Naming conventions questions

Dropping a line here to ask two questions I had when trying to make sense of the NC pages under this project.

The first is this: was Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Australian and New Zealand stations) ever accepted or formally adopted? (I see, for instance, that Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Taiwan stations) was not, but there was ambiguity about the ANZ page.)

The second is a thought. Wikipedia:Naming conventions (stations) is occupied by a longtime historic proposal. Would it be worth archiving that elsewhere and, if the country stations pages have to be separate, creating a disambiguation page for the various railway station NC pages by country/region, or perhaps an overarching summary page for the nine NCs that are about or mention railway stations? Commons Category placing in station articles

Hi, where should the Commons template be placed in, for example, station articles? Is it under References, External Links etc? The box I'm thinking of is this box

I believe that if the article already contains an "External links" section, you can add the {{commons category}} template at the top of the list of links (so that the box will appear to the right of the links). If it doesn't, you can add an "External links" section with {{Commons category-inline}} as the sole entry. Deor (talk) 16:08, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As a heads-up: where instances of infobox station have the |style2=NSW TrainLink regional attribute set, the resulting white-text-on-orange-background header doesn't comply with the requirements of MOS:CONTRAST. I've fixed this at Canberra by manually enclosing the name string in a {{font colour}} template, but I'd appreciate other editors looking out for this too (or, even better, coming up with a systematic fix). Third opinion requested

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. SEPTA Metro page moves

The following are planned page moves per SEPTA's pending renaming of the following stations and services:

Just noting that I talked to Cards84664 about this off-wiki. I'm fine with these moves. However, I'm wondering about the feasibility of splitting off SEPTA Metro (I theorized that it could be split off immediately, but looking at the sourcing on the SEPTA page, it seemed like most of the sources about SEPTA Metro were primary sources until I added some secondary sources just now). – Epicgenius (talk) 16:19, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's a little too early to implement these moves. The current SEPTA maps and current schedules do not include these new line or station names. However, the new "SEPTA Metro" name for the network as a whole is currently being used, so I do support an article split.
According to the official SEPTA Metro page, the changes to the line names will be made in 2024, although there is no precise date. Regarding those changes, the word "Line" (or "Lines") will need to be included in the title. Each lettered line will also have a number, even if it only operates a single service (e.g. the MFL will be "L", but its service will be "L1"). So do we include the redudant "1" in the title? That might need to be discussed. In the meantime, here are my suggestions for page moves sometime next year:

Per SEPTA Metro's new terminology, an alternative could be T (SEPTA Metro lines) and T1 (SEPTA Metro train) (or trolley, but they're trying to get rid of that terminology). I think the word "Line" should definitely be included in the title, and not between parentheses. This is pretty standard among all rail line articles (e.g. T Line (Sound Transit), B Line (Los Angeles Metro), Piccadilly line). –Dream out loud (talk) 15:41, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The NYCS network is a little different in the sense that there is a difference between "lines" and "services". For example, B (New York City Subway service) runs along the IND Sixth Avenue Line. One of the largest freight and passenger stations in Slovenia, nearly 180 years old, I'd be astounded if there weren't sources available to prove its notability. Train station notability

I have come across the Wikipedia:NTRAINSTATION page and found that many train station articles don't meet such a notability guideline. For instance, many articles in List of railway stations in Pakistan are purely the documentation of the stations' geographical location and nothing else. Does anything need to be done? If you find an article about a railway station you don't think is notable, the first thing you should do is look for sources. Google is a good place to start, but it is not sufficient on its own - note that most sources about railway stations are written in the local language and are very likely to be offline (especially those opened before the circa 2010s). If you have looked for sources in the places they are most likely to be and haven't found significant coverage then the content should be merged and the title redirected to the most appropriate higher-level article. The article about the line or system the station is on usually makes the best target but exceptions do exist. Only if you cannot verify that the station ever existed and/or that it was never a station is an AfD likely to result in deletion. Thryduulf (talk) 11:42, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that such a problem also seems persistent in [[Category:Railway stations in Malaysia]. I picked out a handful of articles and saw Paloh railway station, Tenang railway halt, and plenty more seeming to not be up to the standards of WP:NTRAINSTATION. The main reason I investigated the British stations is because I live in the UK and those stations are stations that I know and have visited.
