Edit summaries

Hi; I just wanted to turn your attention to Wikipedia:Edit summary. You don't have to waste time listing change details in the edit summary; if you only fix spelling and grammar (as you seem to do mostly), it's OK to put just an abbreviation like sp or fmt.   • You're indeed doing good, valuable work - an example is your recent spelling and grammar corrections to the Finland article, which is on my watchlist. To save energy, and channel your efforts to the real work, you really don't have to make such extensive edit summaries, also, you can do all the changes you want in one edit, and mark it "spellling & grammar" or "copyedit". Edits on usertalk pages

On the one hand, I would like to thank you for your copyedits [1] on my usertalk page. "Soem" and "suspecious" were simple misspellings that the authors obviously didn't intend.

On the other hand, I think some of your other edits [2] [3] were less beneficial. I always respect others' word choice on my talk page, even though I could easily alter their text to suit my tastes. In fact, this extends to the point that I won't even change spelling erros, as you saw. I'd like you to extend the same courtesy, and I've reverted the "english-ifying" and "who/whom" edits (I'd be glad to explain my reasoning behind keeping "who" as an object pronoun). Longfellow

As far as can see you have restored all the text from the Longfellow article. The fastest way to restore text is to click on the 'History' tab, then select the version you want to restore (the one just before the vandal came in) by clicking 'last'. This will bring in the original non vandalized text. Select the 'edit this page' tab, write a comment in the 'Edit summary' like "revert vandalism" and click 'save page' and you are done. If you noticed furhter vandalism from this user, let me know and I will report him to an administrator (he has already been warned twice). Happy editing! [4]: Yes, this person was annoying. But a personal attack is still not in order. And an unsigned personal comment? My mom always told me that if you are going to pick a fight, don't go hiding. By the way, also, do keep in mind that an IP address might not be used only by one person, so your remark may be read by someone who is, say, an inmate in the same penal institution, and appear to be directed at the wrong person. (Despite the tone of that last, I am serious about suggesting that you refrain from personal attacks, especially unsigned ones on IP pages. Ah, you never know what temperament that fellow-inmate newbie might have. While I agree that the person to whom you are addressing the remark will know that it is addressed to him (I'm sure it's a "him"), the problem is more that the total newbie who might use the same IP address may not work out that the remark is not addressed to him (or her). No Good Deed...

I recently installed a WikiMedia wiki on my own server and kind of got the idea of how this works. I was viewing the Taxonomy page and found that it had an error. Someone had made a linke like this:

So I thought to myself, "Hey, self, that's not right. Cool, I know how to fix it." So I did. I put in two left braces. Now I'm a vandal and kinda pissed that I'm supposedly a vandal. You can see for yourself what changes I've made at Special:Contributions/68.254.154.126 (If that link will work (or just find contributions from 68.254.154.126 yourself))

If would be nice to know of exactly what kind of vandalism I'm accused of btw.

Long story short, I saw a simple bug, fixed it, and now I'm a vandal.

Please take care in technical articles

Dear Commander: The "history" page of the article "History of evolutionary thought" records that on 25 February 2007 you edited the sentence "The preformed parts expanded and rearranged themselves to grow into an adult, and so Bonnet was called a 'preformationist'" to read "The performed parts expanded and rearranged themselves to grow into an adult, and so Bonnet was called a 'preformationist'".

This "improvement" in spelling had to be reversed by GRBerry on 28 February 2007. You seem to be very good at taking criticism (which is refreshing!), so I gently offer this: when "fixing" technical articles, take great care: there are many terms used which are quite unknown to even fairly well-educated language users. Hi Writtenright, thanks for the tip. As it turns out, I've run across the (correct) use of 'preformed' a number of times on Wikipedia. Usually it's used when discussing moulds used in metallurgy, glasswork, plastics and so on. I guess in this particular case I must not have been paying as much attention as I should have been, and inadvertently approved the change. I've made a note of it so it won't recur.
Thanks for the compliment; the way I look at it is that in the interests of speed, I don't worry about being 100% perfect with either the rules I add to my bot, or how thoroughly I check the edits they make. I try to be fairly careful, but I do make the occasional mistake that probably wouldn't happen with a slower, more measured approach. In order to make this an acceptable compromise, I think the very least I can do is to encourage criticism/feedback from other Wikipedians and respond to it as best I can. Your "correction" to the name of an image file broke the connection. I don't know whether this was a bot or a handmade "correction," but in either case it took a while to clean up. Thanks for your note. I often think that many of the customs of the Greeks could be regarded as educational and spiritual practices. The symposium would be an interesting one to explore as a vehicle for mental training. Its performance, especially in light of its inclusion of a psychoactive substance simultaneous with the execution of demanding mental and physical tasks, reminds me of ceremonies such as the peyote ritual of the Native American Church or the ayahuasca rituals of the UDV and other groups. Near versus nearly

In the "Charles Manson" article, you've changed "near-blind" to "nearly-blind" on the ground that an adjective is modified by an adverb. If you will check dictionary.com and bartleby.com, you will see that "near" is an adverb and that "near dead" and "near-standing" are given as examples of use of it. Please see the "automated advice" that the Peer review has given me on what it expects from this article. There are no surprises as I have seen this several times in the past. (Please go to talk page of this article and at the top where I had requested for Peer review, click into "request").

Basically, The auto review wants me to remove weasel words like "many", "in all" etc, redundant words, use British spellings instead of American spellings. I will also have to create subarticles for some sections like "religion", "society" to make the article concise. plagiarism

  • You are mistaken as to what plagiarism is. A "true" original is irrelevant. You must have been a very honest student in your younger years - and you never passed off someone else's work as your own. According to you, if you cheat off your schoolmate and he's wrong, then you haven't cheated because there was "no true original." I remember quite the opposite experience as a student. There was a "dummy" in class who made some rediculas mistake, and several dummer students copied from him. The teacher recognized the cheating, which was plagiarism, because such a stupid mistake could not have occurred by chance.
  • I suggest you read up on Philip Graves who discovered the plagiarism. The Protocols of Zion constitute, among other things, a plagiarization of Maurice Joly's work of fiction - so "truth" is irrelevant. Have you never heard of the 1864 work, Dialogue in Hell ...? Hi. I have been busy planning the next FAC "Western Chalukya Architecture", an unique architectural idiom that flourised in Karnataka between the 11th and 12th centuries. With this effort in mind, I travelled to the districts of central Karnataka (Dharwad, Gadag etc.) this summer and visited a dozen of their fabulous monuments. I will finish writing this article and uploading some of the images which I am sure you will enjoy, sometime around Nov 10th. the current vogue for shying away from "men" in the sense of "persons" is a politically-motivated faux confusion foisted upon the English language by the feminists and their fellow-travellers; ha ha. Mann vs Man

When referring to the Isle of Man or Calf of Man, the word is spelled with only one "n". However, when the word Mann alone is used to describe the island then the word has two "n"s. This is a relic of the Gaelic origins of the name which is Mannin (Mann) or Ellan Vannin (Isle of Man). At least it didn't become the Isle of Van. Dabbler (talk) 15:32, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh! no. I am really happy with your copy edits. I just left a hurried message on your page as I was at work. I reinstated the Vishnu avatars para only because I though you may have deleted it by mistake or something. The reason I removed those other adjectives was more to ensure that the users who complained about those words dont return with more complaints, so we can move on to other articles. On this note, the current FAC Western Chalukya architecture which is low on adjectives, a reviewer has objected saying the sentences are too long, and at times confusing. As for your sly reference to a Thai phrase: in Thai, that would be Mai b'lai, never mind; in Isan, Baw bpen yahng dawk, nothing happened (worth comment); or more coarsely, chung mung tuh! Thank you for your edits of Thai_lunar_calendar#Holidays_regulated_by_the_moon. You make the text read so much more smoothly that the only way I can see what you've done is to go to the history! I have further changed the intro to this section by removing unnecessary "( )", converting some text to bold, and by changing the words "instances" and "businesses" to "shops". Unit dimensionality

Please do not add "square" to units, unless the units are actually two dimensional. For example, if the text is "12 x 12 feet", it is incorrect to change it to "12 x 12 square feet." It would be correct to say "144 square feet," but then information is lost, namely the dimensions of the subject. I've corrected the instances of this error on Campo_del_Cielo. Data/Datum, and subject - verb agreement

Hiya Writtenright, I just wanted to come here and start a discussion with you about data/datum and subject verb agreement. You're of course correct that data is primarily a plural noun, but it's also used as a singular mass noun in modern usage. By the way, I've been unhappy with that sentence ever since I wrote it, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to say it better. I obviously don't think that using "Data" in it's plural sense is a good way to go, and I probably should state that I don't think that changing it to use "datum" would help much either, but if you could rephrase that sentence somehow then that would be great.
