Secondary sources are always subject to mistakes, copying and otherwise. Going to the primary source eliminates one step and one possbile source of errors. (Also, in the field of comic strips, there are number of secondary sources, Horne's Encyclopedia for example, that are notorious for the number of mistakes they contain.) So, my reference for Walt Disney's Treasury of Classic Tales is Walt Disney's Treasury of Classic Tales, just as one might list as a reference for the article on Treasure Island the book Treasure Island, by Robert Lewis Stevenson. I hope you can help me with the correct way to indicate this in the bibliography. Thanks. NPOV'sI'm in the process of ensuring that each of the Christianity projects have a todo list template somewhere on their pages. The new template on the top of the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Christianity page would probably be the best place to put anything though. Considering their size, Wikipedia:WikiProject Catholicism might be able to address a few as well, with the to do list on the top of their talk page. I'm going to be going through some of the other, smaller, projects' articles myself, and I can add the various, probably smaller, number of articles relevant to them as I encounter them. And feel free to put in anything you see fit to in the boxes, POV, merges, verify's, copyedits, cleanup, etc. The only question is whether the weekly basis would necessarily be the best way. The Christianity Project has a newsletter for its members, and we might add some of the oldest problem articles to it in the near future. If we do that, maybe we'd want to keep those articles in the list for the entire period of that newsletter, I dunno. But at this point a lot of that is still theoretical anyway, with the coordinators not taking office officially until the end of the month. But I think we'd all welcome anything you saw fit to do. Thanks for notifying me of removing the {{POV}} tag from this category, I believe the category should be renamed to something like "science in the Islamic world" I don't pretend to know the best name. For the same reason that the Inventions in the Islamic world article was renamed from "Islamic Inventions". I have many issues with the content of that article but I think the name is correct. I can't see how science can be Islamic, but I do accept that there was a region now known as "The Islamic world" in which many discoveries were made. Request for Peer Review helpThank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue. 1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ... 2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month. 3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in. Thanks again for your help and in advance for any assistance with the backlog. Credible authorHello. A credible authors' reference is being "overrided" by edit-warring. I recently tried to add to the telescope article but this editor seems to think that his opinion overrides a VERY credible author in Mr. Richard Powers. I've been blocked before for edit-warring recently, so I don't want this to be another incident on my record. Anyway, the other editor seemed to have asked his friend-type editors to form a consensus, so I will do the same. The Islamic connection here is, Al-Haytham. He is FUNDAMENTAL to the telescope and the FATHER of optics. By definition, the summary can include him since the radio and electro-magnetic telescopes are derogatory to the average person looking at the article; I wanted to add it to the history section since it looked cleaner. Image licensesI saw your comment on the mailing list [2], but I am rather bad at using listserv, so I figured I'd comment directly to you. You mentioned that the Board would intervene if a community's image policy was very aberrant to our Free Culture values. I've been working at the Foundation Wiki to add tags to existing images. In my work, I've run across this template in use at IT-WP (it is even used by a board member) which translates to this. In short, it is a free image tag that carries a no derivatives restriction, which seems to directly violate the Free Culture rules we follow, but apparently IT-WP has agreed it should be used as a free license and the Board has not seen fit to intervene. The link you give in it ([5]) gives me an error though, is that a deleted revision or did you have a typo in it? Just as a note, in the recent case I was in, although a party not named did share presentations with me, I never saw anything evidentiary at all from the other named party. Nothing. Which is odd since that party was the one making the accusations. That party has made rather a large statement about how they never saw anything at all, but cast in a way that makes the problem seem one sided. It was not a one sided problem at all in that case. RFCs are typically open for 30 days. If active discussion has ended by that point, they can simply be closed. Sometimes, if all parties agree, an RFC can be closed before then. The closure is not dependent on any other activities. With this in mind, I am not entirely certain of your reasoning for investigating this case. I'd appreciate it if you would enlighten me. I'm not aware of any other more heavily referenced section of any wikipedia article, and yet you swooped in and deleted every sentence that was not immediately followed by a footnote, even when it should have been obvious that those sentences were from the same sources as previous or subsequent referenced statements. In fact, when originally written the statements probably were long continuous sentences that subsequently were broken up by other editors. Once you did that it was no longer linked to from Category:Articles with trivia sections and so could not be easily found by people working to cleanup that category. PlagiarismI thought I'd call your attention to this since nobody else bothered to even though you were pretty active on that dispatchs talk page (each of the dispatchs authors was notified individually though). I have some issues with the language of the proposed guideline as it sugests that importing public domain texts should not be encouraged (the guideline actually conflates alot of issues that are not really related to plagiarism...). The picture was taken from the original British Passport with 100% permission of the new owners of this material as we are talking about a deceased person (a person who past away almost 40 years ago). But, as I said… I was given permission to take the picture and to use it for any purpose … in fact I mentioned to this people the possibility of uploading the picture onto the wikipedia allowing any one to make use of the picture… and they were 100% happy with it. So, it’s got to be 100% fine with the copyright status. So, please be kind enough to remove your concerns about the copyright status with regard to this picture. old bugs, and those unfiledDear BSB, I'd like to see a list of old/unresolved but important bugs (important to any significant group), perhaps roughly organized by project and topic, that communities can use to press for a specific slate of changes. It would help many discussions about how to support smaller / newer projects if there were this list of priorities [a number of lists, with the priorities of a number of specific groups]. Do you know of such a list? I haven't seen one on meta... and if there are well-known saved searches of bugzilla for this purpose, I haven't seen those either. If it doesn't exist, let's start one. QuestionAs I mentioned somewhere on the arbcom pages, I am looking for an admin mentor. I don't know if the Committee will remove my admin powers or not (beyond the temporary injuctions), but in either case I would like a neutral and experienced admin to review my actions for half a year following the end of the case, and present a report to the community/committee on whether I have acted as an administrator should (this would either justify - hopefully - me retaining the tools, or be used to determine whether I should be given them back). Your comment at Arbcom/Requests....I found your comment on the Giano case very impressive. You said much more clearly one of the main things I was trying to articulate, namely: There may be community willingness to deal with Giano's wiki-space/talk-page contributions. There may even be evidence somewhere for a case. But if Arbcom wants to solve some perceived problem, this is just not the case to do it in. If they want to give Giano a fair hearing, it can't happen with all the Wiki-schmutz and irrelevancies that would accumulate in Evidence; and if anyone DID have more nefarious motives such "silencing" Giano, that's not likely to be an outcome either. I think a case right now would take months, probably, and end only with a series of "X is admonished...", "Y is reminded..." and "the community is urged..." remedies. I don't think there would be a quick outcome; I don't think either side would accomplish what it meant to; and worst, I don't think any good precedent could be set by it. If Arbcom was trying to say "follow normal admin tool procedure", it was poorly communicated. Precisely. I believe that's why SirFozzie opposed it. The other arbitrators apparently did not anticipate that tool use would continue given that the RFC is well underway. In fact, several of them publicly stated that, for example, summary deletions should stop. The motion was regrettably unclear on this point, which I lamented in a subheading. MSU InterviewDear BirgitteSB, My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. The Missouri Botanical Garden is currently working on the Art of Life project, which might build a very useful collaboration with the Wikimedia Commons. They plan to use computational techniques to identify the hundreds of thousands of illustrations in the 39 million pages scanned and published online by the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL). The identified illustrations are going to be pretty metadata-poor: the BHL only has bibliographic information on each book, and won't be able to add much more information to the images. The BHL is thinking about uploading these illustrations (those in the public domain, anyway) to the Commons, where they could be used to illustrate Wikipedia articles and (hopefully!) have additional metadata added to them. I worked with the BHL over the summer preparing the groundwork for this process, including setting up a collaboration page, setting up a category and creating a template for BHL metadata. But the next step -- building bridges between the BHL and the Commons -- is going to be critical, and I'd really appreciate your help in making that happen. User:Pharos suggested that you might be interested, or know other St. Louisans who might be interested, in working with BHL and the Missouri Botanical Garden. Closer ties between the BHL and the Wikimediaverse would also be of benefit to Wikisource -- many books and journals scanned by the BHL would make interesting Wikisource content, including works by Audubon, Rafinesque, and Linnaeus. Articles deletionDear BrigitteSB, I apologize for the inconvenience, but have no other way than appealing for administrators’ help recover a deleted article. I published a film article entitled Drits (Derivas), a film by Portuguese director Ricardo Costa. It is the second film from an autobiographic trilogy, Faraways. The article was kept untouched by several months. To my surprise, it was recently eliminated and redirected to the director’s page with no discussion. I undid the redirection, but saw the article was proposed to deletion. Reason: independent, verifiable, secondary resources. I argued that the article couldn’t have but primary sources (the producer’s ones) as it is an upcoming film, like many others listed at upcoming films. A film that has not yet been premiered or distributed may not be commented. Besides, none of the films so listed has ever been deleted or even contested. At last, in discussion, user User:reddogsix proposed that the article should be renamed to Drifts (film) or similar, and at the same time put at the disambiguation page of Dritf this reference «Drifs, unreleased film by Ricardo Costa (filmmaker). I created a new page for the same article entitled Drifts (Portuguese film). As the semantic root “drift” seemed to be the problem, I replaced the article name to Derivas (Drifts) and published it once more with some improvements. As a result, the article was fast deleted and I blocked for three days. In the meantime, a new article about the trilogy was published: Faraways, which was proposed to fast deletion as well by the same user, User:reddogsix. Although unreleased, although having no reliable secondary sources, Drifts is unquestionably an outstanding film for its uniqueness and characteristics: autobiography, comedy, docufiction, metafiction in one. I guess that “outstanding” may be a synonym for “notable” in such cases and that articles like this shouldn’t be deleted without previous cared analyses: important information may be lost. This sequence of interventions is clearly a personal attack by User:reddogsix, supported by two or three user friend. It has no other explanation. It contributes in nothing to improve articles quality. Mists article, which I created on 10 September 2010, is the latest example. The article structure was unreasonably modified, loosing clarity and useful content. NOTE: sent to 30 administrators. On Saturday April 30, 2016, in conjunction with a global campaign, the Guggenheim will host its fourth Wikipedia edit-a-thon — or, #guggathon — to enhance Wikipedia's coverage of modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia. The Guggenheim aims to further the goals of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative, and build on the model of campaigns like the Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at the Guggenheim: Women in Architecture, Wikipedia Asian Month, and Art+Feminism. New and experienced editors are welcome. The event will include a training session for participants who are new to Wikipedia and Wikipedia specialists will be on hand to provide basic instruction and editing support. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives. A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. The WikiArte (Wiki Arte y Cultura Latinoamerica) edit-a-thon is a global campaign to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Latin American arts and culture and to counter geocultural systemic bias on Wikipedia. Featuring an opening Artists' Panel at 10am, with Sol Aramendi, Sharon Lee De La Cruz, and Marisa Morán Jahn, to be moderated by Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, curator at El Museo del Barrio. The Museum of Modern Art and Fundacion Cisneros/Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros are uniting with international allies to focus on the lives and works of Latin American artists, architects and designers. With keystone events scheduled for October 22 in New York City and other cities throughout the month (Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Caracas, & others), the campaign aims to further similar goals to Art+Feminism. Join us for an evening of social Wikipedia editing at the Museum of Modern Art Library's third annual Wiki Loves Pride Edit-a-thon, during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to LGBT art, culture and history. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Themes for this event include art related to HIV/AIDS activism and on LGBTQ artists of the African Diaspora as part of the Black Lunch Table project. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

On the last Sunday of every month, the Boardroom at Ace Hotel New York hosts Action Equals History — a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to learn hands-on in a technology training/workshop session about the mechanics, practices and benefits of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. This is an opportunity for all to gather, share and work collectively towards a more robust account of history. For this month, we'll focus on Wikipedia casual editing, ways to use and develop Wikidata, building better edit-a-thon tools for a variety of different thematic campaigns, and user-testing them with the community. Towards a goal of advancing these tools for wider use with diverse local groups.

 The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be the Metropolitan Museum of Art's second edit-a-thon, hosted on Sunday November 19, 2017 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. Following the first Met edit-a-thon in May 2017, the museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely.
Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords. Light snacks, drinks and cake will be provided. We also welcome remote participation for the global online Wikipedia Asian Art Month, running November 1-30.  Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City. New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events. | |

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday November 16, 2019 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City. The museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely. Asia Art Archive will host a sister event in Hong Kong next week.

Featuring artist-Wikimedian Sara Clugage's "Picnics: An Outside History" for a cultural exploration of picnicking, knowledge and society during the national panel in the first part. We encourage you to call in for the second part from a local park or natural site and share it on the video stream, as well as sharing your favorite picnic grub or other special foods with us. We will begin the event with the debut of a new video celebrating our community. This will be followed by a panel discussion with some of the people you'll see in the video talking about Wikipedia's 20th anniversary, Wikimedia New York City, and the amazing work they do on Wikimedia projects. The event will be broadcast live via YouTube. Feel free to ask questions for the panel through the chat! We will also have some NYC wiki trivia you can participate in, with confectionery prizes.

Our regional group is engaged in a strategic planning process to sharpen our strategy for the next three years, and we would like your input.
