Critical reception
The editorial staff of AllMusic Guide gave the release three out of five stars, with Thom Jurek writing that the album is Callier's most confounding and "it's hard to know whom to blame for making a mess of what was arguably a solid album", noting that the shift to disco does not work for Callier and that some songs are overproduced but sums up that the release has its own "strangeness and charm".[1] Writing for Pitchfork Media, Andy Beta scored this album and the subsequent Turn You to Love a 5.5. out of 10, writing that Fire on Ice "sputters on so many levels that it's hard to isolate just where things misfire".[2]
