Wikipedia as source

Hi, and thanks for your many outstanding DYK contributions! One word of advice: you should not cite other Wikipedia articles as inline sources. That's because we're supposed to cite only reliable sources, and Wikipedia is not a reliable source: it's user-edited, it changes all the time, and it's a tertiary source (an encyclopedia). What you should do is provide an internal (dark blue) link to the other Wikipedia article in the text, and cite its (reliable, primary or secondary) sources where appropriate and available. In cases of foreign-language Wikipedia articles, you can also add a reference like "parts of this article were translated from the German Wikipedia article on ... [link]." In reply to your question, the above is quite right. Citing another Wikipedia article as your source is the same as not citing at all. The other article should provide references that should provide whatever information you wish to cite in your article. If those sources don't exist or don't provide the information you wish to include then that illustrates very clearly why you shouldn't cite an article in another article. If they do exist and do provide the information you wish to cite then we end up with two well-cited articles using reliable sources that have been checked at least twice. It could be tempting to reference another article when it references a book that you can't obtain, but while that is unfortunate, it isn't an excuse to skip the task of checking the facts. In reply to your reply, no problem. No matter what novel technique you may use, Wikipedia articles may not be cited as sources because they are not reliable sources. The correct way to refer to other articles is through internal links (see also templates such as {{main}}) and through interwiki links, as suggested below, but these are navigational aids, not sources. I've noted this problem with respect to your articles at T:TDYK, so you may want to clean them up or they may not be featured on the main page. Hi, to break into this conversation, the easiest way to fix up your (or others') articles that cite other wikipedia articles is just to delete the citations. WP:ATT makes it clear that although all material should be attributable, it need not actually be attributed. If there is material likely to be challenged, then you could add {{fact}} if you are unable to find a source yourself. Of course, if you have a source that mentions it (including a foreign-language source), you can add that citation; many articles on foreign wikipedias (though lamentably not all) will list their sources, which you can cite directly. Hi, I saw on User:Zanorath's talk page that you have advised him to use {{Template:PD-self}} on software screenshots. However, software screenshots cannot be claimed as own work as the copyright is owned by the company that develops the software. Software screenshots are covered by fair use (see WP:FU#Images), as such {{Template:PD-self}} or {{Template:GFDL}} or similar free license tags cannot be used. What happens is sort of like this:

1. Someone comes and nominates an article.
2. People look at this article, and based on notability or interest, they support it.
3. Every 4 votes, the overdue date is extended by a week or so.
4. If not enough votes have been attained to keep an article from being overdue, then it is removed.
5. If it manages to gain the highest votes and stay above the overdue limit, then it is selected to become the new collaboration. Each collab starts on a Wednesday and ends on the next.

Lucien Quélet

Hi Anonymous Dissident. You had said that the cited reference mentioned that Quélet's theory "was contrary to Charles Darwin."

The reference I was referring to was the cited one, which is this. The word "Darwin" does not occur anywhere in the text of this page, so I'm not sure quite what you mean here. Could you clarify? Thanks, --Saforrest 00:09, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Further to this, the closest thing I can find on the cited page to a view on evolution is this:

"En effet, Fries, comme tous ses devanciers et contemporains, avait établi sa classification à rebours de l’évolution, c’est-à-dire que l’ordre dans lequel il avait rangé les espèces partait des plus évoluées pour aboutir aux plus primitives."

Here is a rough translation

"In effect, Fries, like all his predecessors and contemporaries, had established the classication along the wrong evolutionary direction, that is to say the order in which he arranged species went from the most advanced to the most primitive."

I really don't quite know how to properly interpret this sentence, but it seems to purely about taxonomy. Drawing any conclusions from this statement about evolution itself does not seem warranted. --Saforrest 00:18, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Egyptian birds

I've just noticed you've started List of Egyptian birds. I've created List of birds of Egypt as I was using the data as test data and created a lot of bird lists as a result. It doesn't matter, you can use it as source data or merge the two: just put a redirect in for whichever title doesn't survive (and add your page to the Category: Regional bird lists so it can be found.) I'll leave it up to you. I'm running a script that takes the lists from Clements' and formats them for wikipedia, and Egypt was one of my test countries. I've adopted the format "List of birds of x" as more use that formula than "List of xian birds" (I copied the Cuba title from Puerto Rico, but I'll move it once the FLC process is finished), and now I've done that there are 60 odd more using that title, and there will be another 60 or so coming over the next few days. Do whatever you like with my Egyptian list: the only reason I put it in was yours wasn't listed in the category I was checking against, so I didn't notice it until I was looking at a "What links here" on a bird species. If you want to wait for a few weeks I can add some more stuff in on the relationship to The Enraged Musician and probably some history on the plates and states (A reference needed for "a comic scene of a violinist driven to distraction by the noise from the street outside his practice room"? On second thoughts, I won't bother - I've never been interested in GA and I lost interest in FA some time ago. If you do need anything in that article citing to get it through GA I can cite it all, but I don't think there is anything in there that is "likely to be challenged" (unless adopting the "the sky is blue"^citation needed approach). G'day

G'day esteemed person who has expressed interest in Sydney based meetups at this page (I hope that's the correct wording for the formal greeting!!). You may have heard that Australia is to have its very own 'chapter' of the Wikimedia Foundation - and further, there's a meeting coming up to discuss / enact the chapter's incorporation (details here). I'm afraid that I don't know too much about the details of what this entails, other than having a private hope that we might get a secret handshake, and maybe cheap coffee at wikimania (this is a poor attempt at humour - I'm sure that the Chapter's do great work, and it's a good thing that Australia is to have one).

Hey Anonymous Dissident, I just came across this template that you created back in August. It doesn't seem to be in use anymore, so I listed it at Category:Deprecated DYK templates; is this ok? I don't plan on TfDing it or anything because, even if it's not being used, I don't see any harm in keeping it sitting around (for example, if there is a renewed interest sometime in the future to use a template like this, rather than the various versions of {{DYKtick}} used now). What do you think to a move to The Covent-Garden Journal? The hyphen, although not current practice for Covent Garden, seems to be in the original title and most of the literature and avoids a mismatch between quoted works and our rendering, as well as the clash should we ever have an article on the 19th century publication of the same name. Look at the extracts Ottava placed on the talk page; most use Covent-Garden, plus most of contemporaneous writing I've seen uses it hyphenated (as does the title page of The Covent Garden Tragedy). When the hyphen dropped out of favour I don't know (The Covent Garden Journal of 1810 doesn't use it, though that may have been a minor nod to differentiate it from its predecessor), but I suspect The Covent Garden Journal for Fielding's work is a rendering modernised by the authors. I don't have any burning desire to see it moved, but it might make for a tidier article if you include any of the extracts from the talk page. Yomangani^talk 10:54, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the sources do seem to use a hyphen in "Covent-Garden", but also for "Great-Britain", "Pall-Mall" and "Ingram-Court". Surely that was just prevailing practice at the time? If so, ought we adopt it? We would not move Great Britain to Great-Britain, or Pall Mall to Pall-Mall. (Thoroughfares later lost their hyphen and gained a capital letter - "Bow-street" and "Harrow-road" became "Bow Street" and "Harrow Road" - although the roads in these sources seem to have their majuscule already).

Or perhaps "Covent-Garden" is hyphenated because it is used as an adjective?

Also compare, for example, The Grub-Street Opera and The Covent-Garden Tragedy.

My preference is for the hyphen (in all these cases), as we aren't talking about titles still in daily use that have evolved away from the hyphenated form as with Great Britain or even Covent Garden. We don't normally adjust titles of works for modern usage (except, I suppose, when we can't understand the archaic title). I personally avoid thinking about FAC while under 20k, but with the above plan it will be over 20k in size. If moving to FAC, I would have to look through some more articles and add some other stuff, possibly various critical commentary on the Journal and its impact, which would be another section (possibly over 25k in size). My personal library on Fielding is limited to about 40 books, of which half deal with his plays. I know where to look to find the information, however, so it shouldn't be a problem. For every category you create, you should specify parent categories to which it belongs. You can do this by listing the parents near the bottom of the page, each enclosed in double brackets like so:

On a related note, do you know why I was still seeing the cached version of articles that had this error (articles that had an edit after your first edit but not after your reversion) even though in my preferences I enabled the option to disable page caching? Right, if you use the purge action as WP:Purge explains that fixed this problem if you were still seeing it. My question is I disabled page caching in my preferences but I was still seeing this error, even though the purge action got rid of it, so it seems the disabling isn't working or something. Purging your cache allows everything on your page and everything related to it (ie. called templates) to be refreshed, with regard to each other. If you purge, the problem should go away. There are a few issues with the hooks in queue 6: 1) The (pictured) in the second hook shouldn't be there; 2) In the third hook, Palestinian is a disambiguation link; I think Palestine is better. While you're at the queue, there are two more tweaks: 3) In the credits, the two with "Nocturnes Op. 27" should be changed to "Nocturnes Op. 27 (Chopin)"; 4) There should be a nbsp within "100 years" . Problem with usurp

I would have done this via the email this user feature, but this seems to be the only choice (see below). I cannot log in under my new username, 2, I get this error message:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:(SQL query hidden) from within function "User::saveSettings". MySQL returned error "1062: Duplicate entry 'Mr Senseless' for key 2 (10.0.6.22)".

All of my contributions and userspace transferred over without any problems it seems like, but I think what happened was I was editing at midnight (UTC), and the usurpation without my knowledge and some residual edits still under Mr Senseless occured after the changeover (I didn't realize this until I looked in my contributions and found them all gone.) I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, although my old account Mr Senseless was shortly blocked thereafter for sockpuppetry with email disabled (thus why I didn't email), I'm assuming under the rightful fear of it being compromised. Note about renaming

This is just a reminder. Remember after usurping to delete any resultant redirects from the usurped name. For example, before the request to rename Mr Senseless to 2 was complete, User talk:2 was created. When you renamed User:2 to User:2 (usurped), moving the talk page creates a redirect to User talk:2 (usurped). The redirect must be deleted for the usurper's user talk to be moved correctly. I wanted to bring this to your attention. User was blocked for a promotion name. The user wants to change their name. I think it would probably be best if the user just created a new account or the such (unless they would have their block logged marked). I know that you are a new Crat, and that there other Crats are around this talk page. I hope someone can talk with them and find a solution. I would hate to have someone who appears to be a decent user turned off so quickly. Their only edit was this, so I don't see any spam. I created an account, Socks 01 on September 10 2006. In late 2007 I wanted to change my name to Wwesocks so I created a new account, not realising that you can change your username. Is it possible that you could maybe merge Socks 01 with Wwesocks? Then my edits before December 2007 will be in Wwesocks contributions. Also that would mean that my account, Wwesocks would show up as being created in September 2006, just like when you rename an account. This would be really appreciated if possible. Renaming on wikispecies

I have made renaming requests on the projects on which I have made at least one contribution. Otherwise, it would a bit overwhelming (by automatically logging in, I have created the account on about 222 projects of the Foundation, 43 only of which have contributions). My previous username is locked on these projects, and as soon as I log on them with my new username, a new one will automatically be created. Therefore, I do not see why it would be necessary. I didn't mean to come off dismissive or anything, I'm glad you didn't take offense. Personally I feel like renames should mostly be processed and discretion should be rarely used when the reason is something sort of odd or vague ("I like this better" and that type of thing). We want to make processes as easy for users as possible, and stopping everyone who wants a real name is another example of clogging it up and slowing it down. I've moved it. AD, remember when usurping to delete any redirects to the usurped name. For example, in this case you should have deleted the redirect you created to User talk:MC10 (usurped) on User talk:MC10 after the usurp because renaming does not override the old page. SU(3)s

Hi, some clarification: When you talk about quarks, there are two SU(3)s. One is a global SU(3) that is used for classifying quarks according to flavour - at least as long as you look only at u, d and s quarks. For these quarks, you get, for instance, baryons in the 8-dimensional adjoint representation (N, P, Sigma, Lambda, Xi) and mesons in another octet. This is the eight-fold way stuff. In Gell-Mann's classification "very strong interactions" do not break the SU(3), "medium-strong interactions" do.

All this works as elementary group theory: for instance, baryons have three quarks, and if you "multiply" the basic representation (3) three times, you get a sum of representations: 10 plus 8 plus 8 plus 1.

The colour SU(3) is something completely different. Here, the quarks are again elementary, and the adjoint representation is what the 8 gluons are in. This symmetry is local, and it's used to construct the gauge theory.

So yes, I mean the section needs a complete re-write. It's about color charge, so it should recount the basic properties of the colour SU(3). The statements in the same paragraph that, instead, describe to the flavour SU(3) (Gell-Mann and Ne'eman, baryon decuplets and octets) should go into a different section, namely one about quark flavours. (The section where the isospin is explained - cf. my other comment!) The current version conflates the two different SU(3)s, which is just wrong. First of all, "Sal is indeed great" it irrelevant; and, "his notability is tied completely to the academy" is untrue. He has 3 degrees from MIT and an MBA from Harvard. He has served as a pundit at least 3 times for a major news agency (CNN and two others that I'm only 95% certain of) giving analysis of various bailout plans. He has been an independent subject of a BBC special on learning and he has been an independent subject on local & state media (california news programs). I am a retired wikipedian and have full understanding of WP:NOTE. Unless you object, I plan to remove the merge tags which you inadequately put on the pages. If you check your edits to both pages, only one of the tags links to the relevant discussion (which is more of a sentence than a discussion). It really upsets people who have worked on the pages to see an admin slap on a tag which if you used more time and more thought, you would realize that it was probably an unfortunate error. Wiki-drama gets started by things such as this. If you don't object, I plan to remove the tag later this month and try to throw up a few references & citations supporting Sal Khan's independent notability. For example, on March 26th 2010, he was the subject of a piece called "making a difference" which is a local/state reliable source. I am a college student and I still rely heavily on Wikipedia to supplement my learning; so, please forgive me if I still make a few compulsive edits. Bureaucrat, eh? I thought you were just an admin. This was probably just a careless edit. If you trust my integrity, I'll just remove the tags in a day or two. Sal is definitely notable, although it obviously puts the burden of proof on others by making them back it up with refs/cites and I'm lazy. Without the refs/cites, and if you are not from US, then how are you to know he is notable if the people of the page don't establish notability? It's a catch 22 because, lol, I don't actually want to start adding sources to a page if I am supposedly retired. Anyways, the cliffnotes version of this TL;DR is that it sucks being a bureaucrat because it sucks caring about Wikipedia; and, hopefully all bureaucrats care about wikipedia. I trust the RFB process as I have monitored a couple admins who I direly opposed. (Oh! In fact, you opposed him too at his RFB in 2009!) Obviously, I don't want to out his name; but, you need all the moral support you can get to avoid burnout. Good luck in your WP endeavors. It takes a certain type of tenacity best summed up by Theodore Roosevelt:

"It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. It certainly takes a unique trait which I can't really put my finger on. I'm a thriving student who is en route to going to a pretty decent med school in a couple years. It's kinda weird how you can be a great doctor, great lawyer, or great whatever; but, some people just don't have what it takes to survive the insane dynamics of Wikipedia. I personally blame it on being a guy. Wikipedia is more of an art rather than a science, and it is more of a social experiment rather than an internet encyclopedia, hehe... /rant. Having degrees is not sufficient for notability, and nor is serving as a pundit on the news. Everything else you cite ('independent subject of a BBC special on learning ... the subject of a piece called "making a difference" ') relates directly to his involvement with the Khan Academy. Thus, I reject your claim that Khan possesses independent notability, and my objection to his biography remains. As is only proper, I will not execute the merge in the absence of consensus; and, for similar reasons, I ask that you do not remove the merge proposal. • Here it says "Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention but it need not be the main topic of the source material." and I perused that page in great detail before I made my first post. Additionally, the stuff about CNN and MIT enhances the acceptability of Salman Khan's notability. (see the top of the WP:NOTE page again where it says "Determining notability does not necessarily depend on things like fame, importance, or the popularity of a topic—although those may enhance the acceptability of a subject that meets the guidelines explained below.") I am not trying to be nitpicky--just trying to point out that he is not an average Joe to begin with. If he was merely an outside consultant to Khan Academy rather than its creator, he still garners coverage about him the individual. Khan academy acts as a "attention beacon" toward Salman Khan; and, I would agree with you that Salman Khan would most likely not be notable if it weren't for his creation of Khan Academy. Margaret Mitchell would not have been notable if she didn't write gone with the wind. What I am asking you is do we both agree that Salman Khan must surpass his own notability threshold? I believe Salman Khan is notable (my subjective opinion) however I believe that he objectively meets the general notability guidelines as I have again carefully examined the WP:NOTE page and still respectfully disagree. The BBC special on learning coupled with a couple of lesser state/local sources (e.g. newspaper, magazine, web-news) that give him more than a passing blurb should clearly suffice for his notability.
• Secondly, when you made this edit, the tag does not link to a discussion. It reduces half of the possible traffic because you created two tags where editors/readers should be directed to a discussion. (In fact, neither tag links to "the discussion" when you click (discuss) on either tag.)
• In summary, I don't think there is any point of taking this discussion to either page. Nobody has said anything since you put the tags up in March. You and me are probably the only ones interested in the merge-or-separate debate. I have looked at both articles; and, I believe that the suggested merge is grudgingly acceptable. Sorry that you had to deal with a perfectionist. In a few days, I'll personally merge the articles myself and incorporate Salman Khan (educator) into Khan Academy. I think I cared more about being right than I cared about Wikipedia. It's embarrassing for me to confess that my ego is attached to my anon IP address! I used to think my problem with Wikipedia was that I cared about what everyone else thought of me (i.e. wanted my username to reflect who I am in the meatworld). At least I learned a lesson from this--I really thought I knew the reason I quit wikipedia but I guess the reason was more complicated. There is a very puzzling (at least to me) statement in it - that a commander [Lange] lost the command because he "lost the boat", but another commander then took over the boat. This goes back (though the exact wording has changed) to your original creation. Could you take a look and clarify?
