First Democrat Councillor elected in Australia

Hello, I note that my edit lacked referencing. The actual reference is page 1 of "The Age" August 12 1982. This is also referenced in the National Library of Australia under Joe Cilmi. Google also has the "The Age" article listed when adding search Joseph Cilmi Australoan Democrat. The Melbourne Italian paper "Il Globo" also has an article on me dated 31 January 1983. There also 94 other news paper articles from two other suburban papers. I also appeared in a multiple choice question in the Footscray College of TAFE Tertiary Orientation Program Muticultural Studies exam dated November 1983.

The Democrats, at that time, were looking to strength their grass roots support by endorsing canditates in local government elections.

Bodyline

"Bodyline, also known as fast leg theory, is a method of bowling which was criticised when introduced to English county cricket in 1932..." Whilst that information merits being somewhere in the lead, I think that having it as the first thing mentioned - ahead of mentioning its use on the tour of Australia - gives it undue prominence. But its omission from the lead content supports the grossly misleading pov that the bowling strategy was devised . . . specifically to combat the extraordinary batting skill of Australia's Don Bradman. The literature clearly shows that it was being used in county cricket well before the Australian tour, and that the bowling of bumpers (as against balls aimed at the stumps) was objected to by Jack Hobbs, Plum Warner, etc. Cheers, Bjenks (talk) 14:28, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

My understanding is that it was only tried out in county cricket in order to assess its viability for use during the upcoming Ashes tour, and with Bradman particularly in mind. It's surely no coincidence that the only bowlers to use it (AIUI) were Larwood, Voce and Bowes, who would already have been "pencilled in" for the touring party. I don't think that's correct. In fact, the article recounts, lower down, that "there had been instances of what would later be recognised as bodyline prior to 1932" and takes the date back to 1925 (in Australia). Also, some of the Trove newspaper sources showed that, e.g., Yorkshire batsmen were used to facing this type of bowling without squealing, and some non-Test bowlers were named. Thallium(I) sulfate

Hi there Thallium(I) sulfate refers to thallium in the +1 oxidation state, as opposed to the +3 oxidation state. The latter is possible but less likely due to the relativistic effects. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 04:22, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks very much. I became puzzled by not understanding the script, nor even whether it was a figure one, capital 'i' or l.c. 'L'. (Yes, it turns out to be a cap. i.) I did my chem. in the 1950s and had never before seen this construction in technical writing, let alone general prose. Since most WP readers will be in the same boat as me, I humbly believe some sort of explanatory text or link is needed in the article. Otherwise, I'll be content to pull my stupid head in! Stock nomenclature explains the system. I see your point that this nomenclature may be unfamiliar to some readers. However, to constantly explain nomenclature in every single article is not warranted in my opninion. Thallium(I) sulfate is a relatively low-traffic article (http://stats.grok.se/en/201204/thallium(I)%20sulfate 442 hits this month to date, 509 hits last month), I imagine that most visitors to this article already have a good idea about what they are looking for.

That said, I've added a small note about the +1 oxidation state. I know it is less explanatory than you might have hoped, but I am reluctant to discuss nomenclature that is tangential to the content of this article. --Rifleman 82 (talk) 05:25, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Perth primacy issue

I'm normally averse to questioning competent editors, but your comment here seems to be a misrepresentation and maybe, even, a slur on my integrity as a Wikipedian. In expressing my view, I may not have used WP's bureaucratic language (which I constantly strive to avoid while happily accepting it from others), but methinks I have simply made it plain that I see neither the Australian nor the Scottish city as a valid 'primary topic' for any reason, and that this view has been shared and adopted by WP colleagues for a good many years. My support was therefore, quite unemotionally for the status quo, notwithstanding that I myself happen to be a proud resident of Perth, Western Australia. So, how on earth could you reasonably impute and attribute to me a belief 'that national pride would be wounded by determination of a primary topic, as though it were some kind of perceived "demotion"'? I am genuinely surprised that you interpreted my words this way. You yourself referred to prior "emotional debate", implying that others had at times gotten emotional over this issue in the past. My point was simply that such debates should not become emotional; it should be entirely possible to have a debate and leave emotion out of it. So the existence of a prior emotional debate in the past should not preclude having a debate today; some years have gone by since 2004 and there can be a fresh take on the subject with some new participants. I was not implying that you yourself were being emotional or irrational. I did find it a bit frustrating, though, that you chose to limit your response to, basically, "Let's not talk about this. Both Perths are really glorious." rather than delving into the nitty-gritty of "here's how I would apply and interpret the specific criteria such as WP:PRIMARYTOPIC to this particular case". Maybe I read that as "Let's not talk about this because both Perths are really glorious." which would suggest that the reason for avoiding the discussion would be because to do so would infringe on the glory of one or the other, or "demote" it, as it were. Revive Wikiproject trade

Dear Brian! I saw that you are working on the trade project and thought we might team up to improve the project's page and related articles. I have worked a little bit on the project's site but more is certainly needed (especially the "goals" and a devising a better way to share information). IMDB external link versus inline citation

Really? I've never seen a movie article that failed to include an external link to IMDB. Looking though about thirty titles at random, all contained external links to IMDB, and I found six examples that contained both inline citations and external links to IMDB:

The only difference is that the inline citation in I Was Monty's Double (film) links to two different pages in IMDB. Perhaps without the unnecessary second reference here, the external link would no longer be duplicative. Will Sandberg (talk) 19:31, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

OK, I can't get very passionate about this but, after re-reading the guideline on link duplication, I see there's enough scope for an exception here. I also see that IMDb is generally acceptable as an external link but NOT generally acceptable as a reliable source. However, I'm prepared to accept the duplication as common sense in this case. WADC (radio station)

We have a slight problem here. WADC (radio station) should have been left at WADC, as that was the page's proper place. The page was moved from its proper place (at WADC) against MOS and naming convensions. If you were looking to put a hatnote on the radio station page, you could have done that without the move.
