Di Republik India, seorang ketua menteri adalah kepala pemerintah dari setiap dua puluh sembilan negara bagian dan dua wilayah persatuan (Delhi dan Puducherry). Menurut konstitusi India, di tingkat negara bagian, gubernur adalah kepala de jure, namun wewenang eksekutif de facto berada di tangan ketua menteri. Setelah pemilihan majelis legislatif negara bagian, gubernur biasanya mengundang partai (atau koalisi) yang memperoleh kursi mayoritas untuk membentuk pemerintahan. Gubernur melantik ketua menteri yang bertanggung jawab secara kolektif (bersama dengan dewan menteri) kepada majelis tersebut. Apabila ia memperoleh kepercayaan majelis, masa jabatan ketua menteri biasanya paling lama lima tahun, walaupun tidak ada batas jumlah masa jabatan.[1]

Dari tiga puluh satu petahana saat ini, tiga orang di antaranya adalah wanita—Mamata Banerjee di Benggala Barat, Mehbooba Mufti di Jammu dan Kashmir, dan Vasundhara Raje di Rajasthan. Menjabat sejak Desember 1994 (selama 29 tahun, 326 hari), Pawan Kumar Chamling dari Sikkim memiliki masa jabatan terpanjang. Virbhadra Singh (l. 1934) dari Himachal Pradesh adalah ketua menteri tertua,[2] sementara Pema Khandu (l. 1979) dari Arunachal Pradesh adalah yang termuda.
