Aleksa Nenadović (1749 Brankovina, Sanjak of Smederevo — 4 February 1804, Valjevo, Sanjak of Smederevo) was ober knyaz of Tamnava—Posavina district of Valjevo nahiyah of the Belgrade Pashaluk.

Family

Aleksa Nenadović was a member of the Nenadović family from Valjevo. His younger brother was Jakov Nenadović, the first Serbian Interior Minister and voivode (military commander) in the First Serbian Uprising. His sons were Sima Nenadović who was a Serbian voivode in the Second Serbian Uprising and Matija Nenadović, a Serbian archpriest, writer, and a notable leader of the First Serbian Uprising.

Biography

Aleksa Nenadović had business relations with Hadži Mustafa Pasha who was a vizier of the Belgrade Pashaluk. He also cooperated with Peter Ichko who saved his life once.[1] In the summer of 1797 sultan appointed Mustafa Pasha on position of beglerbeg of Rumelia Eyalet and he left Serbia for Plovdiv to fight against Pazvantoğlu.[2] During the absence of Mustafa Pasha the forces of Pazvantoğlu together with Janissaries captured Požarevac and besieged Belgrade fortress.[3] At the end of November 1797 Aleksa Nenadović together with other ober knezes from Valjevo Ilija Birčanin and Nikola Grbović brought their forces to Belgrade and forced besieging Janissary forces to retreat to Smederevo.[4][5]

Death

He was executed by decapitation along with Ilija Birčanin by the Dahije in an event known as the Slaughter of the Knezes in which over 72 Serbs were murdered from 23 to 29 January 1804. This event, in turn, triggered the First Serbian Uprising. When he was killed, Mehmed-aga Fočić, who was a part of the Dahije, put his head, along with others, on his chardak.

   U svojim Memoarima prota Mateja Nenadović kazuje, da je i njegov otac, valjevski knez Aleksa, imao od ranije poslovnih veza sa hadži-Mustafom i da je bio prijatelj Petra Ička, koji mu je jednom prilikom i život spasao.

   U leto 1797. sultan ga je imenovao za rumeliskog begler-bega i Mustafa je otišao u Plovdiv, da rukovodi akcijom protiv buntovnika iz Vidina i u Rumeliji.

   Za vreme njegova otsutstva vidinski gospodar sa janičarima naredio je brz napad i potukao je srpsku i pašinu vojsku kod Požarevca, pa je prodro sve do Beograda i zauzeo samu varoš.

   Pred sam Božić stigoše u pomoć valjevski Srbi i sa njihovom pomoću turska gradska posada odbi napadače i očisti grad. Ilija Birčanin gonio je "Vidinlije" sve do Smedereva.
