Help / Advise needed ...

Hi, I saw a photo of the Instrument of Surrender (1971 Bangladesh Liberation War) being signed on the Jagjit Singh Aurora page ... I think this photo could be included in the Instrument of Surrender (1971) page .... so I posted on the talkpage of Instrument of Surrender (1971) page asking if anyone has any objections to doing so ... but no one has replied ... so I guess it is ok to do so .... Can you please guide me about how to do so or could you do it yourself?

GA Sweeps

Hi Ashlin. Thanks for your interest in the GA sweeps. For this initial sweep, which will be going over all listed GAs (eventually), only experienced reviewers have been invited to participate. WikiProject Lepidoptera - Importance rating guidelines

• AshLin: sorry about being "dense" there—now I get it! Thanks. However, it might need to be made a little more explicit within the table that species may be graded as "high" or "low" only...?

On the issue of "BAP", this stands for "Biodiversity Action Plan", the UK "red data" list. Lepidoptera have rightfully been recognized for their important role as indicator species, espacially vis-à-vis global climate change; hence, the more-than-doubling of lepidopteran BAP species in the 2007 listing. In reality, the conservation bodies wanted to list a whole lot more species, but the government bodies applied strict guidelines (and probably some censurship) with a view to keeping the list to a "managable" number. I think that it is fair to consider all British BAP species as "high priority". Sometime, I'll move on to listing the moths as well. Need your support

Hi AshLin! After I recently fixed up the entire python section, renaming a few articles in the process, I currently find myself in a conflict with someone who seems to be much more WP savvy then his edit history suggests. His problem is that I renamed "Ball Python" to Python regius and he wants it changed back, having requested a move from the administrators and a third opinion. Unfortunately, that last one went badly for me (even though the person liked my reasoning). Therefore, I would be grateful if you could spare a few kind words here in support of my efforts. Looks like we made Jahll1234 angry. He's been busy adding {{Copyedit}} and {{AARTalk}} tags to many of the snake articles, no doubt because he wants us to fall in line with AAR and TOL. Jeez, you stick your head up above the crowd, and they just do their best to cut you back down, since they have no vision themselves. BTW, it was suggested to me earlier that we start up a WP:Snakes (see my talk page). That sounds like a good idea, but if it mostly ends up attracting folks like jhall1448 (he just added himself to AAR) it could end up being more trouble than it's worth. This is constructive obstruction. Nothing to be done unless he goes about undoing edits for which you could take him up. But wikipedia does have rules and guidelines. Why not go with the flow. Why dont you put up a suggested format at WP:AAR for discussion? A common format for snake articles could be evolved? As you are aware Wikipedia requires at least some consensus. Wow, you have gone off the wall. I've been alphabetically adding Quality Ratings to all articles within the WP:AAR scope, because we have nearly 1000 unassessed articles. Every one of the articles I've edited already had the AARTalk template added, I've simply given them importance and quality ratings. The only reason some of those articles were snake articles, is because they happen to start with the letter "A", which I'm working on at the moment. Jwinius, you really need to take a step back and reflect on all of this, as you seem overly insulted by my intent at Ball Python, when in fact, I've done nothing but applaud your efforts (especially you bringing several Stub articles to Start quality).

I've recently made the move to start an Animals Wikiproject (it had been suggested before and didn't go anywhere), and I'd personally like that you both join it (if you're interested). If we have enough people interested, one of the first things I'd like to do is have a common format for naming conventions on articles, and obviously, I'd want a consensus before we departed from WP:TREE. Guidelines and consensus: the Achilles heel of Wikipedia. Everyone with any experience agrees that the WP:TOL guidelines *do not work* on the larger scale, but as long as all that is required to vote in these matters is an opinion, the consensus in any such project will always be to follow them to the letter anyway, at least to begin with. Only when it can be demonstrated how seriously messed up things have become as a result, is there a chance that a majority can be persuaded do anything differently (e.g. WP:Botony).
Snakes are not a particularly popular subject, and thus far I've pretty much done as I pleased. I've always been certain that my decisions regarding naming and layout were correct, while my explanations for doing so, combined with the quality of my work, have apparently been good enough reasons for others to allow me to continue. However, I've always been haunted by the lack of any consensus behind my choices. I hoped that if I worked hard and set a good example, the advantages of my methods would one day become more obvious. I guess not. Jhall1468 (I should be more respectful of him) just doesn't get it, and he's obviously not alone. Like I said to him last on the P. regius talk page, I guess you just have to have tried your hand at organizing this kind of stuff before you can see it, but most people are simply not in that category.
Ash, if this comes to a vote and the core principles behind my methods are rejected, that's the day I quit working here altogether. Tree steps forward, two steps back; what a waste. I've been overworking myself recently, which is probably why I let Jhall1468 get the better of me, but I've also been spending far, far too much of time here during the past 18 months, and it's high time that I paid some attention again to my chosen profession. Eventually, my money will run out and I'd like to complete a rather tricky exam before the end of the year, so either way I need to take some time off from this madness. I'll see you around. Me too. Im in hospital unergoing treatment for CML and I have been taking advantage of the fact that the medical staff do not object to me handling a laptop from my bed. I also have put far too much time into all this. Im now reducing my editing work drastically, espescially as my good nature appears to have been shot to kingdom come. Anyway, WP:OWN is what I seem to violate all the time. But I would advise a break right now. We are not in the frame of mind to discuss anything rationally. My unsolicited advice to you. Take a long break. When you are back, dont edit snake articles, but discuss your methods at WP:Snake/Animals/TOL, wherever. Look for mediation, try to come to a compromise that people will accept and go ahead from there. If you still feel the same way then, leave. But dont take decisions at this time. Wish you a good vacation. And remember, Viperidae is a great piece of work and thats more than most people will ever achieve in WP. What rotten luck; I feel very badly. Life is so coldly random. On the one hand, we're very lucky in that we've both learned enough to marvel at the complexities of life and the universe that we live in, but on the other your predicament reminds me that for us there is no escaping its cruelty either. Of course, we would not otherwise have met and been able to exchange such observations, but still. I hope very much that you are receiving the best medical care available -- you're a good man and you deserve it.

Regarding WP, I was just talking to a friend today about my decision to quite (or at least take a very long sabbatical). He was saying that Wikipedia's is actually an age-old problem of wisdom vs. ignorance, the latter always being more plentiful. For example, if you have a wise man for a dictator, everything is okay until the day an ignorant man takes his place. Likewise, in a democracy all is fine as long as the elected officials are wise, but if ignorant people are elected, terrible things can happen just the same. My feeling is that if WP can never tell wisdom from ignorance among its editors, then the quality of its contents will never increase beyond a certain point. For instance, I could hang around here for the rest of my life in order to uphold the quality of the articles I've worked on (if this is what you mean by violating WP:OWN, then I'm guilty for sure), but when I'm gone, what then? If there's no one to take my place, others may be able to recognize and revert simple vandalism, but beyond that a steady decline seems inevitable. It's as if WP was built using unstable proto-matter. ;-)

I hope these depressing thoughts don't put any more of a damper on your own wiki experience, since you've also put in some serious work that you can be proud of. On the bright side, I will never consider the time I've spent here as a complete waste; I think I've improved my communications skills in general, met some very interesting people, and developed a new understanding and appreciation for the scientific method.

Given that I can't make the time to work on my "pet" topics (including Steenbok), it would seem a bit too adventurous to suggest that I champion the British butterfly species across Wikipedia, even though there are only 59 regulars. I am a writer and editor by profession, so I could cast an eye over any rough text anyone can throw in...

• I come from a conventional science publishing background and am more comfortable with the Harvard referencing system than using footnotes. I was already "tricked" into changing the Steenbok article into the latter format, but was obviously delighted to learn that either is within Wikipedia style conventions. I'll stick with Harvard if it's OK with you...
• Re images: I am a very visual person when it comes to wildlife, so I like to see as many images as possible of the creature I'm interested in. If this is considered somehow unprofessional or perhaps untidy, I will swap out the Gallery for a cross-reference to the WikiCommons page for the species—please advise.
• I'll make a mental note to include "interesting" behaviour under a "Habits" heading, but I am using a reference in which such information is included (at least in part) under life-cyle, so I followed suit in this case.
• Thanks again for the encouragement. We'll see how the UK butterflies project grows.

Dear AshLin: I hope the above comments did not sound (or rather read) in any way critical of your advice. If they did/do, please accept my apologies. Having worked in cross-cultural situations for much of my career, I have come to the decision that straight and to the point is best, but I may be guilty of insufficiently expressing gratitude by doing so. Yes, I can see your point about images, and did not check back to the version of the specified article of which you were critical. That said, my comment/offer still holds: if you as an apparently "leading light" in Project Lepidoptera see the use of large galleries of images as excessive, I think a link to the species page in WikiCommons would actually work quite well. This might even be an issue on which we could formulate some Project Lepidoptera style policy... I also read somewhere about the dearth of images. I would love to help out, but I seem to be one of the few Brit lepidopterists who doesn't have a digital camera with decent macro facilities. I have recently used my old SLR with macro doubler. I am particularly hopeful that pictures of Vapourer female, mating pair, egg-laying and eggs turn out well—we shall see! Anyway, keep up the good work—GRM 16:18, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Personal opinions

Hi Ash! It's not been more than two weeks since I've started editing again and I just can't seem to keep out of trouble. I'm afraid it's the pythons again. With them being so popular as pets all around the world, I suppose it's no surprise as to the kind of people these articles attract. Perhaps I should never have ventured beyond Viperidae, but take a look at this conversation: User talk:Viridae#Morelia_spilota. He may be an administrator, but that's not stopping him from forcing his own opinion on everyone else here. From the looks of his talk page, he's not always been that popular here in his official capacity either. I find myself in an unusual position here, being hotter headed and much more uncouth than you are at times! However, I shall still venture forth where angels fear to tread to advise you, as a friend. Jaap, cool down and think about it. In a totally open society (WP) which has evolved to encourage contribution by a great diversity of people, anything except an outright violation of MOS or WP tenets is game. Like my edit of common names, you will have to learn to live with many things which you dont like. I let my edit go so that you could have your way. You had a good faith way of doing things and I was convinced that this was ultimately in the best interest of wikis which I care about. But everyone wont do that and they will stand their ground and defend it ferociously especially if you start handing out statements about their attitude, learning capacity or what have you. In effect, in WIKIPEDIA, you cant decide on a 'correct style ' and defend it to the point that you immediately revert good faith edits AND expect people to believe that you are right and they are wrong! All you will get is unnecessary aggression and heartburn!

My best wikifriend Shyamal feels, style is a subsidiary issue to content and no way is he going to allow his emotions to prevent himself from the important covenant that he has taken upon himself of bringing Indian nature to the people of the world. In my civilisation, there is a concept of 'maya' that the world is illusory; none of it is real. In such a case, attaching importance to material goods, or even intellectual goods is futile and will bring you not happiness but pain. As Gautam Buddha said, we can be free from pain, only when we give up attachment. I'm pained to see that you persist in remaining attached to your concepts even after the wikibreak. To misquote another, I looked at the enemy and he is us!

So, Let it go! Let it all go! I could tell you, that if its so important to, put time in between your activities, add a lot of content while undoing a particular edit so that its lost in the clutter; but I wont! You are the cause of your own unhappiness, and only when you realise it, you can move ahead in life and proceed onto a course of action which will keep you sane and polite and bring you happiness from Wikipedia instead of the unhappiness as of now! Photo correction for promethea silkmoth...

I posted a photo of a promethea silkmoth which was apparently misidentified. The photo was reviewed closely and is actually a photo of a tuliptree moth. So... I'm going to attempt to "undo" the edits on that page affecting that photo. I noticed that you had also made alterations to the page since the photo was updated. The process of undo-ing the photo modification may mean that you will have to re-apply the last edit you performed. A comparison of your last edit with the previous version of the page shows that you edited lines 18 and 42.

GA Sweeps update

This is a form message being sent out to all of the GA sweeps reviewers. Thank you for all of your dedicated work in the difficult and time-consuming task of ensuring the quality of articles within the GA project. Many reviewers have taken time out of reviewing articles at WP:GAN (this may be one factor in the expansion of the backlog), writing articles, and probably getting some sleep! I have sent this message out to update you on our current progress and to remind you to please keep up with completing your reviews and updating GARs/holds. As of March 1, 2008, we have swept 20% of the 2,808 GAs we started with. At our current progress, all of the articles will be assessed in just under three years (based on when we started). If we want to complete the sweeps sooner, we need to continue reviewing at a higher rate (consider doing one or two more reviews a week or whatever you feel comfortable with) and inviting new, experienced reviewers. If you are taking a break, focusing on GAN, writing your own GAs, or are already reviewing articles like crazy, I still want to thank you for all of your hard work and hope you are pleased about our current progress. Why India?

Hallo AshLin! First, I want to express my sincere admiration as to your many contributions to the Wikipedian butterfly articles! You have done a great work indeed!

But do you have a special reason for adding the List of butterflies of India article to the see also section (while the species, genus or even family is not endemic or otherwise mostly Indian)? It just leaves a false impression to the reader that the subject of the article would be somehow more associated with India, rather than Great Britain, China, or say, Poland? Ornithoptera croesus

Greetings Ashlin, I got the chance to do some more studio shots of butterflies.Here is one result- Ornithoptera croesus (taxobox), a truly astounding insect.('The beauty and brilliancy of this insect are indescribable, and none but a naturalist can understand the intense excitement I experienced when I at length captured it. On taking it out of my net and opening the glorious wings, my heart began to beat violently, the blood rushed to my head, and I felt much more like fainting than I have done when in apprehension of immediate death. I had a headache the rest of the day, so great was the excitement produced by what will appear to most people a very inadequate cause' Alfred Russel Wallace The Malay Archipelago (1869)).More photos soon, I go around 100 shots altogether and a lot more with my tiny Ricoh.I will do my best to find some of the butterflies in your poem, if not freinds will help I trust. Project News Tag & Assess 2008, an assessment drive initiated by the assessment department began on June 7, 2008 and will be running until July 2008. Many Wikipedians have started contributing to this mammoth task. This housekeeping activity will help manage articles in better way. You can also get involved! Bot Assisted Assessment was successfully done using Bot0612 in May 2008. 1744 articles (18.5%) of all India unassessed articles were marked if they had been assessed by some other project. What's Featured and Good? Five new articles were promoted to featured article status in 2008: Western Chalukya architecture, 2007 Samjhauta Express bombings, Akhtar Hameed Khan, Preity Zinta, Kannada literature in the Vijayanagara Empire. Two new lists were given featured list status in 2008: List of international cricket centuries by Sachin Tendulkar, List of Victoria Cross recipients by nationality. There is currently one Indian article as a featured article nominee. Two more articles, (Bengali language, Kazi Nazrul Islam) are undergoing featured article reviews. You could help save these two articles by leaving your comments or assisting the involved editors. Three articles are undergoing good article nominations: Anekantavada, A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and Santosh Subramaniam. IPL was hot on Wikipedia too!!! During the tournament, the article was among the most frequently edited articles. It is currently the only Indian article in top 100, occupying 58th spot. Do you know of an article that is currently underrated? Hi Ash! Would you perhaps have a moment to support me in my efforts to fix up the Boidae section? No real work; just a mention of your support for moving a few articles there to their scientific names. After that, I'll take care of the rest. Hi, Thats what we appear to have got into. I don't think Wikipedia will go anywhere great because everyone here is basically unconvincable (including me). Thats why democracies don't work too well either. Why not try to use redirects and proper names together for a small subfamily to get a hang of the problems first hand - it may be possible to device some kind of via media as a not so good but acceptable solution.

I believe Churchill once said, "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." I've been reminded, though, on more than one occasion that Wikipedia is not a democracy: we do things here by consensus. Unfortunately, the folks who uphold the consensus at issue are anything but well informed.

There's no need for any such experimentation: plenty of that has already been done before, so there's no need to question whether it's possible to work this way. The real question is, once I'm finished with about 3,000 such articles (all with common name titles) and have disappeared for good, How easy will it be for another person, also knowledgeable in this area, to verify that it is indeed properly organized and pick up where I left off? Answer: It won't be.

That's because, even if taxonomic lists, such as List of viperine species and subspecies, remain the same, there's no guarantee that, years later, the redirects for these links will still lead to articles that describe the same speciess. To make sure, you'd have to follow each link and check each article, adding both to your watchlist to make sure neither gets changed later on.

But, I've explained this before. Really, the people behind the current consensus don't care whether the scientific name is this or that; all they want to see is an article with a common name title. They don't care if this causes long-term taxonomic maintenance problems for Wikipedia, because that's something they are incapable of understanding anyway.

Ash, as you can imagine, I've spent a lot of time -- too much time -- contributing to Wikipedia during the last few years. But even if the guidelines and policies were perfect, the articles we write are never going to be any better than the people who maintain them. That makes me feel like I've been writing in the sand. The actual guidelines and policies just make things worse. The pin-headed administrators who stop by every once in a while to remind me of these rules make me feel depressed. I'm tired and frustrated and I'm just not having as much fun anymore. Perhaps it's time for another wikibreak -- a really long one this time. I need to get my IT career back on track anyway. Kargil War

I am glad you are turning your attention to this article. I had suggested a featured article review when I found so much of the article based on contemporary news reports, which have subsequently proved to be wrong. Since you seem to be knowledgeable about the topic, I would encourage you to focus on the "facts" in the article and the citations supporting them. In particular, I would like to see more citations to books like Gen. Malik's recent work on the Kargil War instead of old news reports. This article also begs for better maps to explain the locations and difficulties of battle. Unfortunately, even Gen. Malik's book didn't have very good visual help for the reader. Please pass on the request to any contacts you have that could help with visual aids. You may also want to spend some time on the order of battle articles that have just been started.
