Luke Matthew Edmunds (born 7 December 1981) is an Australian politician who currently serves as the member for Pembroke in the Tasmanian Legislative Council. He was elected at a by-election in 2022 and is a member of the Labor Party.[1]

Early life

Edmunds was raised in Launceston, attending Mowbray Primary School, Brooks High School and Newstead College, as well as studying Arts at the University of Tasmania.[2] He worked as a journalist for all three of Tasmania's major newspapers: The Examiner, The Mercury and The Advocate, where he was sports editor.[3]

Political career

Edmunds joined the Labor Party in 2006.[4] He contested the 2018 local government elections ss an alderman candidate for Clarence City Council, and was elected with 4.15% of first preferences [5][6][7]

In 2022, Edmunds was endorsed by Labor to contest the Pembroke by-election, following the retirement of incumbent Labor MLC Jo Siejka. He suffered a 39.48% swing away on first preferences but was ultimately easily elected, winning 63.33% of the two-party-preferred vote.[8]

Personal life

Edmunds lives in Bellerive and is a renter.[9]
