Meetup tomorrow

Hi, Jean. I know you said when we met yesterday that you are coming to 54th Street tomorrow afternoon but I do not see that you have signed up for it. Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Free Culture Friday You should. The people who set up the tables, order the food, etc like to know. Some will even want to know who might need or offer technical help. The rest of January

Pleasant as usual last night, at dinner and a show with you, Rose, and Bob. I was happy to clarify some of the murky politics involved in organizing collaborative editing among anarchists. Only Fred and your friend Gwen (?) didn't get there for dinner. And no; I wasn't really an old man snoozing during the play; merely resting my eyes, while savoring the dialog. Yes, that's it, resting eyes and listening. Anyway, I'll be more awake at a few Wiki-things in January:

  • This coming Saturday, Jan 11 is the monthly Philadelphia Wikisalon. Formerly these were held at the Philadelphia Science History library but now they are usually just Zoom calls. Wikipedia:Meetup/Philadelphia/WikiSalon 2025-01-11 This month's Zoom is nominally about working the International Phonetic Alphabet into articles, which is a fairly boring topic to me but I'll participate anyway because they're a good group for discussing whatever methods and trends may interest any of us. Sometimes it's only four of us; more often six or even eight.
  • Tuesday Jan 14 at 4PM we will meet at Brooklyn Heights branch library to discuss pictures and whatever other topic we like, followed by dinner down the street. The room is set up for eight and we've got five or six already lined up.
  • Saturday Jan 25, starting at Noon at Brooklyn Central at Grand Army Plaza, we will celebrate Wikipedia Day. That's normally the biggest NYC Wiki party of the year, with close to a hundred participants in lectures and panels and lightning talks and little side meetings. This October we will host the annual Wikiconference North America, which is even bigger. As for Wikipedia Day, last time we had it I was busy greeting people at the front desk at Columbia U, fetching things that someone forgot (we had an official birthday cake but no cake knife), coaching raw newbies, being coached in Wikidata, and so forth. This year, when the Library has to kick us out and close its doors (5PM? 6?) a bunch of us will all go to dinner at some local restaurant.

Maybe we should add another smaller thing during the month. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:41, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
