1991 NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament
The 1991 NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament was the 33rd annual tournament organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association to determine the national champion of men's collegiate soccer among its Division I members in the United States. Virginia defeated Santa Clara in the championship game in a penalty kick shootout (3–1) after the match ended in a 0–0 tie after four overtime periods. This was a re-match of the 1989 tournament final at Rutgers Stadium when both teams were crowned co-national champions (before the NCAA adopted penalty kick shootouts for settling tied games). The final match was played on December 8 at the USF Soccer Stadium in Tampa, Florida. All the other games were played at the home field of the higher seeded team.[1][2] QualifyingFive teams made their debut appearances in the NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament: Florida International, Furman, Hartford, UNC Charlotte, and Tulsa.
