Teaneck and demographics

Did you write "With almost no land left to develop for housing, Teaneck's population is likely to remain stable for the foreseeable future. A reluctance to permit high-rise development as a means to increase population density also places a limit on growth. Changes in family size are one of the few influences that may affect population over time?" This holds true for Teaneck, but it also holds true for Hackensack, which has an even slower population growth (0.9% since 2000). Also, it is a little misleading because it makes Teaneck sound like a 200,000 people city, not a 50,000 people suburb. Both Teaneck and Hackensack are quite built up, but the dominant cover in both Hackensack and Teaneck is vegetation (look at Google Earth, Wiki Mapia etc.). Here's a possible definition of small city: A city with vegetation, not buildings, being its dominant cover." Both Hackensack and Teaneck are correctly described like that and will probably both fit that rule forever. They both have under 50,000 people, which is another definition of small city. Hackensack and Teaneck will probably fit that definition forever. For a small city such as Teaneck or Hackensack that will probably have a <50,000 population and be dominately covered by vegetation forever, it is misleading to say "Almost no land left to develop for housing," as it potrays an image of a place like New York City. Opening Day Starting Pitcher Lists

I've been trying to add final scores to the Opening Day Starting Pitcher lists I have been working on, most recently List of Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Opening Day starting pitchers, following your lead from List of Washington Nationals Opening Day starting pitchers. But I am running into a sorting problem. Scores that start with a 10 or above are coming out between 1 and 2 when I sort. I think I used the same syntax as you did for List of Washington Nationals Opening Day starting pitchers, but it doesn't seem to work for me. Do you know what I could be doing wrong? Thanks. Fairmont prep academy

My goal is to add clarification to the "awards and recognition" part of the article. the article is written as if a school can only win the award once because there is a large gap of time between when it was won (about 17yrs ago) and today. Incivility

I'm troubled by your continued incivility at CFD. It is not uncommon for you to have difficulty remaining civil and assuming good faith with those who disagree with you in that forum, particularly with User:Kbdank71. I'd appreciate your thoughts on why those comments do not merit a block per your editing restrictions. Postdlf (talk) 05:50, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

After Kbdank71 advocated a point of view that reliable sources can be ignored as "opinion pieces" and using this as justification at both CfD and DRV, I investigated policy and received four separate opinions from four separate editors at WT:RS and WP:RSN that indicated that this interpretation is false. I attempted to share this information with Kbdank71 and had him blow off any further discussion in insulting fashion. Now Kbdank71 has resorted to mimicry to make his misinterpretation of policy into a joke. I'm sure that you recognize that admins have a responsibility for enforcing policy AND for demonstrating appropriate behavior. Ihave already attempted to address these issues using Wikipedia's conflict resolution procesures and my offers to resolve this issue with Kbdank71 have been rebuffed. I appreciate your concerns and will make a greater effort to respond to Kbdank71 with the same level of civility that I hope for. There are a lot of strong personalities on Wikipedia, and we all have the potential to goad one another, and we all could do a better job of helping others understand our positions by explaining them rather than just asserting them. But ultimately we can only be responsible for ourselves, what we choose to say, and how we choose to say it. The key point for you to remember is that when you are in a disagreement, the other party believes you are the one misinterpreting policy or facts, and we all have to accept that at the end of the day, we may not persuade anyone else that our view is correct. Assuming good faith means that we should do just that—assume that what you believe to be an incorrect interpretation is nevertheless an interpretation held in good faith. I believe your comments crossed the line into outright hostility, and the next time I observe this from you I will block you in accordance with your editing restrictions. But I appreciate your response here and willingness to discuss these concerns with me, which gives me some hope going forward that the acrimony can be reduced. While any attorney will insist that the other side is misinterpreting policy or facts, I solicited independent opinions on the issue and received four separate opinions at WT:RS and WP:RSN all of which clearly contradict Kbdank71's interpretation of policy. Kbdank71 has refused to pursue a definitive resolution on this matter, and your assistance in seeing that this matter is addressed in appropriate fashion would only help clarify this issue. I think you've confused this CFD discussion with Kbdank71 with other discussions you've had with Jc37, on the issue of whether the reliable sources you cited refuted his arguments that certain fictional character categories depended upon OR; here your response seems like a complete nonsequitor. I've noticed you in heated arguments at CFD with no fewer than three contributors recently, and these arguments all seem to get personal. Perhaps it's best to take a break for awhile from CFD? I've seen your participation at CfD, and while I have both agreed and disagreed with your positions, your analysis and insight is orders of magnitude above the doctrinaire approach of other editors at CfD. I understand that the objective of many editors is to push me out of CfD. No one owns CfD. I certainly don't. I will continue to temper my words and focus on logic and Wikipedia policy issues, not personalities, as I have already done. However, my determination to be heard on these issues is not going away. I will be happy to leave CfD and work full time on all of the other things I already do when CfD is working properly. No one can ever accuse me of having too much of a focus on CfD, unlike other editors there who live exclusively in a rather blinkered category world. You ought to have a gander at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2008_October_29#People_buried_in_Abney_Park_Cemetery and explain who is the person here who has civility issues, and who is someone who might benefit far more from a conversation about behavior. I already have his talk page on my watchlist. If you can point to what aspects of my comments justify statements that I involve myself in "bullshit ephemera", that I engage in my "typical distortions", and that "I can feel free to continue coming off like an ass", I will try even harder to understand why I am wrong here. Other than that, it appears that rather shameless personal attacks are being ignored, in direct violation of WP:NPA. If you want to act as an honest broker, and it appears that you are trying to do so in good faith, there are other parties that you have failed to reach out to. Alansohn has been performing yeoman's work almost single-handedly pushing back against a group of admins who have been deleting every cat in sight without adequate consensus and against policy. (I'm just an IP without an editor account and even *I've* noticed this.) His push back has been met with virulent resistance and harassment, and that he is occasionally baited into incivility, while certainly not laudable, is nevertheless understandable. Woodland Park

Hey Alansohn, if you get a chance, could you swing by Woodland Park, New Jersey and give a hand with changing it over from West Paterson to Woodland Park? West Paterson/Woodland Park

Thanks for the note. As you couldn't find anything saying that the name change has officially happened already, I've moved the article back to West Paterson and restored that name in the body of the article. Watch out for the edits of Beholdkingjames, who has several times introduced copyvios, and changed even past references to Woodland Park (for example, saying that the 2000 census demonstrated certain things about Woodland Park, when it should say West Paterson), in case you don't already know that :-) Nyttend (talk) 23:40, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I do have a question. You said "Any article that is in Category:Irish-American politicians is already part of Category:Irish-Americans which is a parent category." But, for Instance, If I search for John P. Daley (who is an Irish American) on the Category:Irish-Americans page I won't find him because he is only listed as an Irish-America politican and not an Irish-American. In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, finalize and approve bylaws, interact with representatives from the Software Freedom Law Center, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the June meeting's minutes and the September meeting's minutes).

We'll also review our recent Wikis Take Manhattan event, and make preparations for our exciting successor Wikipedia Loves Art! bonanza, being planned with the Brooklyn Museum for February.

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.

Ok I understand what your saying, however, the information included is not promotional, no more than that of the only included arts center SOPAC, whose very nature is FOR PROFIT, further more, I followed there reference links and it takes you to their page and the information is copied and pasted from their page. How is that ok but what I have done not OK? please explain that. I have attempted to right it my owns before only to have it taken by you last week, and because it wasn't referenced or cited and you said it wasn't in my own words, WHICH IT WAS. how do you write in your own words and then cite that exact wordage with out it being copyright infringement. I see you have a log list of edits, why don't you add the correct info then since it seems to be conveniently omitted from the arts section as well as local government section. How are we to include the pertinent info w/o being considered a COI or promotion when the only ARTS mentioned is a SHAMELESS promotion of a for profit organization? How is that fair. how is their (SOPAC) information encyclopedic and ours not? This is the first time am having to do this and I am EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED! If you look through this article,and that for other schools and places in New Jersey, you'll see that the overwhelming majority of such entries are accompanied by a reliable source establishing their connection to the school / place. Local color articles and other biographical coverage will often focus on schools, so it should come up somewhere. David P. Levin (and Teaneck)

Thank you so much for your feedback. Am new to this and appreciate any criticism...

I understand the difficulty with imdb, and will only use them as a tertiary source in the future, except for filmographies.

Just for clarification. I changed the name in the article from "Route 4" because I felt it was not specific enough. Did it denote a county road? A federal route? I know that the locals in Teaneck refer to it as "Route 4" (having been raised there), but thought the more specific would be preferable.

I will endeavor to get links to Mr. Levin's birthplace (which I got off of imdb), as well. One question, can citations be to published works (e.g. books, newspapers) rather than to online links?

GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation

Demolished buildings and structures in Chicago, Illinois

Thanks for your work on this category; I wasted a ton of time cleaning up after Coffee's rampage, both undeleting categories and reverting category removals. However, I question the need for the category; see Category:Former buildings and structures in Chicago, Illinois. Do you believe that there's a big enough difference between "Demolished buildings" and "Former buildings" that both are needed? Or do you think, as I do, that they're close enough that we don't need both of them? Nyttend (talk) 13:38, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

• @Nyttend: Thanks for doing all of that work and for reaching out to me. I can't think of any meaningful difference between a former building and a demolished building, and I see no reason that the two could not be merged. Other than it being demolished, why else would a building be a former building? As to the deletions, the worst part of the whole situation is that User:Coffee truly believed that by wiping out thousands of edits and categories that he was making the encyclopedia better, when in reality almost each and every one of his systematic deletions were making it worse. We do need far better methods to keep sockpuppets away, but the manner in which this incident was dealt with was dead wrong. Coffee kept on referring to the quaint essay WP:DENY, while the relevant policy WP:BAN is rather clear that the correct approach to such a scenario is to evaluate the situation and see what can be kept and what must be deleted. As I had stated when this was going on, if a serial killer / heart surgeon had done a transplant on your child and then been convicted of murder, I might approve of giving the doctor the death penalty but summarily removing the heart from the patient seems somewhat wrong. I think that you're at the tail end of your efforts with this set of deletions, but please let me know if I can help with anything. Alansohn (talk) 16:13, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

• I think the issue is the method of becoming "former", e.g. the Crystal Palace probably wouldn't be put in "demolished" because it burned instead of being taken down intentionally. Meanwhile, I've not done anything on this in a couple of weeks; it was 8 or 9 December when I was going around cleaning up the mess. This is why I supported the WT:CSD proposal to exempt a populated category from CSD#G5, which already doesn't permit the deletion of transcluded templates. • Agreed. Same with the World Trade Center. All demolished buildings are former buildings, but all former buildings were not demolished, as they may have been destroyed by fire, earthquake, collapse, terrorist actions or some other process other than their deliberate demolishing. I think it's probably more meaningful to use former buildings as the general container. The majority of former buildings will probably have been demolished, but it might be useful to group buildings that no longer exist because they were destroyed in some unplanned manner / act of God based on the manner in which they were destroyed. Renaming categories

Greetings, would you happen to know how to rename categories, such as Category:Mount Laurel Township, New Jersey to Category:Mount Laurel, New Jersey and also Category:Mount Holly Township, New Jersey to Category:Mount Holly, New Jersey, without the word Townships. I was bold and moved Mount Laurel Township to just Mount Laurel, since it is commonly known by that name, similar to Mount Holly, Cherry Hill, Medford, North Bergen, Weehawken, and several other townships. See WP:CFR for details about speedy renaming, where matching the title of a renamed article is an available option. For every Mount Holly, Cherry Hill, Medford, North Bergen, Weehawken without the "township" in the title I could point to a Washington Township (pick one), Chester Township, Old Bridge Township or Woodbridge Township where it should be included. Wikipedia allows one to be bold, but I'd suggest that all of the ramifications of the overall issue be addressed first, especially as the overwhelming majority of these articles have had stable names since they were first created and the rename does little to improve the article while creating additional issues of renaming associated categories, template entries, etc. There is an ongoing discussion at WT:NJ regarding the potential renaming of township articles and I encourage your participation and input so that this can be settled on a more global basis, rather than one article at a time. Ben Wallace

Ben Wallace pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge of drunken driving and possessing a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and received one year probation and no jail time. The sources in the article say this. The category label is not a good one, but shouldn't some type of category be applied?Hoops gza (talk) 21:27, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

Flag icons on municipality pages

Just wondering, are you implementing flag icons on all NJ municipality pages for the US, as well as NJ flags? I noticed all Bergen County towns have them. • Someone made the change to add the flag icons on articles for Gloucester County municipalities and I liked the look, so I've been spreading it around as edit other municipal articles. The URL template also helps with longer URLs, but the formatting seems neater. None of these are required anywhere, and I wouldn't edit any articles solely for that purpose, but that's just me. Galloway Township, NJ

I am writing you for the 500th time to request that you stop your unnecessary edits to my additions to the Galloway Township, NJ article page that are based on whzt you feel is relevant and what is not. We spoke months ago and agreed to the following consensus:

1. That the population trends would be permitted to remain in the introduction paragraph as per your wishes. 2. That the fact how Galloway Township is the largest municipality in the State of New Jersey would be worded the way you wanted it. 3. That the Deputy Mayor would be added and REMAIN in the infobox. 4. That the Township Manager's date of service would REMAIN next to the current manager's name in the infobox.

You agreed to this consensus and I have it in writing. However, you have turned around and deleted the final two points mentioned above.

The Deputy Mayor is an extremely relevant fact to place in the infobox. Why? Because in the particular case of Galloway Township, the deputy mayor performs numerous functions. He presides in the absence of the mayor at council meetings. The deputy mayor is charged with heading several committees and subcommittees. The deputy mayor in Galloway Township also signs all financial documents with the mayor. Your claim that the deputy mayor "have no governmental function whatsoever" is therefore grossly incorrect.

I greatly appreciate your inputs to the article. However, I do not appreciate how you constantly change others solely on the fact that you do not agree or feel that it is not relevant to the article. You also have numerous sources whose links to articles no longer exist or can be accessed. I have attempted to delete links that are broken or no longer valid, however you always reinsert them. There are numerous pieces of content that I feel are irrelevant that you have added throughout the article. However, I have not edited or deleted them. I request that you recognize the fact that all content and information, regardless of whether you agree with or feel it is relevant to the article or not, is permitted to be added and remain in the article.

Please respond to any questions or concerns in regards to this post by posting on the article's talk page.

We are having the same problem with shifting categories into areas that do not make sense in California too. It is not just your state that is being rearranged counter to the system which makes sense. I have also left that editor a note on his/her user page. Cheers! • Sometimes, it seems to me, there are editors who have a fetish for categorization and recategorization, taking articles that they know little or nothing about and adding, updating and removing categories that too often make no sense. when complaints are raised by locals more familiar with the issue, the response is that we fail to see the bigger picture. The problem is that there is no bigger picture and the failure to reach out to local editors and collaborate creates giant problems.   • Read this article for some background on the use of "Jew" as a pejorative. You might be able in some limited contexts to say someone "is a Jew" and get away with it, but when you use "Jew" as an adjective in "Jew-tagging" you cross a line into Jew-baiting. User:AndyTheGrump has repeatedly emphasized that he was trying to provoke Bus stop into filing an ANI and the use of rather clear racist code words appears to be part of his incitement. I'm not sure that AndyTheGrump is an anti-Semite, nor have I made that claim, but his use of anti-Semitic code words appears to be intentionally used as a slur.       • My use of the term "anti-Semitic rant" means using offensive anti-Semitic slurs. That standard has been met. There is a difference between saying that someone "uses anti-Semitic code words repeatedly in a provocative tone" and that someone "is an anti-Semite". Alansohn, your lack of awareness of the meaning and function of Wikipedia terminology such as "Jew-tagging" (a neologism analogous to "NPOV-tagging" or "civility-tagging") is leading you astray. I won't try to explain it again, since nobody else seems to be getting through. I see in the thread above that you make a fine-drawn distinction between accusing someone of being an anti-semite and accusing them of acting like an anti-semite (= for instance, of "going on an antisemitic rant" and "using anti-semitic slurs"). But that distinction is null, since it goes without saying that you don't have access to Andy's opinions and emotions and aren't commenting on the inside of his head, but on his actions. It's all any of us can do when talking about other people. It's unconscionable to baselessly accuse an editor of antisemitic behaviour and, as recently, of "using thinly veiled racist language" and "persistent use of thinly disguised racist rhetoric",[1] and it needs to stop. If you talk like that again, in any venue, I won't hesitate to block you for persistent personal attacks. Your safest course might be to avoid mentioning (or indirectly referring) to AndyTheGrump again at all, since you can't seem to do it without such attacks, but that's up to you. WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

• 12george1 (submissions) and TropicalAnalystwx13 (submissions) were the first people to score, for the good article Tropical Storm Bret (1981) and its good article review respectively. 12george1 was also the first person to score in 2012 and 2013.
• Sven Manguard (submissions) scored the first ITN points for 2014 North American polar vortex.
• WonderBoy1998 (submissions) scored points for an early good topic, finishing off Wikipedia:Featured topics/She Wolf.
• TheAustinMan (submissions) scored the first bonus points of the competition, for his work on Typhoon Vera.
• Igordebraga (submissions) has scored the highest number of bonus points for a single article, for the high-importance Jurassic Park (film).

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

I thought it would be helpful to begin a business section so if people are looking at the page for more information about what is in the town. I did a search of companies in Bay Head and thought I would try to pick a variety of different types of businesses. One of our fundamental principles is that Wikipedia is not a directory. It's not intended to provide a cross section of profiles of various businesses in the community. What might be appropriate for inclusion in the article are specific businesses that have their own Wikipedia articles or if there are businesses that have received broad coverage in reliable and verifiable sources such as newspapers, but that does not seem to be the case here. Hoboken High School

The "net effect" of the edit was not to change citation formats. The primary rationale for it was to revert addition of unsourced content and removal of valid content without a stated rationale/edit summary. Of secondary importance were the reversion of violations of WP:SEASON, WP:PAIC and WP:EL, which can clearly be seen by looking at the diff, by reading my edit summary, and/or by reading my message to User:98.109.145.86. Yes, alteration to the citations was one of these secondary aspects of the edit. I changed "Accessed" to "Retrieved" and placed publication dates after the authors because that's how that information is displayed when templates are used, so I figured that that is the correct or predominant way that info should be displayed (and not because of any personal preference on my part as you accused me previously; I used to use "Accessed" when I thought that was the proper term, and only changed it when I noticed the templates did not employ it). Although I don't have time to convert the citations to template form today, I intend to eventually, bu displaying the info that way, it appears identical to how it would appear once that conversion takes place. As far as WP:CITEVAR, I figured I was the primary contributor to that article, though looking through the edit history, I see that you have more edits to it than I do. Would you prefer I convert the citations now to template form, or just revert the citation info to the previous formats? Nightscream (talk) 05:28, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

File deletion issue

I had contacted User:Mark Arsten regarding his deletion of File:New Jersey Dry Town Listing.pdf. He said he would look into it on his talk page. When I went to follow up on his talk page and clicked on the image again, I saw that he had restored it, hadn't told me that he restored it, he had the image nominated for deletion (without notifying anyone) and then the discussion was closed as delete (and deleted) by you based on one incorrect vote. This is not a government document, it is a copy of a government document for which it is unclear that there is any copyright issue whatsoever. NFCC#3 doesn't apply based on minimal usage, nor does 7 (it is referenced in multiple articles), 8 (it's used as the only available source from the state) or 9 (it's used only in article space). Without the image the information is unverifiable in any way as the material is unpublished by the State of New Jersey. May I ask you to reconsider your deletion of the image once and for all. I deleted this as there were two on the delete side, Mark Arsten and Stefan2. At this point the pdf was marked as non-free and was orphaned. I can see a checkered history for the file with mine the 4th deletion it's suffered. I'm not sure if it is copyrighted but I suspect that it might be as copyright law is replete with oddness. NFCC#7&9 are the biggest problem as it has to be shown in an article, not just referenced, and I can't see that this has happened. It's like a book or other text that is referenced here and we don't host copies of those. As to the inaccessability, either the information is published and hence can be relied on or it's not and probably can't. The small information that is referenced from this (two articles use to to state the number of dry places covered) is adequately covered by accessable online sources like (this and this) which makes it also an NFCC#1, and given the material covered NFCC#8, issue. I'm not sure where Stefan2 was going with the NFCC#3 issue but there appear enough problems that I can't see it should be here. If it's freely licenced though it obviously can be, but personally I'd never use this as a reference as there is no provenance and it's an unpublished primary source. Drawing from this source that x towns where dry strikes me as original research, particularly as the PDF states "WE CANNOT VOUCH FOR ITS ACCURACY". - Peripitus (Talk) 05:36, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

1. Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
2. Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
3. WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

• Hahc21 (submissions), who helped take Thirty Flights of Loving through good article candidates and featured article candidates, claiming the first first featured article of the competition.
• Prism (submissions), who claimed the first featured list of the competition with Natalia Kills discography.
• Cwmhiraeth (submissions), who takes the title of the contributor awarded the highest bonus point multiplier (resulting in the highest scoring article) of the competition so far. Her high-importance salamander, now a good article, scored 108 points.

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. I hate to say this, but your addition of County-specific maps to Morris County, New Jersey sites on the National Register of Historic Places have created a broken, and oddly formatted category, specifically, the Category:Historic districts in USA New Jersey Morris County. • No reason to hate to say it; It's an issue. The template is the problem, using the map name to create a category by assuming that the only map that will ever be used is the name of the state from the map parameter. You've "solved" the category problem by using a map that provides only a rough location within the state. The template is what needs to be fixed and I will take a look at this, but the problem only occurs for locations classified as districts and doesn't create problems for other types of NRHP locations in the state. • I looked at what links to the defective category, and Cary Station was one of the entries. Even though the station is a specific building, the nrhp_type parameter in the infobox was set to "hd", meaning it was being considered an historic district. It isn't, so I ws able to correct the parameter, but there are other historic districts in Morris County (i.e., Schooley's Mountain Historic District) and elsewhere in New Jersey. Again, the solution is to correct the use of the parameter for a purpose unrelated to mapping in the template and I would suggest that you follow up on that issue. WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Reid,iain james (submissions), tiger from Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Czar (submissions) and Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. Clementi and the Ridgewood article

Hi, thanks for your message. As I understand it, those guidelines you link to refer to stand-alone lists. The article in question is about Ridgewood, New Jersey, which then happens to also display some notable residents. Basically we tend to be a bit more selective in such instances (and much less so for a stand-alone list) and "no redirects" is a useful way to achieve this. I'm not sure if it's a policy as such, but you'll often see the "no redirects" instruction listed when editing sections such as that one, particularly on high-profile articles. Clementi would probably make the cut for a complete stand-alone list of residents (assuming he has a significant link to the area), but he is likely to be deleted from the Ridgewood article itself, particularly when we consider that the article is already of a substantial size. If he is especially significant to the area in question then a case for inclusion probably could be made, though in such instances it's often better to integrate the event into the article. To be honest the sheer number of names still seems to be a little long to me, and if anything probably needs further trimming if at all possible. This issue is only likely to get worse in future and I think in the long run a stand-alone list is going to be required, with just the very most notable people remaining listed on the main Ridgewood article. I note there's still one red link still in place so I suggest we remove that as a first step. WikiCup 2014 June newsletter

After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.

The round saw this year's first featured portal, with Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to 12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Sven Manguard (submissions).

The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. Rowan College at Gloucester County (formerly GCC)

Alansohn, back in June Gloucester County College was officially renamed Rowan College at Gloucester County. I tried to make the appropriate page move today, but a newbie editor who doesn't know about preserving edit history had written a new (albeit short) article on Rowan College at Gloucester County, thus preventing the page move. You're an administrator who can override this, correct? It's literally the same school, with the same people, and nothing about it is different (for Wikipedia purposes) other than a name change. GOCE July drive and August blitz

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

1. Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
2. Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
3. Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
4. Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
5. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
6. 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
7. Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
8. Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Matty.007 (submissions), ThaddeusB (submissions), WikiRedactor (submissions), Figureskatingfan (submissions), Yellow Evan (submissions), Prism (submissions) and Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum.
