The slimy viper bites again
Finally managed to get round to assembling sufficient material for a new article on the supposed 'Slimy Viper' villain motif (that turned out not to be slimy at all), per the RefDesk question that also inspired Gaston Borch. Good thing we have no deadlines, really. Happy New Year. - Karenjc(talk)11:11, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
My apologies. Thank you for pointing out the oversight. In fact, I've been more careful with coordinate works after I got your notification: 11:33, 3 November 2013. Sorry for the bother. If you wish, I'll re-work those articles if you send me their names. Have a nice day, Sir. (MrNiceGuy1113 (talk) 16:51, 2 January 2014 (UTC))
The Three Impostors edit reversion
You DO know that "imposters" is not only a typo, it's an important mismatch to the article title, right? Don't reinstate it. PMLawrence (talk) 11:11, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
"Imposters" is not a typo, although it indeed doesn't match the title. It's the preferred form nowadays. Deor (talk) 11:25, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
No, it is not, not unless you are using some dialect form which is inappropriate here (this article is optimised by British English, given a British author who used that for his book's title). I have noticed your objection is to my incidental punctuation change. I will leave your punctuation and only correct the typo. DO NOT REVERT IT, as it is wrong in this context. PMLawrence (talk) 11:39, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
Thank you/Question
I first want to thank you for your replies to my question on using the word however. I really wasn't trying to offend anyone (which is why I didn't name the other user). Even so, I should have been more careful with the words I chose and avoided anything which even seemed inappropriate. A careless mistake that I hopefully will learn from and not repeat. I do have some questions, however, related to that other user's editing of my original question and the edit summaries they left. I noticed this when I looked at the view history for the Language page. I am not sure where is the correct place to ask them. Could I just add them to that discussion, or should I add them somewhere else? Thanks in advance -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:48, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
The thread on the reference desk has probably gone off-topic more than enough (for which I'm partially responsible). We, in general, try not to get into personalities there. If you have other questions, ask them here, and I'll try to answer them or direct you to a place where you can get answers. Deor (talk) 14:58, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. I apologized to that person on that page, and struck out the comments that were found offensive, but it appears now that some new stuff has been posted by them page directed at me. Also, I have a question about the statement Don't edit others' comments and do not give any medical or legal advice. in the How do I answer a question? section at the top of the page. Does comments also include questions that are posted? My original question was edited (corrected) by that other person. There were some typos and words that were incorrect. The edit summaries were also directed at me. Not sure if something like that is OK and would just like to know for future reference. Thanks again Marchjuly (talk) 15:18, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
No, the changes in your original question are not OK, nor are the personal comments in the edit summaries. (And the user's apparent need to make a whole raft of small edits, rather than one edit incorporating them all, is also somewhat odd.) But in this case it's probably best to just drop the matter and walk away; as I said above, the thread has already veered way off topic, and the ref desk is not the place for arguments. The incivility hasn't really reached the point where administrator action can be taken, and the other user is clearly irritated. Best to avoid adding more fuel to the fire. Deor (talk) 15:33, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Good advice, Deor, and thank you. (So why did you take an unnecessary swipe at Malleus given the opportunity?! It seems a bit inconsistent to say the least.) Sincere, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 16:03, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
I don't claim to be consistent! If you run into such a problem on the reference desk in the future, it's best to bring up your concerns on the desk's talk page rather than on the desk itself (which is what Ihardlythinkso should have done in the first place). Deor (talk) 16:11, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
If that's a reply for me, then why in the third person?! Ihardlythinkso (talk) 16:26, 14 January 2014 (UTC) p.s. If you have no tether to consistency, then, I suppose, you should expect (more) complaints and objections (not only from me, but from anyone, given whatever situation you contribute to).
Sorry, I didn't notice that that comment was from you rather than Marchjuly, who was the person I was talking to in this thread. Deor (talk) 16:33, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Well, I think otherwise. On WP, in general, when a quotation is not a complete sentence (beginning with a lowercase letter, for instance), the terminal punctuation belongs outside the closing quotation mark. That's not the way I do it elsewhere (as I'm an American), but that's the way the WP MOS calls for. Deor (talk) 15:15, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes, Sagaciousphil, that particular infobox is a screwy one, and the documentation seems to be self-contradictory, as well as unclear in places. I had to play around with the infobox for a while, too. Deor (talk) 16:45, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
The template documentation just confused me even more - I find coordinates baffling at the best of times, so your help was much appreciated. (I fixed my typo in the header on your talk page while I was back here! Caste -> Castle ... duh!) SagaciousPhil - Chat16:54, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Longner Hall may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "[]"s and 2 "{}"s likely mistaking one for another. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

OK. I neglected to look at the article's history, just noticed that there was an error message attached to the coordinates. I should have dug farther. Deor (talk) 08:52, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Bungo, Luanda, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Baía (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi, Deor. You need to answer the standard questions here, and indicate acceptance of the nomination, and then it can be transcluded to the main RFA page. I'd remove the space for a second nominator if I were you. (Just a silly idea of Floquenbeam's as far as I can see.) I think that's all it needs to be good to go. Floq? Is there anything else? Bishonen | talk20:55, 8 June 2014 (UTC).
OK, thanks. I'll try to get around to answering the questions tonight or tomorrow morning and then transclude the page to WP:RFA. I think I'd better delete your early support (though I appreciate it) before doing so, since "it is recommended that no comments are made in the support, oppose, or neutral sections of the RfA before transcluding it into the main RfA page". Deor (talk) 21:22, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
Bish, I'd been led to believe (by Drmies' comment somewhere) that you and possibly others were co-nominating. Maybe he was joking and my joke meter was off? Anyway, yes, delete that if there are no others. Then Deor, yes, you just answer the questions, make a statement of your own between Drmies' nom and your acceptance only if you want to (some people do, some don't), transclude, and finally subst that silly timestamp template near the top of the page. And as ridiculous as it seems, yes removing Bish's premature support is wise, if only to avoid the inevitable "candidate can't read instructions and allowed another editor to violate the rules" oppose.
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Yarmouk University, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page JOR (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Hello Deor, I have closed your request for adminship as successful; congratulations for this result. I should note, however, that with its moderate level of opposition, it would be best to heed any concerns when going forward, although I am sure that you are already aware of this. As always, the administrators' reading list is worth a read and the new admin school is most certainly available if you feel that you might require some practice with the tools in a safe environment prior to applying them elsewhere. Good luck with your adminship! Acalamari13:19, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Congrats. My own !vote came too late (I hadn't noticed that the RFA has already been closed), but I wish you luck with the new tools. FWIW, I have one piece of advice for any new admin: tread carefully, because mistaken inaction attracts little comment but mistaken admin actions cause a lot of drama. --BrownHairedGirl(talk) • (contribs) 13:55, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Congrats Deor. It seems we're all out of t-shirts, but I'll see if I can leave you a six-pack of beer and some imported cheeses. Drmies (talk) 14:50, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Indeed well done...and now if you wanna practice, the thing I found most useful is protecting articles - take a look at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection every so often. My estimate is usually to protect for 1.5 times as long as the period of vandalism, but rapidly lengthening periods in cases of recurrent silliness, or use one's discretion for a sensitive BLP for longer. Anyway, have fun....Cas Liber (talk·contribs) 20:52, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Great news and I must apologise for not participating, although I would obviously have supported you. I really must pay more attention to RfA. Feel free to ask me any questions although I certainly still don't have all the answers! Dougweller (talk) 20:50, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
Congrats! and I also apologise for not adding my support. Though I added questions but forgot to support. Sorry JimCarter(talk)07:59, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
I'll gladly give any advice you may ask for, especially about deletion. There have been other candidates who I have oppoosed on similar grounds who have been very successful, and I expect you'll be one also. DGG ( talk ) 19:15, 18 June 2014 (UTC)
@Bishonen: No, no. Look at my comment below your post and the penultimate sentence of Floq's comment. See also WP:RFA/N#Reminders, third bullet point. Deor (talk)
I was just trying not to screw up the closure too badly. (I had to force myself not to type "non-admin closure" in the close and the edit summary.) I've been trying my hand at speedy deletions yesterday and today, and no one's complained yet—knock on wood. Deor (talk) 12:50, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
I've only been an admin two years, I still read the directions quite often, and just the other day I borked a bunch of AFD closures, and someone had to fix them. Don't worry, part of the fun of being an admin is having lots of new ways to screw up, and hundreds of people who enjoy pointing out your mistakes. As long as you get it right most of the time, it's a good day. Dennis Brown | 2¢ | WER12:54, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
OK, I've created a redirect at that title. I missed the earlier AfD beacuse the article about her was just called "Jashodaben" at that time. Deor (talk) 11:10, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
