Speedy Deletion

Hello, thanks for your reply but why did u find article like Azat Or fine, if it contains only one sentence? Wikipedia is encyclopedia not directory.--NovaSkola (talk) 14:29, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not arguing that the article should stay. What I'm saying is that this article does not meet the qualifications of a speedy deletion. That process is for articles which are complete nonsense, copyright violations, personal attacks, things like that. Without question, an article being short is not grounds for it to be speedily deleted. Again, let me be clear that my removal of the db tag is not an assertion that the article should be kept, but an assertion that it is not to be deleted without discussion. If you think that this article should be deleted, then the best thing to do would be to nominate it for AfD, see WP:AFDHOWTO; it can then be discussed. Deville (Talk) 16:52, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for unblocking my account! I can assure you none of my attempted edits were malicious in any way!!! I was just trying to correct and update the Oviatt Library page.....with a poor understanding of the process I must say! ;-)

As I previously mentioned I am new to Wikipedia and was asked by the Dean of the Oviatt Library to wholesale update and change the current description which is out-of-date and has several errors. How do I go about a "wholesale" edit so that the page truly reflects the Oviatt Library without appearing to vandalize the page? Thanks very much for all your help!!!....Peter Prager

PS: Our systems administrator took a look at the Oviatt Library page, and based on the IP address of the original page creator, we are almost positive it was created awhile back by one of our librarians at our reference desk who was just trying to be helpful.

Great, thanks for asking. I think the main reason there was a problem was this edit, where it looks like you're just trying to remove information from the article and cripple it. Now, it's possible that this information is incorrect (although, looking here it strikes me that the information is close and probably just a bit old), but usually the best thing to do when there is incorrect information is to either modify it and make it correct, to add a template alerting other users to the fact that it is incorrect, or unsourced (adding {{fact}} to the article lets people know this), or, if you must remove information, then to say on the article's talk page why you've removed the information.

I think what must have happened, though, is that you accidentally removed this information, and then after it was replaced by other editors, you kept removing it because you weren't used to the Wikipedia editing tools and history. So, to move forward: please make edits to the article (and others!!) as you feel appropriate, with the main caveat being that if you're going to make a massive change to an article (e.g. removing an entire section), then please leave a note on Talk:Oviatt Library as to why you've done it.

Anyway, I know you're new and it might be hard to figure all this stuff out, but on the other hand it's clear you're trying to help. So go ahead and try to fix the article as best you can, and if you run into any other difficulties please feel free to ask! -- Deville (Talk) 16:26, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote on talk page Gavrilo Princip 10 days ago. Maybe user PRODUCER can explain whow that Гаврило Принцип is not Serbian Cyrillic but only Cyrillic. That is Serbian Cyrillic, unique Cyrillic like a English Alphabeth is unique alphabeth. It is a fact that nobody can deny. Producer is vandal, not me. Yugoslav language and Yugoslav Cirillic dont exist. Yugoslavia dont exist any more. Yugoslavs where people from Yugoslavia with serbian, croat or other origin. At the time of Gavrilo Princip, nobody declared himself as Yugoslav. Blocks

IP 71.31.243.127 (User talk:71.31.243.127) vandalized the Whale Wars page after the 24hr block was lifted. The IP also vandalized before you initial block ( please see Revision history of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society)What is the best way to request an indefinite block for the IP on this article. There are a whole bunch of ins and outs with these and I thought you might be of some assistance since you have already dealt with the situaiton.Cptnono (talk) 05:21, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've warned the user again, if they vandalize again they'll be eligible for a longer block than 24 hours. It's considered inappropriate to block IPs indefinitely or for very long periods unless there is an exceptional amount of abuse, because of the possibility of collateral damage, and this case is pretty minor so far. Hello, I see that you originally uploaded File:AZ-districts-109-02.gif (many moons ago). Hopefully you can assist me here, or at least point me in a better direction. It turns out that 3 of the congressional districts in the small map are numbered incorrectly. The file is pulled down directly from the public-domain "National Atlas" site, which is where the incorrect data originates. I'm wondering how easy and/or allowable it is to modify Wikipedia's version of the file to correct the numbers, or if that's a no-no due to copyrights or any other reason. Suggestions? Wikis Take Manhattan

WHAT Wikis Take Manhattan is a scavenger hunt and free content photography contest aimed at illustrating Wikipedia and StreetsWiki articles covering sites and street features in Manhattan and across the five boroughs of New York City.

LAST YEAR'S EVENT

• Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan/Fall 2008 (a description of the results, and the uploading party)
• Commons:Wikis Take Manhattan (our cool team galleries)
• Streetfilms: Wikis Take Manhattan (our awesome video)

WINNINGS? The first prize winning team members will get Eye-Fi Share cards, which automatically upload photos from your camera to your computer and to sites like Flickr. And there will also be cool prizes for other top scorers.

WHEN The hunt will take place Saturday, October 10th from 1:00pm to 6:30pm, followed by prizes and celebration.

WHO All Wikipedians and non-Wikipedians are invited to participate in team of up to three (no special knowledge is required at all, just a digital camera and a love of the city). Bring a friend (or two)!

Powerset article

Hi Deville,

I have reverted your change at power set, which appears to have been based on a misreading of the text. But this problem keeps coming up from time to time, and it would be nice to fix the text so that it's harder to misread, if you have any ideas on how to do that.

The misunderstanding is the following: What the text says is that the powerset of the natural numbers can be placed in 1-1 correspondence with the reals. This is just a known fact, a (relatively) easy theorem; it doesn't depend on the continuum hypothesis in any way. What the continuum hypothesis says is that the reals (or equivalently, the powerset of the naturals) can be placed in 1-1 correspondence with the countable ordinals.

I personally don't see any good way to reword to prevent the problem from coming up. I definitely don't want to add language that says, look here, you might think this is the continuum hypothesis, but it's not; CH is this other thing; that's just out of place in the article about the powerset. And I don't see any fix that doesn't involve language like that. But maybe you can see a fix that hasn't occurred to me. --Trovatore (talk) 19:51, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

Dear Deville,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Disambiguation link fixing one-day contest

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed.
