Thank you for creating the LA and Inland Empire portals! I am spreading them around articles related to both subjects! It would be really helpful to have all LA-related articles have a link to the LA portal and all IE related articles have a link to the IE portal. I was looking at this edit you made to San Diego. The templates will show what counties are in, but not actually do any subcategorization of them. It's easier for these regional categories like So Cal, SFBA, to think of them in terms of what counties are included. I noticed all the cities were removed and the counties replaced them. I think it would be beneficial to have both counties and cities on that page since some southern california cities are in counties not part of SoCal i.e. Santa Barbara. Oh and i also noticed that some county categories were empty so that doesn't help either. It really can't do any harm having the cities pages in the category either. Like they said below it's best to not add redundant sub-categories. If there are missing county categories, it's better to create the county categories that are missing. Question about the Southern California Cities portal
Hi, SoCal! You have been very busy creating portals - thanks for doing all that! I have a question about some cities in San DIego County, that have been tagged with the "San DIego Portal". Someone objected to El Cajon being linked to that portal, and they removed it on the grounds that they are not the city of San DIego, and I think they are right. So I was looking for the appropriate portal to use for cities in San Diego County - something other than the San Diego portal. I was thinking to use either the Southern California portal or the Southern California Cities portal, but I see that Southern California Cities has not been put on any city pages. Did you have something else in mind for it, or is that the portal I should link to, for cities in San Diego County other than San Diego? Hello Melanie. Do you mean there was a link to the SD portal in the see also section of El Cajon? If so that wasn't my work at least i have no memory of doing so. Earlier someone suggested that the portals be linked to "related" pages. While that person has been doing that with the LA, SD, and IE portals i have not. I believe wikipedia works by providing correct information, not incorrect or unreferences material, with which i was removing. This has nothing to do with deletion but everything to do with making it correct. As for giving me time, you cannot revert my edits as that would be adding incorrect information. SoCal L.A. Pretty disappointed you didn't bothrt doing much checking. The article was being reverted by one editor without wp:consensus but claiming there was consensus. Consensus on wikipedia is a policy. When you merge content on Wikipedia, the source article is rarely actually deleted, due to licensing procedures. It is more likely that the history will be left intact and that it will be redirected to the county article and the content will be merged in there. Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved, as you did to Template:Inland Empire, without good reason. They need to have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. We have some guidelines in place to help with this. Generally, a page should only be moved to a new title if the current name doesn't follow these guidelines. Also, if a page move is being discussed, consensus needs to be reached before anybody moves the page. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. This list is not an MSA list. The note includes a portion of the MSA and a portion of the Riverside area as well. Linking to the MSA alone is misleading. It's okay, however we might consider moving this talk to the talk page. Polaron, by keeping it just Los Angeles it is congruent with New York and the other cities on that list. After all most of those should just be Greater "City Name", but they use the largest or most important city to represent the area. hopefully that makes sense. SoCal L.A. As does the footnote i gave. The Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana MSA covers Los Angeles and Orange counties. Oxnard-Ventura-Thousand Oaks MSA covers Ventura county and Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario MSA covers Riverside and San Bernardino counties. All five counties if i'm correct. SoCal L.A. I hope there was no offense taken to my declining to file the move request for San Diego-Tijuana. The discussion surrounding El Paso-Juarez became really nasty with one admin even threatening to block me. Essentially two of the admins felt that, regardless of whether what the other editor had previously done was ethical or not, they did not want to do anything about it unless there was consensus among a lot of editors. I objected to the attitude and it turned into a thing. Thankfully Doncram was willing to mediate a little and the situation was put back on a constructive path.
Anyway, do what you feel is best about San Diego-Tijuana. I just don't want to burn bridges any further at this point.
I want both of them too be "City X-City Y" metropolitan area. I am sorry that people reacted so, unnecessarily. Polaron does have a history i guess though. All i know is that Wikipedia shouldn't be taken so seriously it affects your life, your real one ;). Not really, i mean it is more culturally part of the Central Coast, as is most of Santa Barbara County. Also as far as stereotypical SoCal goes it's definitely not. The only part of Santa Barbara County that is considered part of SoCal is the city of Santa Barbara. However i consider them parts of the Central Coast. This disambiguation page has been around for two years, yet no main-space article links to it, still? I think we may be "disambiguating" something that was never ambiguous. No obvious reason why these two specific southern borders should be disambiguated; what about Sudan? Former Yugoslavia? Russia-Georgia? Surely all of these are just as notable. If this disambiguation page had any real purpose to serve, it would be serving it by now.

The Southern California Wikipedia community has two more events scheduled for the month of October: a water-related edit-a-thon at UC Riverside, and an Unforgetting L.A. event at the Los Angeles Archives Bazaar in conjunction with L.A. as Subject!
As part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries and to celebrate Open Access Week, UC Riverside is participating alongside other Western Waters Digital Library members in an edit-a-thon focusing on water issues. Join students and faculty learning how to edit! This event will take place on Tuesday, October 21 from 10am to 3pm at UCR's Orbach Science Library (map). RSVPs are requested here.
The Unforgetting L.A.edit-a-thon and training workshop will take place at the 9th annual Los Angeles Archives Bazaar, and is hosted by online magazine East of Borneo in partnership with L.A. as Subject. The LA Wikipedia community has three events in mid-February -- please consider attending!
First, we have a Valentine's Day edit-a-thon appropriately named Redondo Loves Wikipedia, which will take place at the Redondo Beach Public Library from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, February 14. Join library staff, the Redondo Beach Historical Society, and others to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of Redondo Beach!
Second, we have a Wik-Ed Women editing session on Tuesday, February 17 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists.
Third, we have an Unforgetting LA event put on by East of Borneo in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Come help improve Wikipedia's coverage of LA design and architecture, and have an awesome free day at the museum -- parking will be validated for edit-a-thon participants! If you'd like to use particular books from GRI's great collection, be sure to email before 2/13 (instructions at event page).

The LA Wikipedia community has two events in this second half of March -- please consider attending!
First, there is a memorial edit-a-thon in honor of the prolific LA Wikipedian Adrianne Wadewitz, which is being held downtown on March 18 (tomorrow!) from noon to 8pm as a part of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies' annual conference. Please drop by to contribute your own work or teach other users how to write for Wikipedia.
Second, there will be an event at the Redondo Beach Public Library (following up on last month's session), in collaboration with the Redondo Beach Historical Society. Please join us from 10am to noon on Saturday, March 28 at the main branch of the Redondo Beach Public Library!
The Wiknic is a part of the nationwide Great American Wiknic. We'll be grilling, getting to know each other better, and building the L.A. Wikipedia community! The event is tentatively planned for Pan-Pacific Park (map) and will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2014 from 9:30am to 4pm or so. Please RSVP and volunteer to bring food or drinks if possible!
5th Annual Wiknic rescheduled to Saturday, July 25, 2015, ~9:30am-4pm
Due to a conflict with the Redondo Loves Wikipedia edit-a-thon, the fifth annual Los Angeles Wiknic has been rescheduled. As before, the location will be at Pan-Pacific Park (map) and will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015 from 9:30am to 4pm or so. Please RSVP and volunteer to bring food or drinks if possible!
I would like to personally invite you to the March edition of the Wik-Ed Women meetup, which will take place on March 15, from 6-10 in the evening. It will occur at Los Angeles Contemporary Archive, 2245 E Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, California 90021 (downtown LA -- map). The building has a pink top with old signage for American Accessories, Inc. dba Princess Accessories (Photos [PDF]). There is on-site parking in the back, which also has an entrance. If you cannot attend in person, you are more than willing to work remotely, as we appreciate all help that you can provide. New Challenge for Oceania and Australia
Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest!
