Fadlo R. Khuri (Arabic: فضلو خوري) is an American medical doctor and university administrator. He is the 16th and current president of the American University of Beirut. He assumed office in September 2015[1] and was inaugurated on January 25, 2016.[2] Khuri was also a professor in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine and was the editor-in-chief of the medical journal Cancer.[3]

While working as an emergency room physician, Khuri was sued for medical malpractice by a patient who was left brain damaged and severely disabled after an asthma attack. The case is featured in a textbook on medical law to illustrate what the textbook's authors called "the possible consequences of inaccurate or ambiguous medical record documentation".[4]

Khuri was formerly executive associate dean of research and chair of the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory University's School of Medicine. He also served as deputy director of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.[3]

Awards and honors

Khuri has received numerous awards for his contributions to science, medicine, and education, including:

  • Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Memorial Award (2013, AACR)[1]
  • Scientific and Technological Achievement Award (2015, TAKREEM)[2]
  • Joseph W. Cullen Award (2018, IASLC)[3]
  • No Tobacco Award (2018, WHO)[4]

He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2014), the Royal College of Physicians (2017), and a full member and vice president of the Lebanese Academy of Sciences (since 2015).[5]
