In 2023, Helton supported a resolution to expel three Democratic lawmakers from the legislature for violating decorum rules. The expulsion was widely characterized as unprecedented.[3]
Background
Helton was born in East Ridge, Tennessee in 1961. Helton had a medical background prior to politics, serving as a practical nurse after attaining only a one year degree at Chattanooga State for 35 years. She was previously married to Cris Helton, a prominent East Ridge city judge who filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Quickly rising from the ashes of her marriage to begin her own political career, she remarried Hamilton County Tax assessor Marty Haynes and was elected with the help of former mayor Vince Dean.
