La rutherfordine prend surtout la forme de lattes orthorhombiques allongées pouvant atteindre 3mm et plus. Elle peut former des agrégats radiés, fibreux, enchevêtrés ou des masses pulvérulentes. La formation de rosettes ouvertes est fréquente, mais non des nodules.
