Barnstars

While I realize that I have currently been awarding many barnstars, all of them have been through WP:AWC, which I currently run. Generally speaking, I award one barnstar per task. It just so happens that I post the vast majority of tasks on WP:AWC and as such I end up awarding the most barnstars. I understand that I have a troubled past regarding that issue, but unfortunately this is a responsibility that was thrown at me after User:The_Transhumanist took his wikihiatus. I have asked other Wikipedians to help me with the project (including MFC), but as of yet I can't find anyone to help. If you wish to help, I would be incredibly grateful, as managing the entire project myself has become a timesink and prevents me from my other Wiki-duties. Hey there. I've been working a bit on the 4X strategy game genre article. I really don't deserve much credit, though -- I've mostly been referencing what's already there and cleaning it up. I was hoping you could participate in the peer review of the article. I expect/hope at least one other person will chime in. But either way, I would like to get at least two opinions on the article, to have an idea on how to best move forward. Do what you can, at your leisure... This is your friendly reminder for a peer review :) Let me know what you think of 4X. Anything you can offer is helpful. Particularly on the kinds of things that help a B-status article reach GA.

One quick request that would help the article the most: I already know there's a lot of original research. A peer review from last year said that, and the article has come a long way since then. There's still some ways to go, so saying that there's too much original research is already kind of obvious. But if you do focus on WP:OR, the most helpful thing you can do is help create a mandate for fixing specific sections. In particular, the "Technology Tree" (s2.5), and "Constraints" (s2.9) have been huge headaches. If you can get specific about the OR, then editors trying to weed out OR could point to specific things we need to do, and use that to justify big edits. The hardest thing to do in wikipedia is explain why true information should be deleted, due to a lack of references. Randomran (talk) 00:15, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for your attention so far. When you talk about reducing use of examples (e.g.: "such and such game is a good example of this") the more specific you can be the better. Not for my sake, but for the sake of all the other editors. So far, editors have been eager to re-instate and add as many examples as possible. If you want to say "almost all the examples are unnecessary and should be removed", please say that. Or if there are specific sections where it doesn't help, please point that out. The Picture of Germanicus Caeser on the Vandalism Page.

You wouldn't happen to know anything more about that picture would you? As in, did the artist who put the cross in the center of the fore-head also snub out the nose? Was it vandalised by more than one person/groups of people? Did you take the picture yourself? I only ask because the cross clearly was placed with care, while it looks like someone dragged the bust across a rock-face to degrade the nose. Thank you! Hi, I was wondering what your opinion would be on an article "History of timekeeping devices in Egypt". Question on IP block

I have a question. You told me on MSN that we shouldn't block IPs indefinetely. What if that IP is obviously sockpuppeting (as in the case of Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Community service)? Indef block or leave it alone? OhanaUnited^Talk page 20:17, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

IPs should only be blocked indefinitely if they are open proxies, or completely static. There's the issue that IPs blocked indefinitely may switch to a different owner. Best just to block it for a few months or something. Majorly (talk) 20:34, 5 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks. The reason I asked about this is because in some game forums, I blocked some troublemakers with IPs from Singapore. Turns out Singapore only has a few ISP. The IP range is narrow and every time you click a new page, the IP changes. That's why I wasn't sure what to do with dynamic IPs when they're used by vandals. Project news Elections are now taking place for coordinators of the project for the next six months. Any editors interested in seeking a coordinator position, or who want a say in who is selected, should indicate as much here. Member news The project has currently 381 members, 69 joined & 0 leavers since the start of March 2008. Other news The project's long-time lead coordinator, Kevinalewis, has announced he is not standing as a candidate for another term in that capacity. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to him for the extraordinary work he has done for this project. To Kill a Mockingbird and El Señor Presidente were both recently promoted to Featured Article status. This brings the novel FA count to 14! It has been suggested that WikiProject Sword of Truth be merged into WP:NOVELS, perhaps as a task force. Task force news The Shannara WikiProject was merged into the project as the Shannara task force. Anyone who can help would be appreciated. Two inactive projects were converted into task forces, so Chronicles of Narnia task force and Lemony Snicket task force have been created. People interested in the aforementioned subjects are encouraged to support the new task forces. (Thank to Wassupwestcoast for the tip) Novel related news The science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke died on 19 March aged 90. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz won both the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for 2007. 4X

Hi, no offense meant but I've just undone your recent edit of the intro to 4X. Your text was "Many typical features of 4X games have been implemented in computer games since the 1970s, and even board games have had them." In normal English usage "Many typical features of 4X games have been implemented ..." implies that 4X games came first and other games copied features from them, because a perfect tense following a set of statements in the past tense normally describes subsequent or even consequent events - yes, the sentence continues "... since the 1970s", but that makes the sentence change meaning halfway through, which will give readers a jolt and may confuse some. "... even board games have had them" makes the similarities between some board games and many 4X games seem like a coincidence, when in fact fact it's a causal link from board games to 4X games. My text which I've reinstated is "Many typical features of 4X games had appeared earlier, in board games and in 1970s computer games." This states the main point up front, that 4X games were not the first to have the features now associated with 4X. I've used the pluperfect tense because the preceding paragraphs establish 2 reference dates well back in the past (Civ in 1991, MoO and the coining of "4X" in 1993) and in that situation the pluperfect is correct. If you think readers won't understand the use of the pluperfect, I'd be happy with ""Many typical features of 4X games appeared earlier, ...." (simple past tense). As I said, no offence meant, and I look forward to seeing your other edits (I know that a few days / weeks later when I re-read what I've written, I often want to re-phrase). I'm sorry but I dont' think your edits to "Long playing times are entirely an improvement:

• The change from "... take multiple sessions over multiple days, while multiplayer matches can take much longer" to "... take multiple sessions over multiple days, while multiplayer matches longer, still" just doesn't work for me.
• The change from "... one does not expect serious warfare before about turn 110" to "... one should not expect major war campaigns before about turn 110" is OK as English but I think is more likely to mislead. The actual words of the article cited are "In a large universe, given the extra distance, you should expect at least one enemy Battleship to attack you by turn 110 (turn 80 given a convenient wormhole). You can often be hit by three or more battleships by turn 120." I admit I was paraphrasing heavily, in order not to confuse readers with specifc details of MoO2 (wormholes; the fact that a battleship usually has the firepower to destroy a starbase sinlge-handed, while smaller ships do not). But 1 battleship doesn't constitute a campaign, although 3 might if they're advanced enough. It might be a good idea for us to discuss the best way to summarise what the cited article says without distracting readers from the 4X genre by adding MoO2-specific terms.
• The change from "... "beer-and-pretzels" games that one expects to complete in a single session" to "... "beer-and-pretzels" games that one completes in a single session" might be taken to imply that "beer-and-pretzels" games require completion in 1 session, e.g. because you can't save games. How are you?

Good I hope. I am requesting to have the Rollback permission replaced on my account. I was unaware of the indepthness of the issue that I was getting into yesterday. The admin who took action yesterday and removed from my account is unavaliable at this time, and has stated that I may reapply for use of the tool again. Recent message to me regarding Spoilers

Hi, just read your message about the change I made to the BioShock page where I put a line in explaining about the Spoilers. I run my own Xbox 360 website and get asked about information on various games an I normally ask them to Wiki said game, I have recently had some people coming to me telling me that the game BioShock has now been severely spoiled due to the Wiki Page so I checked it out for myself. In the Story Section I expected to read a synopsis or just a brief explanation on the game (ie story information you would probably find in the user manual of the game itself) only to have the full game also spoiled for me too (I've not completed the game yet...now I don't have to!!! grrr.). The Wiki story section going into incredible detail about who the character really is, who he's related to, all the story twists and the complete ending.

Its just like telling someone who's never seen Star Wars that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father, or that GlaDos (famous AI from Portal) is really trying to kill you etc.

Thats is the only reason I added that warning.

I closed this TfD as speedy keep. So I went to remove the TfD notice in {{Chinese}}. Even though I removed the tag already, the same notice is still visible in documentation section. Ureliable source

Hi, I wander how did you determine that the book Помаците и торбешите в Мизия, Тракия и Македония by Хюсеин Мехмед is unreliable? Even well known Bulgarian authors as Petar Yapov give it a credit. Of course you don't know that because you haven't even read the intro which was actually written by that author, but you could immediately determine that the book is not a reliable source. Even though it was printed in 2007 and is the newest book regarding the topic and even though it gives 521 references and cites 104 sources. As of now it is the best research dedicated on the Pomaks and even the Bulgarian Helsinki Committe regards it as a very important work that fills a great gap of the history of the Pomaks [1]. --Chech Explorer (talk) 12:17, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
