Wikimedia NYC invites you to attend a Wiki Loves Pride Edit-a-thon on Thursday, July 12th at Jefferson Market Library! Wiki Loves Pride is a global campaign to expand and improve LGBT-related content across all Wikimedia projects, in all languages. We are holding this year's event in July in order to support folx who want to contribute a photograph they took at one of NYC's many Pride events or edit an article about something they learned this June. Translations and pictures
Most of the top brass of Wikimedia New York City are in Columbus, Ohio for a Wiki Conference this weekend, so response might be slow. Being too tired to be out getting drunk & disorderly at the after-conference parties, I can give a quick answer. @Doctorxgc: is pretty much the best we've got for wp:translation or at least she's the one on my mind because I saw her just a couple hours ago. Read that page about translations, and then you can ask better questions. I'll be one of the last to return to NYC but most of us will be at Wednesday's monthly meetup in Brooklyn, see Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/October 2018. We will have much to discuss with the big group, but if you can show up early, some of us will be ready to talk more personally. Or stay late.
Oh. Silly me; I have long known how to find uploaded pictures, but I forgot. It was this one, and a smaller one which has already been posted in the biography. I shall categorize them; that's a somewhat complex matter which you should learn if you're going to upload more pictures. I hope we'll see you Wednesday evening. Jim.henderson (talk)
thanks for following-up! I can't make the meeting this Wednesday but would be happy to learn about how to categorize photos at a future meeting.
Coming up soon: I'm co-leading a 75-minute workshop on basic Wikipedia editing at the annual conference of the American Literary Translator Association (weekend of Nov. 1), during which I'll go over Visual editing and ways to improve existing articles by adding citations and links and copy-editing. The skill level of those attending is a big unknown. It's a closed conference with a registration fee; if not I would have invited local Wikipedians in the Indiana University-Bloomington community to join us at the workshop.
We won't focus on translating articles per se at the workshop, but thanks for the recommendation! I will get in contact with Doctorxgc and go one of the Translate-a-thons she runs at LaGuardia Community College to get some hands-on experience and help. I just enabled the Beta translation feature on Wikipedia but didn't get far with an article on a Spanish woman writer I tried to translate from Spanish to English. If you want, we can meet before that for a coffee or something and I can give you the basics of translating and then you can visit for the translatathon or participate remotely. Thanks! Yes, let's meet when it's convenient, no rush, even over the semester break. I'd like to learn to translate existing articles into English, just as a starting point, to add to or enhance. I'm focusing my Wikipedia efforts on expanding the number of articles on international women writers and women translators.
Will do. Let's communicate a bit later in the semester, but take into account BMCC finishes earlier than LAGCC. I checked your profile and one of the things you can work on in the meantime is to edit more on the English WP. Specifically, to use the Translation Tool to translate INTO the English WP you need to have a bit more of a presence: "The Content Translation tool may be used to facilitate the translation process. This tool is currently limited to extended confirmed editors (those with 30 days tenure and at least 500 edits). The community is actively developing a process whereby trusted editors will be able to gain access to this tool. Please see more information at Wikipedia:Content translation tool." Hello Doctorxgc! Just checking in to say hi and I'm still interested in learning more about the translation function on Wikipedia (for my own use and to be used in my classes at BMCC). There was a recent entry on the Wikimedia Foundation blog on the content translation tool, announcing that it has integrated Google Translate.
Unfortunately I haven't been editing much lately so my number of edits hasn't increased much--but I will start working on that again! My focus has been on improving the presence of international women writers and women translators on Wikipedia.
If you have any news or reactions to the integration of Google Translate, please let me know, and would still love to meet you (though maybe your classes have started, as mine are next week). Artatra (talk) 17:17, 21 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City.
New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events.

The Wikipedia Asian Month Edit-a-thon @ The Met will be hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Saturday November 16, 2019 in the Bonnie Sacerdote Classroom, Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education (81st Street entrance) at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York City.
The museum is excited to work with Wikipedia Asian Month for the potential to seed new articles about Asian artworks, artwork types, and art traditions, from any part of Asia. These can be illustrated with thousands of its recently-released images of public domain artworks available for Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons from the museum’s collection spanning 5,000 years of art. The event is an opportunity for Wikimedia communities to engage The Met's diverse Asian collections onsite and remotely. Asia Art Archive will host a sister event in Hong Kong next week.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

The LuEsther T. Mertz Library of the New York Botanical Garden and the Environment of New York City Task Force invite the general public of all experience levels to come to the Mertz Library in person and learn how to use Wikipedia! All skill levels welcome at the event! Experienced Wikipedia editors from the Wikimedia New York City chapter will be in attendance and available to help. A one hour training session will be offered at the start of this event covering introductory topics. Attendees familiar with editing Wikipedia can edit off of a worklist focused on the environment of New York City; as well as, a sub-list focused on the environment of the Bronx. You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our Hacking Sunday at Prime Produce in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan. A documentary filmmaker will be in attendance, working on Rabbit Hole, which aims to document Wikipedia's community to showcase how our network tackles important questions about how history is recorded. They will be in attendance to film snippets of this gathering for the documentary. It is completely optional to be a part of the film and there will be protocols in place if you wish to not be filmed. You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for the "Editing to the Beat" event of the beginner-focused Wikicurious series at Lehman College. This is the second event of the series, following the inaugural event at Civic Hall in July. Led by a 9-person live band demonstrating Caribbean and Latin musical genres, we'll engage with efforts such as WikiProject Latin Music, and will encourage editing on both English and Spanish Wikipedia. All are welcome, and newcomers and aspiring editors are especially encouraged to attend. Registration via Eventbrite is required for building entry, and is also encouraged on the event page on Meta.

You are also invited to Wikicurious: Capturing the Moment, the third event of the beginner-focused Wikicurious series, at Jefferson Market Library on Tuesday, November 26, in collaboration with WikiPortraits and AfroCROWD. All are welcome to attend, especially those interested in photography or contributing to Wikimedia Commons. We will explore the art of capturing the moment through photography and learn the basics of Wikimedia Commons, and (weather-permitting) we are also planning a photo walk, so bring your camera (or use your smartphone)!
Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
The special focus this year will be the launch of our "400 Neighborhoods" campaign for the city's 400th anniversary and WikiProject New York City/400 Task Force.
We'll also have a lightning talks session and you're invited to sign up for one, though space is somewhat limited.
