the worse than wrong version

The version of List of terrorist incidents, 2009 that you have protected is a BLP violation. We cannot call Hasan a terrorist when the FBI is not yet willing to call him a terrorist. ~YellowFives 22:04, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm at a loss as to what exactly you should do about it, though. I know you're not supposed to revert the page you've protected. Perhaps you could ask another administrator to consider the BLP issue, and they could decide to revert or not. Does that seem reasonable? ~YellowFives 22:13, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

As you know, administrators can't be taking sides in an editorial dispute when they have exercised their privileges. However, the protection policy does have a clause for BLP concerns; and given that Hasan is still alive labeling him a terrorist is enough of a BLP concern for me to remove the possibly defamatory material. Note, this is not an endorsement for any side of the content dispute, and shouldn't be given any weight in your discussion regarding it's conclusion; it's simply following the protection policy. \ Backslash Forwardslash / (talk) 23:38, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Harmon Afd

I have to admit what a grueling experience that was. While I did not admit this at the time, but that was my first Afd discussion as well as my first article I had brought back from deletion. I must say I learned a lot, and made some Wikifriends (as well as some Wikienemies). My overall goal of bringing awareness and reform to the Bio Afd process is incomplete, however I have found and will soon close some of the loopholes used by the pro-deletionists. In your experience with other Afd's, have you ever seen another discussion that was as protracted or as contentious as Heather Harmon's was? - Stillwaterising (talk) 05:38, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

It's actually not that bad; good job! Typically, Wikipedia articles should have more than one source; it makes the text more reliable. Actually, the problem seems to have been the empty </div> tag in the {{quote}} template used in the AfD; that's what caused the box to end partway down the discussion. I removed the tag from the quote template, and that seems to have fixed it. rʨanaɢ ^talk/_contribs 04:00, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for getting the ball rolling with some actual text to build off of. Originally I was going to ask if it was appropriate for non-admins to input sizable changes... mind you I know we're allowed to, but weight and experience are a factor. The other contributors thusfar are Rollbackers like myself (but by account creation date I still am way into newbie territory... not quite a month yet), which I think works just fine since this is one of the two basic patrols areas. Just wanted to second the kudos. While I supported deleting, fully agree with you that there was a "valid argument" for doing so, and think it would have been possible to close the discussion as "no consensus" while giving a bit more weight to the delete side, you were right that it was clearly "the majority will of the participants that the article be kept." Given the arguments that's ultimately what mattered and as such it was a very fair close, so thanks for taking care of it and reading through an overlong debate in the process. --Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 01:03, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Nominating for Did you know is very simple; although I'd recommend that you focus on writing the articles, rather than nominate them. There are enough experienced DYK'ers that other peoples articles don't need to be nominated for them.

Examples of animals versus species

I added the examples to the criteria A7 because it seemed to me obvious that an individual animal or plant is not the same as a species, but many of the most active AfDers are single purpose accounts nominating as many articles for deletion as possible, and don't seem to understand some of the criteria. This one in particular gets ignored with prods to species stubs. It will probably work without the examples, but I'm not sure. I think it should have worked "individual animals" without having to point out that's not the same as a species... --IP69.226.103.13 (talk) 16:29, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

That whole A10 thing & polishing it a bit

Thanks for the explanation in your edit summary on that government article, and thinking about it I feel rather silly for not thinking of that in the first place. Good timing, too, since this might fit into a few of the things I'm trying to edit-- I'm creating a talk page with obsvervations and special syntax on the A10 talk page, and I'm expanding the "duplicate article" portion of CFORK to mention A10 (in the sense that we don't want to lose any new information and highly encourage further participation on the topic. Semi-related: Did anyone make, or do you think it would be good to make some short templates that could be placed on user's talk pages that explain the outcome of their A10'd article? The {{db-a10}} template is meant to explain everything that is going on. If you want to expand CFORK, make sure the scope of A10 in that is as narrow as possible. A10 should not interfere with anything that could be useful. \ Backslash Forwardslash / (talk) 12:32, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Right. Hm. Actually I might leave a note on that talk page about it, as someone who was part of reinstating it or wrote the template changes would be much preferred. I can appreciate that A10 shouldn't be deleting one scrap new content, which is why I'm smacking myself for not considering redirect as a probably most cases. As it looks to me, A10 is a narrow-spec shotgun AfD sharing the same possible outcomes? Keep delete merge redirect because 4 ways A10 could go. Sizable concern though-- would it be left to admins to mark for merge to be done to do the redirect immediately when checking an A10? I have a nasty feeling about open encouragement, but then again anyone can PROD or open a deletion discussion. My opinion would be that gigantic, endless WP:GAMEing could be done by someone with even a sole puppet and the actions could be substantially separated and not remotely suspicious to report. Though not easy it would be practically foolproof from the examples I'm randomly thinking up. I hope there aren't A10s that pop up this week like "Greenhouse Effect, merge into wider topic Climate Change because it's like the same but with more so move it all back!" ...Okay, extra CSD patrol for me this week. Uw-csd-a10 not formatting properly for C&P in db-a10

Hey Backslash Forwardslash. I was not thinking about the db- template notice when I changed to the un-named parameter format (and have updated the documentation subpage I created to detail the named parameter). However {{db-a10}} is not providing the proper code for posting {{Uw-csd-a10}} on the creator's talk page. For example, if I tag this page under A10 I get the following code to warn you:

2010 WikiCup Signups Reconfirmation!

To ensure that everyone who signed up is still committed to participating in the 2010 WikiCup, it is required that you remove your name from this list! By removing your name, you are not removing yourself from the WikiCup. This is simply a way for the judges to take note of who has not yet reconfirmed their participation. If you have not removed your name from that list by December 30th, 2009 (by 23:59 (UTC)) then your name will be removed from the WikiCup.

It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:

Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.
Did you know? articles (which were worth 5 points last year) will now be worth 10 points.
Good articles (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
Featured lists (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
Featured portals (which were worth 25 points last year) will now be worth 35 points.
Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.
Featured topics (which were worth 10 points per article last year) will now be worth 15 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
Good topics (which were worth 5 points per article last year) will now be worth 10 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
In the news will still be awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.

If you have any final concerns about the WikiCup's rules and regulations, please ask them now, before the Cup begins to avoid last minute problems. WikiCup 2010 and Dermatology-related content

I noticed that you are participating in the 2010 WikiCup. I have been working on the Bolognia push which is a project to make sure Wikipedia has an article (or redirect) on every know cutaneous condition. With that being said, there are still many cutaneous condition stubs to be made, and Bolognia could be a source for a lot of DYK articles, etc. Therefore, I was thinking maybe we could help one another... a competative WikiCup that also serves to improve dermatologic content on Wikipedia. WikiCup 2010 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than Hunter Kahn (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.

Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. WikiCup 2010 February newsletter

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Hunter Kahn (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive

WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of April. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 200. This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. If you are interested in participating in the drive, please place your name here. Awards will be given out to those who review certain numbers of GANs as well as to those who review the most. WikiCup 2010 March newsletter

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to ThinkBlue (submissions) and Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. Wrong AFD deletion decision for DRV

I will open a DRV case when I find time for your wrong decision on deletion of the article [even without a merge] on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2009 Israel Defense Forces T-shirt affair (2nd nomination) which bases on sheer number of 2nd AFD votes and misapplied Wiki Guidelines referring to tabloid news. I added several more RS news sources that covers the story about the case which resulted a ban by IDF against wearing the t-shirts, in talk page. In the meantime you may review the links. If this is a new development (i.e., if he had not played for the Latvian Higher League last year when the article was deleted), you can re-create the article with the new information. We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Two of last year's final 8, Theleftorium (submissions) and Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. WikiCup 2010 July newsletter

We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants ( Sasata (submissions), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition.
