2019–20 snooker season

Hello:

I took a look at this GOCE request you copy edited and overall the article is in good shape.

There are a couple MOS (Manual of Style) issues I'll draw to your attention. Generally numbers between 0 to 9 are written in words. Always fix contractions and write them in full. Make sure the verb tenses are correct. As is often the case with sports articles, this one has a lot of use of the passive voice. WP doesn't seem to have much to say about its use. In general, I think it's better to avoid the passive voice if possible.

In this article, for example: The first of four Home Nations Series events was won by Mark Selby, defeating David Gilbert 9–1 at the English Open. can be rewritten in the active voice as Mark Selby won the first of four Home Nations Series events defeating ... Parliament Hill

Hello:

The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article Parliament Hill has been completed.

I’ll mention a number of items I came across as I worked through the article.

Any information in the lede also needs to appear in the body of the article. Unless it is a contentious or controversial statement no citations should appear in the lede. They are put with the text in the body of the article. I fixed this.

In the Development into a national heart section this when construction resumed following a commission of inquiry. appears. I checked the citation to see why construction was halted and found that citation #4 is the wrong citation; it makes no mention of this. The correct citation needs to be added and an additional explanation for the stoppage given. (I assume it was because of horrendous cost overruns.)

I’m not sure they are necessary, but I added literal translations of the two Latin phrases in the Selection as a parliamentary precinct section.

In the Fire, rebuilding, and beyond section citation #13 is not only a “dead link” its archived version no longer appears in the Wayback Machine data base. This is extremely unusual but means another citation needs to be tracked down.

I added an explanation and instructions to the Click Map. You might want to change the wording.

So, those are my notes.

I'm working on a DYK nomination for the article. The main thing is to pick some hooks (interesting or surprising facts) from the article. Here are a couple:

• ... that Canada's Parliament Hill was the largest construction project undertaken in North America at that time?
• ... that Parliament Hill was originally designed for the Province of Canada and became inadequate for the bureaucracy of the Dominion of Canada, which was founded during its construction?
• ... that Parliament Hill is undergoing an extensive renovation and rehabilitation project while continuing to serve as the seat of Canada's government?

I'll see what else I can come up with. Please suggest anything you like here. If you haven't done one before, I can take care of the DYK nom since there's a time issue. We can do any preliminary discussion here, to keep the DYK nom page clean for the reviewer. I was originally thinking that the DYK could be about Parliament Hill originally being meant for a military base. Something like:

• ... that Parliament Hill had been planned to be the site of a military base, named Barrack Hill?
  • (a) ... that the site of Parliament Hill was previously called Barrack Hill and had been intended for development as a major military base?

or alternatives to that tune. The 2 hooks you suggested look great, and I'd be happy with either one.

I'll put yours as the first hook in the nom. What's in the article is: the builders of the Rideau Canal used the hill as a location for a military base,[3] naming it Barrack Hill. A large fortress was planned for the site following the War of 1812 and the Upper Canada rebellion, but the threat of an American invasion subsided, and the project was scrapped.[3] I take "Barrack Hill" to be the name of the hill, not of the barracks. I've tried a rephrase above. Also, I seem to remember from one of the design sketches for the fortress had it labeled Citadel Hill, but we'd have to add that to the article to use it for DYK.

My hooks are a bit wordy (they usually like them shorter) but trimming is easier than building. Let me know what you think of my rephrase, and I'll double check Commons for any other free images. From what's in the article, I'm thinking File:Parliament Hill_from_a_Hot_Air_Balloon, Ottawa,_Ontario,_Canada, Y2K_(7173715788).jpg might be best. – Reidgreg (talk) 14:00, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Yes, I've taken care of it. Though it looks like a Canada Day set is probably a no-go (see archived discussion here), we may instead end up with Canada-related hooks running in every set that week. Police Memorial article

I just expanded Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial. I'd set aside some info I found about it while working on Parliament Hill and almost forgot about it. I'd like to run it for DYK on Sept 25, which is the national memorial day.

If you have time, could you give it a look over? I'm not sure about the placement of the pictures, just kindof threw it all together and there's not a lot of time for the DYK. Gonna work on the nom now, if you think of a good hook please add it to the nom. It'll be at Template:Did you know nominations/Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial when that turns blue. Hi Reidgreg,

I just took a look at the article, and it satisfies all the DYK criteria and is a very well-written article. The images look good and I don't think there's a need to reposition them; they seem to line up with where the prose mentions it. The only exception to this is the sunset image, although I think it looks good in the article and doesn't need to be moved.

I would say that the article is ready for DYK, and I will be thinking of hooks that could be added to the nom. Many thanks for your help on the Parliament Hill article, and I wish you the best of luck on getting the DYK on the 25th.
