Thought a lot about this, and I'm not sure I see the benefits for those editors who monitor the surname categories. And that particular category, for when this template has extra parameters, was empty when this request was opened and is still empty; so I don't see any advantage there, either. Perhaps if you could elaborate more on the ways this edit would aid editors who monitor surnames? That would help me clear my mind on all this. P.I. Any reason 'type=both' is not available in this template?
It is extremely non-obvious why the type=both parameter is available in {{given name}} but not in this template. There are many surnames that are primarily surnames, but which are also used as a given name. It seems a bit odd to have to use the given name template on an article that is primarily about the surname. older ≠ wiser21:42, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
