This template is used at the top of the polyandry article, in which File:Draupadi and Pandavas.jpg is applied with a caption using the |caption= parameter. This results in the caption being duplicated to File:Eg-filiation.svg below. Two options to fix the problem locally are:
Move the image and caption out of the template
Change the local parameter |caption= to |topcaption=
I recommend changing the template's | topimage = parameter to convert the local code automatically, as per the second bullet point, and the doc to specify the problem when using |caption= locally, as per the above example. For now, I have left the problem at the article alone so that this proposal can be evaluated. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 19:19, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello CJDOS! I'm digging the all the great userboxes you have on your talk page, very nice! But I dont see one declaring a COI, so I'm guessing the COI edit request box here was maybe a mistake? No worries if that's the case. Happy editing! Spintendo03:14, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Spintendo. I thought the "Conflict of interest" was just an artifact of {{Request edit}} appearing on its own template page. No, I don't have a conflict of interest, but the edit request I described is a little above my expertise. I only meant to draw attention to the edit request, but {{Anthropology of kinship}} isn't protected, so I couldn't use one of the 'edit protected' templates. I've swapped out the template for perhaps a more appropriate one. Any suggestions on the edit request itself? — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 07:02, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@CJDOS: This one is a puzzler. In a brief survey, I found that most pages listed in this sidebar do not use the image= or caption= parameters (three do and they all exhibit this defect). Instead, when they have one, they place the image and caption outside the sidebar template. While those parameters are identified for this template, it appears that as-implemented, they don't work the way one reasonably expects them to work and the documentation is not helpful. I'd have to guess that the mistake is thinking the sidebar could be used as a sort of infobox, which it is not, even if it shares some underpinnings with infoboxes.
While I can look at the code and sort of understand it, I'm not able to put my finger on the cause of the duplicated captions. Perhaps this is a situation where one should file a WP:Phabricator ticket in order to get someone with the necessary expertise to take a closer look at it. — jmcgnh(talk)(contribs)08:03, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The issue here is that when GKFX tried to "fix" this template by invoking sidebar directly it removed the negative parameter use, i.e. before this edit |caption= didn't actually do anything, but since it's invoking the module directly now it ends up being used twice. I am tired of getting into edit wars with GKFX over these sorts of things, so I have simply removed the | topcaption = {{{caption|}}} line from the sidebar and changed the polyandry use to use |topcaption= instead. Primefac (talk) 08:09, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Primefac: I tried to turn image= into topimage= in an effort to get rid of the repeats of the image name in later sections, but then it lost the infobox treatment and just displayed the file name at the top. Other tricks I tried were to give the image link, which sort of worked, but still didn't look quite right. So I'm leaving it alone in hopes a better fix will emerge. — jmcgnh(talk)(contribs)09:09, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That is... dumb. Special:Diff/1162214883 "fixes" it (per the instructions at {{sidebar}}) but it looks terrible. I have a mind to revert the invoke back to a template call just so that we can sort the parameters out properly, but I'll wait for GKFX to comment. Primefac (talk) 18:20, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I found that solution, too, and also didn't like it. According to {{sidebar}}, this field should only be used to define a generic image for a sidebar, not to provide custom images for individual articles: sidebars are not displayed on mobile. So this whole endeavor is misguided. — jmcgnh(talk)(contribs)15:32, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds like the best course of action is to remove the | topimage = parameter entirely (the | topcaption = parameter has already been removed), and move the top image out of the sidebar of articles with this problem (Polyandry, Polyandry in India, Chinese kinship). Thus, two separate elements in articles, rather than combined. Done — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 16:50, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"by group"
The wording by "group" is a little misleading, since it's really the six logical types of 1st-generation kinship terminology. They were given names by Lewis H. Morgan ("Eskimo", "Sudanese" etc), but each article is about the kinship terminology, not really about the specific group which is its namesake... AnonMoos (talk) 12:16, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
