WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

Thank you for your recent articles, including Max Kretzer, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Iyaelima people

Thank you for the notes about undoing the changes relating to the "Rolex Awards" site link and three redlines, which I agree are useful in some cases - in this case two large rivers and one interesting lake, which may well have their own pages some day. However, you reversed all of the changes made yesterday - and in the main these were to improve tone and balance on the subject. Beautiful though the language is, to me, the "Conservationists" section in particular is not encyclopaedic, but an interpretation of a single report.

lSainte-Jeanne-de-Chanta (Île Perrot)

Hi Aymatth2 again! I've been rather tied up with other things over the past day or two but I thought I should get back to you on this one. As they say, it's a small world. I lived for five years (1968 to 1972) on the Île Perrot in Terrasse-Vaudreuil, Quebec and commuted into Montreal every day by train. I remember my first attempt to see Sainte Jeanne de Chantal on the other side of the island, probably in the winter of 1968. It had been snowing and it was not too easy to get to the door -- which of course was locked. The church looked pretty dilapidated and even on subsequent visits I never managed to see it inside. It's really a pity the article cannot be illustrated with photos. Maybe you can find some. For some reason I associate you with Canada, perhaps Ontario. And I see you take good pictures. But I was also intrigued to see that your very first edits on Commons were of my pictures of Fanefjord Church on Møn in Denmark where my father in law was the vicar. Amazing, n'est-ce pas? Since I was pinged .... sv:Jakob Henrik Zidén tells me he died at the Battle of Koljonvirta, but there are umpteen Dolgorukovs not to mention Dolgoroukis: House of Dolgorukov doesn't even have the 2 Ivans I have been able to find on sv.: sv:Ivan Aleksejevitj Dolgorukov is 1708–1739, so too early, but sv:Ivan Michailovitj Dolgorukov is 1764–1823, so died too late, and I am not sure which Finnish page you got the name from. An issue with a citation

Even though it worked in the past, lately there's been a slight error on some of the citations in two articles of mine: Soviet-Albanian split and Sino-Albanian split. Note the reference section of each, "|first1= missing |last1= in Authors list" --Ismail (talk) 12:32, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for that. A question: is it possible to add hotlinks to a few of the citations? Some of the books are available online in PDF format and it'd be nice for people to not only be able to consult the bibliography, but to see for themselves if certain works are being accurately referenced or quoted. --Ismail (talk) 19:59, 21 December 2014 (UTC)

Not sure if I understand. If a version of the book is available online somewhere, anywhere, I would certainly add the |url= parameter to the citation so readers can check for themselves what the source says. There may be copyright challenges if the online version is unauthorized, but they can be handled when they are raised. Links may stop working, and may be blocked in some countries, but I would always provide links to online versions if available. By "hotlink" do you mean a window that opens when the mouse hovers over the link, showing the cited text? That may be possible technically, but in my view would be inconsistent with the WP user interface style. Aymatth2 (talk) 23:52, 21 December 2014 (UTC)

Just stick |url= anywhere in the citation template, e.g. (edit this section to see the markup):

You can use the |chapter-url= parameter if the citation also has a wikilink to the book title, or if you are just citing one chapter and different chapters have different authors, e.g.

If you were citing two or more chapters, with different authors, from one book, I would give two different source definitions. My list of sources would have separate entries for the two chapters, which just happen to be bound into the same book.

Re: Lhasa

My first reading of this would suggest that it's meant for when there are two cities in different places with the same name, e.g. if there were a lot more sourcing on a district-level Lhasa in Manchuria. Can you give me any examples of where this provision has been applied? If you don't know of any (I definitely don't), I'd say ask for an interpretation at the naming convention's talk page: my position is indefensible if the guideline is meant to support your position, and vice versa. You're seemingly overlooking the most basic issue: the city of Lhasa is the prefecture-level subdivision, i.e. the city and the prefecture are the same. Your use of "small city" has no grounding in reality, for the district is just a small part of the city. If we generally have separate articles on cities and their districts, we need to have separate articles here (I don't think you disagree there?), and again I'd strongly suggest that you ask at the convention's talk page. It's quite clear that the city really is the 29,274^2 area, and that several other Chinese cities have comparable or larger area figures. Go complain to the authorities that they created a massive area, and don't attempt to pretend otherwise. Administrative tools should be used, if necessary, to enforce project naming conventions. For the final time: go to the convention talk page, or raise a different issue at my talk page; I am not interested in continued engagement when you dismiss the facts and attempt to ignore naming conventions. That's complete nonsense Nyttend. The city is not 29,274, the city is 53 km2, the PRC even recognises this. You can't possibly cover that massive area rurally in with the article on a major city. It is very much like saying New York City must contain all the info on New York State. Lhasa (prefecture-level city) does cover both the city and the wider regional area, but Lhasa generally and in the historical sense refers to purely the large town/small city itself. And this is reflected in reliable sources, including most PRC sources. You're obsessed with naming conventions on wikipedia! There's absolutely nothing wrong with providing a general overview in one and a focus on the main urban settlement itself in another, and it makes the most sense from an encyclopedia development viewpoint. It's just not feasible to cover all that mass on rural areas haphazardly in with stuff about the main urban centre. As China develops on wikipedia I'd expect main overview on the regional unit areas and articles on the main urban centres of them with a different focus on each one.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:27, 1 March 2015 (UTC) Any plans on revisiting Lhasa and expanding it? You might be able to better explain the protection given to the Château de Verteuil. It was only partly protected in 1966 (façades, roofs, underground) (see earlier Min of Culture entry - here) The rest was added in 2010 (i.e. the whole of the building itself, the inner court, moats etc) (see here). • I really don't know. It is a private gallery, holds exhibitions, sells stuff. Various artists include an exhibition at the gallery in their list of exhibitions. Questionable sources?

I have some problems with User: Rhode_Island_Red concerning art historical subjects. He admits that he has no knowledge of art historical matters, but constantly places superfluous tags on article pages I have created, questioning the reliability of my sources. See, for instance, [2], [3], [4], [5]). See also [6] and [7]. User Dr. Blofeld recommended asking you what to do. The problem is that the activities of this user haven't changed much for years. Just some examples: Talk:HA_Schult/Archives/2012/August, Talk:HA_Schult/Archives/2012/September, Talk:HA_Schult/Archives/2013/April, and Talk:Gotthard_Graubner. • Some of the tags are daft. I suppose it is valid to object to unsourced material. I would not be nearly as picky about the nature of the sources used unless they are used to support questionable material. I have found blog-type essays that are very good, and scholarly articles with blatant errors. I see he has been reported at ANI a few times: [8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. He seems to like edit wars. It is hard to advise what to do with wikilawyers who like picking fights. They are disruptive in my view, but they usually stay within the rules. Collaboration and brainstorming

Couple of questions for you. First off, would it be all right with you if I edited User:Aymatth2/April 2015 CSD samples and similar future CSD studies in your user space? I would like to add analysis on nomination quality and summary info regarding failure (bad nomination) percentages.

Second, I would like to bounce around ideas you and I might have for addressing the problem, that might not be developed enough for village pump yet. I think the solution to the CSD portion of the problem you have highlighted lies, at least partly, in patroller coaching. Improving patroller accountability was the main reason I created WP:NPPN last year, and I would love to see it get more use. Do you have any ideas for popularizing it? How about ideas for getting away from the "cop" mentality and/or perception of NPP you alluded to at the pump? VQuakr (talk) 01:30, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

• Please feel free to edit User:Aymatth2/April 2015 CSD samples. I think it could use a fair amount of analysis. One issue I am not sure how to address is "velocity". The obviously terrible articles get wiped out fast, and the less obvious ones linger, so any sample has a disproportionate number of borderline cases. Perhaps that does not matter if the issue is treatment of borderline cases. Some of the "blues" look odd to me. Philanthropy Network Service looks like an invented term by an internet start-up, but Vartika Singh (which I expanded a bit) is entirely valid. I had no idea there was this huge Indian beauty contest category, but there it is. The Voice of Peace (marathon) looks like bad faith on one side or the other, maybe both.

I am skeptical about education efforts, although an individualized reach-out might work. There are some very aggressive and immature editors who cannot grasp that their key audience is potential new editors who are much more rational and knowledgeable than they are. They may only respond to threats of being cut off. I am leaving for Costa Rica tomorrow to visit my daughter for a couple of weeks. I am taking my laptop, but based on past experience may find walking on the beach a serious distraction from Wikipedia. I may try to do a summary of the rambling discussion. Enjoy your time away; nearly everything is more important than editing here. I just got back from a quite welcome half week in Vegas.

Competence is required for everything on Wiki, including NPP. I have encountered patrollers who responded well to coaching, and usually the ones who are slow to learn stop voluntarily before a ban is necessary. A ban is a last resort and relatively rare. Patrollers are individuals, and I do not think viewing the problem from an us/them mentality is likely to be successful.

Rework WP:A7

Currently, CSD criterion A7 applies to, an article about a real person, individual animal(s), organization, web content or organized event that does not indicate why its subject is important or significant. This means that an article about a notable subject may be speedily deleted under this criteria, if no version article explains why the subject is significant. If the subject is indeed notable, this is both wasteful and discouraging to new editors. Possible modifications to this policy could include:

• Excepting new articles from this criterion to allow time for development (similar to what is done for A1 and A3).
• Adding a requirement for a good-faith search for sources.
• Automatically moving the article to Draft: space instead of deleting.

Tibetan townships

I can't decide whether or not we should have Township or Town on the end of the names. Nyarixung Township for instance, Nyarixung is also a small town in its own right. I think we'd be best having the plain name to cover both in the same article, but there's lots of inconsistencies and the PRC names officially do include Township on the end. • I would not qualify the name unless a qualifier is needed to distinguish from other meanings. If needed, I would qualify with the name of the province or district that contains it, as with Daxing, Anhui, unless there are two places with the same name in the same district, which seems very unlikely. If the name must be qualified by type of settlement, it should be with the official qualifier. See Townships of the People's Republic of China and Towns of the People's Republic of China. They are both 4th-level administrative units, but the first is more rural and the second more urban. A township could contain a village by the same name, but I doubt that there would ever be a rationale for two articles. Aymatth2 (talk) 19:28, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

Yes I agree, in most cases the "township" happens to be a main village of the same name surrounded by smaller villages/hamlets. Most Chinese township article seem to have "township" included in the title right now, which I think is unnecessary, and I can't find any rationale for that in WP:NC-ZH. We probably should have a discussion to clarify that on the talk page. Many Chinese townships actually have a quite sizeable town (but officially only a "village" or "community" as it's a fifth-level division) at its center, and govern many "administrative villages" in the countryside. Each "administrative village" in turn may contain several "natural villages". Also, most towns are former townships, and became upgraded to "town" status after they reach a certain level of urbanization, or "subdistrict" when they become even more urbanized. • Perhaps the naming conventions should be clarified. The name should be what is commonly used, if possible. Perhaps when a village is surrounded by a township of the same name the common usage is "xxx" and "xxx township". They could usually be covered by an article called "xxx" that describes both. There could be divisions with the same name in different part of the country, like Daxing District and Daxing, Anhui. There could be a well known lake with the same name as a township in the same district. In that case we would have "xxx" disambiguation pointing to "xxx lake" and "xxx township". New page patrolling

Seriously, what do we do about it? I had Nesskip speedy tagged earlier by (one of many) incompetent new page patrollers User:WordSeventeen, which is one of the biggest bulk transporters of Iceland. Then when you approach these people for their incompetence it's either "I'm not hearing you" or they remove your message. How difficult exactly is it for a page patroller to quickly google search and assess before deleting at face value? I'm pretty sure hundreds if not thousands of new notable articles get deleted in this way. We really need to make it compulsory for page patrollers and admins who have the power to delete to check before tagging/deleting.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:10, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

Nesskip credibly indicated the importance or significance of the subject ("it is one of Iceland's largest bulk transporting firms"), so the closing admin would have declined the A7 without even doing a web search. There is consensus that unjustified speedy proposals like this are wrong, but not on what to do about them. I see User:WordSeventeen speedily deleted your comment from his talk page, as he apparently does with any criticism. Perhaps you should have tagged him:

Peanut gallery here, but I agree with Aymatth2 that no process changes are warranted based on this editor's history. It is easy to see that this was a bad CSD nomination solely from the information in the article; no web search is necessary to see that WordSeventeen made a bad call here. Since it wasn't their only crappy recent nom, warn with Template:Speedy-Warn or Template:Uw-hasty and if they continue it probably would be time to escalate to WP:NPP/N. • Volonté means "Will" as in willingness or willpower, so it would appear in different titles. I would translate La volonté de paix as "Will for Peace". A search on "La volonté de paix" vernet gives plenty of hits. I would have been happy to expand the article, but the tag puts me off. I don't like appearing to react. WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

Thank you for your recent articles, including Samuel Tyszelman, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Alarming how many notable articles get deleted by incompetent admins like James086 who deleted top prize winner Une adolescence en Gueldre on grounds that it was a "non notable novel" despite being a top prize winner. They think they're helping the website but are the most dangerous people on here. Can you find anything more on it? I find a fair number of snippets, but it is not an unusual name. There an author and dandy Marcel Jacques Boulenger (1873–1932) who moved in fashionable circles in Paris and London early 20th century, which is where and when the decorator worked. But I am fairly sure they are different people.

He was married and always wore his wedding ring which is not visible in this picture. It looks similar to him but not quite. I can't find the original of the photo to be sure. • I don't know what the right thing is to do. The photo was clearly labeled as "13S-1963-Studebaker-Board-Chairman-Randolph-Guthrie-Closing-Plant-Original-Photo". Possibly it has been flipped left-right for some reason, so the wedding ring would not show. The name tag seems to indicate not, because they are generally on the left side, but that is not always the case. I am inclined to just leave it, unless a better photo shows up. • The source was a press photo being sold on eBay in October 2013. Presumably it has been sold by now or withdrawn from sale, so the picture has been removed from that eBay. • @Azulita: It is hard to tell if the two photos are the same person. My guess is they are, and either the photo was flipped to hide the ring or he had taken it off for some reason. The hairline, cheeks, ears and jowls seem similar, allowing for the difference in expression. But perhaps the photo somehow got mis-labeled and it really is someone else. • I will start Prisse. Don't know about Peellaert. Dutch is not a language I am comfortable with, and it is often easier to start from scratch than to find sources for a wiki translation. It is fairly simple to record what the easily available online sources for the subject say. But there may be no online sources for parts of the wiki translation, which may be wrong, so it can take a lot of effort hunting for stuff that does not exist. Synthesis and the music community article

It's not as simply as just re-arranging text. To make sure that each source is only being used to support claims that source, well, supports (and, critically, only used in the context of a definition that source supports), I'd have to go through all the sources and check them against all their uses and context. That's as much work as just writing a new article de novo (which is why this is a deletion reason in the first place).

If I were going to write this article, which I want to stress I really don't have the time, interest, or source access to do properly, I'd probably break it into three big sections, with Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin's broad definition as part of the introductory material.

• One, for the ethnomusicology uses of the term, which are (per Nettl) actually pretty well-established. Music community in this sense involves practitioners in music, especially in a cultural tradition sense (although you can cite some sources that indicate its not just for traditional music). You've got Nettl here, of course, and Brinner, and J. Burns. Maybe some of the online stuff like Waldron and Williams, too, but I haven't actually gone to those sources to be sure.
• Then, second, you've got the – I want to call it sociomusicology (but since that's technically itself a supercategory of ethnomusicology, I'm not sure that's right) – category that deals with music communities in the consumers-of-music sense (that is, the fans). Shank and Straw and Denzin all go here. A lot of the online content would go here, like Kibby.
• Lastly, the pedagogical use(s) of the term, where a community is formed as part of explicit instruction, especially in the classroom setting. That gets you Colwell & Richardson and Froehlich. And probably the NCME source, although they use an entirely different definition of "music community" in the pedagogical setting, so there's that.

And you'll want to try to dig some more sources, because, presented this way, it would be a very skeletal article based on what you have. Please note, just rearranging the sentences isn't going to get you there, because there really are subtle and pervasive problems with novel synthesis (as another example, the last paragraph of the General section is a problem because you establish a contrast between Smith's definition(s) and the NCME definition, but those aren't really in contrast, because they're never intended to apply the term in the same contexts). My suggestion is to let the current article die, then go back to the sources (and new ones, because you won't be on the AFD clock) and write a new article that keeps diligent watch on the uses of the term as the authors employ them. This is not going to be an easy article to write; broad-topic articles never are. Done well, that's potentially an interesting and informative article. The current one is not. • One added thought: I don't think the online material should be covered separately. It's clear that some, probably all, of these types of music communities have online equivalents. That's how you end up with situations like McCarthy saying that online interaction doesn't serve the purpose of music communities; she's not slagging on stuff like band-fan forums because she's talking about an entirely different sense of the term. In addition to Squeamish Ossifrage's suggestions above: imho the first sentence of this version of the article ("A music community is a group of people who share an interest in a type of music.") doesn't work at all. First, it is obvious nonsense: e.g. people sitting in an opera house attending a performance are "a group of people who share an interest in a type of music" – they're in no way automatically defined as a music community. Second, no social scientist would say something like that. Third, for obvious reasons, it is not supported by the quoted sources. The rest of the lede isn't much better. WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

Thank you for your recent articles, including Francisco Antón, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further.
