Birthdate vs. Birth-date

In English, 'birthdate' is a word...not 'birth-date'.Ryoung122 12:50, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I tracked down the change you were referring to: Shigechiyo_Izumi. I'm not sure that you are right. According to merriam webster, there is no word "birthdate". According to dictionary.com, the two top suggestions are "birth date" and "birth-date". As a separate matter, why did you revert the whole change if you believe that only one word is incorrect, I believe that the entire correction can stand. Please comment if you feel otherwise. No, looks like you caught it all - I diffed with a much earlier version and couldn't see any remaining vandalism. There seem to be two IP addresses hitting the page; I've been following them on other pages too. Both have passed there final wanring and have been reported. Good catch, by the way, I need to get into the habit of checking history instead of just undo-ing the last vandalism.  This flag once was red  09:25, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

re Brooke Fraser

Hi BananaFiend, excuse me if I am using the incorrect forum to contact you, this is my first night on Wikipedia. I am writing to you regarding a message you sent me stating I was spaming Brooke Frasers wiki page. The link that I added IS Brooke Frasers Official and only merchandise site. If you had taken the time to look you would have discovered this. New Zealand is a small country and making money from music alone is difficult. The link is official and appropriate and I am just trying to do my job for Brooke in sending her fans to the appropriate page.

Dave —Preceding unsigned comment added by Supergibbo (talkcontribs) 12:13, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi dave, just a quick addition to this discussion, I did take time to look at the site linked, and for each artist you added it for as well. I know we're in the middle of a discussion on this, but I thought I'd answer that charge - every edit deserves a chance at least. BananaFiend (talk) 12:33, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, I thank you for looking into this and hope I did not cause offense. As I mentioned, this is my first evening on the mighty Wikipedia and what an evening it has been. The said artists I edited - "Bleeders, Bic and Brooke" are all friends of mine, and Closet has been given their consent to sell their merch as best I/we can. However I understand that Wiki does not want to be destroyed by spammers/hardliners/social climbers/reighley drivers. I just thought my link to be legitimate one. Period. Legitimate information on the legitimate artist, that I know would, as would the fans and maybe even the odd rock jock d.j or two appreciate. Now as it turns out I too are in a NZ band called Elemeno P, I am the singer and I/we have had our moments in and out of the sun, but I wonder if in fact I would be aloud to edit my own information, about our merch, about our website, about our singles, about our band...as I must admit, some of it is indeed commercial. And I confess I'm somewhat of a salesman so what am I to do with the information on Wikipedia...just read it I guess or be silenced or maybe with some wit and some made up linguisticness prove myself? I'd be a happier man playing my guitar far away from the information superhighway. If you want to buy some merch send me a letter but I can't tell you exactly where to send...it...to. Use your imagination. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Supergibbo (talkcontribs) 13:13, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Warning users

It is best practice to use the tiered levels, giving the user an opportunity to notice the message before his/her next edit. See Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace. - CobaltBlueTony™ talk 14:28, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is what I've been going on:
  • Level 1 – Assumes good faith. Generally includes "Welcome to Wikipedia" or some variant.
  • Level 2 – No faith assumption
  • Level 3 – Assumes bad faith; cease and desist
  • Level 4 – Assumes bad faith; strong cease and desist, last warning
  • Level 4im – Assumes bad faith; strong cease and desist, first and only warning
I thought that assuming good faith did not hold for obvious vandalism. I realise that this leaves a lot open to judgement.
I will curb my enthusiasm from now on - perhaps I've been too hasty! BananaFiend (talk) 14:34, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
hmmm... I do think though that level 4im suggests that there are cases where the tiered approach is not considered worth following (WP:SNOW exists for that kind of thing as well). Again - I will try to be less hasty in future. BananaFiend (talk) 14:36, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My understanding is that 4im is for catching someone after a long string; usually we give them the customary 4 edits, hopefully with a warning after each one, and then notify the noticeboard. The user was blocked, though, for only 24 hours by Daniel Case. I guess I've been too hasty in indefblocking vandal-only accounts. I'm going to ask him about that. Thanks, though for your attentiveness. Cheers and happy editing! - CobaltBlueTony™ talk 14:40, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Update: Apparently he should have been indefblocked. - CobaltBlueTony™ talk 14:50, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great, I know that the "thrill of the hunt" probably causes self-righteousness and quick warnings. I'm not sure I understand about the 4im thing, a last warning is a last warning followed by an only warning? I'll go look it up. BananaFiend (talk) 14:55, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's best used on an account that has been vandalizing with profanity, insults, etc., and you've just now caught them. They've already established themselves as a voracious vandal, so they only deserve ONE chance. At least, that's my take on it. - CobaltBlueTony™ talk 14:57, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, that sounds reasonable, I'll use it for people that badly vandalise after an unblock and those who have taken a break of a few hours to come back and again, badly vandalise - thanks for the advice. BananaFiend (talk) 15:00, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds perfect! - CobaltBlueTony™ talk 15:01, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When somebody decides to fool around by pressing random buttons on the toolbar, those are some of the things that come up; links to [[link Title]] and Image:Example.jpg. By checking the incoming links to those things, it's easy to where somebody had fooled around with the buttons in an article and saved it. No problem, a quick glance at the history of this page will show I'm indebted to a number of people for keeping my page clean! BananaFiend (talk) 16:07, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, users are allowed to remove warnings from their talk pages; it's considered an acknowledgement that they've read them. I know, it's counterintuitive, but we've found that edit-warring over leaving warnings up generally isn't worth the effort, and admins know to check the history of the page if something seems to be missing. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 15:32, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ishotavril. I know they're a band and have a history, and I hope they do well! Unfortunately, until they do something notable they really don't belong on wikipedia. There is a special page for notability on music - have a read. I suggested a speedy deletion, if that is not carried out (it is only used under very restricted circumstances) I would suggest a deletion anyway on grounds of notability. Perhaps you could gain some more attention (especially from a reliable source, such as publishing a peer-reviewed paper or even gaining media attention from a reputable newspaper) for you theory. Until then, there is not enough reason to include an article.
p.s you don't need to record comments, that's already done by wikipedia - just to save you the trouble! BananaFiend (talk) 11:24, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for at least responding!

In fact I have mentioned it very briefly to a paper, but wouldn't do so in depth.

When in fact it is so unusual (mark your own reaction) that it is hard to even start a normal discussion. I knew when I started investigating that I should gather solid proof, also for myself. Now that I have it I want people to know about. Why? Because it seems a part of our world just as bacteria, where at first nobody would believe they'd exist.

Probably, when you see my pictures you'll say that they're not real, or that they're just mishaps in the proces. Why would I put my reputation as an architectural designer at risk if I wasn't 100% sure? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylurker (talkcontribs) 12:43, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edit: Helas Bananafeind, your community seems so smallminded that everything is deleted. But I have recorded it for further publications. It makes me feel like the people who discovered bacteria and the mainstream would not believe it. Fascinating. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylurker (talkcontribs) 21:43, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am sorry that this process led to the deletion of an article you obviously feel strongly about. I think the key here is your community. All communities are defined by some commonality, wikipedia's community follows the guidelines and processes set down for it. I am sure that there are other communities with broader goals, or more specific ones that include the kind of information you tried to provide here. I hope this has not been an upsetting process for you, and that no-one was rude about your aims. If you want to contribute to wikipedia on more established topics, create a suitable one of your own or move to another on-line community, I wish you every success. I would ask though that you not think of the community as small-minded, rather as a community with a committed goal whose path differs from yours for now. Poker Is Rigged

Hi there,

First of all. Thanks a lot for the feedback. Hugely appreciated as this is my first article I am writing for Wikipedia and definately need pointing in the right direction.

Secondly, I am having trouble finding a way to change the name of the article. I want to change it to "online poker rigging".

Thanks, Nick. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pates11380 (talkcontribs) 10:15, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nick, to move the page, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MovePage/Poker_Is_Rigged. Do let the people on the deletion page know that you are doing this before you make the move.
Also:
  • On your talk page, it looks like someone warned you for removing the deletion notice, I understand that you are new, but many vandals on wikipedia do just that to avoid deletion of their articles.
  • When you edit anything but an article, add ~~~~ to the end of the text, which will automatically sign your username and the date.
This will make you look less like a new user, and increase the trust people give you. BananaFiend (talk) 10:24, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
p.s I'll be responding to messages you leave on my talk page here, and on your talk page there - just to let you know.

Gregory Hart

If you did your homework BananaFiend, you would see clearly that I, Gregory Hart (Englehart) is the inventor of the Hart Closet Patent for Preformed Unitized Closets. Also, when I posted the SoftCard info that I presented to Bill Gates in 1992, I can back it all up and I can show you photos of my self with Bill Gates who was also a Treasurer of my invention company, Hart Industries, Inc. Further, I have ore than 400 inventions. Of course in my short life span I will never have time to pursue them all. But I have had 10 go worldwide and many nationally or reach the North America market. My inventions are in museums and the Smithsonian has requested some of my early prototypes.

Do your homework as I am not posting lies or advertisements.

Gregory Hart (Englehart) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Inventusa (talkcontribs) 00:43, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Inventusa! I have reviewed all the changes made, and the comments I added to your talk page, and the edit comments on the changes. I have not accused you of lying at any stage - which is important because I do not believe that you are lying.
I do however, believe that the information about bill gates does not have a reliable source. It is very important that you have a reliable source referenced when you add biographical information, check out the guidelines for reliable sources on wikipedia.
Another important policy on wikipedia is in regards to notability. Closets have a long history and a huge variety, while I am sure that the invention you talk about is important there is not enough of a defence of it's importance for inclusion in the introduction to closets.
I hope this helps you, and I hope we can have a civil relationship going forward. BananaFiend (talk) 09:01, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
note I missed the first paragraph of your text, sorry about that. A photograph of you with bill gates and even his position as treasurer do not show that you discussed smartcard with him. Convincing me is not/should not be your primary goal here, but to create a well-referenced addition to an article. BananaFiend (talk) 11:42, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What are you talking about the last edit being vandalism? 129.78.220.7 (talk) 14:19, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I presume you are referring to this. I had assumed it was vandalism as it was addition of unsourced information that was mocking a group of people in general. Was there any reason to put it in, or was it based on anything factual? If so, we can discuss it here if you like? BananaFiend (talk) 14:26, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

aahh... looks like you've been blocked for 6 months. BananaFiend (talk) 14:29, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is Factual

I admit my first edit was oipnionated and biased, but I feel that the fact that Aamot (the choir director) did change the grading system is a fact because it actually happened and people's grades are actually being affected. That is not just my opinion is an actual fact.

Informer54 (talk) 14:23, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I actually do believe you. I believe you because you have added an emotional piece of information that is of interest to only a (relative) few and you have not tried to attack anybody. My guess is that you are a student, and I would say perhaps that you are one of those affected and/or have a friend so affected. Unfortunately, notability and reliable sources are 2 fundamental tenets of wikipedia. If you still feel strongly about this, let's move a discussion to the talk page and we can debate it there? Brian Wilson

The two sources for the cocaine problems effecting his voice come from Jack Rielly's posts on the "Smiley Smile" message boards as well as particularly "Catch a Wave" by Peter Carlin, a biography of Brian Wilson that outlines that Brian Wilson's voice had distinctly changed by 1970 due to cocaine, cigarette and alcohol abuse. Rielly comments specifically that Wilson refused to sing, and Carlin comments that Desper regularly had to speed up tape to make Wilson sound younger; furthermore, just listening to the tracks recorded from 1966-1971 shows this quite well, but this is "original research." There are also more quotes that state that Wilson had trouble singing by this point floating around the internet-god only knows if they're real though-but there's also the critical response to things such as 15 Big Ones and Love You in which Brian Wilson's voice is...well, listen to the albums. Reading reviews of these albums could be arguable as a source, but once again, the main "acceptable" source here would be Carlin.

Carlin attributes this specifically to cocaine, and its effects to be noticed by 1970.71.249.18.69 (talk) 10:42, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK - add that in as a reference. If it's an official autobiography then you can simply cite it, otherwise I would note in the text you add that "according to one source" or whatever you feel is necessary. Good luck with your edits! BananaFiend (talk) 10:53, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Virtual method table

Could someone explain to me how Virtual method table fundamentally differs from Branch table (which can and do include using tables of offsets or function pointers, not just actual branch instructions)? -is it essentially a different name for te same thing? -Why is this called virtual ? -Can't the function pointers and table be statically defined? -Why is it only stated as a specifically OO solution? -were can I find another definition of 'virtual method table' in literature/web ? Thanks in advanceken (talk) 06:52, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It looks to me like a branch table is a general description of a technique, and that dispatch tables and vtables are sometimes (though not necessarily) implemented as such. I've had a look at the changes made recently to these pages and I'm not sure that they're good - a vtable is not another way of implementing a branch table, it's an example of how a branch table might be used.
Tell me what you think, we might update the pages again to reflect it.BananaFiend (talk) 14:05, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Branch tables pre-date '"dispatch tables" and "virtual method tables" probably by 30-40 years! There are several methods of implementing branch tables and they can be used for any purpose including, but not limited to, the two mentioned and also include dynamic loading & branching. Essentially all of them use an index to efficiently go directly to a function. How they actually do this most efficiently will vary according to the platform, compiler, etc but the essence is precisely the same. How the index is derived is largely immaterial; except that it should naturally have few, if any, gaps to avoid excessive null entries and, naturally, be as fast as possible. I personally believe the new naming convention is something of a 'workaround' to avoid the suggestion that OO has 'legacy goto's' hiding under another name that are (heaven forbid) actually efficient and from the mainframe era! As for the suggestion it is all to do with 'late binding' is like saying that the operating system decides where to pass control to, using the name of the application as input, by scanning a lookup table of all valid applications and 'dispatching' the appropriate function. It's kind of true but seems to me to be replacing long established existing (& fairly obvious) techniques with "new fangled" equivalents for no particular purpose, somewhat equivalent to calling a wheel a "low resistance gravitational assistance device".ken (talk) 14:43, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ken,
"Branch tables pre-date '"dispatch tables" and "virtual method tables" probably by 30-40 years!"
Well... if a vtable is an implementation of a branch table for a specific purpose (as I was suggesting above) then Branch tables have to pre-date vtables right?
We are also in agreement in almost every other point you make (that vtables are simply branch tables with a specific purpose). However:
  • You've lost me on the "naming convention" thing though... what do you mean?
  • When you say that people are avoiding the suggestion of goto statements, do you mean that they do or do not actually exist?
  • What's replacing techniques? Do you mean that vtables should be called branch tables? If so, what about implementing a vtable as some other structure? As a dictionary? As a file? They might be crap, but they are still vtables...

Sorry, if you really don't understand what I mean, you lost me too !ken (talk) 16:35, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK - here's how I see it.
Branch table != Virtual File Table
Virtual File Table is a Branch table for some implementations of a Virtual File Table, but not necessarily.
From the edits I've seen in these articles, there is now a suggestion that these two things are the same. They are not. I will eventually update the articles to reflect the fact that they are related, not equivalent.
Also:
C++ supports the goto statement, but if you do not use it it is not in your program for the purposes of a proof whether or not a goto statement is generated as an optimisation in the machine code.BananaFiend (talk) 09:16, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ignore this warning please. I classed the redirect as an attack page, but I see you were merely fixing page-move vandalism. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 14:00, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
