Cleanup on The Lottery

Thanks for adding The Lottery to Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Culture and Arts. The page was vandalised and improperly reverted. I have reverted to an earlier version with the whole article. In future, to revert a page simply find an appropriate edit using the history tab at the top of the page. Click the date to display that edit, then click "edit this page". Explain the revert in your edit summary and save the page. You have now restored the previous copy. Note that it is acceptable to mark an edit reverting vandalism an minor.

By the way, I have removed your entry from pages needing attention (as the main problem has now been fixed) and placed it on the article's talk page, as I agree the controversy needs to be explained. Thanks for joining Wikipedia! - Gareth Aus 23:54, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Copyright issues on Open Letter to Hobbyists

Actually, I'm one of those Wikipedians who keep an eye on possible copyright infringements. The title of the letter has nothing to do with its copyright status. The policy at Wikipedia:Redirect suggests using redirects for misspellings because theyprevent the creation (or recreation) of duplicate articles, and help people find what they're looking for. Windows Key and FPS

Hi,

just a quick note about your addition to Windows key. I see that the subject is already covered in modifier key and the corresponding section ("Trivia") is also marked as unsourced there. Would you object to moving your contribution down in the article, perhaps renaming "Alternative designs" to "Alternative designs and trivia"? I do feel a brief mention should be on Windows key because it was the Windows keys, not modifier keys themselves that caused the problem. While windows/game conflict is unreferenced, I feel it should be kept because I remember hearing quite a bit of griping when it first came out, but since this was back in 1995, I think it will be hard to find a citation unless I go digging in boxes of old gaming magazines.

Yeah. If you have them though it would be really nice to find them out when you have a chance to (I trust you, but it always help to remove unreferenced tags).

I fail to see how merely posting the President's picture is "disruptive", and whatever you're describing about it following scrolling, I don't see it on my screen, either currently or for the versions just prior to your reversion, so I don't get what your issue is. That editor likes to write about politics, and the user pages are allowed to present what the writer likes to write about. I'm a Democrat, and I don't feel offended by Bush's mug being there. Deletion for "Your Mom"

The content removed from the article Your Mom-the last three lines of the introductory paragraph-was not intended to be out of an act of vandalism. I deleted this content because I did not find it important, and some of the information seemed original and opinion-built(such as how and when the phrase grew in popularity). As I am sure you know, this is not vandalism, as it was done with reason. I will not delete the content again, but I am interested in if you will reconsider the change. I leave the decision to you, and if you believe the article should stay as is, I understand and have no objections. An article on such a topic must be a constant target for vandalism, and I apologize for adding to the difficulty of maintaining it. Thank you.

Your Mom is a favorite target for vandalism, so when I see a fairly new/light user deleting content from it without leaving an edit summary... well I jumped to the obvious conclusion. I still don't think deletion is the right answer; but moving it to a subsection is probably a good idea. Core 2 Duo

we sorta ended up in an edit war there for a sec. i wasnt logged on at the time, but this is my account. (i thought i already sined up for wiki, i must have deleted i or something lol). anywho:

the Core 2 Duo has an FSB (currently) of 1066MHz. they get this through whats known as a Quad pumped 266MHz bus. i call this the core bus, some people call it other things. this is the single most important number on any processer, weather it be from netburst, K8, or Core architecture. so i tried to add a column known as "core bus speed" (having to go thru 20 edits because i still dont know the java for wiki very well :( ). again as stated above, this would be a bvery good number to have, as it is one of two differances between the currently released E6x00 (eg. E6300) and E6xx0 (eg. E6650). the E 50's run at 333MHz bus speed, where the 00's run at 266 bus speed.

you also stated there is no point in giving both Mega transfers per second, and Mega hertz. In this instance the are synonyms to each other (which really needs to be explained to the readers).

You got me on allendale vs conroe tho. Some people are stating that all E6XX0s are Conroes, some say the ones with half the L2 disabled are allendales, some say they are also conroes and that only the E4X00s are allendales. i knew nothing of th E4x00s and just did a quick google, it appears as tho your right.

I'm going to make one more edit adding the core bus speed, but I wont make any changes to what is allendale and what is conroe. 1. RE: Allendale vs. Conroe, lots of people had the same confusion until we got it straightened out: E6300 and E6400 are Conroes with half cache disabled, a true "native" Allendale has not yet been released.
2. The difference between the bus speeds of E6x00 processors and E6x50 processors was already clear in the table, the buses are 1066MT/s and 1333MT/s, so there is no need to add duplicate information that they are also 266MHz and 333MHz. You may be right that there should be brief explanation of what MT/s and MHz mean in this context, but adding that information to every row of every table IS redundant. I'm not saying bus speed shouldn't be in the table. It certainly should. I'm saying it's redundant to have it in the table twice, one as MT/s and again as MHz. We should pick one and stick to it. Help categorize

Can you help me categorize the air pollution control systems? I have troubles editing the categories, when I want to edit, it shows only this sign "*" on the page. Any suggestion? The Vindictive 14:22, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not exactly sure what you were trying to do or why it wasn't working, but I have edited several of your categories making them subcategories of each other, and in Category:Scrubbers, making it indicate the main article. You may with to edit your various pollution control articles to place each of them in a single category. Because I have the subcategories set up, placing an article in the single category Category:Wet scrubbers is equivalent to placing it in all the parent categories: scrubbers, air pollution control systems, pollution control technologies, pollution. --Dgies 17:15, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Ah, perhaps you're confused about how categories work? Articles are placed in a category by adding [[Category:Some category]] to the article, not by editing the category itself. The category page consists of all articles which have [[Category:Some category]] in them, as well as any description or formatting you want for the category itself. --Dgies 19:28, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

American strong ale is a variation on pale ale, and the different variations are best initially discussed in the main article. Picture need

I reviewed Wikipedia:Avoid self-references and do not find where it says the template {{Picture needed}} should be on the talk page. I did find here Wikipedia:Avoid_self-references#Examples_of_self-references that templates do serve a purpose on Wikipedia and should not be deleted. So I am confused by your choice to move a request for “A picture is needed here.” from the article to the talk page on about a dozen articles today. If you think the template needs to clarify that is a self reference per Wikipedia:Avoid_self-references#Examples_of_self-references then maybe it would be more appropriate to edit the template? Pretty much everything in Category:Image_request_templates specifies it should only be added to talk pages. I presume that this is because including these sort of templates in the articles themselves constitutes a particularly obvious form of self reference. It is also one which can easily be alleviated by moving the message to a talk page while still allowing the message to be seen by people who watchlist the article or monitor Category:Wikipedia requested images. By keeping these messages on the talk page, we get all the page improvement/maintenance benefits without breaking the "fourth wall". --Dgies 04:22, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

I see your point about most of the templates on Category:Image_request_templates they are clearly only appropriate for talk pages (and could use a little work to for constancy amongst themselves). In my opinion the two templates “Template:Diagram needed” & “Template:Picture needed” are different then the “Template:Req*****” ones and work more as place holders for requested pictures in the articles. Moving the templates Diagram and Picture needed off articles is not going to fully address your concerns as I see them. The holidays are impacting my Wikipedia time so maybe we can look at after the first of the year? Jeepday15:04, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Anyone requesting an image on the talk page can still suggest where they think it should go and what caption they would like. A suggestion for formatting, which is what this is, is the sort of thing which belongs on the talk page. It's not like we're doing print typesetting where we need to create the page layout before we fill in all the content. If you really really need to test out different types of formatting on the article itself, that's what sandboxes and edit previewing is for. --Dgies 15:56, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Agreed, my point is that the template and the directions for these two templates in no way suggest that the templates should be placed on the talk page. The leaves four choices:

1. Resign yourself to the fact that they will be used on articles
2. Adjust the templates format and directions to the “Template:Req*****” format
3. Delete the templates
4. Spend the rest of your life moving them off of articles

Indefblock of User:Louiselouise

I saw you just blocked this user (presumably for blanking {{PRODWarning}}). In my experience, blanking a warning template is usually a symptom of being a new user and not understanding MediaWiki very well. Since this user's only other contrib was creating an article which was speedied, an indef block without warning seems a bit harsh. WP:WPSound

If you look at WPSound's goals, you'll see that they are in fact very different from the Requested recordings page's goals.

1. Ensure that all sound files on Wikipedia have copyright information, and delete any that are copyright violations.
2. Improve the instructions and guidelines for uploading and using sound.
3. Encourage the uploading of sounds on Wikipedia and at the Commons where appropriate.
4. Form a central point for discussing matters related to sound on the Wikipedia.
5. ...anything else?

vs. organizing people to create original recordings for Wikipedia/Wikimedia projects. Also, and this may be a trivial difference to you, but WikiProject Sound is a Wikiproject, not a project namespace page. This is intended to be a page like Wikipedia:Requested pictures. If you think it should go under the umbrella of WikiProject sound, I can understand that, but that page hasn't been edited since mid-November. Frankly, I'd rather try to get something new started than revive something which has died, and never seems really to have started in the first place, whose goals are not the same as Wikipedia:Requested recordings.
