At the time of the 2006 National Census, the city's population was 16,988 in 4,813 households, when it was the capital of the former Eshtehard District[8] of Karaj County, Tehran province.[9] The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 29,993 inhabitants in 9,357 households,[2] by which time the county had been separated from the province in the establishment of Alborz province.[10] In 2012, the district was separated from the county in the establishment of Eshtehard County, and Eshtehard was transferred to the new Central District as the county's capital.[3]
