Hi everybody. I've just updated everything. I really do not like making these decisions on my own about on what article, bio and pic is selected. We need to formalize a system where all involved get to have their say on what we selected before the next months starts. With tha in mind could we have nominations for the various selected items please. I'm suggesting Feminist theory for the SA. Easiest thing to do might be to ask users to sign their nominations and to send out a call for nominations at teh beginning of the last week of each month to the task force members. We could then discuss that month's nominations on the appropriate nomination page or talk page--Cailil talk 19:07, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

June 2008 updates

There will live content again tomorrow in the Selected article, biography, and picture areas. Since consensus has been a bit quiet, and the updating dead, I went ahead and chose some already-suggested articles. I've also been doing various bits of housekeeping, which include moving suggested biographies from the SA nominating area to the SB nominating area, cleaning out dead months from the archives, linking nominating pages to one another, and a few other things. --Yamara ✉ 06:15, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

I also hid the DYK element until we can decide on what to do with it (I think the Technology Portal has a well-functioning DYK we could steal the code from). Gender equality is one of this project's central concepts. It was AWOL.

Sorry for sounding a little wacky there above, I've had sleep now. Essentially, variations on Gender equality had been hijacked six or so months ago by redirects to both Zygarchy and Equalism, and had actually begun to affect the conversation across the internet.

This is bad news, as these terms have nothing behind them but ill-defined assertions. I've rarely been embarrassed for Wikipedia, but this is one of those moments where the site's power was left in the hands of POV/OR mischief-makers.

"Zygarchy" is a made-up word that would never meet the WP:NEO standard if anyone had caught it. It has never meant "rule of two genders" before someone asserted it on Wikipedia. There are a couple hundred blogs out there crowing about the "new word they'd learned" while learning less than zero about notable, verifiable internationally-established gender policy. (Somewhat ominously, "zygarchy" is an obscure but genuine term for an ancient military formation involving two chariots. I think the chariots were used to run infantry over... or to cut them down with a chain between them...)

"Equalism" has been used by notable sources and scholars-- but never consistently. There was some effort to use it to refer to communism in the fifties, anarchism at various points, and some among the Facebook crowd seem to like it better than "feminism"; one news citation in Sweden counts it as a subset of feminism. That is to say, it's a semantic game: There is no "-ism" there, just a desire for one, a moving target without a developed philosophy behind it. I've redirected it to a far more notable article, Egalitarianism.

Nearly every instance of a wikilink to Gender equality had been piped to Equalism. That's what last night was all about for me: finding and removing the plumbing from this phantasm.

I've reestablished the Gender equality article with cites to the UN and an external link to the World Bank. I've added it to the various gender studies and feminism templates. Feminism By Country

Yes but that might mean some rewriting and merging. Many of these articles in both groups are recording similar things and have many areas of overlap - that said we could do it so that summaries of, for example, Feminism in Egypt are placed in Women in Egypt - this way we also keep a list of "feminism in" articles and could link them to History of feminism and/or Feminism and of course at teh portal--Cailil talk 22:55, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
I think I get what your saying now. Since both are similar, we can merge and/or rewrite some of the articles. Like you said, for example, the article Feminism in Egypt could be placed on the Women in Egypt article. I totally agree with you on that...if that's what your saying. Are you saying that some of the "Feminism in..." articles could be place on the History of feminism article as well? I know that there is already a category called Category:Feminism by country, so that could be of use as well. Also, The "Women in..." articles are under the Category:Women by nationality, perhaps that could be of use too or we could merge the 2 categories. What do you think? Also, I played in my Sandbox3 as well, with this. (See also the Sandbox for the other one that I played with.) Do you think a Feminism and culture would be useful? Basically I think you've caught my drift. Regarding Category:Women by nationality it has another purpose - as the parent category for categories like Category:French women so I wouldn't merge the categories - just use both for the moment. About culture it depends on what use of the word you mean, for example do you mean culture as in "the arts" (which I think there should be enough material for an article) or culture as in civilization (which might overlap with feminism by country)? Personally I think grouping these articles around Women's history makes the most sense. As regards the lists - which is not my strongest suit - I'd suggest you make sure they follow WP:LIST and get some advice from WikiProject Lists before moving them into the mainspace - but your work is looking promising to me--Cailil talk 12:45, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
Ok, we'll use both categories for the moment. I guess your right about Feminism and culture, it would overlap with the feminism by country thing. How would we go about grouping the articles around Women's history? Which lists are you talking about? Reformat in progress

I am going to reformat this portal to rotate randomly with a set number of selections (hopefully only WP:GA and WP:FA content) as opposed to by Month/Year. I have found that the Month/Year format tends to eventually lead to inactivity and redlinks in the portal (as there are currently). Cirt (talk) 17:31, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

List of articles

I'm working on the list of FAs for the portal and I was wondering what we want to consider "feminism". For example, do we want to include all biographies of women or just women who had some association with any kind of feminism? Awadewit (talk) 16:35, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Selected anniversaries

I started a new subsection for the portal:

Each month should have one free-use image, and (5) entries total highlighting an interesting date related to feminism/women's history. You can see a completed version of this model at Portal:Russia/Selected anniversaries.

The Featured articles list will have to be a merge of a list of the biographies and general articles, sorted alphabetically. I think we should just use blue links in a straight list format and not <gallery></gallery> for the list of WP:FPs, because there are too many for gallery display on the Main Page. Wondrous, Exciting! This Feminism Portal!

I've only been trying my hand at Wikipedia editing for a couple of weeks ... and have only begun to find my way to the gender-balanced (or balancing) editors and projects.

Looking for guidance, and have some questions to ask, as to where are the articles on Woman and Herstory ... the recent ten thousand years of it ... discussed in thousands of printed books and magazine articles. Is it absent from Wikipedia? Not politically correct? Why only 'Feminism' portals, task forces, and articles, which seemingly are only focusing on shallow and political and contemporary history, for the last few hundreds of years?

I love feminism, yet observe that at Wikipedia and elsewhere it is, again, not focused on the woman's legacy, wisdom, tradition, herstory ... however we want to name it.

So I am looking for the appropriate places to begin a dialog, and find some colleagues and guides, as to how to find or create the great integrity of woman's oral, intangible, essential (equal) wisdom and knowledge-place in history and herstory. Pre-written history and contemporary with the last five thousand years or so of written history.

As the indigenous grandmothers are drawing attention to worldwide, it is the (equal) role and participation and CREATION of women that is essential to the health and continuity and survival of humanity and our "Mother Earth". I have no doubt that the founders and administrators of Wikipedia, not to mention the editors, have the same interest ... just that like all of us they have suffered under the ignorance and provincial and 'patriarchal' legacy of the past. Which past is behind us now.

So how do we generate a 'today', a 2009, of a Wikipedia which is healthy, balanced and thus beautiful? The 'Western' 'scientific' topical categorization of all knowledge, used here at Wikipedia, blocks 99 percent of access to Wikipedia -- to the subjects which are NOT anthropology, NOT religion, NOT science, NOT politics, NOT history, etc. -- but rather are a subject list by culture, by tribe, by ethnic group. Can we find, or create, such a list at Wikipedia (cf the World Heritage List [[1]]? Is this the correct Portal to bring up this subject? Suggestions, guidance, any- and every-one?

Template photo

Street Scholar, I will have you know that feminism is NOT misandarist. Apparently, you've heard too much negativity and lies about feminism. Feminism to me, is all about women's rights and having the same rights as men. If feminism is so misandrist, why are there more men than women editing this portal? Why don't you rename the page "Violence against women" in "gender based violence"? This is the correct definition because "is a manifestation of historically unequal power relations between men and women, which have led to domination over and discrimination against women by men and to the prevention of the full advancement of women, and that violence against women is one of the crucial social mechanisms by which women are forced into a subordinate position compared with men " (...), Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, United Nations -General Assembly dic. 1993

Does anyone else disagree with this title: Sarah Brown (wife of Gordon Brown)?

On the Talk page I've just said it is sexist and patronising beyond belief to have this title, because it suggests that this women is only definable by reference to her husband. Can you please leave your thoughts to have this moved to an alternate title? Thanks, Wikidea 15:23, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Looking for suggestions on a Masculism portal

From the history, it appears that this Feminism portal began as a Task Force on Gender Studies in 2008, and then grew to it's own project in 2010, and has flourished since then. I think it would be cool if that success could be emulated in a communal project to document things that might be labelled masculism and activism related to male rights. I am wondering since people here would be experienced in this if there could be pointers and if these could be sibling-type communities. Ranze (talk) 08:37, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Recommend for removal. Feminism has become a polarizing topic that has become associated with censorship. Promoting this ideology so heavily on an open source information sharing site makes the information therein appear to be biased. The benefit of Wikipedia as an open source web reference is that users can share information as long as it is properly researched and vetted. We have an article about Women in Europe, but it cuts the information by country and I am looking for an article about Women by time period. Do we have something that focuses on "Women in the 10th century" or something similar?-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 06:15, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

A similar discussion was happened last year for changing ICC T20 World Cup to ICC Men's T20 World Cup here In brief, ICC the governing world cricketing body has changed all their tournaments' names in gender specific way recently like ICC Men's Cricket World Cup (previously Cricket World Cup) or 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup (instead of 2023 Cricket World Cup) and has been well recognised by major cricketing websites along with news sites (RS). Category "Individualist Feminist"

A Wikipedia author from german Wikipeda recently went into the topic of feminism and flooded the category Individualist feminists with arbitrary women who he believed are "individual feminists" based on his made up definition of individualist feminism which was not grounded in literature at all. (mostly celebrities or pron actors / directors where he believed that sex positive feminism is synonymous with individual feminism, e.g. [2]) You may want to check that category again and remove any entries that do not actually belong there.
