Asking for It had its world premiere at the 2021 Tribeca Festival on June 13.[3] It was released in limited theaters and on VOD by Saban Films on March 4, 2022.[4]
Reception
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 22% of 32 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.3/10.[5]Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 20 out of 100, based on seven critics, indicating "generally unfavorable" reviews.[6]
Ferdosa of Screen Rant awarded the film one and a half stars out of five.[7] Susannah Gruder of IndieWire graded the film a Cā.[8] Ciara Wardlow of RogerEbert.com awarded the film one star.[9]
Jon Mendelsohn of Comic Book Resources gave the film a negative review and wrote that it "attempts a hard-hitting social commentary with a vibrant cast, but falls flat due to a lack of authenticity and follow-through."[10] Jessica Kiang of Variety also gave the film a negative review, writing that it "is too much like its cardboard heroines: edgy on the outside, empty within."[11] Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times also gave the film a negative review, calling it "a film that cares little for differentiating one violated woman ā or one pasty-faced jerk ā from another."[12]
