2004 war er Invited Speaker auf dem Europäischen Mathematikerkongress in Stockholm (On the Camassa-Holm and the Hunter-Saxton equations). 2017 erhielt er die Ehrendoktorwürde der Vietnam Academy of Sciences and Technology.[2]
