This template already has a native_name parameter. I think it should also have a native_name_lang parameter, to take the relevant ISO639 language code and should display the native name, where present, by replacing the current code:

The proposed change does not include the same mark-up. I have suggested the addition of xml:lang="{{{native_name_lang}}}", which is included in {{lang}} along with the lang attribute. The full text of the new code would therefore be

Population census year

Just a small quibble, but when you include a census year on population data in this template, it adds a comma to the year. (e.g. 2,008 instead of just 2008) See examples at Cusco, Iquique. Is there any way to prevent this from occurring? I can understand the comma being added for the population value itself, but the year shouldn't have a comma in it. USDA Hardiness zone

Any objections to adding a field for hardiness zone, using the more-detailed a/b system and the most recently-published map (1990)? I would find this very useful, as would anyone else interested in gardening (hundreds of thousands of Wikipedians, I presume). How is this template edited - all I get is a "view source" tab-button? Unless the code is somehow subtemplated, it can only take so many fields in its present state. Please use the "blank" fields for this type of info.

Extinct towns

Would it be suitable to use the Infobox Settlement template in articles for extinct communities? (Examples: Granville, Warrenton, etc.) It seems like the great majority of the template's fields would apply as well to a historical town as to a modern one, but I wanted to check before going ahead. Cool. As I think about it, perhaps it would make sense to add a flag somewhere in the template to differentiate between modern settlements and historical ones. To me this seems a fairly significant and intrinsic characteristic of any given settlement; plus, having a field for this datum would be more consistent than relying on users to customize the settlement_type with "extinct town", "defunct town", "ghost town", etc. Thoughts? It looks like the most appropriate place to add extinction information would probably be the "Politics" section, with the new field mirroring the existing "established" fields:

|extinct_title |extinct_date

If the circumstances of the settlement's defunctitude (so to speak) call for a particular term, that presumably could be entered — e.g., "Destroyed", "Abandoned", etc.; otherwise, users can just enter "Extinct". If this occurred at a particular time, users could enter a date, year, etc. For instance, Granville, Indiana:

|extinct_title = Extinct |extinct_date = c. 1878

Qyd: True, we do have a lot of parameters already, and I wouldn't want to further inflate it unnecessarily. In this case, though, I do think that a datum indicating whether the subject exists is significant, since that's a fundamental characteristic of any community. Having a separate attribute for this would also allow the possibility of programming conditional variations for extinct/historical settlements -- not something anyone's suggested, but always a possibility.

Coords not working right?

Can someone cluebat me as to why the coords in the Schomberg, Ontario article don't work right? When you click though you end up at the "integer" locations, somewhere east of Toronto. Someone please add a parameter for a settlement's gentile title (i.e., a Washingtonian from Washington, a Liverpudlian for Liverpool, etc.). This issue has been brought up before, and I reduplicate the four separate discussions here:

Demonym

Would it be possible to add a place for the demonym of a city—the name given to its inhabitants? Such names don't seem to be used often in English-speaking countries (at least, not in America), but demonyms are quite common in Spanish, and probably similar languages as well, so it would be nice if we could add them to the infobox.Salmar 20:25, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Gentilic

Can we add a field for the city's gentilic? This wouldn't be too hard and would be useful. I noticed several other more specific infoboxes for cities and towns have this.

It's a little different. Gentilic, or demonym, is what the residents of the city are called, not a nickname for the city itself. Like "New Yorker" for New York City. --MattWright (talk) 22:43, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
