Request your opinion about Last of the Masters article's Copyright status section

Someone deleted it without explanation (see talk section on article page and article history) and I've recreated it. I would appreciate your thoughts about this section. If I am being unobjective about the matter the opinion of someone involved with the article and a Wickipedia contribution history that consists of something more than what I perceive as 2 or 4 attempts to to conceal information about public domain status of 3 Philip K. Dick stories would be more persuasive than these unexplained deletions. That's 3, so far. I believe there are a total of 40-60 works by Philip K. Dick in the public domain and currently intend to note the status of whatever stories I edit articles on which I am certain are in the public domain so this will presumably be a recurring issue. I'm not dogging such works or intending to only comment on that issue. If not for the reverts I saw when I logged on I'd be working on creating an article for "The Builder" which is validly copyrighted. <sigh> The prattle at home has utterly disrupted my thought. Thanks for the response. I'm having trouble locating some Wickipedia guide for doing plot summaries though I think I ran across one a while ago. If you know where one is or can give me some tips I'd appreciate that. A lot of the shorter works by PKD and some other authors of interest have little or nothing I can refer to for crit lit or other good secondary sources but are individually notable IMO and ought to have something said about them. Indeed, some have existing articles but the articles don't say much. Even award winners or nominees can be like that. Refrigerator Heaven (talk) 21:24, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

The key to writing story summaries is to keep all fictional elements of a story in the present tense. "The main character goes into a tunnel. There, the character finds a key. Then the cavern caves in." The reason is that the switch in the tense will present to the reader what is real and what is not. For more information see Wikipedia:Manual of Style (writing about fiction). Pay specific attention to the sections on plot summaries. Here are main pages for information on that: Wikipedia:Manual of Style (writing about fiction), Wikipedia:How to write a plot summary. Also, look at the Wikipedia:Manual of Style (writing about fiction)#List of exemplary articles. These articles on fictional stories, characters, and fictional elements, are the great examples of how to write up good articles on Philp K. Dick stories. And of course, compare what you learn from these policy pages and featured examples to my work on "The Last of the Masters". What I did for that article can be applied to any of P.K. Thanks. I've copied this to my userpage for convenience of reference. Already wrote and used a new summary of "Adjustment Team" while I was offline but I can always go back and apply what I learn from these guidelines later. As far as the vandalism of Copyright status sections goes I've already got something on all three talk pages but looking at the edit histories of the IPs and account I don't expect much. Would you prefer I leave that off "The Last of the Masters" so it doesn't keep getting messed with? I know a lot of work went into this article and someone deleting references on Wickipedia doesn't change the fact it's in the public domain. Plus... Well, what I started to write isn't really Wickipedia business except that I'm not trying to use the Wickipedia articles to announce something, I just want to include the info because I think it belongs in the articles by both Wickipedia standards and my own interest in protecting what's left of the public domain. Time for me to crash and later I can dig more into how to upload public domain images to the Commons, edit them before or after uploading and how to link to them from here if they'll add to an article. Regarding the article on "The Last of the Masters", what is necessary now is that we carry out a discussion with the anonymous editor. Until we fully understand this person's objections, we should stand by what we judge best of the situation. Until the editor fully explains their position, we cannot be reasonably expected to accept their actions.

Somebody that patrols for vandalism seems to agree. Repetetive reverts on two other PKD short stories have been undone last time I looked. I'll see what they look like now and maybe browse some other PKD short stories and see if they are being messed with also. Refrigerator Heaven (talk) 07:20, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Regarding the commons; uploading images is simple. Going to commons, use the tool bar aligned on the left of your screen. You'll see a link to upload a file. Follow the directions and fill out the digital form which will be tacked to your image. This information will be as mundane as a title and description of the image, and as legally important as describing the applicable license. The form was created to be user friendly for the average user, and gives partial explanations for each field. Then, select your file and upload it. Once it is on the commons, you may link to it as simply as I have linked to images on The Last of the Masters. Note that the template to link to an image on the commons, that of Thomas Disch, is the same as to linking to the image not on the commons, the cover of Orbit Science Fiction no. 5. The license was my major problem as I needed one not in the drop down menu or maybe didn't recognize as correct because I'd already picked out an appropriate license from Wikipedia and that not only didn't work but all the fields I'd already filled in got erased a few times. The visible result is the exact same license IIRC. Twice which wasn't intentional. At any rate it's for US copyrighted but not renewed so in the public domain. I've got the Table Of Contents for Orbit No. 4 in Commons and got some useful tags correctly formatted though I want to get some more right and edit the description some. It would be good for an article on that issue of Orbit also. It's been a long day. I'll look at the template to link to the Thomas Disch image and see if it makes sense immediately or I should wait til I've had some refreshing sleep. All image editing is basically unfamiliar to me. I did find a cover for an SF mag with what looked like a reasonable explanation for public domain status though I suppose it could be improved with some more research that would almost certainly be tedious and just be stronger evidence of nothing to find. A 1950s Beyond cover, I think. I saved a link to it in my userpage so I can find it again. You might want to look at it for the Orbit No. 5 cover if you still want to try changing that to a public domain tag or just for future reference. The No. 4 cover is harder to research because there's no artist attribution. It's not a very interesting cover anyway, but the TOC is quite interesting. I am sorry I have not been active much at the ATF lately, letting the Portal wither and the new articles go unannounced, but I wonder in light of a GA review of [[Anarchism]] being foisted upon us if you had the time to lend your expertise in the GA field to help out with the review? I know you don't often get involved at the core anarchism articles, but I think this represents a once-off chance to get this 70,000-views-per-month, highest-Google-ranked-page-on-anarchism article to a basic level of quality we can build from. Anarchism GAN

Hi, I've visited the article again and it remains on hold. I've now reviewed all the main text and have produced a much smaller list of things to fix this time. I've still got to go through the references in detail, but have decided to take a rest. I will probably fix anything I find myself unless I decide a source is woefully inadequate.

The Builder

Cast, I removed the internal link to "The Builder" in the PKD bibliography because it leads to "Building (magazine)". There is no article for the story unless one has been added very recently. I've made a start on one in a sandbox at [[1]] but bogged down due to lack of time and diversion of attention. Feel free to look it over and make suggestions. I'm pleased with what is done with the possible exception of the section headings which might be renamed before the article goes "live" but there is an awful lot that hasn't been done to put it mildly. I don't even have an offsite start on the story synopsys to paste in and for the tentatively titled Commentary section, the Godersky quote is all I've found so far that seemed useful to me though I do think it is very important. About 1979 PKD remarked about the lack of discussion/lit crit of his short stories and that situation doesn't seem to have improved a lot since in sources I know of and have access to. Well, it may have improved a lot if only due to the tiny amount of it at that time but...

Pardon, I've been meaning to respond for days. I've received your email and will be reviewing its contents soon. I've recently received a copy of Homeland by Dale Maharidge. Having read the first section dealing with Katie Sierra, I can say there are many details its covers that are absent from the treatment presented in the incident article. I'll be updating it in the following months, after I've crossed some other articles off my list of tasks. Just to let you know as I believe you originally created the article for single Adam in Chains, as you probably know it was redirected back to the Cyberpunk album due to it's notability. Turns out that the single charted in France and Poland so the single should be a seperate article. I've put the original info you wrote for the article. Errata for the Batman page?

Hi,

I think you were the last person to edit the Batman page.

I was just wondering, it states "Batman's secret identity is Bruce Wayne" (2nd paragragph, 1st line) Shouldn't it be Batman's True Identity is Bruce Wayne?

I might be wrong since it is supposed to be the original version, but it just sound funny to me.

Reviewing the article history of the page in question, you can see that my edit was minor and did not alter any text. I merely addressed a formatting issue. Regardless, I'll help you clarify this issue. The phrase "secret identity" refers to whatever identity, real name or fake, the hero is attempting to conceal. In Batman's case, he is hiding his secret, and true, identity as Bruce Wayne. It should also be noted that a secret identity is not necessarily the same as an "alter ego", meaning a different personality. In the case of Batman, the character does assume an alternate ego in each identity, and does behave according to whichever social mask he wears. Some characters do not, including Anarky, or Wolverine. --Cast (talk) 22:53, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
