Blackstar is a science-fiction[3] novel written by American author Josh Viola (The Bane of Yoto), based on the 2012 album Wish Upon a Blackstar by Celldweller.

Background

After the release of Wish Upon a Blackstar, Klayton, the man behind Celldweller, stated that he envisioned a story to which he would compose a musical score.

[...] I will be releasing a soundtrack to accompany each act of the book. I'm creating the music that I hear when I watch this movie in my head.[...] My "hope" (but not "promise") is to have a full album of score to release when the full book is released.[4]

The novel would be released as an eBook together with the score, and a paperback version would follow.[5][6]

Synopsis

In a barren world, the last outpost of civilization is the fortress city of Central. It is led by Kaine, who is a benevolent ruler. He maintains Re:memory, a public archive holding humanity's memories of the world before its destruction.

Rezin, a Reaper doesn't know how he came to be in Central. His abilities allow him to hack any system and steal information in order to sell it. He lives a luxurious life, until the day he connects to Re:memory and finds something he doesn't understand.

Forced to flee Central into the dangerous Outlands for the breach he committed, Rezin must avoid Kaine's pursuers, while simultaneously dealing with the ways in which Re:memory's secrets are changing him, conferring upon him powers he cannot control. When he meets mysterious twins with powers of their own, Rezin begins a new journey, one that will reveal to him the nature of the universe—as well as his own.[7]
