recommend that you download a so-called LiveDistro. This is a CD/DVD Image that you burn onto a disk. You put the disk into your computer's drive and it will boot Linux without touching anything on your hard drive (your Windows/Mac files won't be altered).

There are lots of different types of Linux system out there called 'distributions' or 'distro's' for short. I use 'SuSE Linux', which is arguably one of the easiest to get used to. Another one which is regarded as very user friendly is Ubuntu - you should probably try this one first.

Don't be put off if you can't get everything to work with Linux on your first try. If you are having problems, you can bet your life loads of other people have encountered and solved the problem before you. Try searching http://google.com/linux if you get stuck, or ask friends on Wikipedia :)Boabbriggs 18:01, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Alles Nederlands

How is it not a movement or group? It is a real group, as I myself am a member. Whether it is a huge movement or not is debatable, but Alles Nederlands IS a real group and their official website was linked to. Perhaps you could explain your reasoning for removing it a bit better than ´´Google said it wasn´t a group´´ when its official website says otherwise.Gorovich 18:16, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

I´ve lived in Tennessee my entire life. The group´s objectives are stated on the ´´Wie zijn wij?´´ (Who are we) section. The only objective of the group is to make Dutch the official language of America and encourage its use amongst Americans, a group united by a sole purpose without the divisions of left or right. As for contacting the group, I had assumed that there was a contact part of the website, but aparantly there isn´t. I also realize that there aren´t many Dutch speakers in America, but that is part of what the group is about.

Aside from politics, we also help people learn Dutch and hold small events at times to encourage people to learn and speak Dutch, a language which is very similar to English and easy for many to learn. While Alles Nederlands is comical to many, we do have serious motives in both establishing the Dutch language as the official language and helping people learn Dutch. Sorry, I thought you had already removed the tags. I have since removed them. What I meant by previewing the article first is to use the "show preview" button right next to the "save page" button. It's fine to post a stub article, but if the article has little or no content, or insufficient context to be expanded upon, it may be tagged for deletion. Previewing allows you to play around with the article and at least make it a legitimate stub before actually posting it for others to see and edit. In the case of your redirect, it wasn't initially done correctly, and I couldn't figure out where it was supposed to be pointing. I probably jumped the gun. Using the preview feature avoids that, though, because you can preview it to see if the redirect actually works or if it's blank. Dont think you need to add a tag to the template itself - that template is used in a number of other articles. Try undoing any changes youve made to the template, and then just use opentheme = Person's name in the article. (I think the template codeword needs to be just a single word, by the way). Re:How to change a fixed redirect

When a search term redirects to a certain article, under the article's title you will see the phrase "(Redirected from XXX)". Click on the XXX link and it will take you to the page for the redirected term. You can now edit as usual and change the link to the target page. The answer is 'yes' as far as I know. I was not around when the show first aired. Heck, my mother was just out of high school and I would not exist for another 10 years or so. The reruns for this show does begin with the very first episode and all of the airings I had seen showed the series in a colour format. Hi Dogru144. We might help Wikipedia develop a better Woman article if we assume good faith and work with TRFA to improve it. S/he's spot on about the section being non-global. And lists, by and large, rarely do a complex section justice. I can see how it's possible for an editor to read that section as it stands as promotion of a few "favorites" rather than as a good articulation on how and why the status of women has changed.
A while back you challenged us on the talk page to develop that section into a seperate article. Perhaps this is a good time to put some real work into developing it. TRFA may even help... -- Siobhan Hansa 21:13, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Mbila/Mbira

I've gone ahead and changed the article Mbila to redirect to Mbila (musical instrument). The reason you had trouble is that you were trying to edit the article that Mbila redirected to rather than the Mbila page itself. If you are redirected you'll see under the main title, in small print, a link to the word that is the redirect. If you click on that small link, you'll be taken to the page for the word itself, which you can then edit to redirect somewhere else. If you go to the page Help:Redirect you can see an example of this with Ancient forest, which redirects to Old growth forest. Hope this helps. ... discospinster talk 19:07, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Daktari

Dogru144, I don't know why you felt you had to restore the material about Mike Wofford playing a tack piano on Daktari, to the Shelly Manne page. It's an interesting fact, but to me it clearly belongs on a page about Daktari or Mike Wofford. The first time, I didn't just remove that and related details from the Shelly Manne page, I moved them to the Daktari page, even adding some more details there. If anyone is interested, they can just click the links! The Shelly Manne article is supposed to be about him, not about unusual instruments other musicians might have played on his albums. --Alan W 03:11, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

OK, I see your point, but I think that the way you added the tack-piano thing was too abrupt a change from what the rest of the paragraph was talking about. Mann, Manne, and Daktari

Hi, Dogru144. Thanks for your comment on my edit of Daktari. I see we both appreciate music and musicians that are a bit off the beaten track of current popular taste these days. How many people nowadays have ever even heard the music from Daktari? I bet we are among the very few. Somebody has to keep the memory of these guys alive, I guess. As for Herbie Mann, yes, he was certainly good, as I'm reminded every so often when I hear something with him in it on the radio. (I vaguely recall a whole show that was a tribute to him on local radio station WBGO a few months ago.) Of course, the similarity in Shelly's and Herbie's last names was just a coincidence, especially since "Mann" was not the name Herbie was born with. As a bit of "trivia," I can think of only one album on which the two performed together, an album by the West Coast singing team of "Jackie and Roy" from the Fifties, where Mann and Manne were both sidemen. I've often thought that it might have been amusing for them to do an album together and call it something like "Mann to Manne" :-) Well, it's too late now, as they are both gone. Moving pages.

Please don't do Cut & Paste moves like you've done to the Republic article. It hides the contribution log and makes it impossible to diff the changes against earlier versions. There's a "Move" tab in the upper right hand corner, though it shouldn't be used if the move is controversial (see Help:Moving a page); there's WP:RM for that.

(Also, I don't understand what you mean by British spelling as reason to move the article - you could have just changed organization - > organisation in the first line at the old location. No need to move it somewhere else.) SnowFire 13:58, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

New York City accent

You removed text that had been added to the New York City article regarding the local accent. While I agree that the demographics section may not be the perfect spot to place it, the information would seem to be a distinctive aspect of teh city that should be included somewhere. It is true that an article exists on the subject, but there should be some link from the NYC article. I looked through the article again, but I couldn't spot any section that would seem to be an obvious fit, and the lead section seems less than ideal. Dogru, I blocked 208.104.45.20 (talk · contribs) for 3rr at North Central American English. You've also made four reversions in 24 hours and three minutes on the same article. Due to the circumstances (you making far fewer reverts than the IP and trying harder to get an explanation and dialog about the situation) I'm not going to block you. However, other admins in future situations might not be so kind. If this comes up again, I suggest you ask the editor on his/her talk page for an explanation on the article's talk page. If that's not forthcoming, then revert once. If the other editor isn't responsive, let someone else revert so you don't risk running afoul of 3RR (this often happens accidentally). I know we're sometimes slow to handle things on the 3RR noticeboard. All the advice I can really offer for that is to just wait longer. Dogru, I've consulted WP:OR before, thank you very much.
WP:OR forbids Wikipedians from committing original research - it has nothing to do with what research or claims other sources make. I am not Rabbi Marvin Tokayer or the Ahmadiyya sect - I'm just reporting their strange opinions on Kashmiri people. BTW, Wikipedia is not against reporting opinions. They just have to be reported as opinions, rather than facts (which themselves are simply very agreed-upon and solidified opinions, but that's aside the point). Hence I write "The Ahmaddiya sect believes that Kashmiri people are descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel" rather than writing only "Kashmiri people are descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel." The key is in not presenting what is a disputable opinion as a fact.
When I first encountered that article, the Judaic thing was presented as a fact, so I adjusted the presentation to clarify that it is an opinion and nothing more. From my outside knowledge I knew that Ahmadiyyas think the same thing, so I added that (with a source, of course).
All in all, I haven't committed any OR here, so I suggest that perhaps you consult WP:OR instead, as it is completely absurd to describe reporting directly relevant opinions as original research.
There is a point of WP:OR that applies here, but it is not specific to the Lost Tribes section. As we don't have any RS narrating the topic of "Kashmiri people," we (the Wikipedians) are deciding how to narrate this topic. This is forbidden by WP:OR, second sentence, which states that we should not create "novel narratives." Unfortunately this is done on many articles, and voters at the deletion nomination do not seem to grasp how a novel narrative is original research. Until RS narrate upon the topic of "Kashmiri people," we shouldn't even have an article, as it is completely inappropriate for Wikipedians to decide what comprises the topic and how it should be presented.
As I've yet to run into an RS coverage of "Kashmiri people" as a topic, I'm not sure whether or not the Lost Tribes opinion would be mentioned - I suspect that an RS may mention the Ahmaddiya claim but of course this is my speculation. In any case, I don't mind leaving out that part until we see some real coverage of this topic. The only problem is that we can take out the rest of the article on the same grounds - in fact, more, because the rest of the article generally doesn't even have a listed source.
While it should be deleted for now, I'm afraid that a nomination would be a hopeless endeavor. Recently I nominated some articles for deletion because they are "novel narratives" but these AFDs ended in "keep" despite nobody being able to answer to my central argument for deletion. Hopefully, there are some RS narrations somewhere out there that can be relied upon for defining the scope of this topic.

Re:Canadian spelling

The main feature of Canadian spelling, I think, is that it is not identical to either American spelling or British spelling. We write "jail" instead of "gaol" and "flavour" instead of "flavor". And we also can't decide whether it's "licence" or "license", "defense" or "defence"! Because, the page registers the creation of new pages 'instantly', and using twinkle (a tool developed to help with New page Patrolling / Counter Vandalism), it takes all of 2 seconds to mark a page for deletion and notify the creator. If you don't want to believe me about twinkle and Special:newpages, then fine - you can think whatever makes you happy. As far as other pages go, I honestly haven't seen the page you're referring to before. It's hardly as if you were singled out in some way though: I probably flagged 20-30 other pages for speedy deletion tonight, if not more. (Ie, pages that basically consisted of the words "(insert name) is stupid crackhead, and I hate him", or pages that were about non-notable people/places/websites). But that doesn't mean I see every page that's created, nor do I care to. There's plenty of other people doing the same thing, and most of the bad pages don't last too long. In your case "Real Rudy" looked like some non-notable attack video floating around on youtube, so I marked it for deletion. I made a mistake -- I'm human, it happens. You still don't understand

The "civil war" is Iraqi insurgency - Iraqis are killing mostly each other, by thousands, in the name of politics (their government, party, militia or insurgent group).

What you think is "another" war is not a war - it is religious strife, it is terrorism and pogroms for the sake of religious hate and only this, perpetuated by a shadowy factions with no clear leaders other than these of so-called al-Qaeda in Iraq (and AQI takes part in the insurgency, too, which is a real "war in the war", or maybe "war after war" if you count the foreign invasion and what came after). --HanzoHattori 18:18, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Giuliani

Hey bud, didn't mean to sound personal or offend. I'm not sure what you're driving at there, that Giuliani misspoke or misunderstood or lied about WTC explosion. I got the impression the text was taking his words out of context to allege some sort of conspiracy. For instance, by highlighting his statement "I didn't know the towers would fall", from what you have there, he could have said that he didn't know in 1985 that the towers would fall in 2001. Presumably, he said it after, but you've not included that context.

I really don't know if you intended some sort of far-reaching allegation, or if something's unclear in there. This seems to be a minority view you've asserted here. Anyway, I won't touch the paras again, since you insist.

I noticed you reverted this edit regarding Global Warming. I'm not sure how POV it is (as you stated in your summary). The current statement means very little "Giuliani believes the planet is indeed warming up." Just about everyone believes the planet is warming up. The debate is over if he believes it is due to man and how serious the issue is. These two points need to be covered for the paragraph to be of any value. I believe the anon editor was trying to address the second statement. If it is POV please reword it, but if the information is accurate - please include it. I mentioned these points on the talk page. No, your talk page is the place to address my concerns, because my concerns are about your treatment of another user, not about the article in question.
I am aware that there are a few things (I said "almost no" above) that are not open to IPs, namely RfA, AOR, and the like. But we welcome IPs at AfD, RfC, and especially on talk pages. This is especially true on semi-protected pages -- although IPs are encouraged to register so that they can edit semi-protected pages, those who do not wish to register are encouraged to use talk pages to help contribute to those articles.
WP:CON says nothing about anonymous IPs, nor is there an admonition of IPs on WP:TALK. WP:ACCOUNT specifically says the following: You do not have to log in even to edit articles on Wikipedia — just about anyone can edit almost any article at any given time, even without logging in, and many long-time contributors do not log in.

I wasn't doing a search for numbers- it doesn't matter how many 'google hits' there are. I was saying that the link used in the article was dead, and no longer linked to a real page. I have found the original blog entry, however, and corrected the link. This might not stand for notability by itself (the only reason those other viral videos are on WP are because they were covered in journals, newspapers and in the news, not just blogs). I am not aware of a canal between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River watershed ever having existed, though such a canal has been proposed for the future. The Romans built a few aqueducts in Israel when it was part of the Roman Empire in the first centuries of the Common Era.
