Video gaming

Video gaming? This topic was not really relevant in first 3/4 of centuary, and leeds to silly articles like 1933 in video gaming, is there an easy way to make this switchable? --Salix alba (talk) 14:49, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, there is no easy way to make it switchable. I suggest removing topics unless they have, or at least could have articles for almost every year of the century. meta:ParserFunctions now makes this possible. I've inserted a conditional inclusion which will display the video gaming category only for the years 1952, 1958, 1962, and 1970 onwards. metal?

i just added the "[year] in metal" links in the 21st century template. and it worked fine. but the metal pages run all the way back to 1971 and then one page for the 60's. is long enough back to put it on the template? i ask because its kind of hard to right a page about a genre that derived forma genre that didn't even exist yet. ...Patrick (talk, contributions) 05:09, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at the formatting for [year] in home video links, something very similar would work well here. It only displays on years from 1970 onwards - [year] in metal could only display on years from 1971 onwards. Warofdreams talk 01:28, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Max width=300

02-May-2007: I have set width=300 and moved "Ireland" and "Sovereign" for narrowing the box. The Template:C20YearInTopic had become too wide (at width=350) and was chopping/eclipsing text due to the Wiki issue where a wider box/image (following a narrow one, such as "Year_nav") will sometimes chop/eclipse the text at the right margin. In 2007, a box/image can be stacked followed by an equal or smaller width box/image, but a wider one may chop text depending on the Wiki text-wrap after revising/adding text. The chopping of text also depends on varying the browser window size.

A width=300 is about the widest possible for Template:C20YearInTopic without chopping the right-margin text in some articles. Also 300px, is about the max width for most images mixed with text (800x600 screens), or the text-wrapping squeezes to 5-words-per-line and crowds out the text, making the article essentially a monument to the image. In some cases, such as detailed maps, images of width of 350-430px can be shown, but generally, text should be forced below a very-wide image to avoid the bizarre one-word-per-line text-wrapping.

Meanwhile, as long as text-chopping is a problem (in 2007), stacking wider boxes after narrow boxes should be avoided, so keep limiting max width=300 in Template:C20YearInTopic. Thanks for your patience while Wiki-formatting evolves. -Wikid77 17:45, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the Soviet Union inclusion needs help. There doesn't appear to be any Soviet Union articles with the format, for example, 1973 in the Soviet Union. Instead, it appears that all Russian events have been condensed into Timeline of Russian history. Unfortunately, headings within Timeline of Russian history are solely at the level of century so internal links such as Timeline of Russian history#1973 won't work without explicit year Template:Anchor tags being added to Timeline of Russian history. And even then, I'm not sure Template:Anchor would have the desired effect within the Timeline of Russian history tables. I'm afraid I don't have a suggestion as to how to easily resolve this problem.
