United Kingdom

Why do you feel that stating that the UK is one of the world's most powerful nations is pushing a POV? A nation which has the world's fourth largest economy, second largest navy and considerable cultural reach (all mentioned further down the article in great detail) is surely a powerful country? This is said in the article on the USA in the introduction and it should also be emphasised in the UK article. (Ouip) (12th Jan 06).

The economy is mentioned later on, as is the navy so they aren't needed in the intro which is long enough already. The previous version mentioning the Empire seemed pro-Brit pov whilst the final line of your edit can also be seen as pov. - JVG 11:53, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Crossing a flag

I would like to ask you not to cross an official flag on your user page. Imagine someone did that to that of your country. This is even considered a crime in many countries. You are not, however, free to forcibly impose your views upon others. I appreciate you raising the issue but it may be worth looking at the background of the person before you complain that they are being disrespectful to a flag. You asked me to imagine if someone did that to a flag of my own country when the crossed flag was of a entity to which my country belongs. You could find that out quite easily from the other Userboxes on my page (esp. the one saying I'm from the UK) and by looking up the members of the EU, who's flag was the one crossed on my page. - JVG 15:14, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for taking the time to answer. I do not want to impose my views upon others. I am perfectly ok if someone expresses concerns about the EU or any other union. I am concerned myself about the agricultural subsidies and antidumping cases in the EU and US, for example. I however think that there are more respectful ways to express concerns than crossing out a flag many people fill represented by. I am sorry if I missed your user box when posting at your page. I just thought it would be more respectful to tell every user the reason why I listed the image for deletion as it was solely used for a user box that had already been deleted for being disruptive and was set up again on personal pages. What I got out of this is a massive amount of delete votes for a respect template I created and a massive keep vote for the respectless crossed out EU flag. But I also convinced some users that there are nicer ways to express their legitimate opinion, and I am thus sure that I achieved at least something. Have a good time here. Hi! :) i'm the maker of the Francophile/Japanophile userboxes. I'm contacting you to warn you that our fancy userboxes are in danger. Someone has decided to delete them and to replace them by a category "Wikipedians interested in UK" for Anglophile wich is totally weird, as England is not UK! Well you can support the "Anglophile/Francophile/Japanophile categories" by posting a "Keep" comment on the Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 August 16. Ipswich Town F.C.

No problem. I wouldn't normally edit other clubs' templates, but the Ipswich one appeared to be quite out of date. Dean Bowditch wasn't listed on the ITFC official site as a squad member and his article (at the time) still listed him as on loan at Northampton, so I assumed that this must still be the case. Andy Rhodes also isn't listed as a player on the ITFC website, so I assume that means that he's not registered as a player any more - I'll leave it up to you to try to work that one out, you'll probably have more luck than me, me being an outsider!

It looks like the template (and maybe the individual player pages) could do with being monitored so that they can be kept up to date - maybe you would like to volunteer for the job? Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 00:16, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're right - funnily enough, I've just been on a crusade updating all of the Football League season articles pre-1929 (the year that Sheffield Wednesday was officially registered) that were ALL incorrect. I'll have a look at the main article too.

Hi. Thanks for the tags. As per Template:Fact/doc#Contraindications, you'd probably be better off using the {{unreferenced}} tag instead of littering with cn tags, unless you're planning to fix the problem yourself. A scattering of cn tags often aggreives other editors and can look pointy and there's no (erm) point in riling people when we're just trying to improve the encyclopedia. Incidentally, if you were looking to fix this yourself, there's a lot of referenced material on this topic in the relevant section of the FA Norwich City F.C.. Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

East Cambs stuff

Hello from South Wales! As my username Burwellian suggests, I grew up in Burwell and have gotten a bit fed up of the state the village page is in. Again. I've tried half heartedly a few times to make a decent article out of it (about half of the content there before yesterday was my own doing over the past few years) but have lacked a bit of direction until looking at WP:UKCITIES the other day and seeing the Little Thetford article. I was curious if you've got any suggestions, advice, etc that could be benefitted from? I'd advise a hard hat if you're going onto the article at the moment as it's a mess as I'm kinda using the actual article for drafting as well, hence the in use template... - JVG (talk) 17:34, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am flattered that you are asking me for advice though I am really no expert. My initial approach was two-steps forward, one-step back. Like you I then found WP:UKCITIES which helped enormously. For Little Thetford I used the editorial facilities available to us all at Wikipedia: WP:RFF, WP:PR, then WP:GAN, WP:PR (again) and finally WP:FAC. The FAC was an horrendous process! Given the above, I can provide some overall comments which I hope you take constructively as intended

• The lead does not summarise the article well. I would suggest leaving this until last. One point I would make about the lead. Who says it is large? Although the word large is not mentioned in MOS:words to watch, I would be careful of using it unless a WP:RS says it. Litteport is large and is verifiably so!
• Bare external links should not be in the main body of the article - see WP:EL. At the very least convert them all to references using <ref>[http://somethwhere]</ref> but better is to use a relevant {{Citation}} template. If a link is not appropriate to convert to a reference it should be in the external links section. Avoid links in the external links section that are also referenced in the article
• Much of the article is unreferenced. If you cannot find supporting sources with inline references for every paragraph or potentially contentious statement then such paragraphs and statements should be removed
• The governance section seems inappropriatly political for an encyclopaedia. I recommemd cutting a lot of it. Consider what would need to be modified if there was a change in political party and remove all such detail - see Wikipedia:MOS#Chronological_items
• Consider using prose instead of lists as per Wikipedia:MOS#Bulleted_and_numbered_lists
• The Burwell Museum section is probably too WP:ADVERT and should be cut or significantly reduced

I have not looked at other article details such as prose, images, WP:RS nor WP:VERIFY. My above observations may assist getting through the editorial process (WP:PR, WP:GAN and WP:FAC) a little easier. I consider WP:RFF an earlier editorial process which I suspect is not needed here. All useful; Governance was knocked together this afternoon but I'm aware it's pretty political so will prob revisit it anyway. I've barely attacked the lead yet and was kind of intending to leave it til last except it kept bugging me so I redid the first para at least. External links and references are also issues I've spotted, and the Museum is why I've tagged it as unsuitable and singled that very point out on the rather long to do list I've put on the talk page! Just checked the geology (I am not a geologist so you need to check this somewhere else too). According to Geology of Britain viewer, Burwell sits on an chalk outcrop. More specifically, it sits on a north-east to south-west running West Melbury Marly chalk formation with the southern most part of the village outcropped by a zig zag chalk formation.

Icknield Way probably passes nearby or through Burwell? That has historical roots (Iron Age?) and is a modern ramblers walk

Icknield Way passes just to the south, but will get a mention due to Bronze age findings on the Heath in the south of the parish as well; the A11 certainly looks like a Roman Road too and remains of a Roman villa are known in the village, but can't find a name for the Roman Road. The parish may only extend as far south as the A14 now, but it used to cover part of the racecourse as far as the old A11. The murder is news to me but the riot isn't, I still need to work the details of that out though. So, on my cursory review of your draft, I'll list my comments below...

• Nice work on expanding such an article, though; it is difficult to put so much into such a small town!

• Frankly, it is amazing that you've been able to find this many sources about Burwell. On a preliminary run-through, it seems like you've got all the content readily outlined. The only thing I can really suggest for you is that, if you want to put Burwell through GA, you'll need to format the references in some manner. Take a look at Template:Cite web and its sister templates.

Presently, I find that the actual Burwell article meets the criteria to be C-class. My primary concern is that it is not comprehensive, but it looks like you are well on track to fixing that problem, especially given the extensiveness of the subpage variant of the Burwell article. BVC

Hi I was just looking at your user page (being a former Burwellian myself) and noticed your draft article for Burwell Village College. It may be worth mentioning in this article that BVC was not always a primary school. In the 1970's/early 80's Burwell followed the Suffolk system of schools (primary, middle and upper). At this time BVC was the middle school (age 9 to 13 if I recall correctly) and there were two primary schools (Ness Road - now a housing estate, and Parsonage Close, which I think is now sheltered housing). I think it must have been around 1984 when BVC became a primary school. I have no citations for this (I only know because I was there!) but there may be something in some council archives. I hope I am not teaching you to suck eggs/stating the obvious as you may already know all this! --RE73 (talk) 07:10, 26 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was aware of it not always being a primary, so was as least partly aware of the old set up; I lived for a few years on the former school site on Ness Road and I know some of my teachers at primary had been teaching in the village since before the school was a primary. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia.
