^ Although he was ordained to the office of Apostle, Cowdery was never a member of the Quorum of the Twelve.
^ Although early church documents state that Whitmer, like Smith and Cowdery, was ordained to the priesthood office of Apostle, see, e.g., Doctrine and Covenants , Covenant 18:9 , there is no record of this ordination, and Whitmer was never a member of the Quorum of the Twelve.
^ Some church leaders have stated that Harris was an ordained Apostle; see, e.g., Heber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses 6 :29[permanent dead link ] ; however, there is no record of the ordination and Harris was never a member of the Quorum of the Twelve.
^ Grant was never a member of the Quorum of the Twelve.
^ John Willard Young was never a member of the Quorum of the Twelve.
^ Wells was never a member of the Quorum of the Twelve.

^ During the weekend of General Conference in which Smoot was sustained, the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve deliberated the issue of apostolic seniority. The determination was made that Brigham Young Jr. , who had been listed as the senior apostle to Joseph F. Smith since April of 1869 (likely in view of his having been ordained an apostle earlier), should definitively be considered the junior apostle to Joseph F. Smith . But since Smith was then serving in the First Presidency, Young continued as Quorum President until Snow's passing.
^ Winder was never ordained to the office of Apostle.
^ Nibley was never ordained to the office of Apostle.
^ Although Joseph Fielding Smith was made a counselor in the First Presidency on 29 October 1965, he remained President of the Quorum and a member of the Quorum until 23 January 1970, when he became President of the Church. See "General Authorities of the Church" , Conference Report , April 1966, page 9.
^ Alvin R. Dyer was sustained as a counselor in the First Presidency on 6 April 1968. See "General Authorities and General Officers of the Church" , Conference Report , April 1968, page 70.
^ Dyer was never a member of the Quorum of the Twelve.
^ Though Dallin H. Oaks was presented as an apostle on 7 April 1984, he was not ordained until 3 May 1984, due to his need to finish some obligations in his capacity as a justice of the Utah Supreme Court. See this article for details.
^ Though Packer's passing left Nelson, the next senior apostle as the de facto Quorum President, he was not officially set apart until 12 days later, on 15 July.
