iPod / iTunes Connectivity critizism section

In the iPod article, until recently there was a new section within "Critizism" which featured the restrictions Apple is imposing on the newest iPod models so they can't sync with any more with third-party software. You said on 11:27, 16 September 2007 that you edited it out because it was "already mentioned in article" -- but it isn't. You said before at 19:43, 15 September 2007, you reverted "all of today's nonsense", and asked ironically if "Apple deliberately changed the format to screw over all 0.01% of users who use their iPods with Linux???" -- But whats at stake here is no nonsense at all. It affects more than just the (certainly more than 0.01%) people who use iPods with Linux. It is a deliberate move by Apple towards a harsh lock-in strategy on their iTunes line. Fair use

There are many articles without an infobox image because nobody has found a free alternative. Wasn't there one of Singer at Comic-Con ages ago? Alientraveller 20:36, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Fact is, we can have the picture, but not in the infobox, if you just want to show his appearance. Fair use needs to illustrate something specific, like his Trek fandom, but there is a free-alternative for his appearance. Alientraveller 20:48, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

This is how I've had it explained. Don't have an infobox image then if you haven't got a free alternative, and wait for an opportune moment, like a kind editor, or the US government's public domain works. GNU/Linux userbox deletion

I've just noticed the GNU/Linux userbox has been deleted and removed from my page. I've just had a scan through the archived discussion to see why. It seems you instigated the deletion, apologies if I am mistaken.

This caused me to think a little about why I had that userbox in the first place. The term "GNU/Linux" is used to describe the combination of GNU software and the Linux kernel, with the suggestion that the combined whole is an "Operating System". Linux is a kernel which is a component of an Operating System (I do not see many people disagreeing with this). "GNU software" is more wide-ranging in terms of designation. "Linux" is commonly used to describe Linux-kernel-based operating systems a whole, which is what has upset the GNU people enough to suggest "GNU/Linux" instead.

As it happens, my OS of choice is Debian, or "Debian GNU/Linux". Faced with my missing GNU/Linux userbox, I have the option of adding a GNU userbox and a Linux one. However, I've come to decide that GNU/Linux is an equally insufficient name for my OS as Linux is, since both are parts that do not sum to the whole. XYplorer AfD courtesy blanking.

Three things:

1. Please remember our policy of Assuming good faith. Undoing an edit and calling it vandalism, when it has already been explained, is rude, and goes against AGF and WP:CIV.
2. Please inform yourself better. Blanking is not equal to vandalism. Courtesy blanking is fully supported by Jimbo when it could cause hard feelings
3. Given the post on the HD, it obviously hurt to have the deletion up. Thus, a courtesy blanking was suitable.

In the future, please refrain from calling other editors vandals without a very good reason. Civility is important to Wikipedia's survival, blanket accusations do not help us --L^augh! 20:32, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Not Vandalism

Read that article in the link I posted the third paragraph under the picture "Making a new XNA game" it's says "For this tutorial start with the Windows Game project. Once you have selected it you can immediately run the project and see a wonderful cornflower blue, blank screen. (It is widely speculated that cornflower blue is Tom Miller's favorite color)." Expose comparison to flip 3d

Time Machine critique of Leopard

Thanks for the edits on Leopard. I reverted this change, though: it eliminated sourced criticisms of Leopard in the mainstream trade press, as well as a valuable fact (Time Machine backups aren't bootable) which can be sourced further than the Super Duper guy. Super Duper is also very notable; a conflict between the most notable third party backup vendor and Apple is a valuable and interesting item.

On balance I agree with you, but I think the fix is to balance the text of the critique with the counterarguments, not to strip the original critiques out of the article.

Ah, read some comments on this page. Other editors appear to have raised similar concerns with your edits to DNS Software Comparison article. You did in fact remove few notable entries from the Remote Desktop software article. All in all - lists and comparison tables fall into a gray area of WP policies. What you consider a valid removal reason may not be how other editors interpret the same policy. Therefore, as a courtesy to other editors, please consider first discussing your tentative changes on Talk pages. The way you had phrased it implied that the lack of notability followed from the lack of article. Moreover, the reverse is often also not a case (due to the article itself being non-notable and a candidate for AfD). Here, see for yourself - LogMeIn vs GoToMyPC. The same goes for CrossLoop, which scores 10 times more hits than Remote Graphics Software. My point is that a cleanup based on a formal criteria, without considering a context or a background, is quite often overly destructive as it trims useful content. Therefore it does not hurt to talk about it first. Removing the content is easy, restoring it - is not. Alex Pankratov (talk) 01:16, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Redlinks vs. external links vs. plaintext

Sorry you're being forced to spend time on the DNS article.

I have a guideline-y question: you've redlinked the NN DNS servers in the article. Dns9900 wants them externally linked. I don't like either approach, because I don't like the idea of baiting people into creating pages for marginally notable software. Is there a problem with simply not linking stuff?

Thanks for the response. Submitted for your consideration: we will not like the outcome of baiting people into writing articles about these products. Many of them are marginally notable at best, but shipped by companies with 2-3 trade press stories. My (brief) experience with the AfD log tells me they'd survive AfD: how do AfD voters judge a real story from one planted by PR? So now we have 10 new WP articles, all hard to delete, all magnets for COI edits and POV disputes (we already had a nasty one between MaraDNS and Djbdns, and they're OSS!). I propose we simply de-link things that aren't notable enough to have articles, and settle the WP:NNC arguments on a case-by-case basis. About WP:COI and MaraDNS

Here me out: I'm frustrated with the discussion in MaraDNS. Look at the talk page. Read it from top to bottom. Here is what you will observe:

• In 2005 I had the exact same concerns that you had about editing the article. So I got permission on the talk page to edit the article.

• In 2007, there was son controversey about some of my edits, so people brought out WP:COI. Why wasn't this is problem in 2005? Why is this a problem in 2007?

Let me give you a silly example of an argument in that particular pissing contest: Someone pointed out that MaraDNS was not notable because the Wikipedia page is the second Google hit. Well, that makes BIND non-notable, because if you do an Google search for BIND, the second Google hit is, well, the Wikipedia BIND article (which I also contributed to, mainly because I don't think it's fair that DjbDNS has a much bigger article). So, yeah, it became a pissing contest, and it got a little ugly. So I stepped back and decided to make MaraDNS a better DNS server instead of wasting my time in the Wikipedia for a couple of months.

And, yes, I had COI concerns in 2005. I still have those concerns in 2007, which is why I'm not editing that article.

Now, let me tell you why Wikipedia sucks. It sucks because there are just too many pissing contests here. People--not just me--but many people are disgusted with the community at Wikipedia. Cite Cite2. Now, I think it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. I think the solution is to have a less open process. For example, with MaraDNS, while I accept many patches from many sources, I am the ultimate arbitrator of what gets in to the code (so we don't get silly things like the RA bit set in the non-recursive build of MaraDNS, just to give an example of a patch I made today). I think there should be a software development style process, where "stable" versions of pages can only be edited by admins, but any user can edit the "CVS" version of an article, which won't become the main article until it goes through some review process.

Maybe even have a "CVS section" that will have a zillion little artcles about trivial things, like MaraDNS, like Secession (band), like Empire of Atlantium, and so on. There should by no VFD allowed for these articles; but there can be a lot of debate about what articles become "stable" Wikipedia articles. This way, instead of people getting upset because, say, their Webcomic was deleted, we can say "Of course we have a page about it in the CVS wikipedia. Good luck getting it in mainline".

I think Wikipedia is too big for just any user to be able to edit just any page. I also don't think VFD serves any real purpose, nor do "But it's not notable enough" flame wars.

Anyway, MaraDNS is getting better. I'm finally rewriting the recursive code, and should have something ready for general consumption next year sometime (I already have some code that would be very useful in, say, a WiFi router). I have also gotten private emails about people who want to write about MaraDNS in their book; I will let you know when that is published.

Now, when the new code is written, I don't think it will be particularily fair to users to read outdated information on the Wikipedia. Which is why I'm asking you to make contributions to the article when MaraDNS gets updated. Don't just bully other editors around. Contribute. Make Wikipedia a better place. Apple Bias

Please stop threatening me with permanent blocking just because I apparently insulted you. I contacted an administrator and they are investigating the privileges you are claiming to be able to use. Last time I checked, you cannot get banned from editing because you disagree with someone on the talk page of a product.

I look at your history of edits and much of it has to do with removing criticism from Apple. I did not mean to insult you but to refute your bias. Maybe I have an anti-Apple bias, but I own four of their products. Essentially, I don't want to turn this into a personal issue, so please stop threatening my account with admin priviledges you don't have.

Well to be fair, it wasn't a forum post. I've seen people use Macrumours.com articles before as sources at Wikipedia. Furthermore, the Wikipedia reference I used has more than 60 references and to include them all would be overwhelming. I didn't realize we couldn't use Wikipedia articles for reference, so I added some direct links to iTunes and Apple TV version history from their website.Chrisjustinparr (talk) 22:35, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
