Hello. Thank you for blocking 134.6.60.70. Unfortunately they're going after us at their talk page. I'm requesting TPA here because apparently I can't do that at AIV. Thanks! ~~ lol1VNIO (I made a mistake? talk to me) 20:57, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
For those who may have missed it in our last newsletter, here's a quick reminder to see the letter we have drafted, and if you support it, do please go ahead and sign it. If you already signed, thanks. Also, if you haven't noticed, the backlog has been trending up lately; all reviews are greatly appreciated.

The redirects were created long ago and are in the ‘gray area’, since the names are between original research and the information found in reliable sources. I believe redirects mentioned, as well as Kapau a Nuakea just confuse.
The page about Nuʻakea was created by me when I didn‘t understand notability measures, so if you like, delete the article. Wikipedia isn’t a genealogy site; what’s known about Nuʻakea are her parents’ names, partner’s name and the fact she had a famous child. One’s notability cannot be made from another one’s. Miha (talk) 17:08, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for the message. But I'm not sure that there is any policy-based reason for me to unilaterally speedy-delete those pages. Kapauanuakea was created as the result of a page move; Kamauli-wahine was created by another user and does not seem like an implausible typo; and Nuʻakea can't be deleted by author request because there have been other significant contributors such as 93.136.124.10. You are welcome, of course, to nominate the redirects at WP:RFD and the article via WP:PROD or WP:AFD if you wish. DanCherek (talk) 17:32, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
I understand all should follow the rules. Unfortunately, I can’t present evidence the redirects are ‘harmful’—they’re just pointless. Kapauanuakea is a name found on the (amateur) genealogy sites, so I changed the title in 2021, since the ruler is known as Kapau-a-Nuʻakea in historians’ works. Kamauliwahine’s name is written without a dash in modern historiography. Miha (talk) 18:31, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
P. S. I didn't change the title on my own; rather, another user moved the page when I requested. Should the redirects stay? Not harmful, but not useful. Miha (talk) 18:35, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
I agree they're pretty harmless, and if they help readers get to the correctly-titled article, then it's probably a good thing to keep them around. Kapauanuakea has gotten about 150 pageviews since it was moved last year, so I think there are at least some readers – who may not remember where the dashes or ʻokina are located, or who are coming here from those amateur genealogy sites – who benefit from the redirect. Query about Greenwich University, Karachi content Removed
Dear DanCherek,
Yes content is copied from Greenwich University Karachi official website as reference is given by mentioning website url, it is not an advertisement, it is introduction of University, how the student or any person will get the info about the university if the content is not written well so that's why i copied the material from their Website. so i request you please do not remove the content as it is perfect content and undo the content. 110.34.36.18 (talk) 07:27, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
My Apologies on that, i will upload the content carefully and avoid using these words and i will upload unique content for Greenwich University, Thankyou for your response 110.34.36.18 (talk) 12:03, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you Dan for the welcome! Will study the guidelines and how to do things for now. Anything you feel I should read first? --AccurEdited (talk) 15:59, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi AccurEdited, I've posted a welcome message on your talk page with some helpful links for you as you get started. But, don't feel like you need to read every single one of them in their entirety before you do anything else, though – another good way to start is to find some articles about topics that you're interested in and edit them. Let me know at any time if you have additional questions! DanCherek (talk) 17:26, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
I created the page myself but spelled Karl instead of Charles. The page is therefore wrong because of a typo I did myself during the creation. Munifico (talk) 23:58, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi there! I think it's okay to leave the redirect in place, even if the main article is titled differently. I declined the speedy deletion request because I did a Google search for "Bringing home the body of King Karl XII" and found plenty of matches for that spelling, so it may be helpful to readers who are trying to get to the article. Redirects are cheap, and it seems fine to keep around for now. As always, if you disagree, you are welcome to nominate it for further discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion. Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 00:45, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
Ms. Rios, both User:Jéské Couriano and User:DanCherek are very experienced wikipedians who do their best to prevent harm to subjects of articles we classify as WP:Biographies of Living Persons. Imagine how you would feel if someone created an article about you which was impersonated, completely false or attcked you in some way. These editors were protecting Wikipedia from doing damage to Michelle Rios, so please know that their highest priority was protecting another human being, such actions inadvertently causing you minor upset. Since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a social media outlet, such actions are bound to occur. If you'd like to further discuss the draft, let's do that over at your user talk page and not on the talk page of worthy DanCherek. BusterD (talk) 00:15, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
My talk page is always open, but thanks for taking it from here, BusterD (and Jéské)! It looks like you and Michelle are off to a good start; please let me know if I can be of assistance along the way. DanCherek (talk) 01:11, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
Since you're the deleting admin I'm giving you a heads up I plan on creating a new draft using found sources. I'd like to do this in cooperation with the subject as opposed to doing it meatpuppet-style. I intend to put any such created draft up for AFC review before any move back to mainspace. I would think this could take a few weeks or so, depending on Ms. Rios' assistance. Who knows? We may have found someone which can help us improve theater-related pages. If, not, at least we may gain a good example of BLP cooperation to put forward. BusterD (talk) 04:15, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Dan. Hope all is well. A belated congrats on your well-deserved adminship! As you seem to be the most active REX editor, just thought I'd leave a note that for the foreseeable future I have access to the collections of cornell university libraries pretty much daily. If you happen to see portions of a book or resource that they hold requested, feel free to ping me and I'll try to help out. They also have very good ILL relationships with various universities, but especially fast for ones held by those in the ivy league, so I may be able to request some scans through that as well. Best, Eddie891TalkWork03:01, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks Eddie! That's awesome, I'll keep that in mind (and great to hear about Cornell!). Also, as I mentioned to Gerda above, I'll be finishing up my graduate program in a few months and may be much more reliant on REX myself in the future after I graduate... DanCherek (talk) 12:17, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
That's exciting news-- I wish you luck going forward! And if you ever need something that I can help with, don't hesitate to reach out. It would be an honor to fulfill your REX requests :) Eddie891TalkWork20:39, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Deleted page - i have copyrights
Hello, you just deleter one draft page that i created under the reason of copyrighted material.
Hi. What is your connection with Basel Ahmad Al-Haroon and/or GMCO? It sounds like you have a conflict of interest, in which case you should first disclose it per WP:COI. Please refer to Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on how to release material under a compatibly free license (but doing so will allow anyone to share, distribute, transmit, and adapt your work, even commercially). However, I will also point out that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable, independent secondary sources have to say about a particular subject, and so basing an entire article on someone's official bio is generally not appropriate either. DanCherek (talk) 05:21, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
Dan, I hope you still like flowers and music, especially when flowers and sky come like the Ukrainian flag ;) - I have a sad case on DYK today, Ruslana Pysanka. She was ITN before, in the RD group, Recent deaths. That is a field where I sometimes need help, and wonder if you'd be willing. It's easy: nominations appear on WP:ITNN, they need supports (3 and more) and no oppose, and then are placed at the beginning of the group {{In the news}}, discarding the last one. Crediting those involved is super-easy: just a click on the word behind the name, that's it. At the moment I have Zofia Posmysz there, marked ready last night, but not moved. Perhaps because older ones should be handled first. Perhaps because I received a credit today already. One consideration is that every entry should last for 24 hours. Perhaps do nothing right now and just look and see if that is a field where you might want to work occasionally - weekends and vacation time make it slow, while it normally functions well, I must say. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:07, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Gerda! Thanks as always for the stunning photos. I will think about ITNN, but no guarantees nor am I going to add it to my watchlist at the moment (I did that for about 15 other maintenance pages last night and it's a little overwhelming, so need to try to get the hang of things first ). Maybe when things settle down a bit. Good luck with the nomination, the article is excellent! DanCherek (talk) 14:00, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! The article's excellence is due to Poeticbent (expert of language and history), whom I can't get into the credits because he gave up long ago, so no "updater", but also didn't "create" in the strict sense we use it here. I'll see what I can do, and am not even sure he'd ever look back to here. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:27, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
I grabbed that old (April 2020) DYK when they were still arguing if the attack on free thought was fit for the Main page ... - replaced today by "my" concert of the year (so far), on the Main page but not pictured, and I don't understand why --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:51, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
I've been staying busy! I am planning to finish up my graduate program with a dissertation defense in the spring of next year, and our program requires us to formally outline a plan for that six months ahead of time, so that's taking up a lot of my time now. It's good, though, to feel like I'm in the home stretch, and I'm excited to see where I'll be around this time next year – probably in a new city with a new job! I'm glad to see that you're staying as active as ever (though all that biking sounds exhausting). In a few days, if you'd like some help with expanding Die Deutsche Liturgie, I'm happy to take a look – Mendelssohn is one of my favorite composers! – but it's back to working on PowerPoint for me, for now... :) DanCherek (talk) 19:45, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
The latest fad in biking is using trails built on former railroads, going downhill only, and very gradually so (... but then you want to see a Maar from above ...) - another one like that planned for tomorrow, Debussy's birthday, - little action. The Carus preface is useful, - go ahead if you have the time, but I will if not. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:21, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
Ukrainian Independence Day, and I began a Ukrainian baritone, Danylo Matviienko. I need a break: Bach concert with a baritone, Benjamin Appl. Need to find links for POB, place of studies, teachers, - some possibly ill links. If you have a few minutes, you could probably do that faster ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:51, 24 August 2022 (UTC)
After another look, I won't be able to attend to the Mendelssohn piece, sorry. I thought I found some promising sources but they ended up being passing mentions in reviews of the Kammerchor Stuttgart, and my German isn't nearly good enough to try to make sense of Carus. Good luck! DanCherek (talk) 22:11, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

On 1 September 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Creekfinding, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Creekfinding was inspired by epidemiologist Michael Osterholm's efforts to restore a creek that had been diverted decades earlier? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Creekfinding. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Creekfinding), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Sir! I want to clean up that article, by re-paraphrasing those closely paraphrased sentences. In this, I want your help. --Haoreima (talk) 04:54, 2 September 2022 (UTC)
Great to hear (and no need to call me "sir", please). As I mentioned, when summarizing information from sources, it's important to be careful about close paraphrasing, which is superficial modification of the source material, such as slight reordering of words while retaining much of the original word choice and sentence structure. I sometimes find it helpful to read the source material, then try to summarize it without directly referring to it (of course you can look at it afterwards, but this might help avoid the temptation of using the same or substantially similar phrasing). Revdel
Can you confirm how "revdel" was actually warranted on this article? I don't see any copyright violation in the text as it existed. I used my own wording to preserve the meaning and content and there was no exact same match between the Wikipedia wording and the article content. A revdel can be used only if a good chunk of content was directly lifted but I don't see if that criteria was met. Pranesh Ravikumar (talk) 09:10, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
Well, in this case, a good chunk of content was directly lifted. I compared the text you added at 13:28, 30 August 2022 to page 354 of Modi's India: Hindu Nationalism and the Rise of Ethnic Democracy (2021) and found significant copying from that source, including the following (overlapping text in bold):
"In September 2019, during the campaigning for state elections in Maharashtra, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the law enforcement agency under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, in charge of combating economic crime in India, registered cases against NCP leaders, including Praful Patel, Sharad Pawar, and Ajit Pawar. Similarly, D. K. Shivakumar, a popular Congress leader of Karnataka, was arrested in another income-tax-related case as the BJP attempted to regain power in Karnataka. In 2020, when the Congress government was shaken by factional tensions between Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot, not only did the BJP try to attract potentially dissident Congress MLAs by all sort of means, but the ED summoned Gehlot's brother in an alleged fertilizer scam case that dated back to 2007."
Your addition:
In September 2019, during the campaigning for state elections in Maharashtra, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the law enforcement agency under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, had registered cases against the NCP leaders, including Praful Patel, Sharad Pawar, and Ajit Pawar. Similarly, D. K. Shivakumar, a Congress politician of Karnataka, was arrested in another income-tax-related case when the BJP was trying to regain power in Karnataka. In 2020, when the Congress government in Rajasthan experienced political turmoil due to factional tensions between Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot. During this crisis, BJP attempted to attract potentially dissident Congress MLAs and the ED summoned Gehlot's brother in an alleged fertilizer scam case from 2007.
So no, you clearly did not use your own wording; it looks like you did a direct copy/paste and then tried to change a few words in each sentence. I strongly recommend you reconsider your approach to responding to copyright warnings. Labeling a valid copyvio warning as "absurdly laughable" instead of reflecting on the issues with your edits is not going to do you any good, and Tayi Arajakate was completely correct to remove it from the article and request revision deletion. DanCherek (talk) 12:02, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for producing the evidence. Seems like I had to work more on this paragraph. I agree this was a copyvio and have removed the "labeling" from my talk page. Pranesh Ravikumar (talk) 12:42, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
Hey Dan. Would you agree that this is a copyright violation as well? It uses the same source. I'm asking because I have opened an AE report against Ravikumar where they are rejecting that it is one. Tayi ArajakateTalk07:05, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
I see a little similarity but it's pretty minor. I've gone ahead and reworded it though, noting that I have not formed an opinion on whether it should ultimately be included in the article from a content perspective. Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 11:52, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

Map help?
Once before, I discovered that you have a secret talent with maps. I have yet another map request that was picked up and then discarded at the Graphics lab. Obviously, you have many things on your plate and I do not want to overburden you, but would this be something you could help me with? If not, no worries. I am always thankful for your ability to help when you can. SusunW (talk) 17:44, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Susun. I think your request is to take this map and update some of the text in the legend? I can try to do that but it may be a few days before I can get to it. DanCherek (talk) 17:54, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Yes, that's exactly what I need. No problem, I just took the article live today. If you note in the request the North/South orientation on the map in that book is wrong, which might also be confusing to people. I really appreciate you taking a look at it. Should I mark the request at the Graphics lab as resolved? SusunW (talk) 18:26, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
I don't see a North/South marking on the map, am I missing something? Sure, feel free to resolve the request if you'd like. DanCherek (talk) 18:51, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Exactly, there isn't one on that map, but I found a digitized copy of the book which gives its text and a few images. Although it doesn't give the map from page 255, it has this plate 29 which shows the north/south orientation of the property. SusunW (talk) 19:39, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
No idea. I looked at both the 1855 original map and the 2022 "redo" (page 51, via Project Muse) by Miller Shores Wright and neither of them explains what those squares are, nor can I see any such squares on the map itself, that they might relate to. SusunW (talk) 15:16, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
About your worrisome comment and disregard of the civility policy
Hi. I am contacting you per WP:ADMINISTRATORABUSE, "If a user believes an administrator has acted improperly, they should express their concerns directly to the administrator responsible and try to come to a resolution in an orderly and civil manner."
Summary
On 5 September 2022 I contacted you in the talk page of Wikipedia talk:Requests for permissions requesting your review of the permission you granted to Protonk as a pending changes reviewer. Also requesting at least your admonition to said editor due to gross violation of the civility policy. Given your inappropriate response, brushing aside my complaint and even expressing support for the other editor, I feel compelled to complain and try to resolve the dispute with you hereby.
Context
The user Protonk criticized me in the Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Pending changes reviewer thread, writing, "it is...worrisome that you have been here for as long as you have with as many edits as you have and you talk to people like this. I would not want to work with someone who behaved like this". Apparently they didn't like that I pointed out policies and guidelines regarding in my opinion baseless accusations against me by an adiministrator, in which I did not use any fool language at all and remained civil, although highly demoralized.
I posted in Protonk's talk page, seeking an explanation about their criticism directed at me. Ironically, Protonk, despite the aforementioned criticism towards me about how I was talking, decided to reply to me in this manner, "User:Thinker78, you came to my fucking talk page moaning about some shit ANOTHER editor said and accusing me of not understanding things and when I (only one in a line of too patient Wikipedians) tried to explain to you that your problem was you love to lecture other editors about shit you don't understand (policy, editing, logic, just to name a few) you demonstrated in the most obtuse way possible that you weren't interested in listening."
I was interested in listening, but I was trying to make a point that Protonk was in their own view of things, lecturing me, but at the same time criticized me for "lecturing" others. Then Protonk just asked me if it was a joke, and then I thought they were not interested in discussing things and was just wasting my time. I have to point out that Protonk did state previously that I was wasting someone else's time, so there shouldn't be an issue for me saying the same thing about them. I stated that Protonk was displaying poor analytical skills, which is my opinion based on my understanding that Protonk misunderstood issues that I could have explained at length if I was given the opportunity to, instead of first being dismissed as a prank and being told off by gross rudeness the level of which I have never done in Wikipedia.
For some reason, after bringing to your attention such rudeness and gross profanity, you, DanCherek, an administrator in Wikipedia, decided to instead rebuke me for unrelated issues. You also brushed aside said incivility and even showed support for the other editor.
My expectation
My expectation was simple enough. Simply to conduct a neutral review on your decision to grant a permission, due to such display of incivility. Or in any case, to admonish said editor for violating the civility policy, given that it was your decision to grant them advanced rights. One would expect an editor with advanced rights would have better standards of behavior, better judgment and cohesion in their arguments. It doesn't seem it is good judgment or good cohesion in arguments to be criticizing someone for "talk to people like this" for pointing out policies and guidelines while at the same time failing to behave with basic civility. It doesn't seem it is good judgment or good cohesion in arguments to be telling someone they wasted someone else's time and not understanding policies and guidelines, while at the same time snapping furiously when told a similar thing.
It would have sufficed at least a response reminding the other editor about the civility policy and that it is unacceptable such level of rudeness in Wikipedia. And thereon if you decided to, if you had any concerns about me you could have also reminded me of whatever it was your opinion that I was failing in. I did not expect such partiality and wanton disregard for the civility policy, which I consider worrisome, specially coming from an administrator. Thinker78(talk)04:55, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi Thinker78, and thank you for your contributions to the project. I don't think that you have been inflating your edit count or pulling any pranks, and I can see why you are understandably upset if other editors suggest something to that effect. I know it never feels good when it feels like someone is minimizing your volunteer contributions and the time that you've put into something. With that being said: yes, temperatures were running a bit high in the exchange on Protonk's talk page, but my opinion was that it hadn't reached a point where administrative action was necessary, and certainly not for revoking their ability to review pending changes. If you aren't satisfied with my actions (or non-actions) here, you're absolutely welcome to bring them up for discussion at WP:ANI or WP:AARV – additional opinions are often helpful. DanCherek (talk) 12:12, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
Thank you Dan Cherek for your reply. I feel satisfied and mollified with what you told me. I certainly was very upset that after 20 years in the project and the only time I may have ever requested a permission I was treated with such contempt. But life is not fair, so I will just move on from this bitter experience and continue contributing with the project. Thanks again. Thinker78(talk)16:23, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
I appreciate your gracious response here! I apologize if my response to you yesterday at WT:PERM seemed dismissive. Thank you for this message – which I was very happy to read – and best of luck. DanCherek (talk) 16:39, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi 0xDeadbeef! Based on the USPTO Terms of Use (specifically the "Patent information" section), I think we can consider that text to be in the public domain, as I don't see specific exceptions in the patent that would indicate otherwise. Of course, attribution should be given even for PD text, either by clearly marking it as a quote or by using a template like {{PD-notice}}. I have done the latter, and condensed the material a little since I felt that the detail was a bit excessive. Thanks for helping out with copyright cleanup! DanCherek (talk) 14:14, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
Yes, it's quite strange. I'm not completely certain what's going on, but it doesn't really seem like sockpuppetry to me... possibly either misguided new users or a weird spambot. Anyway, most of the pages are years-old and the users didn't really make edits outside of their own userspace, so not really an active concern, I'm just cleaning some of it up :) DanCherek (talk) 23:10, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
I have to ask about this, too. You cite copyright violations from this one page but all of these User pages are different and do not look like copyright violations to me. And it doesn't look like these pages were tagged for deletion. How did you find these pages? Are they listed somewhere as copyright violations? Because I don't think they are. Please double-check them and restore the ones that aren't copyright violation of this one archived page. We usually don't delete User pages just because they are old. Thanks. LizRead!Talk!23:26, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
Liz, I am certainly not deleting pages because they are old. I have no idea why you would say that. All of these pages contain text copied from https://web.archive.org/web/20030828151027/http://faculty.washington.edu/xpchen/, a website that dates back to 2003, long before the user pages were created. I see some overlap in content, but here is a remaining question: the text in City as the Artist’s Subjectivity was a verbatim copy of this, and even if the PDF was translated from ruwiki, it doesn't appear to be a machine translation. So, it's a derivative work and the translation is also protected by copyright. Here's an example: the sentence The selection process was formulated to include masters from various generations and schools, each with differing artistic views, and at times dramatically different to one another. appears in both the deleted article and the PDF, but that sentence, with that specific wording, isn't apparent to me when I look at the ruwiki article. DanCherek (talk) 19:42, 9 September 2022 (UTC)
DanCherek, PDF is a translation of text from ruwiki for June 2021 (my text). Yes, you can find a compromise. Restore the article and remove the questionable text. And then complete the article. Artcurator (talk) 12:24, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
As the English translation in the PDF is copyright, the article should not be restored (all of the readable prose in the article was copied from the PDF), because we would also need verification that the translation is compatibly licensed, not just the original ruwiki text. If you would like me to restore some of the other content, like the list of museum collections and the bibliography, in your sandbox, I can do that. DanCherek (talk) 12:47, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
Some fans of this film deleting reviews which are criticized it's content. WP should be neautral? I have provided source and review in Talk page there. I suggest you to add it. Rock Stone Gold Castle (talk) 17:25, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for your contributions to the article and its talk page. I personally am not familiar with the film so I will probably not get involved with adding content to that specific article. DanCherek (talk) 18:25, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
The press release was written internally (with me heading the department) and then sent for press releases. I have no issue re-writing the information and making sure to include any and all press releases I have the link to in citations, will that help? Regarding criteria G11, can you please clarify/help me understand how to avoid the page looking like "Unambiguous advertising or promotion" as I used a couple of published pages within the same vertical/industry as references.
Hi, there are a few different issues here. Since you are attempting to write about your own company, you are required to provide the proper disclosure according to WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY. That typically means disclosing the relationship on your user page, and the template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Nsalzayed|employer=InsertName}}. Be sure to read the policies and guidelines on paid editing and conflicts of interest. Here at Wikipedia, we care about what reliable, independent sources have written about a given subject. It's by judging the extent of coverage in these reliable sources that we assess whether something is notable enough to have an article. By contrast, press releases are usually worthless in terms of notability and they also aren't reliable sources of information, as companies can write whatever they want in a press release. So even if it's written in your own words, basing an entire article on press releases is not going to be acceptable for a Wikipedia article, nor is using promotional wording like "an innovative homegrown concept".I did a quick search for sources on Shop Raha, and it doesn't seem like it's received any coverage in independent sources, just its own press releases and websites. Unfortunately, that likely means that it does not have the extent of coverage to warrant a Wikipedia article at this time. You're welcome to continue working on a draft, but I thought I'd just give you a heads up about that. DanCherek (talk) 02:11, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
Can you please Ban this user from Brahmastra Part One Page
The Wikipedia user Samrudhdavid has consistently vandalised the Budget section of the Brahmastra Part One (by repeatedly putting in incorrect and unverified information), so could you please prevent him from editing any further in this page? It would be awesome if you did that. Nt661974 (talk) 09:49, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
No, I'm not going to do that at this point. They made a change and cited it to IMDb, which isn't a reliable source, but their edit was consistent with what IMDb said, so I'm not seeing anything other than good faith here. They also haven't edited since your message to them on their talk page, so immediately asking for a partial block is premature and unwarranted. DanCherek (talk) 11:26, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi Nizam Uddin Shawon, welcome to Wikipedia! If you are asking about how to upload an image, there is a detailed guide at Wikipedia:Uploading images. Please keep in mind that unless you are specifically uploading a fair-use image that is the subject of commentary in an article, any images you upload need to either be in the public domain or released under a compatible license by the copyright holder. Let me know if you have additional questions. DanCherek (talk) 14:11, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi Onel5969, I saw this article in CopyPatrol (https://copypatrol.toolforge.org/en/?id=89931050), and clicking "iThenticate report" showed a match to the Forest Park (St. Louis) article. I definitely agree that if you were just looking at the newly created article without the benefit of CopyPatrol, it would be harder to detect. (By the way, in case you didn't already know, if you click on "Copyvio" under "Possible issues" in the curation toolbar, it will take you to the CopyPatrol report for that article and then you can see what the copyvio bot found.) DanCherek (talk) 18:25, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. When you say curation toolbar, is that the NPP curation toolbar? When I use that, the earwig report comes up, which is what I use, and it didn't show any copyright issues. Do you prefer the CopyPatrol over the Earwig? Thanks for your help. Just trying to get better at catching stuff like this. Onel5969TT me20:11, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
Never mind, I figured out where that is. I never clicked on that link before. I've done a few reviews, and can still learn something new. I'll do both now. Again, thanks.Onel5969TT me20:14, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
No problem! CopyPatrol is good for seeing what the bot found, but you can't use it proactively on articles like you can with Earwig's detector, so they're kind of complementary and I regularly use both of them to see what comes up. DanCherek (talk) 20:35, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
As a follow up, I was doing NPP this morning, and came upon this article: Ihor Tantsyura, while Earwig did not show a copyvio, it said potential copyvio in the copypatrol tool. I clicked on it, and when it came up, near the top it said that you had already reviewed it. Does that mean that if I see that, you've already taken a look at the copyvio report and determined their was no issue? Onel5969TT me13:53, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
Yep, I looked at that copyvio report back in May. The iThenticate report indicates that the overlap is limited to titles like "Deputy Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine", so I think this is okay from a copyright point of view. There's currently no way to remove the "Copyvio - This page may contain copyright violations." from the NPP curation toolbar, but never hurts to double check. Thanks for your work and feel free to follow up on any other reports at any time. DanCherek (talk) 14:43, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi, Mr. Cherek. I appreciate the advice on copyright you wrote. I didn't know if I had copied too much from the Wild Singapore reference because I was worried about getting the species details wrong. I will try to be more careful and paraphrase with my own creative words next time. Again, thank you. 😊 🙏 -- Mat Kiyan (talk) 04:20, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
Sounds good, The Film Creator. Just for future reference, I probably wouldn't have performed a history merge in this case, because it's generally used to repair attribution issues that result from a cut-and-paste move. In this case, it seems like the mainspace article was written from scratch. But on the other hand, if another editor had copied the contents of your draft and pasted it directly into mainspace, that would necessitate a histmerge. DanCherek (talk) 14:53, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
Hello. I have mostly edited articles related to semiconductors and I have come into contact with an irrational editor called Artem S. Tashkinov. I fixed a factually incorrect assertion on the 7 nm process page that asserted that the Intel 7 process is 7 nm, when in reality, it is 10 nm and I provided sources explicitly stating it. Intel 4 is actually a 7 nm process but this editor keeps undoing it while providing no sources to support their claims. On their talk page, I provided them an extensive list of sources with quotes but they refuse to accept it. What should I do? Thanks. LeaveMeB (talk) 17:14, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
First of all, stop saying things like "Cope all you want" [2], that is not helpful at all and does nothing to resolve this dispute. If discussion with the other editor isn't working out, please consider methods for dispute resolution, such as requesting a third opinion, filing at the dispute resolution noticeboard, or posting at a related WikiProject. Unfortunately, I'm not going to get very involved in this specific dispute as I don't have time to click through all of those sources, sorry. DanCherek (talk) 19:28, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Creekfinding you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. The article Going Down Home with Daddy you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Going Down Home with Daddy for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Plus probably one or two more that I'm forgetting! In the meantime my short-term project is to continue/finish working on Tristram and Iseult, though. I'm planning to sign up for the WikiCup for the first time when it rolls around next year, hoping that will be a good content motivator for me as well! DanCherek (talk) 00:15, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
All three are remarkable choices, though I am impartial to Liebestod, or really anything from that Wagner opera. In addition to the poem you mention (which seems to be turning out great), I see you've worked on a few other Tristan and Isolde related articles!—Perhaps you and I can tackle the rather awful Tristan und Isolde article in the future... Aza24 (talk)06:14, 5 September 2022 (UTC)
yes, thank you! I wonder if it would work to add the second choir, beginning the same thing in measure 2, the first repeats, and so does the second. For listening, it would be great to have the second choir a bit softer. I', too hungry to try ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:56, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
How sweet to return from lunch and you did it!! - Next step: I'll translate it to German. Did you notice my Sep 11 music, with two wonderful places pictured? More later. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:15, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
The rose pic was taken on 11 Sep 2021, and this year was full of music that day, Tag des offenen Denkmals, not only singing in church and rehearsals for Verdi's Requiem, but two concerts at special places pictured, one a synagogue (pictured on its wall). Today three DYK: a piece we'll perform on Sunday /thank you for the music!), a violinist we heard in June playing the Berg Concerto (with my brother in the orchestra), and a Youth Orchestra shaped by a conductor who recently died. Almost too much of a good thing. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:13, 14 September 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! - Today, we sang with Baroque brass which was just great! (pic on my talk.) I struggle with the lilypond:
Soprano and alto are fine for the notes. The text: Kyrie one syllable per note, but "e" should have 2 notes and "lei" also 2 (in the alto, let's ignore that for the soprano it's 3 + 1). No idea what I do wrong for the bass clef. Same beginning notes as for Prayer for Ukraine. Is it the key? At present the bass is good for the first note, then an octave too low, and the last note should be octave below the first. The tenor is an octave too low, all of it. Help? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:00, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
Perfect, thank you! - Today, we sang that and other old music for two choirs at church, pictured, scroll to the image of the organ of the month of the Diocese of Limburg (my perspective), and if you have time, watch the video about it --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:57, 18 September 2022 (UTC)
All the Lilypond talk recently has made me realize that your name is a string of musical notes in itself, if you count the "r" as a rest (as Lilypond does).
I'll tell Graham. He actually composed a piece using just my initials. He did something similar for his mother, and she said mine was more beautiful. But now, on publication (on his birthday), he's going to dedicate his Sextet to her ;) - The rest of this talk will appear grey in edit more, probably due to a lilypond markup. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:46, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
In edit mode, I have colour markings (maybe a feature you have to install, I forgot): normal writing white, refs pink, comments green, links blue, headers and italics grey. Some apostrophes - of the c'' to be precise - make it all grey, all that follows, but I don't know what to do about it. I can just type 2 apostrophes, , yes, that did it, if no other solution. However, now all is pink for the score sound that wasn't closed ... --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:02, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
Oh, maybe something Linter-related, but no idea. The syntax highlighter is fine for me but I know there's multiple versions of that. DanCherek (talk) 20:40, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
Hi, I've noticed that you blocked most socks of the Wikipedia bandit, and I'm very thankful for it. However, one of the pages I reverted, The Strange, couldn't be restored to its original state due to a Kickstarter link, and such link is on the blacklist. I stand by the removal. It was awkwardly written, appeared to pass judgment in a non-neutral point of view, contained excessively long quotes from non-free sources, and large swathes were, in fact, original research ("Thus it stands to reason..."). Please use the talk page to seek consensus for its addition instead of continuing to directly re-add it to the article. DanCherek (talk) 23:02, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
It is in fact YOU who is NOT objective. It is NOT a non-neutral judgment this are LITERAL ACCOUNTS from magaines like the ATlantic which is up to Wikipedia standards. You call ONE PHRASE "thus is stands to reason" large swathes... c'mon wake up. FriendOfGodChen (talk) 23:05, 30 September 2022 (UTC)
after the "thus it stands to reason" it was backed up by the Atlantic which re-affirmed the same thing and I included TWO . ARe you honestly trying to say that they ONLY had gay sex in america but weren't doing it in SAUDI AMERICA? ARE YOU JOKING?????
Following an RfC, consensus has been found that, in the context of politics and science, the reliability of FoxNews.com is unclear and that additional considerations apply to its use.

Hi MAhIRTiwari. You can read WP:YFA for a detailed guide on how to create your first article. It will take you through the steps to create a draft that can be submitted for review. Important things to keep in mind are that the article's topic should be notable. This generally means that it has already been covered in detail in good references from independent sources. If you have a connection with the subject of your draft, you will need to provide a required disclosure – see the conflict of interest guideline for more information about that.Writing an article from scratch can be really tough for new editors, so if you are finding it challenging, I would actually encourage you to edit existing articles for a while to get the hang of things. Let me know if you have additional questions or need more detailed guidance! DanCherek (talk) 16:11, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
NPP newsletter
The next newsletter is ready. If you have time, please do a c/e review. Also, any comment on the length. Kudpung keeps telling me it is way too long. No one else has mentioned that. It can be read in 1-2 minutes. There is nothing important we are trying to communicate here, so I think it will be read by people who are interested in staying abreast on NPP and skipped by others, regardless of if it's this length or a lot shorter. I could have cut out the examples of bug fixes, but didn't want to slight the people that did them (and wrote that paragraph). MB01:26, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
MB, I gave it a quick copyedit. Additionally, if you'd like to see how I would have trimmed it further, see this version. (I have self-reverted that edit to preserve your original layout and content; you can pick the version you like.) DanCherek (talk) 02:31, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
Actually, Kudpung edited after I was done (with a revert 'if you want' edit summary), then you did a c/e on his version. Now I am really frustrated! I was going to send this tonight, now I need to make a new version with perhaps some of his changes and then yours too.
The shortened version is more like the Admin newsletter style, which I don't find friendly or conversational. It feels to me more like code to be interpreted by a computer. MB02:46, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

I have recently joined Wikipedia since there are a series of revolutionary protest happening in Iran that is led by women, so I wanted to be able to add missing pages. I started with one that related to the hijab protest but it was flagged as a conflict of interest risk. What can I do to avoid seeming someone like that? I am a sole contributor and not registered with any political party or such. I'm just trying to help documenting current historical changes. Thanks --IranianWomenRevolution (talk) 21:10, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi IranianWomenRevolution, it looks like the article in question has been restored for now. But I have to mention, it seems a little more than coincidental that the redirect has existed for almost five year, and then two new accounts show up on the same day to add an article in its place. Do you have any connection with N6simi (talk · contribs)? DanCherek (talk) 04:53, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi Abrvagl! I performed a history merge, because it turns out that back in 2011, someone did a cut-and-paste move – that means they manually deleted all of the text in Turkic people in Armenia (which is now a redirect) and pasted it into the Azerbaijanis in Armenia page. That leads to attribution issues, so a history merge moves all of the old edits into the current page so that anyone looking at the history can see the original contributors. Longer explanation: because Azerbaijanis in Armenia previously existed as a redirect, those redirect revisions need to be cleared away before the software allows the history merge to be performed. So I took a few standard steps for preparing the history merge – I temporarily deleted the page, restored all the revisions except the early redirect ones, and then completed the merge. I know that's a lot of explanations, but let me know if you have any questions! Nothing in the article has actually been changed by this, except that the old revisions have been appended to the page history. DanCherek (talk) 04:50, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
I think I understood what you did, basically someone merged articles not as it should be, and you fixing that. Thanks for explanation! A b r v a g l (PingMe)04:55, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi DanCherek, thanks for histmerging Turkic people in Armenia into Azerbaijanis in Armenia. Can you please also histmerge their talk pages? Thankfully, all conversations at the former talk page stopped, when conversations at the latter started. So, I've just copy-pasted the existing sections to the top of the current talk page, and moved its archives to preserve historical context. Thanks! —CX Zoom[he/him](let's talk • {C•X})06:28, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi Lois Commondenominator, welcome to Wikipedia. There are several issues here. The first thing that jumps out at me is that the draft does not contain any references at all. These are important for any Wikipedia article for several reasons. Statements should generally be cited to reliable, independent sources. This is important because our goal here is to summarize information from other sources. Coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources is also the metric by which notability is generally evaluated on Wikipedia. If something hasn't received that level of coverage, then it typically doesn't merit its own article.Since you appear to have a connection with the subject of your draft, you should also provide the relevant disclosure – see the conflict of interest guideline for more information about that. New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022
Hello DanCherek,
Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.
Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.
Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.
NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022
Suggestions:
There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.
Backlog:
Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Interesting articles! Scrolling back through some of the photos – the flammkuchen looks awesome, as does the duck curry and the gnocchi. P.S. I like the enlarged "October songs" image DanCherek (talk) 22:55, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
An RfC is open to discuss having open requests for adminship automatically placed on hold after the seven-day period has elapsed, pending closure or other action by a bureaucrat.
Tech tip: Wikimarkup in a block summary is parsed in the notice that the blockee sees. You can use templates with custom options to specify situations like {{rangeblock|create=yes}} or {{uw-ublock|contains profanity}}.
vandalism only applies to editing other peoples pages, that was an article made and edited by one person that is not impacting or obstructing anything on Wikipedia IStoleThisUsername (talk) 21:55, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
Hoax material has no place on Wikipedia, whether it be article, draft or userspace. Move on as your edits at this point are indistinguishable from trolling.-- Ponyobons mots22:02, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
Hello, I am coming up on three months of submitting an article on Shelem. I understand it can take 3 or more months for a review. Could you take a look and let me know if there's any issues with the article? Thank you. --CheyenneDeBolt (talk) 12:44, 2 November 2022 (UTC)
I think the sourcing is still on the light side. The good news about the AFC review queue is that while drafts are not reviewed in any particular order, some reviewers like to prioritize the oldest ones in the queue, so with the exception of two drafts that have been waiting for four months, yours should hopefully be reviewed in the near future. User pages on the English Wikipedia are "noindexed" which means that they typically don't appear in search engine results. This is by design as they are not meant to be articles, and there is no reason for them to appear in Google. If you are looking to promote yourself in Google search results, Wikipedia is not the place for that. DanCherek (talk) 21:07, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
If you recreate it, please be sure to write it in your own words, rather than copying text from other websites to Wikipedia. DanCherek (talk) 14:02, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
Author of two books on Bhagavad Gita
Dear Dan,
I do not understand your point. I am an author of two books on Bhagavad Gita for which the copyrights are vested in me. How do I violate copyrights when copyrights of the content are with me as an author?
I am providing you with the links to my books and you can read the contents of the sample pages of the books by clicking on 'Look inside feature' on Amazon and you can read and see the copyrights page.
You may please reconcile and restore the pages. I can send you a copy of my books at enclosure by email to you, if you so desire. Please give me your email id.
Hi. Thanks, but I don't need any copies of your books. You should not be adding that kind of material about yourself or your books to Wikipedia articles anyway – see our conflict of interest (COI) guidelines for more information about that. If you think there is relevant information related to these that should be included, please declare your COI and make an edit request on the article's talk page. While you could go through the process for verifying that you are the copyright owner, it doesn't resolve the primary COI issue anyway, so it's likely not worth it. My edit on noticeboard
So you know I've got no problem with this. I should have edited the latest and not the rejected screen following edit conflict. My bad. Thanks. --Coldtrack (talk) 23:49, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi ALGORYTHMC. DanCherek (talk) 19:17, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi, and thanks for your interest in helping out. I noticed that you have only seven edits to mainspace (and less than 100 edits overall), so I'd recommend getting some more experience around the project first. Copyright cleanup is a notoriously difficult maintenance area to work in – the things it often involves include removing other people's additions to articles, presumptively rewriting affected text, knowing when to check for potential copyright violations, and explaining the nuances of the copyright policy to other editors, so it definitely helps to have a bit of editing experience under your belt before you dive in. Question from Gemmasalomon (06:50, 8 November 2022)
Hi there! Looking to get some help with two pages I want to set up. One is in my sandbox - for Kerry Heysen Film Producer. How can I get feedback on the page before I submit? The other is The Angels: Kickin' Down the Door - this first attempt was rejected so would love some assistance with getting it right. Thanks! --Gemmasalomon (talk) 06:50, 8 November 2022 (UTC)
Ok great thank you. Will go to the tea house The claim from the sennet quote is on the movie poster - on imdb? Would this considered a credible source or needs to be an article from Sean Sennet? Thanks! Gemmasalomon (talk) 02:26, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
There is still close paraphrasing of this source in the "Key ideas" section (From the banal to the sacred and back again vs. From the trivial to the sacred and back again, Urban routine, observed on almost every corner vs. urban life that can be noticed on almost every street corner) and the section as a whole reads more like a catalog entry promoting the publication than a neutral description. For one, I would cut out the sentence fragments. DanCherek (talk) 16:54, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
Even so, please refrain from moving random pages into your own userspace and tagging for G7 in the future. If you created them from an IP and there’s a reason to delete it, WP:RFD (or WP:PROD or WP:AFD) are available. There’s simply no way to verify that you were the original creator. Question from Pettymars0193 (13:24, 18 November 2022)
I recommend paying attention during classes, even if it's easy But in your free time, copy-editing is always appreciated! DanCherek (talk) 14:42, 18 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the block. Can you remove TP access also? Additionally, can you consider extended confirmed protection and move protection on the pages this user modified? Figure I'd ask you directly instead of making a bunch of RPP requests. Uhai (talk) 01:19, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
TPA revoked. At this point, I'm not very experienced with page protection, so I'm going to pass the buck on that one – feel free to put in those requests (or just ask the previous protecting administrator). Thanks! DanCherek (talk) 03:10, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
